Kapat Opening Ceremony of Yamunotri

The Kapat opening ceremony of Yamunotri Dham is the most awaited ritual for Hindu devotees. It is considered very lucky if any devotee gets a chance to witness the Kapat opening ceremony of Yamunotri Temple. The Kapat opens during Mangala Aarti for the devotees in the early hours. The priests chant mantras and install the Yamunotri Idol. The Aarti takes place with Vedic chants and rituals to honor the goddess, Yamuna. Devotees take a holy dip at Janki Kund, located near the temple, and receive Prasad (sacred offering); the event also marks the starting of the pilgrimage season.

Kapat Closing Ceremony of Yamunotri

The Kapat closing ceremony of the sacred Yamunotri Temple is also known as the Kapat Band ceremony. It occurs on the festival of Bhai Dooj, which falls a day or two after Diwali, the festival of lights. This ritual also marks the end of the pilgrimage season. Priests chant Vedic mantras and do the final Aarti worship to honor Goddess Yamuna before closing the doors for the next six months in the winter due to heavy snowfall.

Winter Seat of Yamunotri Dham

The winter home of goddess Yamunotri is Kharsali, located in the Uttarkashi district at a small Shani Dev Temple. Due to heavy snowfall and harsh temperature, the idol of Yamuna is shifted to Kharsali to maintain the continuity of worship even in winters. Pilgrims visit Kharsali at the Shani Dev Temple to receive the divine blessings of Goddess Yamuna.

Yamunotri Temple is located near the foot of Kalind Parbat, perched atop a flank of Bandarpoonch Parbat in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand in the western Garhwal Himalayas. Being the commencing point for the holy Chota Char Dham Yatra, it is frequented by numerous devotees in the summertime, looking to offer prayers at the revered shrine dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna, the divine representation of the holy river. Here is a list of tourist attractions to visit around Yamunotri, apart from the actual temple itself.

Janki Chatti

Janki Chatti is the main town center near the Yamunotri temple, from where the 3-4 hour trek to the temple starts. It is the primary place for pilgrims to stay while visiting the temple since it is the last motorable place and therefore it is a hub for hotels and restaurants and other facilities that tourists and pilgrims need for the journey. Janki Chatti also has a number of hot springs where it is considered auspicious for pilgrims to take a dip

Hanuman Chatti

Hanuman Chatti was earlier the starting point of the trek to Yamunotri Dham since there was no road up to Janki Chatti. Some tourists and pilgrims still start their trek from Hanuman Chatti since it is a picturesque trek even though longer in terms of distance. The Hanuman Temple in Hanuman Chatti is also a major tourist attraction. It is also a popular spot for trekking to Darwa Top and Dodi Tal.

Surya Kund

Located near the Yamunotri temple itself, Surya Kund is named after the Sun God; father of Goddess Yamuna is a thermal hot water spring that is considered holy in Hindu mythology. The hot water of the spring is used to cook rice and potatoes which are served as Parsad to devotees visiting the Temple.

Divya Shila

The Divya Shilla or the Divine Stone near the Surya Kund also holds enormous importance as it is considered that a mere touch of the sacred rock can lead a soul to liberation and it is customary to worship the Divya Shila before offering prayers at the Yamunotri Dham.

Saptrishi Kund

Saptrishi Kund said to be the original source of the Yamuna River is a high-altitude lake located at a height of around 4400 meters. The Lake or Kund is fed by the Champasar glacier and is considered very holy due to the belief that the Saptarishis or the seven sages performed penance there. Owing to the adverse weather and steep elevation, the 16 km trek is not an easy one. Moreover, there are no paved paths or camping sites, thus it is only recommended for experienced and skilled mountaineers. However, despite the immense natural beauty of the surrounding mountainside and the religious significance attached to the Kund, a lot of people still make the journey to the real source of the Holy Yamuna River.

Kharsali

Kharsali or Khushimath, located near Janki Chatti is the winter home of the idol of Goddess Yamuna. The oldest Shani Dev Temple in India is located here, and the idol is kept in this very temple for six months in winter. Apart from the religious significance of the village, it is also relished for its quaint views of the snow-capped mountains surrounding the village. The adjoining landscape also provides for a host of camping opportunities, both for avid campers as well as those looking for luxury camping opportunities.

