Best Places to Visit in Kerala
There are several places to explore on a Kerala trip that make it special:
Cochin (Kochi)
Cochin, also called Kochi, is a beautiful port city in Kerala. This spot is famous for its blend of cultures: Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Chinese influences are visible in its architecture and food. Tourists can explore Fort Kochi, Mattancherry Palace, the Jewish Synagogue, Chinese fishing nets, Cherai Beach, and more. The peaceful backwaters are ideal for boat rides. Cochin is often called the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea' and is the most common starting point for Kerala tours.
Munnar
Munnar is situated at around 1,600 metres above sea level in the Western Ghats and is one of Kerala's most visited hill stations. It is famous for its rolling tea plantations, cool weather throughout the year, and fog-covered hills. The Tea Museum explains how tea is processed; Eravikulam National Park (home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and the Neelakurinji flower that blooms once every 12 years) is a short drive away.
The park usually closes in February and March for the Nilgiri Tahr calving season, and the Kerala Forest Department announces the exact dates each year. Anamudi Peak, the highest mountain in South India at 2,695 metres, is visible from within the park. Note: trekking to the Anamudi summit is restricted; visitors can explore the viewpoints and the walking trail within the park's Rajamalai tourism zone.
Alleppey (Alappuzha)
Alleppey is Kerala's backwater capital and the most popular destination for houseboat stays. The Alleppey Lighthouse, constructed in 1862, stands 28 metres tall and offers views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding landscape. The broader Alleppey backwater network connects to Kumarakom, Kuttanad, and Vembanad Lake. A night on a houseboat drifting through the backwaters, with rice fields, coconut groves, and village life on either side, is the most iconic Kerala experience for most travellers.
Varkala Beach
In South Kerala, Varkala is a beach town set against dramatic red laterite cliffs. The Papanasam Beach at Varkala is considered sacred by many Hindu pilgrims, who believe bathing here helps cleanse sins. The Janardhana Swami Temple (believed to be around 2,000 years old) overlooks the beach. Water sports including surfing are available; the beach is also popular for yoga retreats and Ayurveda centres. Best visited between November and March.
Thekkady (Periyar)
Thekkady is home to Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the finest wildlife reserves in South India. Boat rides on the Periyar Lake offer chances to spot elephants, wild boar, Sambar deer, and otters along the lakeshore. The surrounding Spice Hills area grows cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, and spice plantation tours are a popular add-on. The Kadathanadan Kalari Centre in Thekkady hosts live Kalaripayattu (Kerala's ancient martial art) performances every evening.
Wayanad
Wayanad, in the northeastern corner of Kerala, is a district of forests, tribal communities, and misty plateaus. Key spots include Chembra Peak (the highest peak in Wayanad at 2,100 m, with a heart-shaped lake midway on the trek), Soochipara Falls, Banasura Sagar Dam (the largest earth dam in India and second largest in Asia), Pookode Lake, and the Edakkal Caves, a rock shelter with ancient carvings that Kerala Tourism dates to at least 6,000 BC.
The Chembra trek needs prior permission from the Forest Range Office at Meppadi. Reaching the Edakkal Caves needs a steep uphill walk from the entrance. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary shares its border with Nagarhole Tiger Reserve in Karnataka and is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
Kovalam
Kovalam, about 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram, is Kerala's best-known beach resort town. It has three beaches: the main Lighthouse Beach (most popular), Hawah Beach, and Samudra Beach. Swim only in the areas marked by lifeguards, and avoid the sea during the monsoon. Kovalam is also one of Kerala's main centres for Ayurveda treatments: traditional massage, detox, and panchakarma therapies are available at dozens of resorts and clinics. The season runs October to March.
Kumarakom
Kumarakom, on the eastern shores of Vembanad Lake, is a bird sanctuary and backwater destination known for its luxury resorts and quieter alternatives to Alleppey. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a winter destination for migratory birds. Herons, egrets, and other species arrive from November to February. Houseboat cruises and canoe rides through narrow channels are popular year-round.
How to Reach Kerala
By Flight
Kerala has four main airports: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Cochin International Airport (largest in Kerala), Calicut (Kozhikode) International Airport, and Kannur International Airport. They connect to major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet provide direct flights to Kerala from major cities. Average flying time: 2 to 4 hours from North India; 1 to 2 hours from South Indian cities.
Cochin International Airport is the world's first fully solar-powered airport (since 2015).
