Fairs and festivals are an important part of any Indian state. It is not just about grand celebrations and massive festivities, it’s also about bringing people together and remembering our ancestors. It is also the best way of paying honor and homage to our incredible ancestors who have always spoken about respecting our culture, traditions, and heritage. Other than the religious and spiritual values, fairs and festivals in India are all about having fun and creating an aura or an environment of acceptance, love, and respect for each other. Jammu and Kashmir is a culturally homogenous state which is home to numerous tribes and communities. This means that every now and then this heaven on earth springs to life with color and vigor.

Here are some of the most popular and important fairs and festivals of Jammu and Kashmir:

Saffron Festival

Saffron festival celebrates the supreme quality of this spice that is exported throughout the world. Saffron cultivation is an age-old tradition and custom in the valley of Kashmir which has been initiated by the locals residing here. This festival is an attempt by the local Kashmiri government to rekindle the tradition and amplify the value of Kashmiri saffron. You can experience folk and traditional dance and songs taking place along with saffron picking activities and shopping at traditional markets and trying out Kahwa.

Shikara Festival

If you go to Kashmir and not live in a houseboat or go for a refreshing Shikara Ride, then did you even have a complete and real Kashmiri experience? This tourist favorite festival was another successful attempt by the government of Kashmir to make sure that Kashmir remains enticing enough for the visitors and boost tourism, which is a major source of economy and revenue. It involves a snake boat race, dragon boat race, canoe polo match, and shopping at the floating shops. It’s all about fun times!

Galdan Namchot

Galdan Namchot is a festival that is mainly celebrated in the very selective few regions of the Himalayas like Ladakh, Tibet, and even Mongolia. It celebrates the birth, life and mourns the death of the great philosopher Buddhahood of Je Tsongkhapa whose constant hard work and activities kickstarted a brand new school of teaching known as the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. This day even marks the beginning of the New Year in these parts.

Jhiri Mela

Jhiri Mela is a fair which takes place in the village of Jhiri which is situated about 20 kms away from Jammu and Kashmir. This annual Mela takes place during the event of Kartik Purnima that according to the Hindu calendar falls during the final week of October and early November. The meal is sort of an ode to the great martyr Baba Jitto a humble farmer who had laid down his life about 500 years ago to protest the oppressive regulations that were being brought about by the landowners.

Purmandal Mela

Maha Shivratri has to be one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the entire Indian subcontinent. Being a melting pot of different traditions and religions which is bound by a common thread of religious beliefs, Maha Shivratri is known by different names and Purmandal Mela is one of them in Kashmir. It takes place during the months of February or March and is mainly held in a place called Purmandal village located near the town of Jammu. The celebrations pan out to the temples of Peer Koh, Ranbireshwar Temple, and Panjbakhtar Temple.

Bahu Mela

Bahu Mela is a very auspicious fair that takes place in Jammu and Kashmir which is celebrated during the holy eve of Ram Navami according to the Hindu calendar. The name of this fair is drawn from the place where it takes place called Bahu Fort. In fact, the meal also takes place twice a year with one of them taking place during the time of Navratras. There is a kali temple located within the fort premises which is the center stage of this fair. Devotees come in huge numbers to the temple and offer their prayers and take blessings of the goddess.

Tulip Festival

This festival seems like one of the most surreally stunning festivals you could be a part of. Just like its name the festival is all about flowers, tulips, and beauty. The focal point of the festival is a tulip garden in Srinagar. Each year during the months of March to May, tourists throng the tulip garden and witness the gorgeous tulips just blooming to life and glory. It is a sight to behold and which cannot be described in words. To make it even more pretty the garden is surrounded on all sides by different gardens and a lake.

Hemis Festival

Hemis festival is one of the most iconic festivals that takes place in Ladakh, near Jammu and Kashmir. It is a great idea to plan a trip to Ladakh if you are already in J and K to learn all about the culture, tradition, and belief systems of the locals residing in these regions. The festival is all about elaborate and magical masked traditional dance processes and unfurling of various traditional thangkas or Buddhist paintings which are considered to be extremely holy. The festival celebrates the birth of Guru Padmasambhava in one of the most famous monasteries of Ladakh called Hemis Gompa.

Baisakh

Held on the 13th day of April, Baisakh is one of the most important, massively recognized, and celebrated festivals in Jammu and Kashmir. Just like the rest of India, this festival is dedicated to mark the first day of the spring season or in other words, the passing of the winter months. People celebrate by sowing a fresh batch of new crops, take a dip in the holy river of Ganga or any other life-giving river they consider auspicious and the locals even indulge in fun activities like archery, wrestling, traditional dancing and so much more. This is a great time to visit Kashmir and create a lifetime of memories because every village and every town of JandK celebrate Baisakhi with great vigor and color.

Kashmir is not just about natural beauty, its history, beliefs, and heritage goes back to centuries ago making it a vital part of Indian history. The festivals and fairs are filled with utmost harmony, love, and affection. Try planning a trip to Kashmir during the time of some festival or the other and you will never feel like going back!

Kashmir is the place where pure scenic untouched natural beauty combines seamlessly with the rich cultural heritage. Kashmir valley has always attracted philosophers, thinkers, adventurers, and curiosity seekers from all over the world ever since it was discovered. The rolling green hills and snowcapped peaks are set amidst the incredible backdrop of thick green forests, fruit-bearing trees, and an incredible selection of flora and fauna which further adds beauty to this place.

Centuries ago, Hinduism was the religion that had flourished there. Followed by Buddhism and Islam, Kashmir valley became the melting pot of various beliefs, traditions, and cultures. Visiting Kashmir will make you feel closest to heaven and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Wondering how you can reach Kashmir in the best possible way? Here’s how!

By Air

If you are planning on taking the shorter and more convenient route, then a flight journey will be the best way for you to get to Kashmir. If you are willing to spend some extra bucks and reach Kashmir in complete luxury and within just a couple of hours, then air travel is just the thing for you. Srinagar airport is located at a distance of around 15 kms away from the main city. It is very well connected to different Indian states through domestic flights like go air, indigo, jet airways, and air India. You can easily get to Kashmir from places like Goa, Delhi, Jammu, Mumbai, Leh, etc. Once you reach Srinagar airport you can book a taxi service which will get you to your accommodation easily. The flight journey will definitely play to your benefit because air travel will save you a lot of time and energy which you can choose to spend in the best possible manner in Kashmir.

