Puja Performance:

The special puja and rituals take place in the inner sanctum of the temple around the triangular granite lingam of lord Kedar. All the rituals are done as per the instructions of the head priest. The head priest has learned these rituals and various puja steps through the great sage and seer Adi Shankaracharya, who had laid down the rules way back. The committee of Kedarnath is responsible for organizing, booking, and performing these special pujas and rituals. These rituals are performed before the start of the general puja Darshan in the morning.

It is a great idea to get the general puja quoting and plan your trip budget accordingly.

Streaming down from the peaks of Kedarnath is the Mandakini River. She makes her way through the banks of Kedarnath Mandir and meets up with the Alaknanda River at their confluence point in Rudraprayag. This makes Rudraprayag an important place for pilgrim goers and devotees. People on their way to Kedarnath make it a point to stop at the confluence point of these rivers.
Omkareshwar Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Omkareshwar Temple is the winter home of Lord Kedar. Located in Ukhimath, at a reachable elevation, the temple serves as the winter abode of Kedarnath from November to April. When the temple of Kedarnath shuts down for 6 months from November, the region becomes too hostile for devotees to go there and offer prayer to Lord Kedar. As a solution, the priests move the idol of the presiding deity from Kedarnath to Omkareshwar so that the devotees continue to offer their prayers to the Lord. It is a great way of continuing your Kedarnath Yatra without letting the weather conditions halt your devotion.

Gaurikund

Gaurikund is a renowned Hindu pilgrimage site situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand on the way to Kedarnath.

At Gaurikund, a hot spring is also located, where you can take a holy dip.

Chandrashila Peak

Speaking of Chopta and Tungnath Mahadev Temple, a visit to Chandrashila peak is inevitable. The Chandrashila peak is located about 1 km ahead of the Tungnath Mahadev Temple. Many people choose to go the extra mile and check out incredible views of the Chaukhamba range of mountains on all sides. The peak is believed to also be the spot where Raavan, one of the greatest Shiva devotees, is believed to have performed intense meditation to please the Lord. The peak is also a great place to witness the scenic sunsets and take surreally beautiful pictures.

Phata

Phata is a quaint village situated in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district.

On the Kedarnath yatra, it is a popular stopover as it houses the helipad from where you undertake the Kedarnath helicopter yatra.

Some pilgrims stop by this place to take a break during their journey as it is an ideal destination for an overnight stay and to get refreshments.

Bhairavnath Temple

The list of Kedarnath tourist attractions won’t be complete without Bhairavnath Temple, which is dedicated to God Bhairav.

As per the legend, during the winter months when Kedarnath Temple closes due to heavy snowfall, Bhairavnath Temple’s main deity protects the whole Kedarnath valley and main temple area.

From the temple, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the entire Kedarnath Valley and the Kedarnath Temple.

Vasuki Tal Lake

Annual Pilgrimage Cycle of Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath Temple opens for six months only. Due to the intense snow and cold weather conditions during winter, pilgrims are only able to access the temple for about half a year annually.

Opening and Closing — it generally opens late in April or early in May and closes in October or November.

Announcement Process — the date of opening is selected on the auspicious festival of Maha Shivratri, and the closing date is selected at around Bhai Dooj, two days after Diwali.

Kedarnath Temple Winter Seat — during winters, the main idol is temporarily moved to Omkareshwar Temple at Ukhimath, to ensure the safety of pilgrims and preserve an ancient tradition.

Ceremonies Performed for Opening and Closing of Kedarnath Temple

Kapat Opening Ceremony of Kedarnath Dham

The temple activities are guided by traditional ceremonies. A small musical procession transports the idol of Lord Shiva (Utsav Doli) to Kedarnath for a few days before the Opening Day.

Upon arrival, the temple, largely covered with flowers, is cleansed. Then the chief priest (Rawal) returns the idol to the inner sanctum (Garbha Griha). Then the doors open at a special time (Muhurat) for thousands of pilgrims waiting inside.

