Planning your GangotriYamunotri Yatra is important to have a smooth yet fulfilling Yatra experience. You first need to decide on your budget, select a travel date, plan your itinerary, and check weather conditions before embarking on the Yatra. You also need to be physically fit for the pilgrimage.
September to mid-October and May-June are considered to be the best times to visit Yamunotri and Gangotri, as the roads are easy to travel and the weather is pleasant. In the summer months, the average temperature ranges between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius, which is ideal for visiting the temples and sightseeing.
Monsoon (July-August) is not a good time to visit Do Dham due to the chances of heavy rainfalls that may result in slippery roads and landslides. This makes traveling a bit dangerous. The autumn season is a good time to visit Gangotri and Yamunotri due to clear, and a calm pilgrimage experience.
During winters (November to April), both the shrines are closed due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions.
Note: Yatra season is short - April to November only. Book in advance.
The Do Dham Yatra package cost will vary depending on the package you select, the amenities you choose, the activities you undertake, and the season when you decide to travel to these sacred sites. On average, the Yatra will cost you around INR 20,000 to INR 60,000.
The distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri is around 228 km. It includes a 6 km trek to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti. The distance from Gangotri to Janki Chatti by road is around 222 kilometers. It will take around 6-8 hours to complete this journey.
Haridwar → Barkot: ~210 km, 6-7 hrs
Barkot → Janki Chatti (Yamunotri trek base): 45 km, 1.5-2 hrs
Janki Chatti → Yamunotri (trek): 5-6 km, 2-3 hrs
Barkot → Uttarkashi: 82 km, 3-4 hrs
Uttarkashi → Gangotri: 100 km, 3.5-4.5 hrs
You do not need to trek to reach Gangotri as the temple is easily accessible by road. From Janki Chatti, you will have to undertake a 6 km trek to Yamunotri. The trek is of moderate difficulty and steep. If you do not want to trek, you can opt for Pitthu (human porter who carries you on a backpack chair), Palkis, and ponies.
You're advised to commence the trekking journey early in the morning so that you can return before dusk.
Both Yamunotri (3,293m) and Gangotri (3,100m) are at high altitude. Pilgrims coming from plains cities may experience altitude sickness - headache, nausea, dizziness, or breathlessness.
Prevent it: drink 3-4 litres of water daily, walk slowly, rest on your first day at each base town. If symptoms don't improve within 30 minutes of rest, descend immediately.
Medical aid posts are available at Janki Chatti, along the Yamunotri trek route, and at Gangotri. Senior pilgrims and those with heart/BP/diabetes must carry a doctor's fitness certificate.
Budget Do Dham Yatra packages allow you to save money while still enjoying the benefits of exploring the Do Dham sites. This package includes comfortable accommodation, vegetarian meals, and smooth transportation.
The Luxury Do Dham tour package allows you to have the best travel experience. With this package, you can avail of various amenities, including tasty meals, luxurious accommodations, and transfer via a private vehicle.
Premium packages sit between Budget and Luxury. You get 3-4 star hotels, a private AC vehicle, and VIP Darshan at both temples - without the full luxury price tag. A good choice for families who want comfort without overspending.
With the Do Dham Yatra package by helicopter, you can avoid the physical exhaustion that is often associated with long-distance driving by road. The helicopter journey is a faster, luxurious, and more comfortable way to explore Gangotri and Yamunotri.
Do Dham journey involves a moderate difficulty trek, so seniors should ensure they're physically fit for the pilgrimage. They should get their medical check-up done before the Yatra and stay hydrated. During the Yamunotri trek, seniors can opt for a Pony/Palki ride to reduce the physical strain associated with the traditional journey. Helicopter Yatra is also a good option for seniors.
Harsil is a hidden jewel of Uttarakhand situated in the lap of the Himalayas. This place is quite famous among nature lovers and travel enthusiasts, as there are many treks near this site.
Situated at an altitude of around 1,220 meters, Barkot serves as a scenic gateway. This charming hamlet offers a tranquil haven for pilgrims embarking on the Do Dham Yatra.
Hanuman Chatti is situated near the confluence of the Hanuman Ganga and the Yamuna Rivers. Around Hanuman Chatti, there are many shrines, including the Hanuman Temple.
Surya Kund is a naturally boiling hot spring (~90°C) located near the Yamunotri temple. It is named after Surya Dev (the Sun God), as Goddess Yamuna is believed to be the daughter of Surya. Pilgrims traditionally cook rice and potatoes wrapped in cloth in this spring as prasad - DO NOT bathe in Surya Kund. For a holy dip, use the nearby Jamunabai Kund.
Kharsali is a picturesque village in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. It is known for being the Goddess Yamuna's winter home. During winter, the Yamunotri Temple's idol is brought here.
Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) is the nearest airport to the Do Dham sites. It has good connectivity with major Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. From Jolly Grant Airport, take a taxi or bus to Haridwar or Rishikesh (about 1-1.5 hrs) and begin your Yatra from there.
Haridwar and Rishikesh are the nearest railway stations to Gangotri and Yamunotri. From Rishikesh or Haridwar, you can book a taxi or bus to Gangotri or Janki Chatti, from where the trek to Yamunotri starts.
For Yamunotri: buses from Rishikesh/Haridwar go to Barkot. From Barkot, local shared taxis run to Janki Chatti (45 km), which is the trek base for Yamunotri.
Helicopter service to Yamunotri and Gangotri starts from the Sahastradhara helipad at Dehradun.
Registration is mandatory for visiting both Yamunotri and Gangotri in 2026. Without a valid registration e-pass, you will be stopped at checkpoints and denied entry to the temples. Registration is completely free.