By Road

The best part about planning a trip to Kashmir is that you can travel easily any time of the year since it falls within the rain shadow area of the Himalayan mountain ranges. You can plan a road trip easily at any time. You have to just get your car and get going! There are very well-connected roads leading up to Kashmir from various different parts of India. State and private run buses are a common sight to see. You can choose to get to Kashmir and then get a bus leading up to your destination. If you are traveling on a limited budget, then road tripping on buses or hitchhiking would be the perfect option to get around. The roads are well maintained and intensely interconnected through roads leading to neighboring cities, towns, and villages. This has drastically improved the connectivity among the people of Kashmir and has also been a boon for travelers and visitors. National Highway 1-A connects Srinagar to Jammu, along with the excitingly iconic Jawahar Tunnel which further goes on to connect Srinagar to the Jammu valley.

By Train

If you want to take it easy and have some extra time in hand to sit back, travel, and relax your time away, then train travel is the best option for you. The tickets are very cheaply available and make for a great way to spend some extra time with your family and loved ones. However, the nearest railway station reaching to Kashmir is situated about 330 kms away from the main city of Kashmir and caters to a massive range of trains from different corners of India. Regular trains include New Delhi – Jammu Tawi Rajdhani Express, Jammu Tawi Express, and Jammu mail are a couple of common trains operating from Delhi. Just like in the case of the airport, it will be easy for you to get yourself a cab or a taxi service. The roads leading up to the main city of Kashmir are very well connected and in good shape enabling smooth transportation for not just travelers and tourists but also for locals as well.

Inter-State and Inter City Transportation

Let’s just get this right off the bat, the most common and dependable mode of transportation within Kashmir is primarily on taxi and cab services. When it comes to cab service for hire, Ola and Uber are still not available in Kashmir but will soon be once the administration approves of its running. For the convenience of the travelers and tourists, Innova and Tavera SUVs are available for hire that come with a driver at the price of rupees 2,000 or 2,200 rupees. These cabs and taxi services will take you to all the top places to see in Kashmir. One thing that you should remember is that the cab you book in Srinagar, will not be allowed to enter Pahalgam. You will need to look for a local cab in Pahalgam to continue with the sightseeing. This is an initiative taken up by the government to not only create employment opportunities for the locals in Pahalgam but also to preserve the natural beauty here.

Did you know that the earliest Kashmiri civilization dates back to 3,000 BCE? You can imagine the centuries of deep-rooted history, traditions, and way of life the people here follow. Their customs are portrayed through their art, architecture, beliefs, festivals, food, language, dance, and music. Ever since humans settled in the gorgeous valley of Kashmir, it has been a source of constant charm and happiness. The air is clean, hills are covered entirely in green trees and no matter which time of the year you go you will be treated with surreal natural beauty. The beauty here is so intense and jaw-droppingly gorgeous that even your camera may seem like a useless tool to capture its beauty.

You have to go there and experience it in real-time because no amount of words, poetry, painting, or stories could summarise the serenity this place offers. If you are there or are planning to go to Kashmir then remember to shop for some locally or handmade souvenir items. Not only do they help the small local businesses but it also truly captures the Kashmiri culture in its complete glory.

Here are some things that you just have to buy when in Kashmir

Pashmina Shawl

This has to be the most obvious one. No matter which part of India or the world you are coming from, you may already know that Kashmir is famous for its Pashmina shawls. Pashmina is unlike any other warm piece of winter clothing material because it very nicely warms you up and the material is not thick, in fact, it is super thin. Its smoothness, warmth, and softness is unlike any other winter material. You can also find pashmina blankets here. A must-buy for everyone visiting Kashmir.

Traditional Kashmiri Jewellery

The rich ethnic culture and traditions of Kashmir is best captured in its jewelry collection. Even if you don’t like jewelry, traditional neckpieces, rings, earrings, and bracelets on display in the marketplaces will definitely catch your interest. It is clear that Kashmiri women love dressing up and adorn themselves in stylish pieces of elaborate jewelry that are made by them. The high precision and fine designer work on these jewels along with the use of Semi-Precious stones adds a luxury high fashion aesthetic to them. It goes without saying that these Kashmiri ornaments should be a must-buy.

Paper Mache Products

Paper Mache Products in Kashmir are made with incredible care and finesse. The art of converting waste paper into beautiful pieces of decorative items is something that Kashmiri folks have managed to become an expert in. They look very quirky and will go perfectly anywhere in your home. The dried Mache product is then brightly painted in quirky colors and designs that makes it even more pretty and unique in its own being. Some of the most popular items made with Paper Mache are caster set, jewelry box, vase, and other interesting decorative items.

Dry Fruits

Your Kashmir visit remains incomplete if you don’t get your stock of dry fruits collection. Dry fruits make for a very major part of worldwide Kashmiri products. We all know about the positive impact of any sort of dry fruits on the mind, body, and soul-making it an important part of the local’s diet and something that every visitor makes sure to buy. They offer an extensive range of dry fruits like almonds, walnut, cashews, figs, and hazelnut. You may find dry fruits anywhere but the organic and rich flavor-packed quality of Kashmiri origin dry fruits cannot be replicated anywhere.

Kashmiri Tea

Noon chai or Kahwa which is also referred to as Kashmiri Tea by the rest of the world is one of the defining features of Kashmir. One thing is clear, tea offers a soul-warming effect during cold weather making it an important part of their life. If you wish to feel like you are in Kashmir even when you are not then you must get yourself a pack of Kashmiri tea which is widely available anywhere mainly because they are also widely grown in the thriving Himalayan soil. Noon chai is pink and made with milk, Kashmiri tea leaves, salt, pistachios, almonds, and a touch of cinnamon for some sweetness.

Kashmiri Spices

Kashmiri food has a fan base of its own. Unlike any other place in the world, where spices are mass-produced in massive factories which steals away its natural flavor, Kashmiri spices are handmade and locally produced which helps retain its natural flavor while cooking. Once you have food using Kashmiri-produced spices you will not go back. The aromas, flavor, and that extra punch of tanginess enhances the flavor profile of any dish. Kashmiri Mirch or Red Chilli Powder and Kashmiri Garam Masala mix should definitely be in your shopping cart.