Kapat Closing Ceremony of Kedarnath Dham

A final ceremony is known as Kapat-band, which occurs on Bhai-Dooj. When the final Aarti (lamp worship) is finished, the idol (Vigraha) is transported to the Ukhimath winter temple. Then the priests take a lamp (Akhand Jyot), which burns continuously for six months in the locked temple.

The Akhand Jyot symbolises the unbroken divine presence at Kedarnath even during the six months when the temple remains closed under winter snow. This is how the pilgrimage season concludes until the next Akshaya Tritiya.

Best Months for Visiting Kedarnath Dham

The peak pilgrimage season for Kedarnath Dham runs from May to June and September to early November. Wear comfortable trekking shoes with sturdy soles. For sun protection, carry essential medications, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats.

Char Dham Yatra Registration 2026 — Mandatory

Documents needed: Name, age, address, Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID number.

Q-1: What are the Kedarnath Temple darshan timings in 2026?
Ans: Kedarnath Temple opens at 4:00 AM for the Mahabhishek puja and remains open until 8:30 PM. General darshan is available from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The temple closes from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM for afternoon rituals — plan your arrival accordingly.

Q-2: What time does Kedarnath Temple open in the morning?
Ans: The temple gates open at 4:00 AM for the sacred Mahabhishek (ceremonial bathing of the Shivalinga). If you are staying overnight at Kedarnath, attending this early morning Abhishek is a deeply spiritual experience. General darshan for regular pilgrims begins at 7:00 AM.

Q-3: What is the closing time of Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Kedarnath Temple closes at 8:30 PM after the Shayan Aarti. There is also a midday closure from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM for afternoon rituals. Importantly, before 3:00 PM you can touch the Shivalinga directly; after 5:00 PM, only visual darshan from a distance is possible.

Q-4: What are the aarti timings at Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Morning Mahabhishek: 4:00 AM – 7:00 AM. Rudrabhishek/General darshan: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Afternoon break: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Evening darshan: 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Shayan Aarti (closing ceremony): approximately 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM. The Shayan Aarti, where the deity is ceremonially dressed and put to rest, is a must-attend.

Q-5: On which days is Kedarnath Temple closed?
Ans: Kedarnath Temple has no weekly holidays — it is open every day throughout the yatra season. The temple is closed only during winter (November to April) due to heavy snowfall that makes the entire region inaccessible.

Q-6: When does Kedarnath Temple open and close in 2026?
Ans: In 2026, Kedarnath Temple opened on 22 April 2026 at 8:00 AM — this was officially announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) on Maha Shivratri. The tentative closing date is 6 November 2026 on Bhai Dooj. After closure, the idol is shifted to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath for winter worship.

Q-7: Is Kedarnath Temple open on Sundays?
Ans: Yes, Kedarnath Temple is open on Sundays throughout the yatra season. In fact, weekends tend to be slightly busier than weekdays. If crowd avoidance is a priority, mid-week visits are better.

Q-8: What is the Kedarnath Temple darshan time table for 2026?
Ans: 4:00 AM: Mahabhishek begins. 7:00 AM: General darshan opens. 3:00 PM: Temple closes for midday rituals. 5:00 PM: Evening darshan resumes (visual darshan only). 7:30–8:30 PM: Shayan Aarti and temple closes for the night. Staying overnight at Kedarnath lets you attend both morning and evening ceremonies.

Q-9: How many months is Kedarnath Temple open each year?
Ans: Kedarnath Temple is open for approximately 6 months every year — typically from late April (Akshaya Tritiya) to early November (Bhai Dooj). For the rest of the year, heavy snowfall completely covers the temple and surrounding region, making access impossible.

Q-10: When is Kedarnath Temple closed in 2026?
Ans: The Kedarnath Temple kapat (doors) are tentatively set to close on 6 November 2026 on the occasion of Bhai Dooj. The final closing date is officially announced on Vijayadashami (Dussehra). After closure, the Utsav Doli (ceremonial idol) travels from Kedarnath to Ukhimath in a grand procession.

Q-11: Is there a VIP darshan or special darshan at Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Kedarnath does not have a traditional VIP queue system. However, booking a Rudrabhishek or Mahabhishek puja (available 4:00 AM – 7:00 AM) is the closest equivalent — you get direct, close access to the Shivalinga with a dedicated priest before general crowds arrive. Book online via badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in.

