Sikkim is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural state of India which is filled with colorful magnificence all against the crowning, snowcapped jewel of the Himalayan ranges. The people here are famous for their diversity and a unique set of traditions and beliefs that is very different from the rest of the Indian plains and subcontinent.

However, just like anywhere on the hills, the people of Sikkim are defined and identified by the clothing they are wearing or the jewelry they are adorning. If you happen to spend your holiday in Sikkim you will come across a very heterogeneous population.

Here is everything you need to know about the traditional Sikkim dresses that will help you in identifying the true essence of what makes this small state interesting in its own quirky way:

Traditional Bhutia Tribe Clothing:

Known as Bakhu in the Nepalese dialect and Kho in the Bhutia language, this is the primary traditional costume worn by the Bhutia tribe of Sikkim who make for a major section of the Sikkimese population. Apart from the fact that this piece of clothing is sleeveless, Bakhu resembles somewhat a Tibetan Chuba which is worn by both men and women. This looks like a loose cloak like clothing that is tied and tightened around the neck and waist with the help of a belt which is made out of silk or cotton material.

Over the years this simple and traditional clothing attire of Sikkim has gone through a substantial change to cater to the needs of the changing generations and the age of modernization. People now pair it up with a pair of denim jeans to make it look more western. Some women also choose to pair the Bakhu with a traditional shawl or a blouse known as Majetro and Chaubandi Cholo.

Traditional Lepcha Community Clothing:

The main traditional outfit worn by the people of the Lepcha community is known as Thokro Dum. Resembling a arate player’s outfit this piece of traditional attire can be spotted due to its Payjama length that goes down till the calves. Mostly people traditionally choose to wear a cap known as Shamo and a Yenthatse which is a traditional Lepcha shirt. To complete the look a hand woven waist band called Dupra is pinned at one of the shoulders and then wrapped around the waist of the wearer. The short length of the Payjama indicates that the men are original inhabitants of marshy lands.

The Payjamas are also made up of long-lasting materials to cater to the needs of the hard-working people who spend long hours in the field toiling away. The intricately and finely woven hats are also worn since they hold immense historical and ethnic value which is buried very deep in the historical past of their land. Did you know that these hats are made out of canes, bamboos, and straws? And these are worn as an ode to the royal soldiers who worked hard during the era of Chogyal Dynasty.

Dumvum:

The women from Lepcha community adorn beautiful a Saree – like garment which is referred to as a Dumvum or a Dumyam in the traditional language. This outfit goes down till the ankle and offers a silky, smooth, and comfortable sense of comfort. It is a very significant piece of clothing among the people of this community and they wear it as a mark of honor and pride which according to them binds them together in one string. A loose-fitting blouse is also aired up with this ankle-length Saree which is generally contrasting and very bold in color. This blouse is commonly known as Tago. Just like the other traditional Sikkimese outfit to complete the look the people include a belt called Nyamrek and taro to cover the head and is a type of a traditional hat/cap.

Lepcha men and women showcase distinct differences in the way they wear their traditional attire where the calf-length payjama indicates them working on the marsh lands on the other hand flowy garments or bottom wear is an indication of working on dry fields and land.

Shuruval:

Sikkim is inhabited by people from neighboring and nearby regions as well, mainly consisting of people, especially from Nepal. But how can you spot them from the rest? The Nepalese men wear this particular outfit as an ode to their tradition. This attire consists of a garment which is double-breasted and long, flowy in nature making it comfortable and stylish to wear at the same time. The bottomwear consists of a churidar which is known locally as Shuruval itself and the shirt which they adorn as a Topwear is known as a Daura or a simple shirt.

Completing and pulling the whole look together as one is a waistcoat or an ascot and a belt known as Patuki. Some people also carry a Khukri in a leather case to represent their community and pay homage to their dynamic and fearless courageous past.

Traditional Wedding Attire:

No matter which part of India or the world you go, the traditional wedding attire are very colorful and beautiful to look at. When it comes to the eastern part of the Himalayas, the bride is adorned with the finest clothing made out of smooth silk material making them look like the royals of Baku community. Similar clothing made out of silk is created for the grooms. Both the bride and groom wear similar upper garments the only distinction being a loose trouser worn by men as a part of the bottom wear. As a part of showcasing grandeur, men and women wear leather boots. When it comes to jewelry they make sure to wear only the finest jewels made out of pure gold which further adds on to their royal look and feel.