Saffron

Speaking of Kashmiri spices, the king of spices should not be missed out. Saffron is grown hugely in Kashmir and is known all over the world for its intensive commercial saffron production. Locally referred to as Koung, it has every reason to be one of the most expensive spices in the world, and the painstaking job of cultivating, growing, and harvesting saffron to perfection has been achieved ace level by the local population. Some places where you can easily find the best, purest and pristine quality of saffron are in the 4 districts of Pulwama, Kishtwar, Budgam, and Srinagar.

Walnut Wood Decorative Items

Walnut wood is a type of wood that has warm and Ric Color undertones. Being a fine-grained hardwood, it is dense and shock-resistant in nature. All these features make walnut wood the perfect type of wood for furniture and wood carving. This is why you will find numerous wood-carved products and designs in abundance in Kashmir. Although in many places walnut trees do not gain height, in Kashmir valley these trees grow longer than the usual ones. You can easily find wood-carved decorative items.

No words can do justice to the beauty that is Kashmir. It has oftentimes been described as heaven on earth by the rulers who ruled here and also the travelers who came to Kashmir. The beauty is no less than spell bounding and will leave you thinking that the place is something right of your imagination. However, if you don’t plan your holiday in Kashmir the right way then you are at the risk of completely ruining the complete Kashmiri experience.

Kashmir is the northernmost geographical point of the Indian subcontinent. This valley between the Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges offers the right climate for bone-chilling cold months and cool summers. Planning to visit Kashmir you need to make a lot of things clear beforehand, especially if you wish your holiday to be truly a memorable one.

Here we will be discussing all the issues that can ruin your holiday and how to make sure that these problems don’t happen to you.

Be Sure of the Weather Conditions

The rules for travelling to a hill station like Kashmir is simple, go there when the time is right. The ideal time to explore Kashmiri valley is during the months of March through October. In March, April, May and June you will witness clear open skies, flowers in full bloom and trees covered in lush green leaves and cool breeze. It is the best time to go sightseeing in Kashmir. The monsoon months in Kashmir are also okay because Kashmir lies somewhat in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas allowing just little to moderate rainfall levels. This won’t cause a problem in your holiday plans. If you wish to explore the famous Kashmiri snowy dream world landscape then it would be best to go there during the months of September and October.

Pack Right According To Your Itinerary

Everything depends on the time of the year you are planning to travel. But one thing is common, pack smart and pack light. If travelling during the winter months it is not necessary for you then you can pack some woolen clothing and summer clothes as well. The elevation of Kashmir is undulating so in some places you may feel warm while in other places you may feel very cold. So you have got to be prepared. You should be extra prepared to keep yourself warm during the cold winter months. Pack woollen gloves, socks, thermal layering, woolen pants and any other accessory like muffler or cap in order to protect yourself from harsh winter months.

Post-COVID Safety Measures

Travelling during a pandemic should to be taken lightly. Not only will you be putting yourself at the risk of contracting the infection but you may even be an asymptomatic carrier which means wreaking havoc anywhere you go. It is absolutely crucial to get yourself and your family properly tested before going not only to Kashmir but anywhere else. Make sure to always carry sanitizer and double mask yourself if you happen to visit a crowded market place. Better yet use a shield as well for extra safety. Sunglasses should also be worn to be more careful.

Carry Cash

You never know about the hills. Some places the ATMs work, sometimes they don’t. Some commercial places of tourist attractions accept card or UPI payments while some places don’t. It is best to carry some cash in your pocket or some other safe place in your bags. It would be best to carry cash to pay the shops, drivers or tip the restaurants.

Carry Any Documentation You Think Is Important For the Vacation

Travelling domestic or international it is important to carry all the relevant documentation you think that you may need. These might include Adhaar Card, driver’s license, passport photos and any other valid identification card you think that the authorities may ask you. If you are travelling from somewhere overseas then make sure to carry your passport at all times.

Book Hotel Wisely

Hotel booking should be done after much thought. Book a hotel that you feel is giving the right deal by going through their reviews of past customers. Make sure to look for an accommodation which is close to the sightseeing places you may think about covering while in Kashmir. To be extra careful for hotel booking make sure to book at least a month prior to your expected day of travel. It would also be a great idea to skip the top tourist seasons in Kashmir because of the obvious price surge. Since Kashmir valley is accessible for a major part of the year it would be best to go there during the off-tourist seasons.

Know-How You Will Be Travelling Within Kashmir

If you are a couple or are travelling with a small group of people then it is best to travel in Jammu Kashmir state Transport buses whose tickets can be easily availed from the tourist reception center. These buses are made to run especially for the tourists and some even follow a same-day return policy. But if you are looking to go somewhere by bus and come back a day after with a halt for one day, then you can book your tickets accordingly. Cabs and taxi services are easily available but these tourist buses provide a much cheaper option and are on budget. Another piece of advice to follow would be to never buy things from anywhere at the bus stops because they will sell you the goods at high prices since these shops already have deals with the driver.

Make Calls

Don’t be afraid to make some calls prior to your travels, to clear any doubt that you may be having regarding the stay, driver service or regarding any climate inquiry. You can also call up the hotel that you will be staying at and ask them about when was the last time the hotel or the rooms you will be staying at was sanitised completely. You can even ask them about the food availability, nearby restaurants or other food arrangements. Also ask if the hotel has warm running water, geyser facility, room heater and proper warm bedding or not. This can be done to prepare yourself and maybe even carry the stuff they don’t have yourself.

Don’t Get Fooled

Let’s get it clear, right off the bat. Kashmir is and always has been a popular tourist destination. It is understandable that a lot of people here depend on tourism for their livelihoods, this means that they welcome outside currency and may even try to dupe or charge higher prices than expected to the tourists. While booking a guide or a driver or even shopping anywhere be sure to bargain or be pre-informed about the kind of rates things carry there.

Try Bargaining

Bargaining is key. If you start paying anything they ask for then you will lose out a lot of money without even knowing how. It is always best to bargain your way through Kashmir or any other tourism state in India. While buying anything, especially souvenirs, remember to first quote the price of anything about 20-30% less. You don’t have to be completely unrealistic with your bargaining approach as it may not be viable in that case.