Cochin International Airport is the most convenient arrival point for Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, and Kumarakom. Thiruvananthapuram Airport is better for Kovalam and Varkala.
By Train
Kerala's main railway stations are Thiruvananthapuram Central, Ernakulam Junction (Kochi), Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Alappuzha, connected to cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai.
Key trains: Kerala Express (New Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram, about 50 hours), Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani Express (Hazrat Nizamuddin to Thiruvananthapuram, about 41 hours), and Netravati Express (Mumbai LTT to Thiruvananthapuram, about 31 hours). From Chennai or Bengaluru: 12 to 15 hours. Timetables change, so check the current schedule on IRCTC before booking.
Train travel through Kerala's coast and backwaters is scenic. The Konkan Railway route (Mumbai to Kerala) is known for its views.
For most trains, reservations open 60 days before the journey date. Book as soon as the window opens for peak season travel (November to February).
By Road
You can reach Kerala by private vehicle or public transport from nearby states: Bengaluru (~9 to 10 hours to Kochi via NH 544), Coimbatore (~1.5 hours to Palakkad), Mangaluru (~5 to 6 hours to Kozhikode), and Chennai (~12 to 13 hours to Kochi).
Travelling through national highways like NH 544 and NH 66 can be scenic, especially as you cross the Western Ghats and descend into Kerala's green landscape.
Long-distance AC sleeper buses from Bengaluru, Chennai, and Coimbatore to Kerala are a cost-effective option.
Getting Around in Kerala
Private AC vehicle: Most comfortable for sightseeing. All our Kerala packages include a private car with driver.
Auto-rickshaws: Widely available in cities and towns. Agree on the fare before you start if the meter is not used.
Ferries and boats: State Water Transport Department ferries connect Alleppey and Kottayam through backwater routes. Houseboat charters are arranged through operators.
KSRTC buses: Economical option for longer distances between cities. AC buses run between Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thrissur.
App cabs and autos (Uber, Ola, Rapido): Available in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode.
Kochi Metro and Water Metro: Useful for getting around Kochi city and its nearby islands.
Things to Do in Kerala
Houseboat Cruise in Alleppey
A houseboat cruise in Alleppey (Alappuzha) is part of most first-time Kerala itineraries. Traditional kettuvallam (riceboat houseboats) have been converted into well-appointed floating hotels. Most have 1 to 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, and a sit-out deck. You drift through the narrow backwater channels, past rice paddies, coconut groves, and small villages, with meals cooked fresh on board. Overnight houseboat stays are the most popular option, so book 2 to 3 months ahead for peak season (November to February).
Wildlife Safari
Wildlife experiences in Kerala are varied. Periyar National Park (Thekkady) is best for boat safaris on the lake, where elephants, gaur, and deer come to the lakeshore. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary borders the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve and is good for jeep safaris. Parambikulam Tiger Reserve (Palakkad district) is one of India's most biodiverse reserves and has guided treks. Kerala is also a good birdwatching destination: Thattekad Bird Sanctuary and Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary draw serious birders.
Water Sports
Water sports in Kerala are available at several beach destinations. Kovalam and Varkala are the most popular, offering jet skiing, kayaking, parasailing, and surfing. For those who want calmer activities, canoe rides through the backwater channels in Alleppey and Kumarakom are excellent. The Periyar Lake in Thekkady has bamboo rafting.
Kathakali & Cultural Shows
Kathakali is Kerala's most famous classical art form, an elaborate dance-drama with colourful costumes and face paint depicting stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Kalaripayattu, Kerala's ancient martial art, is another major performance art. Both can be watched at cultural centres in Kochi (Kerala Kathakali Centre near Fort Kochi), Thekkady (Kadathanadan Kalari Centre), and Trivandrum. Shows are usually held in the evening, so check timings and book ahead.
Ayurveda Experience
Kerala is one of India's best-known destinations for Ayurveda treatment. Treatments range from a simple 60-minute Abhyanga massage to a full 14 to 21 day Panchakarma detox program. Kovalam, Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur have many Ayurveda centres. For proper treatment (not spa-style), look for centres classified by Kerala Tourism as Ayur Silver, Ayur Gold, or Ayur Diamond, or accredited by NABH, and check that a qualified Ayurvedic doctor is on site. Traditional Ayurvedic practice in Kerala considers the monsoon (June to August) a good time for longer rejuvenation therapies.