Q-12: How do I book a puja at Kedarnath Temple online?
Ans: Visit the official BKTC website: badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in. Services available for online booking include Rudrabhishek, Sahastra Archana, and Sampoorna Abhishek. Online booking is strongly recommended for May–June as counters at the temple fill up quickly. You will need your Char Dham Yatra registration number to complete the puja booking.

Q-13: What is the ticket price and puja cost at Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: General darshan at Kedarnath is completely free — no entry fee. Puja rates set by BKTC: Kapoor Aarti ₹151, Sahastra Archana ₹1,100, Rudrabhishek ₹3,100, Sampoorna Abhishek ₹5,100. Always book through the official BKTC website to avoid fake panda agents who overcharge tourists.

Q-14: How do I book Kedarnath Yatra darshan online?
Ans: Step 1: Register for Char Dham Yatra at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — this is mandatory. Step 2: For puja booking, go to badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in. Step 3: For helicopter booking, use heliyatra.irctc.co.in. The Yatra registration slip must be carried at all times — it will be checked at Sonprayag, Gaurikund, and at the temple.

Q-15: How much time does it take for darshan at Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: During off-peak periods (early morning or September–October), darshan takes 30–60 minutes including queue time. During peak May–June season, waiting time can extend to 3–5 hours. Arriving before 7:30 AM on any day is the single most effective way to reduce waiting time significantly.

Q-16: What is the darshan process at Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Pilgrims join the queue at the main gate, proceed through the Sabha Mandap, and enter the Garbhagriha for a close-up darshan of the naturally formed conical Shivalinga. Before 3:00 PM, you may touch the lingam directly and apply ghee. After 5:00 PM, the lingam is adorned as a King (Bhog Murti) and darshan is from a short distance. The entire experience, though brief, is deeply powerful.

Q-17: What is the best time to visit Kedarnath to avoid crowds?
Ans: Two best options: (1) Arrive at the temple before 7:30 AM any day — even in peak season, queues are manageable at this hour. (2) Visit in September or early October — fewer pilgrims, clear mountain views, pleasant weather, and a more meditative atmosphere overall. Mid-week days (Tuesday–Thursday) are also less crowded than weekends.

Q-18: What is the best time to visit Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: May–June and September–October are the two ideal windows. May–June offers freshly opened temples, full puja services, and a festive energy. September–October gives you clear skies, stunning post-monsoon greenery, close Himalayan views, and far fewer queues. Avoid July–August — monsoon brings heavy rain and frequent road blockages on NH 7 (formerly NH 58).

Q-19: Which month is best for Kedarnath darshan?
Ans: September is widely considered the best month for most travellers — stable weather, open roads, beautiful valley colours, and significantly lower rush. For those who prefer the full ceremonial experience and don’t mind crowds, early May (around the kapat opening) is unmatched in spiritual atmosphere.

Q-20: Is there a dress code for Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: There is no strictly enforced dress code, but modest, clean attire is expected. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, and tight or revealing clothing out of respect for the sanctity of the site. Traditional Indian attire (dhoti-kurta, saree, salwar kameez) is ideal. Given the 3,583-metre altitude, warm layers are essential regardless of season — temperatures can drop to near-zero even in June.

Q-21: What should I wear to Kedarnath — dress code for men and women?
Ans: Men: dhoti-kurta, pyjama-kurta, or full trousers with shirt. Jeans are accepted. Women: saree, salwar kameez, or any full-coverage traditional attire. Both: carry a warm jacket and waterproof outer layer at all times. Trekking shoes with good grip are essential for the 16 km trek from Gaurikund. Avoid leather items inside the temple.

Q-22: Are mobile phones and cameras allowed in Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Photography inside the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum) is strictly prohibited. Your phone should be kept stored away inside the main shrine. You are welcome to photograph the outer temple, the valley, and the trek — the scenery is spectacular. Valuables including phones can be deposited at the cloak room before entering.