Phone Connection Service

Kashmir is a hub for years and centuries of cultural and political upheaval. The government has come up with many ways to curb the unrest and one way that is a very crucial piece of advice for everyone going to Kashmir is that only postpaid numbers can work. Prepaid numbers do not work in any case due to the imposition levied on the phone services here.

Pack a Medicine Box

This should be one of the most important parts of your luggage that you will be packing. Keep a secured box full of any emergency medication that you may require. These can include small dressing bandages, Bandaids, wool, gauze, Dettol/Savlon, cough syrup, cold medicine, paracetamol, anti-diarrhea medicines, Avomine for motion and elevation sickness, painkillers and any other medicine after taking an advice with your doctor.

Be Well Aware Of the Places You Are Travelling To

Now that you already know about the places you will be exploring while in Kashmir, it is crucial to know about the place as well. Not just that, know the dates and timings of the place you will be going to. Also know the exact direction and landmarks as well so that you don’t appear to be completely lost. If possible keep your GPS going as well. In short, you have to learn about what to expect.

Don’t Miss Out on Visiting Popular Tourist Attractions

There is no dearth of places to visit in Kashmir for any type of traveler. From family getaway options to solo tripping locations and from peaceful getaways to adventure-packed memorable destinations. Kashmir has it all for every type of traveler from all over the world.

Approach High Altitude Regions with Caution

When in Kashmir you will not know at the pace you gain elevation and height. The region is very undulating and it is important to know how much height you are gaining with every slope or everywhere you go because quickly gaining height may result in high altitude mountain sickness which can be deadly for many people. Be sure to carry Diamox, a tablet that controls high altitude sickness for extra caution.

Tourist Safety

There are no special things to follow while travelling to Kashmir. Although travel advisories have been issued for USA travelers while travelling to Kashmir it is important to keep yourself safe mainly because the valley is prone to political and religious unrest which does not seem to stop. Just follow all the right things that assure your safety. This means booking your hotels at the right place, not venturing out late at night or on deserted offbeat roads, always travelling in groups etc.

Kashmir is one of those rare places in the world which stays incredibly pleasant for a major part of the year. Blessed with climatic conditions that tourists can enjoy all year long, Kashmir is truly one of a kind. This real heaven on earth which is filled with lush greenery, clear babbling brooks, and impeccable serenity offers a safe haven from the pollution, harsh weather conditions, and extreme weather conditions. The fact that the Kashmir valley remains approachable throughout the year is mainly because of the fact that it is situated in somewhat a rain shadow part of the Himalayas. This enables growth of thick green cover and large green open fields as well.

Surrounded by incredible natural and scenic beauty, Kashmir has always attracted travelers, sages, philosophers, and explorers from all over the world. However, going there when the time is not right may result in your entire trip being ruined. Here is everything you need to learn about the best time to visit Kashmir:

Best Time to See Kashmir

Let’s get straight to it, the best time to visit Kashmir is during the months of March to August and if you are someone who loves spending time on the snow-clad hills, then September and October are also good for you. During the said months tourists literally throng the Kashmiri valley because the flowers remain in full bloom, trees grow out glimmering new leaves that form a thick forest cover and the air is clearer. The weather is cool and perfect to get away from the harsh scorching heat of the plains. If rigorous sightseeing and exploration is in your agenda, then spending your summer season on the lush hills of Kashmir should be on your agenda. Confused about where to go for your vacation with your family? Live in luxury? Yet have a wholesome transitional experience? Fret not! Take this as a sign and book your package or tickets to Kashmir right now!

Summer Season in Kashmir

The summer season in the valley begins from March and officially goes on till June. This has to be one of the most tourist-packed times in Kashmir. Not only because the people have their summer vacation going on but also because many people come here looking to escape and getaway from the dreadful summer heat of the plains. Sure it is cold but not too cold to keep you cooped up in one place. The temperature around this time ranges from 15 to 30 degree Celsius. The snow-covered landscape melts away and gives way to gorgeous greenery and colorful plants to thrive which also amplifies the natural beauty. It is also the perfect time to go on long walks, stroll through the city lanes, and go on trekking or hiking adventures without worrying about weather changes. However, no matter how great the weather is, it can be unpredictable at times so it always helps you to be prepared for this beforehand.

Winter Season in Kashmir

October to February officially marks the cold, chilled winter season in Kashmir. It is defined by thick snow cover, regular snowfalls and crispy cold climate. In November and December, the temperature can go to as low as zero degrees Celsius. If you have seen pictures of Kashmir covered in snow and looking like Lapland, Finland, then you should definitely make a trip to Kashmir during its peak winter months. The thick blanket of snow accompanied with clear air and immense peace all around makes Kashmir in winter just the place to be. The average temperature throughout the winter season in Kashmir ranges from -2 degrees Celsius to 12 degrees Celsius. This is the time when people come to Kashmir and enjoy winter adventure sports like skiing, snowboarding and skating as well. The best thing to do which should not be missed out in any form is the epic ropeway ride that allows you to see miles and miles of the snow-covered valley from the bird’s eye view.

Monsoon Season in Kashmir

July marks the onset of Monsoon in Kashmir which officially goes on till September. Normally people are advised against travelling on the hills during the monsoon or rainy seasons mainly because of unpredictable landslides and random flooding scare. Remember one thing that Kashmir in this case is very different from the rest of the hill stations. Most part of the valley is located in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas meaning that even the monsoon seasons here are not much so you can even have a quiet and peaceful monsoon vacation in Kashmir. The valley looks incredible because of the rain-washed trees and meadows. Just sitting by the window with nothing but the sound of the peacefully pattering rain sounds like the ultimate antidote for stress and anxiety. There are many travelers who visit Kashmir during these months mainly due to low prices in hotels and flights as well as experience the awesome peace and serenity here. It would also be a wise decision to pack rainproof stuff for your bag and yourself as well, just to be on the safer side.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the location of Kashmir is very beneficial for them as well as the tourists looking for a safe haven away from the bustle of the city. It can be visited any time of the year but being a politically charged up place you should always stick to the safe areas and not venture out into offbeat or unknown paths. When it comes to accommodation there are many places you can stay for a wonderful experience that fits anyone’s budgetary requirement ranging from high-end resorts to cheap hotel rooms as well.