Placed gracefully amidst the scenic towns of Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet, the least populated hamlet of Sikkim is on almost every traveler’s bucket list. Adorned with bountiful greenery, unmatched scenic beauty a rich selection of biodiversity, Humble Folks, and the ever-present vibe of peace, everything about this hamlet hill station is picture-perfect. All these factors together make for one of the most fun-filled, exciting and memorable holidays with your family, friends and loved ones.

When here you will definitely feel compelled to take back a souvenir or a locally made memorabilia which will regularly remind you of that place, so here is a complete list of shopping in Sikkim for souvenirs and memorabilia:

Prayer Flags

These yellow, red, green, blue and white-colored flags with Tibetan chant written on them with black holds a special place of significance in the life of the local Sikkimese or in general the Tibetan people. Everyone in India in fact knows the value of these prayer flags. One can see them tied on people’s bikes, entrance doorways, high up on the mountains and monasteries since they believe that the wind blowing through and fluttering these flags shower blessings, protective vibe, and goodwill among the people residing there. As difficult and expensive it is to get a hold of a good prayer flag in Mumbai or Delhi, it is found in abundance here and that too in different sizes. Remember to respect the sanctity of the flag and not tie it indoors as it is considered a bad omen. You won’t even have to look for them around as they are widely present in various markets, shops, roadside make shift marketplaces, etc. A prayer flag also makes for a very good gift to give someone back home.

Thangkas (Religious Scrolls)

If you have ever travelled to a Tibetan population dominated region like the northeastern part of India or the further northern region of the Himalayas like Ladakh, Leh and some other parts of Himachal and Uttarakhand, you will come across some interesting, colorful and traditionally made scrolls holding religious significance. These scrolls can be seen hung around in different parts of the monasteries, cafes, shops, and homes of the believers here. These souvenirs can be found anywhere in Sikkim without you having to look for it hard. What defines a good Thangka traditional painting is the richly colored and finely embroidered piece of work that s then fabricated before it is set up as a decorative item on the walls. Although a bit pricey in nature these Thangkas make for a really nice gift for someone special back home like your family, friends or loved ones.

Woollen Carpets

Sikkim is geographically located on a hill station where the temperature drops to zero degrees Celsius and below in extreme conditions. Whatever the case is Sikkim remains cool and pleasant throughout the year. There is an abundance of woolen clothing and warm items available here which will make you feel very warm and cozy even during the winter season back at home. These blankets makes for the perfect winter collection t your home and you will feel comfortable since these carpets are made out of heavy sheep wool item that preserves all the heat and is widely utilized by everyone in Sikkim from the cities to the villages. What’s better is that these woolen carpets are designed to fit most of your household items like Dewans, sofas, car seats and even beds which the locals use to keep their furnishings and yourself warm as well. In a general sense, a typical woolen carpet here would cost you anywhere around above Rs. 4,000/- so it would be only wise of you to buy it if you are traveling in your private car.

Sikkim Tea

All tea lovers rejoice! Sikkim is one state of India that is thoroughly dedicated towards providing everyone with the most delicious and full tasting pristine quality of tea for the masses. Due to the presence of the perfect and the correct weather conditions required to grow good quality of tea leaves, Sikkim tops the charts for supplying the best and the most premium quality of tea leaves not only in India but also abroad.
You may have heard of various different types of cheese from across the globe, but alpine cheese is something of a uniquely prepared cheese available largely in Gangtok – Sikkim. Every step of your shopping expedition in Sikkim will surely delight you and will also serve as a treat for food lovers and unique things buyers. This makes for one of the most unique and interesting souvenirs or gifts for your loved ones back home.
Adorning gracefully the northeastern end of the Indian subcontinent is the least populated and charming state of Sikkim. Filled with gently rolling hills, thriving green forests, colorful flowers, rich biodiversity, and humble local folk, everything about this state is magical and welcoming. All this put together makes Sikkim one of the most memorable and scenic hamlets for a getaway with family and friends.

Sikkim is one of those rare places that invite visitors all year long from different parts of India and the world. If you wish to explore this place in the most wholesome manner then you must know the golden rule of travel i.e. the best time to visit Sikkim. Here are all the details you require to know when is the perfect time to visit this beautiful hill state:

Sikkim in Summer

The months of April to June mark the summer months in Sikkim when tourism is at its highest and all the sightseeing places are comfortable and even pleasant to visit. These months are also the time when kids have their summer vacation making this the best time to visit Sikkim. The summertime comes to an end by the end of June and beginning of July when it is marked with the onset of the rainy season.

