About Amarnath Cave & Yatra 2026

The Amarnath Cave is a natural limestone cave at 3,888 metres (12,756 ft) in Anantnag district, Jammu & Kashmir — approximately 141 km from Srinagar. A naturally-forming ice Shivling appears inside the cave each year, growing and shrinking with the lunar cycle. Alongside it are two smaller ice formations representing Mata Parvati and Lord Ganesha.

The cave is accessible via two routes: Baltal (helicopter to Panjtarni + 6 km trek) or Pahalgam (46 km traditional trek or helicopter to Panjtarni + 6 km trek). Both routes end at Panjtarni — the helicopter's final landing point.

Amarnath Yatra Registration 2026

Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim including helicopter Yatra. Without valid registration, no one is permitted at any helipad or base camp checkpoint. Three types are available:

Individual registration: For solo travellers or groups of fewer than 10 persons
Group registration: For groups of 10 or more persons
NRI registration: For non-resident Indians travelling from abroad

Register at jksasb.nic.in or at designated bank branches — Punjab National Bank, SBI, J&K Bank, Yes Bank. Fee: Rs. 150 per person.

Early morning breakfast, then drive to the Baltal helipad (15 km from Sonmarg, approx. 30 minutes).
Board the helicopter for Panchtarni (flight time 15-20 minutes).
From Panjtarni, the trek is 2-3 hours (6 km) on foot to reach the sacred Amarnath cave.
Pony and palki services are available at Panjtarni at extra cost.
With the helicopter Yatra, you receive special priority passes to cut short the queue time for Darshan of the ice lingam.
Important: All pilgrims must report to the Panjtarni helipad for the return helicopter by 3:00 PM. No return flight is available after this cut-off time.
After Darshan of Lord Shiva, return to Panchtarni and board the helicopter back to Baltal.
Drive from Baltal to Srinagar (95 km, approx. 2.5-3 hours).