Kashmiri food is a reflection of the many influences that have gripped the land over centuries, it provides unique flavors and preparations that stand out in the diverse palate of Indian cuisines. Although mostly loved for the variety of scrumptious, rich meat delicacies Kashmiri cuisine offers, there are many more elements of food that make the wholesome, nutritious, and locally produced diet.

Popular Traditional Kashmiri Food Dishes

Fruits and Dry Fruits

Kashmir was an important passage of the Silk route which ushered trade of spices from all over the world and also provided a passage for Indian spices to travel outside. The salubrious summers of Kashmir, its high altitude, and rich fertile soil make it a paradise for an array of fruits, dry fruits, and spices.

Hundreds of varieties of delicious, sweet and tart apples, juicy pears (including famous Nakh and Bagogasha varieties), apricots, plums, peaches, cherries, crab-apples, loquats, chestnuts, nectarines, quinces, grapes, mulberries of both ‘alba’ and luscious black-royal varieties, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries and many other wild-grown berries that grow in abundance in the Valley.

Along with fruits- dry fruits like walnuts and almonds are also grown plenty and their unique superior quality makes them a sought-after export commodity.

Saffron

The delicate saffron grows robustly in the precise natural environment and finds its way to Kashmiri food. Plenty of local fishes, poultry, sheep, goat, game birds, ducks, and geese make a part of the diet of Kashmiris, who are mostly non-vegetarian. The ample varieties of fruits, vegetables, dry fruits, spices, and meats that are found in Kashmir all infused in the food, developing hundreds of exquisite dishes.

These include both vegetarian and meat dishes ranging from spicy, sweet, sour, fragrant in taste and soft, crunchy, chewy in textures. Different dishes are prepared adapting to the different seasons and produce and food is central to all celebrations- like marriages and festivals. This detailed and time-consuming cuisine has given rise to a class of expert cooks and chefs that master this style of cooking.

Kashmiri Beverages

Kashmiri beverages too are unique preparations of tea, and milk infused with dry fruits and spices. Tea is consumed along with breakfast, evening snacks or after meals. Kahwa is an exotic tea traditionally consumed along with breakfast and is a blend of green tea leaves, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. Sometimes it is made richer and garnished with flaked almonds, walnuts, and dried fruits like cherries and apricots.

Kahwa is sometimes also consumed after dinner and is known to have antioxidant, digestive, and warming properties that help in bearing the cold winters. Another unique beverage is the pink coloured noon-chai. Whereas in most parts of the country, chai, or tea with milk is served with sugar, noon chai, as the name suggests, uses salt to season the tea and make for a delicious rare blend.

Kashmiris love to drink noon chai because it’s both refreshing in the heat and helps resist the cold in winter. It is known to prevent heartburn, bloating and aids in reducing stress. It is a brew of gunpowder tea (green tea leaves rolled into small balls), milk, sea salt, and baking soda and sometimes may even be spiced with cinnamon, star anise, green cardamoms and topped with pistachios.

Rice and Breads

Although rice is a staple through Kashmir, there is a unique assortment of freshly baked breads that this paradise offers. The valley is dotted with many bakeries that open shop early morning to serve warm fresh breads that are consumed in breakfast or relished as snacks. The raging street food culture of Kashmir has both meat and vegetarian delicacies, sweet and savoury treats, and most of them are accompanied by different locally produced breads.

Girda is a breakfast bread eaten for breakfast coupled with a steaming cup of kahwa, the famous street food Masala Tchot made from a spicy chickpea spread, yogurt and red chutney wrapped in lavash bread, the unique thin fried Paratha paired with steaming hot Halwa and other breads are just some of the different ways in which breads are incorporated in the Kashmiri cuisine.

Kashmir has a vibrant bakery culture that not only bake breads like Kandur, Girda, Ghyev Czhot, Chochwor, Bakarkhani, Shirmal but make some delicious cakes and fudges with locally produced dry fruits and honey.

There are predominantly two styles of cooking or preparing food in Kashmir which have several overlaps. Kashmiri Muslim style of cooking uses fewer Masale or spices but use onions, Garlic, and Pran or shallots generously in their meat and vegetarian preparations. Kashmiri Pandits on the other hand, don’t use onion, garlic, and shallots in their traditional style of cooking. Their preparations are spiced with Asafoetida or Hing, Dry Ginger Powder, Kashmiri Red Chillies, Yoghurt, and whole spices.

Kashmiri Wazwan

Perhaps the most famed food ritual from Kashmir is the Wazwan, Kashmir’s most formal and elaborate meal. It is performed like a ceremony with each dish playing an important ritual that is performed as a community. A complete Wazwan course is a laborious effort of hours of planning, preparing, and cooking the meal; the entire meal is designed keeping in mind large gatherings hence the heat and salt content are milder than other Kashmiri food items.

A typical Wazwan experience includes table settings for groups of 4, set out on the floor where different dishes are served and enjoyed from a common plate. Each delicacy is served in a particular order, slowly increasing the complexity of flavours, aromas, and textures of the meal.

First, the Tash-t-Nari is passed around and diners wash their hands from warm water in a samovar. The Waza (chief cook) personally supervises each dish which comes out of his kitchen. A Waza pays attention to every detail of the meal from handpicking the ingredients to ensuring that each dish in this rich cuisine perfects its desired flavour.

Choice delicacies such as Methi and Tabak Maaz, Rogan Josh and Rista, and a variety of Kebabs are served over rice. A traditional Wazwan will be completely meat-based, where meat is prepared along with vegetables, but certain vegetarian dishes can also be included in the Wazwan based on the likings of the guests. The meal concludes with the Gushtaba, an exclusive dish that is never refused. Phirni for dessert and a cup of Kahwah, and the Wazwan is over – a meal that is an experience in Kashmiri hospitality.

Vegetarian Foods

But vegetarians need not worry, there are plenty of options of vegetarian curries and vegetable preparations, street foods, lentils that are as unique as the meat preparations. Some of the vegetarian dishes include Nadru or lotus stem, which is a fibrous and juicy vegetable and is prepared in a quintessential Kashmiri style, Haaq or greens that are sautéed and mildly spiced, Tamatar Chaman Paneer (cottage cheese) in a tangy spicy tomato curry preparation and Dum Aloo a potato dish that is famous throughout the country that is also known to have Kashmiri origins. Food is often accompanied with a variety of chutneys and walnut chutney is a Kashmiri speciality.