Unlike any other hill station in India, Sikkim even during summers remains extremely welcoming and cool. The days are mildly warm whereas the temperature during the night time also does not drop to extremely low levels. The days and nights in summer are very cool, comfortable, and pleasant. As compared to the other months this is the perfect time to go to Sikkim if you are planning on complete local sightseeing in and around Sikkim. One can visit the famous local tourist spots like the Rumtek Monastery, Tsomgo Lake, and even go on trekking and hiking trails without any worry. The valley of flowers is a must-visit during this time of the year in Sikkim and is sure a treat for photographers and nature lovers.

Sikkim in Monsoon

As mentioned above the end of June marks the beginning of monsoon season and lasts from July to September. The entire region gets covered in heavy rainfall during this time and everything seems to spring to life with color and makes you feel rejuvenated. However just like the other hill stations of India traveling to the hills during the monsoon season is not recommended due to the threat of landslides, slippery roads and sudden flooding situations.

The mountainous topography makes it very difficult to explore different places in Sikkim since the rainfall here averages in between little too heavy. If you manage to check out this wonderful state safely and without any problem then you will be able to get the best sights of gushing waterfalls and nature at its best. You may also visit some top-notch must-visit places during monsoon-like change lake, Kupup, Nathu La, etc. Sadly enough a lot of outdoor adventure sports activities like paragliding, trekking, and other such activities do not take place. The temperature around this time remains in between15 to 16 degrees Celsius and may also possibly drop to as low as 3 degrees Celsius. Meghalaya is the best place to visit during the monsoon season.

Sikkim in Winter

Winter sure comes as a treat for everyone who loves to travel in snow and cool climatic regions. Sikkim transforms into a winter wonderland during the winter season and lasts from the months of October to March. Several tourists actually prefer to explore the hill stations during the winter months. If you wish to see some snow and experience the fresh snow falling on your face and check out the incredible sights surrounding Sikkim then this is the perfect time for you. From the high altitude lakes to the snow-clad trees and trails every aspect here during winter is charming and whimsical in their own way.

However just like everything the negative aspect of this hill state during winter is that most parts here remains inaccessible due to heavy snowfall that blocks all the routes leading up to that place. Just like during the monsoon season you will not be able to indulge in several of the adventure sports activities and in peak winter time you will also be able to enjoy snowboarding and skiing activities in some regions here.

Best Time To Visit Sikkim

According to all the research and the above-mentioned details it is clear that the best time to visit Sikkim is during the summer months of March to June and maybe even early July. You can go on a trip with your friends, loved ones and family members. Sikkim has also become one of the hotspots for road and biking trips. It is also a very welcoming place for solo travelers and explorers from all across the globe. Exploration of this beautiful scenic hill station dotted with waterfalls, lakes, and gardens is something that makes Sikkim rank on almost everyone’s bucket list.

The northeastern state of Sikkim is the epitome of scenic views, incomparable lush greenery, and humble locals who make you feel right at home. The festivals here are enigmatic and the cuisines are delicious and wholesome which makes it a wonderful place to spend some quality time with your loved one or family and groups of friends.

However, being situated at a remote part of the subcontinent reaching here can be a confusing task if you are a solo traveler or a first time northeast India explorer. Here are some essential travel tips for Sikkim that you can keep in mind if you are planning to spend your holidays there happily and tension-free:

Check The Weather

This is the golden rule of traveling and the first thing that you must go ahead and check online even while you are just planning your holiday. In the case of Sikkim since it is a hill state located on the northeastern region of India and bordered by Nepal, West Bengal, and Bhutan, this place experiences typical hilly weather conditions. This is the reason why throughout the year this place remains cool, pleasant, and comfortable welcoming tourists every month! If Sikkim is on your summer vacation travel destination then be sure to pack some woolen clothing and in case of winter vacation then you have be well-packed with good quality winter clothes like sweaters, shawls, cardigans, and jackets. Be sure to follow this piece of advice not just in Sikkim but anywhere in the world you are planning to travel.

Carry Water Purification Tablets

Sikkim, as mentioned above, is a hill state so the accessibility to clean drinking water is limited and generally not up to the mark of what some travelers are used to. Although the water here may be okay for the locals to consume some travelers have experienced stomach upset situations after drinking the water here. However there are clean water bottles available here but if you keep on buying these bottles of water you are not just irreversibly polluting the environment but as also unknowingly pushing your travel budget, just to be extra careful carry these tablets and put it in the locally available tap water there. This will not only ensure that you get the best and impurities free drinking water while traveling.