Q-23: How do I reach Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: The roadhead is Sonprayag/Gaurikund (accessible from Rishikesh ~215 km, Haridwar ~247 km). From Gaurikund, you have two options: Trek 16 km uphill (6–8 hours), or take a helicopter from Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi (7–10 minutes). Ponies and palkis (palanquins) are available on the trek route. Gaurikund can be reached by car, shared taxi, or state bus from Rishikesh.

Q-24: How do I book a Kedarnath helicopter ticket in 2026?
Ans: Book exclusively through the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal: heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Helicopters operate from Phata (₹4,840 one-way), Sirsi (₹3,043 one-way), and Guptkashi (₹6,077 one-way) as per 2026 UCADA-fixed fares (exclusive of GST). Char Dham Yatra registration is mandatory before booking. Slots fill within hours of release — set reminders for early booking.

Q-25: What is the nearest airport and railway station to Kedarnath?
Ans: Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (~250 km from Gaurikund). Nearest railway station: Rishikesh (~215 km from Gaurikund). From both, shared taxis and GMOU state buses run to Sonprayag/Gaurikund. The Rishikesh–Gaurikund route passes through Devprayag, Srinagar (Garhwal), and Rudraprayag — a scenic 7–8 hour drive.

Q-26: Is Yatra registration mandatory for Kedarnath?
Ans: Yes, biometric Char Dham Yatra registration is mandatory for all Kedarnath pilgrims. Register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or at physical counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Sonprayag, and Gaurikund. Your registration number is also required for helicopter booking and puja reservation. Carry the registration printout throughout the journey.

Q-27: What are the rules and etiquette for visiting Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Remove footwear before the temple entrance. No leather items (bags, belts, wallets) inside the sanctum. No photography in Garbhagriha. Queue discipline is strictly maintained — do not attempt to push or bypass the line. Loud talking or phone use inside is disrespectful. Carry your own water — plastiv bottles are discouraged inside the temple premises to maintain cleanliness.

Q-28: What places should I visit near Kedarnath Temple?
Ans: Vasuki Tal — a pristine high-altitude lake, 6 km beyond the temple (2–3 hour trek). Chorabari Tal (Gandhi Sarovar) — 3 km from temple. Shankaracharya Samadhi — directly behind the temple. Bhairavnath Temple — on a ridge above the main temple. For Panch Kedar pilgrims: Tungnath (Chandrashila, 3 km trek) and Rudranath are within 1–2 days of Kedarnath.

Q-29: How difficult is the Kedarnath trek and what support is available?
Ans: The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is 16 km one way with a steep elevation gain of ~1,450 metres. It typically takes 6–8 hours uphill and 4–5 hours to descend. Ponies (ghoda) and palkis (palanquins) are available throughout the route. Helicopter is the best option for senior citizens or those with health conditions. Ropeway services are being developed but are not fully operational as of 2026.

Q-30: What is the weather at Kedarnath and what should I carry?
Ans: Kedarnath is at 3,583 metres — expect cold temperatures even in peak summer. May–June: 5°C–15°C daytime, near 0°C at night. September–October: 2°C–12°C. Must carry: thermal inner layers, a heavy fleece or down jacket, waterproof outer layer, trekking shoes with ankle support, personal medication, glucose/energy bars, and a rain poncho. Altitude sickness is possible — acclimatise at Gaurikund or Sitapur before trekking.

Sitting majestically amidst the serene and peaceful surroundings of the Garhwal Himalayas is the ancient Shiva Temple, Kedarnath. Located right next to the holy river Mandakini, Kedarnath temple is a major part of the holy Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Reaching the temple is a real challenge. It is a mentally and physically draining task. The 18 km of the uphill trek will be a testing moment for even expert trekkers.

This pilgrimage center is visited by pilgrim goers and Shiva worshippers from all over the world. The key to completing this journey is to keep a few travels tricks up your sleeve.

Check out these travel tips for Kedarnath to make your journey memorable and comfortable.

Choose the Best Time to Visit Kedarnath

The best time to visit Kedarnath is from early April to early July. This is the summer season in the hills of Uttarakhand. During this time the pilgrimage is at its peak and pilgrims visit Kedarnath from all over the world. The days are bright, cloudless, and clear while the nights are still very cold. Keeping in mind the unexpected weather conditions of the hills, summer seems like the safest and the best time to offer your prayer to the lord. It is best to book your Kedarnath tour package beforehand for the said months. Avoid going to Kedarnath or any other hill station during the pouring monsoon months. This is for your own and your loved one’s safety.