Conclusion

All in all Kashmiri cuisine is a vast and complete ecosystem of indigenous ingredients, age-old recipes resulting from a myriad of cultural and religious influences, dishes that serve the purpose and produce of seasons- which can be very demanding, and methods of cooking that have evolved through centuries and retain their utility even today.

It provides complete nutrition and is uniquely flavourful. It ranges from breads, rice, vegetable dishes, meat preparations, sweet, savoury, and spicy street foods, teas and milk beverages, sweets, and cakes, spices, fruits, and nuts all brought together with the ethereal magic of the Kashmir Valley.

Much like Kashmir’s ethereal landscape, its culture is rich and unmatched. The culture is a reflection of its history that is shared by the many rulers, religions, and schools of thought that spent time in Kashmir and contributed to the distinctive identity it holds today. Having been a seat of ancient learning, Kashmir is known as Rishivar- or the abode of rishis (sages) and derives its name from Maharishi Kashyap.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

Buddhism had a vibrant presence in ancient Kashmir and it was a hotbed of spiritual and philosophical quest much into the 13th century. With the advent of Islam in the 14th century, Islamic influence began to spread and infuse Central Asian features to Kashmiri life that are seen in their lifestyle, clothing, and architecture.

Post-independence Kashmir went through rapid and turbulent changes and although this paradise on earth remains stripped much of its glorious past, its culture and way of life has not been able to divorce itself from its ancient, profound roots. Kashmir holds a unique position in its food, language, clothing, jewellery, architecture, handicrafts, rituals, and folklores.

Language of Kashmir

Kashmiri or Koshur is the language spoken in the Kashmir valley. It is Dardic by origin but has evolved to have a vocabulary including Dardic, Sanskrit, Punjabi, and Persian elements. It was originally written in Sarada script but the Persian script has come into use, although the Persian script is restrictive and not equipped with symbols for the many Kashmiri vowel sounds. Religious differences are evident in the vocabulary and choice of script.

Muslims use words of Persian origin and script whereas Hindus favour words derived from Sanskrit and write in Sarada script. The significant dialects of the language spoken are Kistwari, Poguli, and Rambani.

Kashmiri Embroidery

Kashmiri embroidery known as Kashida is an exquisite needle and thread work that involves a single long stitch to make designs mimicking Kashmir’s distinguished natural beauty like maple leaf, twigs, branches, trees lotus bloom etc. The embroidery is carried out on wool, silk, and cotton. Pashmina is the lightest and highest quality of wool that is made into shawls and coats Bejewelled with Kashida embroidery.

This thread work is carried out on pastel colours and is used to embellish a variety of clothing and linen including sarees, Salwar Kameez, Jackets, Kaftans, cushions and bed covers. They make up for some unique and everlasting traditional Indian handicraft that you can add to your collection.

Traditional Clothes of Kashmiri Men and Women

The traditional dress for both men and women of Kashmir is Pheran or Phiran. It is a long one garment that extends to the feet and consists of two woollen gowns worn one over the other providing double layer of insulation. Kangri an earthenware pot covered by wickerwork filler with simmer charcoal is held underneath the phiran to keep warm in the harsh winter the valley witnesses each year.

This practice has significantly reduced the dangers of poisoning and burning attached with it. There is a cotton version of the phiran for the summers. Phirans are usually decorated with embroideries or flower styles made with thin metal threads known as Tille in Koshur.

Kashmiri Jewellery

Kashmiri jewellery is old and traditional and commands a style that is hard to imitate. Ornaments are generally made of gold and silver, studded with precious and semi-precious stones like jade, agate, turquoise, rubies etc. The designs imitate nature and often depict shapes of almonds, grapes, cherries, chinar leaves, birds, snakes, dragons, and wild animals.

The jewellery is adorned across religions among people and some famous types of ornaments are Jiggni/Tika for the forehead, long, chained earrings a style typical of Kashmiri women known as Bala, Dor-Hor, Alcahor, Kanadoor, Jumaka, Deji-Hor, Kana-Vaji, heavy Jewelled necklaces, bangles, and anklets.

Kashmiri Wood Carvings

Kashmiri wood carving and carpets hold world standards of craftsmanship and distinctiveness. Kashmir walnut wood carving holds a Geographical Indication. The Juglans regia tree that grows widely in Kashmir is used for this particular kind of wood carving. The wood is hard and durable and its close grain and even texture facilitates fine and detailed work.

Kashmir is one of the few places where the Walnut tree is found in such abundance and the wood is carved upon making one of a kind tables, jewellery boxes, trays, chairs and more.

Kashmiri Carpets

These are heavy knotted carpets having anywhere from 200 knots to 900 knots/sq. inch in wool & silk yarn. They have attained such excellence that they rank amongst the finest in the world. Carpet weaving is a laborious and highly skilled work, weavers that are often families, sit together on a carpet, completing which can take an average of 2 years to complete.

The designs or motifs on carpets have been used for centuries and passed down from teacher to student. Some of the popular carpet motifs are Gulabdar- Kashmiri Rose, Tree of life, Gumm -maze pattern, Dabdar- box pattern, Khatam Band- intricate wood-art inspired motif to name a few.

Folk Dance of Kashmir

Dumhal is the popular folk dance performed in the Wattal region of Kashmir traditionally by men although today the dance includes women as well. Rouff is another traditional folk dance performed only by women. Both dances are performed wearing long, colourful robes and tall conical caps studded with beads and shell.

The dancers sing in chorus and are assisted by drums. The dance is performed in the Wattal region only on set locations for specific functions and it is considered a privilege to be able to perform this dance.

Kashmiri Architecture

The glory of Kashmir is pronounced even more by its vibrant architecture. Much like everything in Kashmir, its architecture is an example of its blended traditions and beliefs of ancient Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Stone architecture seen in Kashmir derives their origins from ancient Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries and stupas.

Later Turkish rule infused wood and brick architecture that is seen in Muslim shrines and mosques. The art of Naqashi (painted lacquer) and Khatamband (woodcraft where wooden pieces are fitted into one another) was brought by Persian and Central Asian craftsmen to Kashmir which was carried forward by the Mughal and Afghan rulers.