Barkot

Barkot is the last major town en route to Yamunotri Dham, well known for its numerous trekking trails amidst the serene mountain landscapes. Barkot is also a hotspot for white water rafting, as both Ganga and Yamuna rivers pass through the town.

Dayara Bugyal

Dayara Bugyal is a beautiful meadow perched at an elevation of 3048 meters offering unparalleled views of the snow-clad Himalayan mountain range. A one-of-a-kind spot for camping, the Bugyal is reached via Barsu Village which is considered a sort of a base camp for the trek. Barnala Tal a beautiful Himalayan lake around 4 km from Barsu village and Bakaria Top, the highest point in the nearby region are some of the most famous attractions of the trek. In winters the Bugyal is completely clad in snow and is also a major destination for avid skiers.

Dodi Tal

Dodital Trek is one of the most stunning treks near the Yamunotri Dham. Dodital, the source of River ‘Asi Ganga’, is an emerald lake nuzzled amidst high mountains at an altitude of 3310 meters. With its tranquil setting and placid surroundings, Dodi Tal is perhaps one of the most gorgeous high-altitude lakes in North India. The lake is one of the few to contain Himalayan trout, known as Dodi in the local language and it derives its name from the same. According to legend, this is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, and a beautiful temple dedicated to him is located on one corner of the lake. Darwa Top or Darwa Pass, a one-day hike from Dodital is another well-known spot frequented by visitors to experience the breathtaking views of numerous Himalayan peaks.

Gidara Bugyal

Situated around 20 kms beyond the Dayara Bugyal at an altitude of around 300 meters, Gidara Bugyal is relatively unexplored. Slightly more complicated than the Dayara Bugyal trek, this trek is suitable for trekkers with some amount of experience and skill. The trek encompasses a vast expanse of lush green meadow blooming with mottled and extravagant wildflowers and offers magnificent views of the Bandarpoonch Peak and the Gangotri range.

The Yamunotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Yami; the divine representation of the sacred river Yamuna, can easily be placed among one of the most revered shrines in the Hindu system of belief. Counted as one of the pilgrimage sites in the holy Chota Char Dham Yatra, as well as the commencing point for the same, the temple is immersed in the spirit of divinity and spirituality. Owing to its immense religious significance as well as its abundant natural beauty, the Yamunotri temple is thronged by devotees looking to pray at the holy site during the summer, as the temple opens its gates on the day of Akshaya Tritiya in May and closes on Yama Dwitiya in October/November. During winters, the idol of the Goddess is carried to the nearby village of Kharsali for pilgrims to pay their homage.

Location

Situated in a narrow gorge on the banks of the river Yamuna very close to its source, amidst the breathtaking natural splendor of the western Garhwal Himalayas, the temple falls in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, some 130 kilometers from the main district headquarters at an altitude of around 3300 meters. The temple is perched atop a flank of Bandarpoonch Parbat, near the foot of Kalind Parvat where the actual source of the river, the Champasar Glacier is located at an altitude of 4421 meters. However, the glacier is largely inaccessible due to extreme weather and highly technical trekking route therefore no temple or shrine exists there, and devotees pay their respects at the Yamunotri temple itself.

Getting There

The nearest place to Yamunotri which is accessible by a vehicle is Janki Chatti, around 6-8 hours from the nearest Railway Station (Dehradun) as well as the Airport (Jolly Grant). In absence of any motorable roads, pilgrims have to trek uphill for about 6 kilometers from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri to reach the temple. The climb takes around 3-4 hours and is undertaken as a sign of devotion to the Goddess Yamuna; however, palanquin services as well as pony rides are also available for those unfit to undertake the strenuous climb but still looking to complete the pilgrimage. For those looking for something more challenging, there are also two breathtakingly beautiful trekking routes that commence from Hanuman Chatti, one along the right bank of the river via the Markandeya Tirth and the other through the village of Kharsali on the left bank of the river. These are longer and take around 6-7 hours each, but those who undertake them are rewarded by unrivaled views of the surrounding mountainside. Another unique and exciting way of experiencing Yamunotri, while indulging in luxury and adventure, is availing of Helicopter services. These services are available from Dehradun and take devotees directly to Kharsali, where connecting services like Palanquins or Ponies to reach Yamunotri are provided.