Carry Cash

Traveling to Sikkim will require you to make plans just like you travel to Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand. The set of problems these hill states share are more or less similar in some ways. You can choose to carry cash in some concealed places and keep it carefully in your luggage and take them out according to your need and requirement. Although there is zero problems related to theft and robbery of any travelers or even the locals but it is better than losing our card which will cause you more harm. Another reason is the less availability of working / functional ATMs. Being a famous hill state destination the problem of enough ATMs here still persists and a lot of people staying there for a longer duration of time may even face challenges.

Plan A Doable Itinerary

North east India is home to some magnificent remote villages, incredible waterfalls, and scenic locations spread across this part of India. One would want to plan to see everything and go everywhere which is where most travelers go wrong. After checking the weather and deciding upon the dates the next step would be for you to plan an itinerary that suits the number of days you are there and the experiences that you cannot miss out in any case. Don’t just go there to flaunt to your peers, go there for the real, ethnic, and organic experiences. One of the best ways of planning your itinerary would be to plan your holiday during some fair or festival in Sikkim. Make sure to plan the holiday in such a way that would cover the popular places and also give you some time to relax and have some leisurely fun on your own. Do not exhaust yourself by planning too many things in one day.

Indulge In Cultural Experiences

Sikkim is one of the most unique destinations in northeast India offering not only scenic and charming views but also enables the travelers to explore more than what meets the eyes. From the delicious locally prepared food and delectable cuisines to the local folk musical and dance performances, theatrical acts, and of course the lifestyle. Every aspect of this incredible hill town is filled with surprises and adventure. The culture of Sikkim is also extremely different and varied from the rest of the Indian continent. These 3 events that are celebrated include – Buddha’s birth. His enlightenment event and his passing day or the day he attained Mahaparinirvana. As a ritual this festival is celebrated during the 4th full moon day as per the Buddhist calendar. One can experience this festival in Gangtok where a large scale celebration takes place.

The local communities and villagers who earn their living through agriculture also celebrate it with immense harmony because this is also the time when the farmers harvest their produce hence doubling the happiness and merriment. This festival is also marked with different performances of traditional folk dances, singing, performing various rituals, and enjoying the delicious local Sikkimese cuisines. Each year the date of Losoong is different and is decided as per the Tibetan calendar (lunar) but it generally falls in between the 18th and 10th day of the lunar month for 4 days when one can even experience fun performances at Rumtek Monastery and Tsuklakhang Palace.

This particular festival coincides with the end of the harvest season and results in providing some much-needed relaxation and relief from all their hard work and lengthy testing patience. Considered to be one of the most awaited festivals in this northeastern charming state of Sikkim, this festival also goes on to prove the fact that most of these celebrations are deeply rooted with the land among the local communities and tribes since it is a source of their livelihood and something that they have been doing since generations. This festival is especially special to all the Tibetan Buddhists residing here who perform various traditions as a way of paying ode to the higher power above. They pray for being blessed with a good harvest and a prosperous agricultural season ahead.

The best, most engaging, and adventurous part of this celebration is when a trekking expedition goes up to the hills of Namchi in southern Sikkim where all the primary ceremonies and sacred rituals take place from Ravangla. This is also considered to be the main highlight of this festival.

Bhumchu (February)

In the local language the word Bhumchu translates into a very sacred pot of hot water this may be referring to the fact that during the ritualistic ceremonies a pot of hot water is involved. Just like every other festivals celebrated in Sikkim, this is also celebrated with equal if not more excitement, vigor, pomp, and show. The main focus of Bhumchu remains the cultural and traditional ceremonies which take place during the entire duration of this local festival. The first day of this festival is marked with the monks of Tashiding Monastery opening up the vase holding the sacred water. People say that this method is utilized to predict and read the forecast pertaining to the oncoming days of the year. During the 2nd day of this festival this particular holy pot is then filled up with the water from the sacred river that flows close to the holy shrine.
The scenic and charming northeastern hamlet of Sikkim which also makes for one of the 8 sisters here boasts of bountiful natural beauty, expansive rolling green meadows dotted with colorful wildflowers and humble welcoming folks who are deeply rooted to their culture and traditions and of course a sense of adventure for a traveler in every corner. Although underrated this place deserves a much-needed recognition for a variety of reasons ranging from being a peace seeker’s paradise to being a haven for outdoor adventure seekers.