Stay Warm like This

No matter when you decide to go to Kedarnath, remember to pack as if you are going to a very cold place. There are plenty of ways from which you could stay warm in Kedarnath. Pack good quality thermals, woollen socks, muffler, ear muffs, and gloves. It is important for you to stay warm during the trip otherwise you may fall sick and be unable to complete the holy pilgrimage. One of the best ways of staying warm is by covering your fingertips, toes, and head. Instead of wearing 2-3 heavy jackets and sweaters, wear one fleece base layer and then top it up with a sweater and a jacket. There are also heat packs available online. Heat packs are tiny bags of heat that activate when you keep them inside your gloves, shoe, or inner pockets.

Transportation Choice

The best way to reach Kedarnath is by helicopter trip. However, it may be expensive for many. The next best way to reach Kedarnath is by road. The trip starts off from Rishikesh, the gateway to the Garhwal. It goes through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, and Gaurikund. Gaurikund is the last motorable road leading up to Kedarnath from here the uphill trekking trail to Kedarnath begins. There are numerous other options to reach Kedarnath. You can take your private vehicle or rent a car or hire a taxi service as well. All this can be done easily through a travel agency or by yourself in Rishikesh.

Alternative to Trekking Uphill

Many fitness enthusiasts or extreme devotees decide to cover the 18kms of the uphill trek to the temple on foot. However, some people are unable to do so for a variety of reasons. There are pony and Doli services available for people who are unable to cover the trip on foot. Many people opt for these alternative options as it actually is a very difficult and challenging high-altitude trek.

It has increasingly become a trend to book a helicopter tour package for Kedarnath. The helicopter trip starts from the Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun. The chopper will drop off the pilgrim at one of the many helipads near Kedarnath temple. From the Sersi, Sitapur, Phata, etc. helipad the passenger pilgrims will be transferred to another helicopter that will transfer them to the Kedarnath Helipad. This helipad is just 500 meters away from the main temple shrine. This not only cuts down on travel time but is also a very comfortable option for people who are physically challenged. It is also a comfortable and luxurious option for people traveling with their families.

Carry A First Aid Kit

A first aid kit has to be one of the most crucial things to carry during a trip to Kedarnath. This first aid box must include items like a Dettol Bottle, Band-Aids, Pain Killer, Paracetamol, Calpol / Dolo, Crepe Bandage, Cotton, anti-motion sickness medication, and other medicines that are prescribed to you on a daily basis.

Another important thing to carry for the journey is water purifying tablets. The water purity condition in Kedarnath is not up to mark. It is advisable to use these water cleaning tablets every time you get water.

Book Accommodation In Advance

You don’t want to be slowed down during the yatra. The best way of doing this is by booking your accommodation way beforehand. There are hotels for all ranges available. To offer more convenience for the pilgrims, there are guest houses also available by the GMVN. Making these bookings beforehand will not waste your time during the trip. During the peak travel season, these prices for the hotel shoot up and its availability also falls. To ensure budget-friendly accommodation it is important to make these bookings before the peak travel season kickstarts.

Prepare Yourself Beforehand

A trip to Kedarnath is physically challenging for some and excruciating for others. It is best to stay in your best shape if you are planning on booking a Kedarnath yatra package. It would be ideal for you to start with some light workout routines at least a month prior to the beginning of the journey. You can go for regular walks, eat right and practice yoga exercises. Even a 20 minute to half an hour of workout routine can make a world of difference.

Even if you are traveling by helicopter pilgrims still need to be in the right physical condition. This is because Kedarnath is located at a very remote high altitude location. This is a challenge to the physical condition of the pilgrims.

Additional Essentials to Carry

Other than the essentials mentioned in the list above, there are other additional important things to carry. These include a portable charger, an extra set of batteries for battery-operated items, a good pair of walking shoes, heat packs, a torch, and a valid SIM card like BSNL or JIO that only functions in these parts, etc.