Religious Significance

The river Yamuna is one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism, and her confluence with Ganga and the mythical Saraswati at Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj is an extremely revered pilgrimage. It is considered that drinking the waters of Yamuna absolves one of their sins and bathing in its waters protects against untimely and unpleasant death. The Yamunotri Devi temple is surrounded by many hot water springs and the two most significant of these are the Surya Kund and Gauri Kund. While Gauri Kund has tepid water appropriate for bathing, Surya Kund has boiling hot water where Rice and potatoes are boiled to be served as Prasad for the pilgrimage. The Divya Shila or the Divine Stone near the Surya Kund also holds immense significance as it is considered that a mere touch of the sacred rock can lead a soul to liberation and it is customary to worship the Divya Shila before offering prayers to Goddess Yamuna.

Legends

Goddess Yamuna is the twin sister of Lord Yama, The God of Death, and the Daughter of Surya (Sun) and is considered as one of the eight consorts of Lord Krishna, or Astabharya. There are various legends associated with the Goddess Yamuna, also referred to sometimes as Yami or Kalindi (Daughter of Kalind, which is another name for Surya or Sun) in the Puranic literature. The Padma Purana mentions a story of two brothers who lead a sinful life but the younger brother is granted Swarga (Heaven) by virtue of bathing in the Yamuna for two months while the elder brother is sentenced to Narka (Hell), which highlights the importance attached to River Yamuna in ancient Indian texts. In a different legend, Yamunotri is described as the hermitage of Asit Muni, a venerated sage who was known to bath daily in both Ganga and Yamuna, but as old age approached could not continue his daily travels to reach Ganga. It is said that due to the piety of the great sage, Ganga herself started to flow in Yamunotri in the form of a stream so that the Muni could continue his practice without any difficulties. The significance of Yamuna is also emphasized in the Ramayana as it is said that after burning Lanka, Lord Hanuman doused his blazing tail in the cold water of Yamuna near its source, hence the name of the peak Bandarpoonch (Tail of the monkey).

Current Temple

The Yamunotri Temple, as it stands today made using granite stones on the left bank of the river, was constructed by Maharani Guleria Devi of Jaipur in the 19th century, but it is unanimously believed that The king of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah had created the temple in 1839 but it was largely destroyed due to an earthquake. Topped with a golden tower with red borders, the temple consists of a Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanatorium) and a Mandap (Gathering Hall), and a small patio that joins the main entrance. The Garbhagriha contains an idol of Goddess Yamuna made with black marble along with one of Goddess Ganga in white stone, as per the legend of Asit Muni.

Travel tip: Book accommodation in Janki Chatti well in advance — this is the last village before the trek to Yamunotri and gets very busy in May–June.

Monsoon Season (July to August) — Caution Required

July and August bring heavy and sustained rainfall to the Gangotri-Yamunotri belt. Travel becomes genuinely difficult and at times unsafe.

Pros of visiting in monsoon: Fewer pilgrims, lush green valleys, lower accommodation rates.

Cons of visiting in monsoon: Real risk of road blockages and landslides; the 6 km trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri temple becomes slippery and potentially dangerous. Check road conditions daily before travelling.

Autumn Season (September to October) — Excellent Alternative

Post-monsoon Yamunotri is genuinely beautiful — clear mountain skies, freshly washed valleys in vivid green, and the Himalayan peaks visible in sharp relief. Crowds thin significantly after September.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which month is the best time to visit Yamunotri?

May, June, September, and October are the best months. Weather is stable, roads are open, and the temple is accessible. June offers the best overall conditions.

Is Yamunotri open all year round?

No. Yamunotri Temple is open from approximately May (Akshaya Tritiya) to October/November (Diwali). It remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall.

What is the temperature in Yamunotri during winter?

Winter temperatures at Yamunotri drop to -5°C or below, often reaching extreme lows. Snowfall is heavy and the roads become completely inaccessible.

Can I visit Yamunotri during the monsoon?

It is not advisable. During July–August, heavy rainfall causes frequent landslides and road blockages, and the trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri becomes slippery and potentially dangerous. If you must travel, check daily road condition updates.

Does Yamunotri receive snowfall?

Yes. Yamunotri receives heavy snowfall during November to March. The temple closes and all roads become inaccessible during this period.

