Char Dham Yatra is a holy Hindu pilgrimage that combines spirituality and religion with traveling to the scenic parts of the remote Garhwal regions. It involves offering prayer to the 4 holy ancient temples of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The historical and mythological accounts of these legendary shrines surpass time and ages and its significance is acknowledged ever since the place had become accessible to devotees. There are numerous customs in Hindu traditions and customs but the concept of taking a pilgrimage is common to every religion. One such important pilgrimage or Yatra in Hinduism is the iconic Char Dham Yatra which can be dated back to the 7th or 8th century. The primary reason for devotees to go on this divine journey on the pious Garhwal hills of Devbhumi Uttarakhand is the belief that after its completion of the visit to the 4 holy ancient temples of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, the pilgrims are granted salvation or moksha which is the liberation or complete freedom from the karmic cycle of birth and rebirth.

Gangotri, on the other hand, marks the place of origin of Ganga River according to the mythological accounts, which is named Bhagirathi River here and king Bhagirathi is said to have worshipped Goddess Ganga.
Finally, Yamunotri as the name suggests marks the place of birth of Yamuna River.