If you are planning a holiday to Sikkim with your bunch of friends, or are going solo or even with your family and loved ones, here is an informative and thorough guide showcasing how to reach Sikkim easily and in the most fair and convenient manner suiting your requirement and travel needs:

How to Reach Sikkim

By Air

Air travel should be chosen if you are able to afford it or if you have some urgent work to get done in Sikkim. However if it fits your travel budget then there is no better way of traveling than taking flights everywhere since it saves on a lot of your holiday time giving you more opportunities to explore a place. Located at a distance of 35 kms from the capital city of Gangtok is the Pakyong airport. However one major drawback here is the fact that this airport has only recently been inaugurated it is not very well connected to a lot of different cities in India. Do check before if there are flights catering to your city to Sikkim. Bagdogra airport is another airport which is situated at a distance of 124 kms from Gangtok in West Bengal which caters to a number of different flights and has better connectivity.

People who strictly want to travel in ease and luxury can choose to travel up to Bagdogra airport and avail a helicopter service (operated by Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation) connecting to Gangtok airport and it only takes 20 minutes of flight journey. Keep in mind that these airports cater to only domestic flights. People who cannot afford these exorbitant services can choose from numerous services ranging from Cabs, taxis and even buses to reach Gangtok from Bagdogra. Sikkim being one of the best places to visit in northeast India offers several travel options according to the requirement of the traveler.

By Train

Travelling anywhere by train is a much-preferred option for traveling, especially if you are traveling with a large group of people on a tight budget. The train connectivity is also much denser and caters to a larger crowd of people to and fro remote regions making a lot of places accessible to travel. If you wish to also see the natural beauty surrounding Sikkim then travel to Sikkim via a railway trip. Sadly there is no major or big scale railways station in Sikkim but, there is one option of taking a train to Gangtok railway station. There are some major work being undertaken by the government to develop a fully functioning large scale railway station in the city of Sikkim but it may take some time. Apart from the railway station in Gangtok you can also take trains to Jalpaiguri, Siliguri both of which are located in West Bengal. Generally people looking to check out some amazing places in Cherrapunji choose this option for travel.

Siliguri railway station is located at a distance of around 145 kms from the main town of Gangtok while Jalpaiguri is situated at a distance of 188 kms from this city. Siliguri and Jalpaiguri are 2 of the most well-connected railway stations to make Sikkim accessible. This is also the most preferred ways for a majority of the public to travel around especially Siliguri to Gangtok that takes 4 to5 hours to cover the journey where on the other hand it takes 5 to 6 hours to cover the distance from Jalpaiguri to Gangtok. Mahananda express and Kanchankanya Express are 2 of the most widely and well-connected railway lines leading up to Sikkim.

Remember to know where and which are the best places to visit in Sikkim so that you are able to book your tickets to the desired destination accordingly.

By Road

Sikkim being one of the most popular holiday destinations in northeast India is made hugely and widely accessible even to the remotest corners of the Indian sub-continent is through the National highway of 31A. This national highway is also extremely popular for its scenic drives, beautiful lush surroundings throughout the way. You can easily take your own choice of the vehicle like a bike or a car and reach Sikkim by following the route given on Google maps which are accurate. If you wish to and if you want to have a comfortable journey with your family and not get involved in driving then there are several cabs and taxi options in order to reach Sikkim by road.

These are some of the easiest and the most viable options for travelling to Sikkim which can easily be available as well. Exploring Sikkim by road especially has a whole different meaning and vibe to it whose memory will remain etched in your hearts forever. Sikkim can also serve as a gateway to the northeast region of India which remains less explored but is worth every second you spend here.

Sikkim is famous for being one of the most beautiful, scenic, and a state where people are friendly and very deeply connected to their roots and heritage. Every aspect here is unique and has an identity of its own. It is home to magnificent sights, panoramic views, gently rolling green hills, and a Pandora box of diverse flora and fauna. What makes this place even better is the variety of delicious authentic food available which makes this whole northeast India experience worth it.

Sikkimese food is famous for its locally available largely organic ingredients that preserves the real flavor of the dish. Travelers can get the real taste of Sikkim at any one of the largely available cafes, restaurants, and Dhabas. The state’s main inhabitants include Nepalese, Bhutanese and Tibetan people. One can taste the confluence of all these flavor together into creating one whole delicious Sikkimese meal.

