Shravasti, located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is an ancient city with deep historical and religious significance. It is renowned as one of the major pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, as it was one of the six principal cities during the time of Lord Buddha. Shravasti offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and teachings of the Buddha, making it a significant destination for spiritual seekers and history enthusiasts.

The main attraction in Shravasti is the Jetavana Monastery, which holds immense importance in Buddhist history. It was here that Lord Buddha spent 24 rainy seasons, delivering many of his discourses and teachings. The monastery complex covers a vast area and includes numerous ancient structures, such as the Anandabodhi Tree, believed to be a descendant of the original Bodhi Tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Exploring the Jetavana Monastery allows visitors to connect with the spiritual essence and teachings of Buddhism.

An important site in Shravasti is the Gandhakuti, or the Buddha’s Hut, where Lord Buddha is said to have resided during his visits to the city. The hut, though in ruins, still holds immense significance for Buddhists, who come to pay their respects and meditate in its serene surroundings.

The Shobhanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, is another prominent religious site in Shravasti. It is believed to be the place where Lord Mahavira attained Kevala Jnana, or supreme knowledge. The temple complex comprises several shrines and attracts devotees from the Jain community.

Shravasti is also known for its vibrant festivals, which provide a glimpse into local traditions and cultural practices. The Buddha Mahotsav, held annually, celebrates Lord Buddha’s teachings and attracts devotees and tourists from far and wide. The festival features cultural performances, religious processions, and discourses on Buddhism, creating a festive and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.

For nature enthusiasts, Shravasti offers opportunities to explore the nearby wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. The nearby Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including endangered species like the Gangetic dolphin and the gharial (a type of crocodile). Birdwatching and nature walks are popular activities in the sanctuary.