Have a hearty breakfast because today is going to be strenuous. The coach takes you to Janki Chatti (45 km from Barkot), the actual trek base for Yamunotri. From here, the 5-6 km journey to Yamunotri will be covered either on foot or on horseback or in a Doli. (Charges for horseback and palanquin are to your account.)
On arriving at Yamunotri, you will see the Surya Kund - a naturally boiling hot spring at ~90°C. Pilgrims cook rice here as sacred Prasad to take home. For a holy dip, pilgrims use the Jamunabai Kund nearby, where hot and cold water mix to a comfortable temperature. Separate bathing areas for men and women are available.
Yamunotri is usually the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra and the Yamunotri temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. After Darshan, the group returns to Hanuman Chatti and boards the coach for the drive back to Barkot and sleep in the hotel.

Arrive in Harsil 5-6 hours later after covering the ~130 km route over winding mountain roads and check into your hotel.
You might want to venture out to admire the beauties of the surrounding mountains, forests of Deodar and the torrential Bhagirathi. Near Harsil there is Dharali village that you might want to visit. Note: the actual winter home of Goddess Gangotri is Mukhba village, also near Harsil, where the deity is ceremonially moved every winter when the temple closes.
Breakfast over, the group sets out for Gangotri - the spiritual highlight of this Do Dham Yatra, a distance of 40 km covered in 2 hours, all the while enjoying the magnificent view all around.
Arrive at Gangotri and have Darshan at the Gangotri temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga, who, it is said, descended to earth here and landed on the matted locks of Lord Shiva. Walk over to the river where you can view the submerged Shivling. After Darshan, the group returns to Harsil for the overnight stay.

In the traditional Chardham Yatra sequence, Yamunotri is visited first because it is the westernmost shrine and comes first on the route from Haridwar. Geographically, Barkot (Yamunotri base) comes before Uttarkashi (Gangotri route) - so visiting Yamunotri first makes practical route sense too. Start with Yamunotri, then proceed to Gangotri.
Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River and the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, situated at an altitude of 3,293 metres near the base of Bandarpoonch Peak. The main draw is the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the Surya Kund (boiling hot spring where pilgrims cook Prasad), and the Divya Shila - a sacred rock pillar near the temple entrance where prayers are offered before the main Darshan.
You cannot bathe in the Surya Kund - it is naturally boiling at ~90°C. However, at the Jamunabai Kund (a separate pool nearby), hot spring water mixes with cooler Yamuna water to create a comfortable temperature for bathing. Separate bathing areas for men and women are provided here. This ritual bath is traditionally taken before entering the Yamunotri temple.
Clothes, statues of Gods, cosmetic jewelry, utensils and Trinkets can be bought in the Yamunotri temple main market. As you walk through this market, you will have the opportunity to interact with the locals.
May and June are ideal for the Gangotri Yamunotri Do Dham Yatra - weather is pleasant, roads are clear, and temples are fully open. September-October is another great window with fewer crowds. Yamunotri and Gangotri both open on 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya) and close in October-November 2026.
Yes. Chardham Yatra registration is mandatory for both Yamunotri and Gangotri in 2026. Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Carry your e-pass at all times - it will be checked at multiple checkpoints.
Pony ride: approximately INR 1,200-1,800 one way from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri. Palki (palanquin): approximately INR 3,000-5,000 one way. Prices vary by season and availability. Pitthu (porter chair): similar to Palki. Book from the official counter at Janki Chatti.
No. Each shrine needs a separate full day - Yamunotri involves a 5-6 km trek from Janki Chatti, and Gangotri needs a 40 km drive from the base town. The standard itinerary keeps them on separate days (Day 3 for Yamunotri, Day 5 for Gangotri).
No. The Gangotri Glacier (Gaumukh), the actual source of the Bhagirathi River, is 18 km from the Gangotri temple via a separate trek requiring permits. It is not part of the standard Do Dham Yatra itinerary. If you wish to visit Gaumukh, it needs to be planned as an extension.