Given below are a collection of some of the most widely available delicious authentic Sikkimese food that one must definitely try out:

List of 6 Most Popular Food in Sikkim

Dhindo

A trip to Sikkim remains incomplete without a delicious Dhindo meal which is considered to be a famous traditional food among the locals and tourists alike. Although the roots of this dish can be traced back to Nepal but it is loved amongst the people of Darjeeling and Sikkim. The delicacy is created by preparing a flour mix which is slowly added into the boiling water and combining it with butter. The flour’s primary ingredient is either barley or millet which makes it very healthy as well. A typical utensil used in traditional Sikkim homes is an iron pan known as Palame Tapke. This is one of the most widely prepared authentic meals in Sikkim due to its warming and comforting nature and is also often referred to as one of the best comfort foods here.

Phagshapa

Sikkim along with the rest of northeast India is a paradise for non-vegetarian food lovers. The range of non-veg traditional food options available here are so many that one could get tired just listing it down. Phagshapa is one of the most preferred and loved delicacy among the Sikkimese population. The primary ingredient here is the pork fat which is cooked until tender and then also included with radishes and red chilies. It represents the perfect combination of the spicy and flavourful dish. An interesting thing about this dish is that no oil is utilized in its preparation instead the pork is just combined with vegetables resulting in one of the most healthy food options here. One can easily say that this dish is the best food in Sikkim for one to relish.

Gundruk And Sinki

This dish whose origin can be traced back to Nepal (like most of the Sikkimese dishes) it is created out of the combination of radish leaves and cauliflower. A tomato sauce/gravy like element works in combining this whole dish together. Locally made and organically grown spices adds a wholesome taste to the dish which also helps in creating a delicious meal. The main ingredient of Gundruk and Sinki is the taproot which is fermented that adds on to its delicious sour taste. Adding on to the taste is the mustard leaves and oil. As mentioned above and like most of the Sikkimese traditional delicacies this dish is also extremely healthy and has proven to be a good source of essential minerals and vitamins among other health benefits.

Sel Roti

As the name suggests this dish is an accompaniment bread just like the regular maida or wheat flour roti which is prepared in households and everywhere else in the plains of North India. This roti is a majorly available food item just like the humble roti but it is fried and generally served along with the traditional and ethnically prepared aloo curry. Sael roti is prepared by combining the two main ingredients of water and rice to create a paste-like dough. It is then deep-fried in the form of large donuts by dipping and frying it into boiling hot oil. Due to its wide and easy availability Sikkimese people love to indulge in this dish which became popular due to the presence of Tibetan and Nepalese crowd.

Kinema Curry

This is a traditional vegetable curry made with several locally sourced vegetables which makes it an extremely healthy option of food for health-conscious people. However the taste of this curry is unlike any other Indian curry you may have tried in the past. This uniquely different taste owes to the fact that the soya bean utilized here is fermented prior to its usage in the making of this Sikkimese delicacy. Other than that the other flavorful and aromatic spices utilized include Turmeric Powder, Onion, Red Chilli Powder, Tomato, etc. which are fried together in order to get the perfectly enhanced flavour packed healthy dish. One can have it mostly with hot roti or piping hot steamed rice.

Thukpa

You may have heard about a traditional Thukpa in the hill regions like the cities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It is known for its delicious and warming abilities which acts as a comfort meal especially during the cold winter season. The origin of Thukpa can be traced back to the local villages and the people of Tibet. It can be recognized in simpler terms as a Flavour packed wholesome noodle soup which also includes several vegetables that creates a delicious rhythm of flavours in every bite. Thukpa is undoubtedly one of the most popular street foods in Sikkim and is packed with the goodness of local and organic ingredients. One can Savour both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions of Thukpa according to their liking. People say that of you haven’t tried a traditional and locally prepared Thukpa dish in Sikkim then your travel to northeast remains incomplete.

All these dishes should definitely Tried since it will give you the perfect and the real taste of Sikkim.

The smallest Indian state of Sikkim is also one of the most fascinating places to visit in India for several reasons. From its food, lifestyle, and occupation to the people, architecture, and religion, everything about this place emotes peace, serenity, and a feeling of immense gratitude. The inhabitants of Sikkim are generally referred to as the ‘Sikkimese’ people but the region is also inhabited and shared in harmony with 3 different tribes namely Lepchas, Bhutias, and the Nepalese. Every community’s or tribe’s belief here has been very well preserved over the centuries and exists peacefully.