What clothes should I carry for Yamunotri?

Even in peak summer (May–June), carry warm woolens — especially for evenings and early mornings. In autumn (September–October), thermal inner layers and a heavy jacket are essential. Always carry a rain jacket and trekking shoes regardless of season.

What is the best season for the Yamunotri Char Dham Yatra?

Summer (May–June) is ideal for the Char Dham Yatra as all pilgrimage services are fully operational. September–October is an excellent alternative for those who prefer fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.

As the name suggests, this ancient and sacred temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, and the temple here marks the emergence point of the holy river Yamuna from its source. Since the rest of the way heading to the glacier is extremely narrow and normal people won’t be able to reach it, the temple marks the starting point of this holy river. Surrounded by the lush moss-covered green rolling hills and cascading waterfalls, which create a dramatic effect in the whole area, Yamunotri Dham is known for being the point of commencement for the Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. The entire region is dotted with numerous naturally occurring thermal springs, and the main temple can be reached after covering a walking distance of 4 to 5 km from the last Motorhead.

Location

Perched on an elevation of 3,293 meters above sea level and located within the district of Uttarkashi, Yamunotri Dham is one of the most difficult treks to take. The temple is located at a distance of 13 km from Hanuman Chatti and a walking distance of 6 km from Janki Chatti. You will be able to experience the breathtaking beauty and purity of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges, covered with lush green shrubs, meadows, and forests. The place requires the pilgrims to be courageous and cover the difficult trekking distance from its last motorable road.

Temple Architecture

The temple is known for its extremely contrasting yellow roof, which has become a landmark image for Yamunotri Dham. The temple is constructed using a simple and humble Indian Nagar pattern of architectural style. The current temple structure was built by the popular Garhwal ruler, Tehri Naresh Sudarshan Shah, in 1839 AD. It is constructed utilizing the granite stones that were sourced from the nearby and surrounding mountain sides. The famous glistening yellow roof of Yamunotri is conical-shaped. The main entrance of the temple structure is joined with a small porch-sized structure, which only adds to the beauty of the temple as a whole.

Inside the Temple

The idol of the presiding deity is in the form of an irregular black, gleaming stone, and it remains adorned with garlands and flowers. The idol is placed inside the Garbha Griha or the core chamber. Another feature inside the temple is the presence of a Mandap, or commonly referred to as an assembly hall, where the pilgrims get together for prayer purposes and Darshan of the goddess.

Opening and Closing Dates

Opening Dates – The temple of Yamunotri opens up for Darshan to the pilgrims during the auspicious eve of Akshay Tritiya during April or May. This year, the temple Kapat is set to open up for Darshan on 30 April 2025.

Closing Dates – Yamunotri Dham shuts down for Darshan on the holy occasion of Bhai Dooj. This year, the closing dates have been confirmed to be on 23 October 2025.

Winter Abode

After the shutdown of Yamunotri Dham, the idol of the presiding deity of goddess Yamuna is transferred to her winter home in Kharsali, which is situated at a comfortable distance of merely 20 to 30 minutes. The goddess stays there for the entire time the temple is shut down, and pilgrims can visit this temple to offer their prayers to the goddess as a part of their winter Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. The idol is brought back to the main temple shrine on the opening dates of the temple during April, amongst great zeal, enthusiasm, and music of the local people.

Temple Timings Puja Rituals

The temple opens up early in the morning at 6:00 am and remains open for Darshan till 8:00 pm at night.

There are several Poojas performed inside the temple, like Mangal Aarti during the morning and for evening Aarti – Shayan Aarti. A puja kit is easily available close to the main temple, which you can buy and use to perform your puja rituals. The priests of the temple come from the nearby village of Kharsali, which is located close to Janki Chatti.

Best Time to Visit

Being situated at a whopping height, Yamunotri Dham experiences extreme weather conditions just like every other Char Dham site destination of Uttarakhand. Visiting Yamunotri Dham during its opening time in April is considered to be the best time to visit in case you want to experience its pure spirituality, devotion, and reverence for the goddess. The best time to visit is considered to be the months of April to June. Remember not to make any plans to visit the Dham during the monsoon months of July to September, since the entire region remains prone to unexpected landslides along with heavy and torrential rainfall.