The influence of this style remains to be seen throughout Kashmir in its shrines, temples, mosques, houses, Shikara, and houseboats. Houseboats wear the Kashmiri architecture with pride and boast of geometric wooden lattice work known as Pinjra-Kari and Kharamband ceilings.

Traditionally houses in the valley were made from wood and mud which provided necessary insulation through the rough winters but with the passage of time brick and cement houses have gained popularity. The famous architectural splendors of Kashmir are shrines like Khanqah I Mualla, Naqshband Saheb, Dastgeer Sahib along with its mosque.

Fair and Festivals of Kashmir

Many fairs and festivals are enjoyed in Kashmir which include both religious and non-religious celebrations. Vethtruva was a festival celebrated across caste and religions to commemorate the day on which the source of Jhelum was supposed to have been created by Bhagwan Shiva. The popularity of such secular fairs and festivals have dwindled due to the removal of Pandits from the valley. Iduz-Zuha, Shab-e-Barat, Nouroze, Diwali, Dussehra are some other festivals celebrated with fervour in Kashmir.

Conclusion

Kashmir has an incredibly rich history of art, craft, poetry, philosophy and has been one of the greatest civilizations of the world. It’s a syncretic identity made from foreign and local cultures gave birth to a unique blend of culture, distinctive and golden in every way. Each social group has its own characteristics based on their ancient values and ethics, yet the Kashmiri society is a composite of these freely differing thoughts and lifestyles.

Kashmir will enrich your spectacular scenery as much as it will enrich the art, tradition and culture seeker inside of you, it will laden you with beautiful pieces to adorn and decorate your home with. Once you visit Kashmir, its unforgettable essence will remain with you for a long time.

Paradise on Earth, the ancient land of ethereal beauty and salubrious climate- Kashmir has lived through a tumultuous history that is only beginning to find peace and harmony in the 21st century.

History of Kashmir Is Divided Into 4 Periods

Kashmiris divide their history into four periods: the early period of Hindu Kings, when Kashmir was a vibrant seat of knowledge and philosophy famously chronicled in Rajatarangini written by the Kashmiri poet Kalhan; the second period is signified with the advent of Islam known as Salatini Kashmir; the next period is that of the Mughals known as Padshahi-i-Chagatai or Shahan-i-Mughlia, and the final period is of the Pathans known as the Shahan-i-Durrani.

Legend of Kashmir

Kashmir has the unique distinction of being the only region in India which possesses an uninterrupted series of written records of its history. As per legend, an ascetic named Kashyapa reclaimed the land now known as Kashmir from a vast lake which came to be known as Kashyapamar and later Kashmir.

The first half of the millennium Kashmir was an epicenter for Hinduism. Buddhism was introduced to the valley by the great Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century. From 9th to 12th century. Hindu culture bloomed and blossomed in the valley through a succession of Hindu dynasties until 1346 when it came under Muslim rule, which lead to the Islamization of the valley which lasted nearly five centuries, ending with Kashmir being annexed to the Sikh kingdom of Punjab in 1819 and then to the Dogra kingdom in Jammu in 1846.

The First Muslim Ruler of Kashmir

Shah Mir, of Turkish origins, is regarded as the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir. He was in the courtroom of King Ranachandra working as a chief of affairs. After Kashgar ruler Anandadeva overran Rananchandra’s kingdom, he had Muslim state employees including Shah Mir removed from their positions. Shah Mir subsequently led the revolt which led to Anandadeva’s death in 1326.

In 1339 Shah Mir founded his own dynasty and handed over the kingdom of his two sons Jamshed and Sher Ali. Soon, a struggle for power erupted between the two brothers and Jamshed emerged victorious and adopted the title of Alauddin. He died in 1363 and Sher Ali, his brother, assumed the throne and title of Shahbuddin.

He led campaigns to the south and stood victorious over the Samma Dynasty of Sindh, bringing the ruler of Kangra under his suzerainty. Shahabuddin died in 1386 and was succeeded by the next in line Qutubuddin, who was replaced in 1396 by his son Sikander.

Sikander was a controversial king referred to by the epithet ‘Butshikan’ meaning destroyer of idols. Scores of Hindu temples were destroyed during this reign and many Hindus were forced to convert under the pressure of absolute atrocities. Sikander tried to deracinate Kashmir from its Hindu roots until his death in 1416 and was succeeded by his son Amir Khan. Amir Khan was soon removed by his brother Shadi Khan in 1422 who took the title of Zain-ul-Abidin.

A Secular and Development Period in Kashmir

Zain-ul-Abidin was more benevolent than his predecessors and allowed Hindus and Buddhist to practice their religion and restored some temples as well. He constructed lakes, canals and was an ardent patron of art, literature and poetry. He died in 1472 and was succeeded by Haji Khan who ruled only for a year and was further succeeded by his son Hasan who ruled for a volatile 13 years and left the throne to his minor son Muhammad.

Mughal Empire in Kashmir

After Muhammad, Kashmir faced a time of great uncertainty for the next fifty years, a part of which was ruled by the Chak Dynasty. By the end of this 50-year period, Kashmir came under the Mughal Empire under Akbar, who founded the city of Srinagar. Until this time, Kashmir was an independent entity in itself but with the advent of the Mughals, Kashmir lost its sovereignty in 1586 and became part of the larger Mughal Empire.

Although this annexation wasn’t easy and the Mughal army was defeated twice by the defiant Kashmiris. Akbar gained this territory by deceit, offering the Chak king a hand of friendship after which his Mughal commander Qasim Khan led the annexation treacherously. Kashmir, however, did accept the Mughal rule for a long time and fought invaders through guerilla warfare continuously for many years.

During the rule of Aurangzeb, in the last decade of the 17th century the Mughal Empire began to decline. Due to chao ensued by the falling empire, the founder of the Durrani empire in Afghanistan began consolidating power in Kashmir. Kashmir was raided close to eight times between 1748 to 1767, during the course of which Kashmir was conquered by the Afghani ruler in 1752.

Afghan Rule in Kashmir

The Afghan rule lasted for about 67 years and this period was again marked by ghastly oppression, high taxation and governors at the helm of affairs who were known for their cruelty, brutality, indifference toward the local population, culture and belief system.