With changing times and persistent modernism Sikkim has attracted a lot of different peoples as well especially from the neighboring regions. These include Biharis, Punjabis, and Bengalis, etc. It has now turned into a colorful and vibrant melting pot of various cultures of India in one place. With all the modernization in the world the core belief system of Sikkim remains alive through their folk songs, dances, theatrical performances, and more. Every step of the way one will be experiencing some interesting thing or the other in this Pandora box of a place and you shall be leaving with a lifetime worth of memories. Anywhere you go here you shall be greeted with fun-filled adventures.

However, here are a few things that you should know about Sikkim:

Culture of Sikkim

The cultural heritage of Sikkim is extremely rich and consists of a blend of various different traditions, customs, and religions of all the inhabitants. The people of Sikkim are generally characterized to be warm, welcoming, helpful, and very hospitable by nature. The people here speak various languages along with Hindi and English which bodes well for their reputation as a welcoming host for travelers from different parts of the world. People here celebrate even the smallest festivals and fairs with great excitement, enthusiasm, and vigor. If you happen to travel to Sikkim during one of their festivals then do not miss out on the social gatherings that showcase the wonderful culture here. The earliest inhabitants here who are referred to as Lepchas practice Buddhism and Christianity but other than this the religions practised here cannot be listed out since there are so many. The settlements you will observe are very small, cozy, and tiny on the inside and they can be seen standing on stilts that raises the hut around 5 feet above the ground. They truly believe in the saying ‘simple living and high thinking’.

Customs And Traditions Of Sikkim

As mentioned above the entire hill state of this beautiful land is host to innumerable tribes, communities, and groups who have preserved their culture, customs, and traditions since long. They have managed to create a peaceful and loving environment since they are very cooperative, respectful, and cooperative with each other. Some common customs shared here are the facts that during some ceremonial occasion or a religious festival the temples monks make sure to cover their faces with large animated and vibrantly colored masks (as you may have seen in pictures), sparkling sword and chunky large jewelry while dancing in rhythmic motions to the sound of drums and trumpet sound of the horns. One of the primary religions followed by the people of Sikkim follows the Mahayana sect of Buddhism and celebrates the Saga Dawa in a grand manner. Monks going around the city of Gangtok reciting various holy teachings and scriptures is a common phenomenon here. People also consider mount Khangchendzonga as a guard to the hill state of the entire Sikkim and in this honor the festival of Phang Lhabsol is celebrated. As a part of another ritual and tradition on every 28th and 29th day of the month the traditional folk Kagyat dance performance takes place, and these days are decided as per the Tibetan calendar. Some commonly celebrated festivals here that are experienced in unison include Yuma Sam Manghim, Namsoong, Losoong, Tendong Lho Rum Fat, and many more. As a part of the tradition married Bhutiya tribal women wear a piece of cloth around their waist signifying their marital status.

Food of Sikkim

Sikkimese food consists of a diverse range of Flavours just like being a multi-ethnic combination of people and beliefs. This diversity is showcased through the delicious collection of food presented here. Once in Sikkim, one can find a plethora of food selection here including Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese and Tibetan which mainly consists of food items like noodles, Sinki Soup, Gundruk, Tomato Pickle, Fermented Soybean, Bamboo Shoot Dish, fermented rice products and so many more that the list would go on and on. Rice is a staple food grown and found in large numbers locally. If you’re wondering then one must know that the food here is fermented to increase its shelf and storage life owing to the cold winter months when food availability is scarce.

When it comes to non-vegetarian food items people here love to indulge in eating fish, pork and beef which is also very widely available in local Dhabas, restaurants, and markets. Items like Momos and dumplings are also extremely famous in this region and can be found literally anywhere and in any vegetarian or non-vegetarian combinations. Drinking in Sikkim is a very informal way of life and has no stigma attached to it as compared to the plains. People prefer drinking locally prepared rice beer, rum to keep them warm in higher reaches and whiskey.

Sikkim which is often described as a paradise on earth and the garden of Indra (according to the locals) makes for one of the eight (formerly seven) sisters of the northeastern flank of India which also includes Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. The scenic beauty of this state has earned it a spot from being one of the most beautiful and peaceful places to visit in India. Bordering with places like China, Nepal, Bhutan, and West Bengal it receives a massive influx of travelers who wish to experience the multi-ethnic culture and several other unique things this place has to offer.