These are some easy and doable travel tips for Kedarnath. These tips have been accumulated over time by expert travelers and people who have been there. It is better to be prepared and safe than being sorry.

Kedarnath is one of the most important places of Shiva worship in the world. Located in Rudraprayag district by the holy Mandakini River, the temple’s history is awe-inspiring. Over the years, the popularity of Kedarnath has grown. Due to its lush and scenic surroundings, the temple is not just visited by devotees and pilgrims but also by nature enthusiasts.

When it comes to the culture of Kedarnath, it is certain that the people here are deeply religious and very grounded in their heritage. The culture makes a place more soulful. If you are headed to Kedarnath, then learning about its culture would make your experience more wholesome.

History of Rudraprayag

The name of district Rudraprayag is derived from Lord Shiva’s other name, which is Rudra. During ancient times, Rudraprayag was a part of Kedar Khand, after which the temple is named. It was in 1997 that Rudraprayag was declared a district. It was carved out from the 3 adjoining areas of Chamoli, Tehri, and Pauri Garhwal.

From Chamoli, the whole of Augustmuni and Ukhimath block, and a part of Pokhari and Karnaprayag block merged into Rudraprayag district. The Khirsu block from the Pauri Garhwal district was also added to the newly formed district.

Fairs and Festivals in Kedarnath

The fairs and festivals of Kedarnath are very well preserved. The folklore, Traditional Garhwali songs, and dance culture here are very unique. Here are some interesting fairs and festivals of Kedarnath:

Hariyali Devi Mela – This festival is held each year during the Navratri season in the months of September to October. Hariyali Devi is also worshipped as Bala Devi and Vaishno Devi. The fair takes place at the temple of Hariyali Devi, located en route to Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag.

Madmaheshwar Mela – The mela here is organized in the Ukhimath block headquarters. After the shutdown of Madhyamaheshwar Temple for the winter season, the idol of the goddess is transferred to her winter home in Omkareshwar Temple. Several cultural shows take place marking the transfer of the idols.

Pandava Dance – Also known as Pandav Lila, the name of the festival literally means play of the Pandavas. This ritual is all about re-enacting stories from the Hindu epic Mahabharata through singing, dancing, and recitation.

Ram Navami – This holy day is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, marking the auspicious birthday of Lord Ram. It takes place on the 9th day of the Chaitra month. The holy event is marked with bhajan singing and traditional folk song performances.

Nag Panchami – Kedarnath is a region where the primary deity of worship is Lord Shiva. This day is dedicated to celebrating and thanking the nagas, or the serpent gods. This day is celebrated on the 5th day of Sravana. The nagas are offered milk, and snake figures are made.

Religion and language in Kedarnath

It is understood that, having been through an extremely dynamic history, Kedarnath is home to a variety of religions and languages. Its location in a remote part of the Garhwal Himalayas has played a major role in cultural preservation. In the same manner, its location close to the Indo-Tibetan and Indo-China border has played a vital role in the mingling of different cultures and traditions. This makes the religion and language in Kedarnath, Rudraprayag, truly one of a kind.

When it comes to religion, Hindus make up the majority in the region. Around 99% of the entire population in the Rudraprayag district constitutes a Hindu population. Out of the Hindu population, 94% make up the Garhwali Hindu population. The remaining population is made up of Muslims and other religions. There are protected tribes living deep in the forests of Rudraprayag and are known by their tribe names. They live within the national park regions and are protected by the government of India.

Since a majority of the district is occupied by Hindus, Garhwali is spoken widely. Kedarnath is also a very famous pilgrimage spot, so the locals now understand Hindi easily. The predominant first language in Kedarnath is Garhwali. It is spoken by over 94% of the entire population. Other than that, the population here also speaks Nepali among other languages.

History and legends of Kedarnath Temple

The history of Kedarnath goes back to the 8th century. The temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya. The intent behind it was to re-ignite a feeling of Hinduism and oneness among the Hindus. He is said to have found the lingam right on the banks of the holy Mandakini River. This can be seen in the main sanctum of the temple since it is unlike any other regular Shivling and is triangular. Ever since its establishment, Kedarnath has become one of the top pilgrimage centers in the world.