The Afghans fought with the Sikhs several times during their rule, the Sikhs under the leadership of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. By the late 18th and early 19th century, the British East India Company also began to consolidate its power in the Indian subcontinent.

Kashmir witnessed many conflicts and tussle of power among the Afghans, Sikhs and British East India company at this time. The first to be pushed out from the three warring parties were the Afghans. In 1819 Kashmir was brought under the control of Ranjit Singh’s forces, bringing an end to the harsh, oppressive Muslim rule that lasted for more than four centuries in the valley.

The Sikhs were tolerant and respectful towards the now multi religious Kashmir, however some decisions irked the majority Muslim population. The Sikhs ensured that there was adequate representation of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs in the administration.

British Rule in Kashmir

Ranjit Singh died in 1839 and the British came close to their long-cherished dream of annexing Punjab. The infighting within the Sikh empire, paved the way for the East India Company and soon the Company established a cantonment in Sindh and annexed Sindh in a few years, after which Punjab was also annexed in 1849. Kashmir was acquired by the British as per the Treaty of Amritsar in 1846 which made Gulab Singh the first Dogra ruler of Jammu and Kashmir after he and the British reached an understanding. The modern state of Jammu and Kashmir took shape under the Dogra rule.

Gulab Singh was succeeded by Ranbir Singh in 1857 after whom Pratap Singh came to power in 1885. Hari Singh took the throne in 1925. The Dogra rule signified the resurgence of Hinduism in the valley. Key positions in state administration were held by Kashmir Pandits.

Kashmiri Muslims remained engaged in agriculture, art, handicraft which flourished during this time. The Dogra rule came to end shortly after India gained independence. Jammu Kashmir was given the opportunity to either align with Pakistan, India or remain independent like other princely states. Maharaja Hari Singh signed a standstill agreement with Pakistan choosing to remain independent and not align with either of the two newly formed nation states.

Pakistan and Kashmir

Pakistan invaded Kashmir by sending Pashtun tribesmen from Pakistan in October 1947. Maharaja Hari Singh, having no other option, signed the Instrument of Accession with the Indian government in October 1947 by order of which the Indian troops entered Jammu and Kashmir defended it from the violence unleashed by Pakistan. Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was appointed as the Emergency Administrator of Jammu and Kashmir by Maharaja Hari Singh.

After this, India took the Kashmir conflict to the UN for resolution, Sheik Mohammad was appointed the Prime Minister of an interim government. The UN Security Council mediated a ceasefire agreement in March 1948. A referendum was also ordered by the UN Security Council, which was to be held after the Pakistani troops withdrew from the State. The referendum was never conducted as the first condition of Pakistan retreating was never met by the country.

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference

Maharaja Hari Singh abdicated as the head of the state and appointed his son Yuvraj Karan Singh, who issued a proclamation for elections of a Constituent Assembly in Kashmir. Elections were thereby held in September 1951 and Jammu & Kashmir National Conference won all seats in the Constituent Assembly.

The Constituent Assembly was convened in October 1951. In 1953 Prime Minister Sheik Abdullah was dismissed by Karan Singh and Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was appointed as the Prime Minister in August 1953; Sheik Abdullah was arrested and imprisoned on this day too, after which protests ensued killing close to 70 individuals. In February of 1954, the Constituent Assembly voted to ratify the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Constitution of India was formally adopted by the Constituent Assembly in November 1956 and the Constitution entered into force on January 26th 1957. This was followed by a tumultuous period where Sheik Abdullah was arrested and released from prison several times that fueled the unrest in the valley.

Pakistan Insurgency in Kashmir and the Plight of Kashmiri Pandits

From 1965 to 1966 armed insurgents from Pakistan attacked government installations, government police, troops and launched a military offensive within Kashmir. The Indian forces launched a counter-offensive against Pakistan, while China intervened expressing its dubious support for the Kashmiri people. Another cease-fire was agreed upon and representatives from Pakistan and India signed a Soviet Union mediated Tashkent Declaration in January 1966.

Turmoil continued in paradise on Earth and in December 1989 members of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front launched an insurgency against the Indian government. This also marked the ghastly exodus of the few remaining Kashmiri Pandits, where they were threatened to convert or die and were forced out of the valley almost overnight.

JKFL unleashed absolute terror on the Indian government, troops and locals (Kashmiri Pandits). This also marked the beginning of Pakistan sponsored militancy and terrorism in the valley which continues to this day, although has been quelled to a very large extent.

Local Kashmiri youths were fueled with hatred towards Hindus and India, Pakistan encouraged a made-up struggle for self-determination which took the shape of brutal Islamic militancy. Millions of people lost their lives, homes and property during this time, which included both government troops, officials and local Kashmiris including both Hindus and Muslims.

Temporary Special Status

Kashmir was offered a temporary special status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which allowed Kashmir limited autonomy within the larger framework of federal India. Despite this privilege and complete support of successive central governments, Kashmir remained marred by continuous violence involving militants, terrorist organizations and Indian forces.

The fate of Kashmir remained volatile, simmering with deep dissatisfaction and increasing Islamic supremacy until very recently. On 5th August 2019, the Government of India revoked the temporary special status so awarded under the Constitution of India.

Jammu and Kashmir which earlier includes Leh and Ladakh were separated and turned into two separate Union territories- Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The prominent state leaders, responsible for the worsened condition of the state were put under house arrest which led to deep dissatisfaction among the Kashmiri political elite but paved the way for an eerie time of peace in the valley that wasn’t experienced in centuries.

Conclusion

Despite the political and social turmoil that this ethereal land suffered, its enchanting beauty did not discourage people from visiting it. Kashmir remained and continues to be a shining gem in the crown of India. The recent political and administrative restructuring brings a new dawn of peace and tranquility in the valley. Instances of violence have drastically reduced and the people of Kashmir are slowly beginning to relish the rare and refreshing socio-political peace the valley is witnessing.

It is quite obvious to have some queries related to your next planned journey. This is the time to buckle up Yourself for the pious Amarnath Yatra 2024. We have compiled up some of the most common and valid questions running in the mind of a pilgrim.

Q 1. Why There Is A Need To Register For Amarnath Yatra?

Ans. Due to the limited carrying capacity of the mountainous tracks of Amarnath, the government has limited the number of tourists to 15,000 per day by looking after their safety and security.
