Agra's History — A Brief Overview
p>Agra's golden age began with the Mughal Empire. The city was called Akbarabad during the Mughal era and served as the Mughal capital under Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. The city was first mentioned in the Mahabharata as "Agrevaṇa." Sultan Sikandar Lodi was the first to move the capital from Delhi to Agra in 1506. Emperor Akbar made Agra a great cultural and administrative centre. But it was Shah Jahan (1628–1658) who gave Agra its defining legacy — the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort's white marble additions, and Jama Masjid were all built or significantly expanded under his reign. After Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in 1658, the Mughal capital shifted back to Delhi, and Agra gradually declined in political importance while preserving its extraordinary architectural legacy.Where to Stay in Agra — Hotel Guide

Common Scams in Agra — How to Avoid Them
Agra is safe but has well-known tourist scams. Know these before you go:
Marble shop scam: Your driver or guide suggests a "famous government marble emporium" — often a shop where they earn high commission. Marble quality and prices are inflated. Solution: Visit shops only on your own initiative; buy from government emporiums or Shilpgram directly.
Fake tourist office scam: Street-level "offices" near the Taj claiming to be "Government Tourism" sell overpriced tours and tickets. Solution: Book monument tickets only at asi.payumoney.com. Book tours only through registered operators.
Fake ASI guide scam: Touts outside monument gates claiming to be licensed guides. Solution: Book ASI-licensed guides through us in advance.
Closed hotel scam: Taxi driver insists your hotel is "closed" or "full" and takes you to an alternative (where they earn commission). Solution: Call your hotel directly in front of the driver if he says this; show your confirmed booking.
Auto-rickshaw overcharging: Wildly inflated fares outside the station or airport. Solution: Use app-based Ola/Uber or negotiate fares before boarding; ask your hotel for standard fare estimates.
Gemstone investment scam: A friendly local offers a "business deal" in gems. Solution: Never buy expensive items from casually met locals; always use certified stores.