According to legends, even before Adi Shankara, it was the Pandavas brothers who were credited with the establishment of Kedarnath. After the war, and having killed their cousins, they headed to the Himalayas looking for forgiveness from Lord Shiva. Kedarnath is also a part of the Panch Kedar Yatra, which was established by the Pandava brothers themselves. The Pandavas had spent some time here and even set the foundation for the temple. They performed all sorts of pujas and meditation activities to please the Lord.

Cultural activities in Kedarnath

Attend The Opening/Closing Ceremony of Kedarnath – Going to Kedarnath anytime is a blessing. Attending the opening or the closing ceremony is a different story. The entire valley resounds with traditional dance and musical performances. The Doli carrying the lord is transferred from one place to another amidst great zeal and enthusiasm.

Meditate At The Kedarnath Gufa – Located 1 km just above the temple of Kedarnath is the meditation Gufa. The cave is a one-bedroom setup with one bed and an intercom. The cave offers sweeping views of the Kedarnath Temple and the entire Kedar Valley. It was made popular when the honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi stayed in the cave for a night.

Offer Prayer At The Bhairav Holy Spot – Just a 1 km uphill trek behind the temple will take you to the Bhairav Devta shrine. The lord is said to protect the temple from extreme conditions during the harsh, cold winter season. It is also said to protect the temple from evil when it remains shut down for 6 months.

Visit The Winter Abode Of Lord Kedar – When the temple shuts down for 6 months, the idol of the presiding deity is shifted to his winter home in Ukhimath. For the remaining months, people can continue to offer their prayers to Lord Kedar at his winter home in Ukhimath.

The culture of Kedarnath is truly unique. It binds together the age-old traditions and beliefs into one string of spirituality.

Kedarnath is considered one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism — and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple has centuries of legends, mythology, and historical significance woven into its story. Throughout a long and eventful history — surviving glacier encasement, floods, and the passage of time — the shrine has endured as a nerve centre of India’s religious and cultural identity.

Its origins are tied to the Pandavas. However, based on historical evidence, the temple was reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. This guide provides an in-depth look at the history of Kedarnath.

Legends and Origin Story

The Pandava Story

After the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas were consumed by grief and guilt over killing their own cousins, the Kauravas. Draupadi accompanied them as they set out northward into the Himalayas seeking Lord Shiva’s absolution. Meanwhile, Shiva — reluctant to grant them pardon easily — took the form of a bull in Guptkashi to avoid them.

Bhima spotted the unusual bull and chased it. As the bull began sinking into the earth, Bhima seized its hump to prevent it from vanishing completely. The bull’s body disappeared, but the hump remained at that very spot. This is why the Shivalinga at Kedarnath takes the form of a hump — a naturally formed conical rock, not artificially shaped.

Pleased by the Pandavas’ perseverance, Lord Shiva absolved them of their sins. It is said they then built the original shrine at Kedarnath.

The Panch Kedar: The bull’s other body parts are believed to have appeared at four other locations. Together with Kedarnath, these form the Panch Kedar — five sacred Shiva shrines in Uttarakhand:

The Nar-Narayan Legend

A second important legend involves the twin sages Nar and Narayan, who performed intense tapasya (meditation) at Kedarnath.
The 2013 Kedarnath Flood

On June 16–17, 2013, an unprecedented cloudburst above the Chorabari glacier triggered a catastrophic flash flood and landslide that swept through the Kedarnath valley. Thousands of pilgrims and residents lost their lives in one of India’s worst natural disasters in recent times.

Remarkably, the ancient Kedarnath temple itself survived largely intact — a fact widely noted by scientists and believers alike. Researchers later identified that a large boulder above the temple had diverted the main surge of debris water around the structure. For many devotees, this was seen as divine protection.

Reconstruction of the valley and temple precinct began in March 2014, with nearly ₹700 crore allocated for medium and long-term restoration. A 25-minute laser light show — now operational at the site — depicts the Mahabharata story and the events of 2013.