The unmatched natural beauty of Sikkim is the result of the fact that the environment and the diversity of flora and fauna found here are protected and not plundered upon. Another reason could be the fact that 35% of the entire state makes for the thriving Khangchendzonga National Park area. However, how much do you know about the history and the past events that shaped the state in its current form.

It was in the 17th century that the kingdom of Sikkim was founded by the rulers of the Namgyal dynasty and was ruled over by Chogyal – the Buddhist priest-king. After becoming a princely state during the British rule, the people here finally got rid of the monarchy in 1975. A lot went down to achieve this upon which one needs to shed some light.

Here is a close look into the brief history of Sikkim to make you understand this place in an easier manner:

Early History of Sikkim

According to various sources and research the first inhabitants of Sikkim were called ‘Lepchas’. They share some common aspects and similarities regarding their culture, lifestyle, traditional attire, and beliefs with the Khasi people of Meghalaya and their language is also extremely close to the Tangkhul Naga who reside in the Northern part of Manipur. Apart from this, the spirituality of Sikkim owes to the fact that during the 8th century, when Buddhism was gaining momentum in the world, Guru Padmasambhava (also referred to as Guru Rinpoche) introduced Buddhism to the state. He also predicted that the era monarchy will commence a century later.

By 1200 AD – by this time Sikkim grabbed the attention of Guru Tashi who was then functioning as the prince of Kham district in the eastern Tibetan region. He had a vision that if he makes his way to the south or rather to Denzong – the land of rice to seek fortune. On reaching there they came in contact with the rulers of the Sakya Kingdom who were attempting to erect a pillar which was halted due to some financial problems. Guru Tashi helped out in the completion of this monastery and gained the title of the superior of 10 thousand or Khye Bumsa. The coalition was made formal when the Sakya king’s daughter was married off to Khye Bumsa who then settled in the Chumbi Valley.

Foundation of Monarchy

During this time the people belonging to the Nyingmapa sect were being seriously and heavily persecuted in Tibet which resulted in their fleeing from the country and taking refuge in the neighboring places of Bhutan and Sikkim. This took place somewhere around 1624 when Sikkim was being ruled by the 5th generation of Khye Bumsa namely – Phuntsog Namgyal. During this time the territory of Sikkim consisted of Chumbi Valley in the northern end and stretched up to the region of Dzong in Bhutan and Arun River in Nepal and a major flank of the Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. Later on in 1670, Phuntsog Namgyal was succeeded by his son who then took the step of changing the capital to Rabdentse from Yuksom.

It was then during the 1700s that the Bhutanese invaded Sikkim with the help of Chogyal’s half-sister who was denied the heir to the throne. Immediately a number of different territories of Sikkim was lost to the Bhutanese including Kalimpong. The year 1717 to 1733 the kingdom of Sikkim experienced many unexpected raids from the neighboring country of Nepal as well in the western region of Sikkim while the Bhutanese raided the eastern end. All this resulted in the complete annihilation of Rabdentse – the capital of Sikkim by the Nepalese invaders. Sikkim was then shown support by China who did so in order to defend the Tibetan region against the Gorkha kingdom of present-day Nepal. The troops of china proved to be victorious over the Gorkhas and the Chinese Qing dynasty was established in Sikkim.

Sikkim during British Raj

Sikkim became a princely state when India was ruled over by the British since they shared a common enemy which was Nepal. As a result of the invasions by Nepal, a massive chunk of Sikkim along with the plains of the Terai region resulted in the British being prompted to attack Nepal which later on resulted in the Gurkha war of 1814. Treaties were signed among the British East India Company and Sikkim as a result of which some but not all parts of occupied territories were returned to Sikkim. The British people were desperately looking to establish sure and strong trading bonds with Tibet. However, the relations between Sikkim and the British went bad since the region of Morangwas taxed. In 1905 the Prince of Wales paid a visit to the then Calcutta and went on to meet the Chogyal. The two of them kicked off a friendly relation and the crown prince of Sikkim was sent to complete his college studies at the prestigious Oxford University. Upon his return the now king Sidkeong Tulku assumed power and successfully widened the sovereignty of Sikkim and put forth some large scale reforms and changes during this short rule as the Chogyal that came to an end in 1914. Sikkim attained complete independence in 1918 and in the following decade the kingdom put forward the policy to end several social evils like child Labour, gambling, indentured service, etc.