Kedarnath in Ancient Texts and Scriptures

The reference to Kedarnath can be found in the Skanda Purana, which is believed to be one of the 18 Mahapuranas. In this text, Kedarnath has been described as a site where the River Ganges was released by Lord Shiva from his matted locks.

Another text that mentions Kedarnath is the Kashi Kedara Mahatmya. In this ancient text, Kedarnath is considered to be the crop of liberation.

Kedarnath Temple is also considered to be one of the two hundred and seventy-five Paadal Petra Sthalams in Tevaram, the Shaiva Tamil devotional text. These texts signify the religious prominence of Kedarnath.

Kedarnath Jyotirlinga History FAQs

Q-1: What is unique about the history of Kedarnath?

Ans: Kedarnath’s history is uniquely layered: its mythological origins are tied to the Pandavas, its architectural revival to Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE, and its modern narrative shaped by the 2013 catastrophic flood — which the 1,200-year-old temple survived intact. It is also the site of Adi Shankaracharya’s Mahasamadhi and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Q-2: How old is the Kedarnath shrine?

Ans: The current temple structure is believed to be over 1,200 years old, having been reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. The site’s sanctity is described in texts that predate even that reconstruction.

Q-3: Who revived the Kedarnath Temple?

Ans: Adi Shankaracharya — the 8th-century CE theologian and philosopher — is credited with reviving and reconstructing the Kedarnath shrine, establishing it as a major tirtha (pilgrimage site).

Q-4: Is there a Vedic reference to Kedarnath?

Ans: Yes. Kedarnath is mentioned in major Hindu scriptures including the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Kashi Kedara Mahatmya, all of which highlight its significance as the holiest Shiva shrine.

Q-5: Is Kedarnath a Jyotirlinga?

Ans: Yes. Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva — the most sacred Shiva shrines in India.

Considered to be one of the ancient and the holiest abodes of Lord Shiva, the temple of Kedarnath is not only a vital pillar for the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand, but it is also a crucial part of the Panch Kedar Yatra in Uttarakhand. There are several legends related to the creation of this temple. One of the most popular is how it was visited by the Pandava brothers and established this temple in an attempt to ask for forgiveness from Lord Shiva for committing the crime of killing their kin. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have resurrected this temple, whose Samadhi is situated towards the back of the main temple and is not one of the most prominent holy destinations in India.

Location

The temple is perched on a whopping elevation of 3,583 metres above sea level and at a distance of 223 km from the holy town of Rishikesh within the district of Rudraprayag. The entire valley of Kedarnath is lined by the holy river of Mandakini and is dotted with expansive, lush green pastures and meadows. The temple offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding majestic peaks of Kedarnath, Kedar dome, along with other snowbound ranges.

Inside Kedarnath Temple The Shrine

Inside the temple sits an irregularly shaped lingam, which is placed on a pedestal and goes as high as 12 feet with a circumference of 12 feet. There is a small pillared hall right upon the entrance, which has pictures and images of the five Pandavas and lord Shiva’s consort, Parvati. Not only are there images, but the interior of the temple also consists of statues of Lord Krishna, Pandava brothers, Nandi (the vehicle of Lord Shiva), and even Draupadi, amongst other prominent gods of Hinduism. Taking pictures of the lingam inside the Garbhagriha is strictly prohibited and not allowed.

Best Time to Visit

Kedarnath temple remains open only for a select few months in a year. The temple Kapat opens up for Darshan during the holy and auspicious eve of Akshay Tritiya and shuts down during the holy day of Bhai Dooj. The temple remains open for pilgrims for a duration of just 6 months, and during this time, the best time to visit is between the summer months of May to June, since the weather is extremely pleasant and comfortable for travelling, and from the winter months of September to October. The temple remains shut down for the remainder of the months where the temperature goes as low as zero or even sub-zero levels.

Opening and Closing Dates

The opening and closing dates for Kedarnath Dham were decided on the holy eve of Basant Panchami on 2nd February 2025, by the temple committee of Char Dham. The temple Kapat will open for Darshan on the eve of Akshay Tritiya on May 2, 2025, and is scheduled to shut down on 23 October 2025 on the holy eve of Bhai Dooj.