Kerala Festivals - Best Times for a Cultural Experience
| Festival | When (Approx.) | Where | What to Expect |

Best Time to Visit Kerala
The best time to explore Kerala is from November to February. The winter months offer cool and pleasant weather across all regions. Outdoor activities like trekking, houseboat rides, and beach visits are most enjoyable. Skies are clearer and the landscape is fresh after the monsoon. This is also the peak tourist season, so book accommodation and houseboats 2 to 3 months in advance.
| Season | Months | Weather | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Winter) | November to February | 23°C to 32°C on the coast, 13°C to 22°C in Munnar. Mostly dry, with cold nights in the hills. | Backwater cruises, beaches, wildlife safaris, trekking, Munnar and Wayanad |
| Shoulder (Pre-Monsoon) | March to May | Hot and humid, 25°C to 33°C on the coast. Pleasant in hills. | Hill stations (Munnar, Wayanad), budget travel, fewer crowds on the coast |
| Monsoon (Off-Peak) | June to September | Heavy rain, lush green, waterfalls at full flow. | Ayurveda treatment, waterfall visits, romantic monsoon retreats. Not ideal for beaches. |
| Post-Monsoon | October | Transition month: rain reducing, fresh green landscape. | Good value, fewer crowds, nature photography |
Famous Kerala Foods to Try
Kerala's food varies by region and community, but coconut, rice, seafood, and spices feature in many local dishes. Here's what visitors should not miss on a Kerala tour:
Sadya: the traditional feast served on a banana leaf, with rice, 20+ side dishes including avial, thoran, sambar, and payasam. Essential during Onam and at most traditional restaurants.
Appam with Stew: lacy rice flour crepes served with a mild coconut milk-based vegetable or chicken stew. One of Kerala's most popular breakfast dishes.
Puttu and Kadala Curry: steamed rice cake layered with coconut, served with spiced black chickpea curry. A hearty breakfast found everywhere in Kerala.
Kerala Fish Curry: fish cooked in a clay pot with kudampuli (Malabar tamarind) or raw mango, coconut, and spices. Every region of Kerala has its own version.
Karimeen Pollichathu: pearl spot fish wrapped in banana leaf and grilled or shallow-fried. A speciality of the Alleppey backwater region.
Kerala Prawn Curry: prawns in a rich coconut milk and tamarind gravy. Available at coastal towns from Kochi to Trivandrum.
Unniyappam: small round rice cakes with jaggery, bananas, and coconut. A popular temple prasad and street snack.
Shopping in Kerala - What to Buy
Spices: Cardamom, pepper, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, widely sold in the Thekkady and Kumily spice markets.
Kasavu Sarees: Kerala's traditional sarees with gold borders, available in Thrissur and Kochi.
Coir Products: Mats, baskets, wall hangings made from coconut fibre, widely available in Alleppey and Trivandrum.

Practical Tips for Your Kerala Tour
Carry light cotton clothing for the coast and plains; add a light jacket for Munnar and Wayanad (especially November to January nights).
Carry an umbrella or raincoat, as rain can come without warning even in the peak season. This is especially true in Munnar and the hills.
Mosquito repellent is essential, particularly for houseboat stays and forest areas (Thekkady, Wayanad).
Dress modestly when visiting temples and cover shoulders and knees. Some temples (like Guruvayur) do not allow non-Hindus inside.
Carry some cash (INR) for markets, small eateries, and waterfall entry fees, as card machines are not reliable everywhere.
Book houseboat stays and Kathakali shows in advance, especially for travel between November and February.
For Ayurveda treatment, choose a centre classified by Kerala Tourism or accredited by NABH, and consult the Ayurvedic doctor on the first day. Don't book treatments blindly from a menu.
Respect the environment. Kerala's backwaters and forests are ecologically sensitive. Do not litter; support eco-friendly operators.
Eravikulam National Park in Munnar usually closes in February and March. Check the dates before you plan Munnar sightseeing for those months.

Practical answers about Kerala Tour Packages
What is the best Kerala tour package?
Ans: For most first-time visitors, the best Kerala tour package is a 5-day itinerary covering Kochi (1 night), Munnar (2 nights), and Alleppey houseboat (1 night). This covers colonial history, hill station tea gardens, and backwater cruising within a practical timeframe. Our 4-day package on this route starts from ₹14,500 per person. The 5-day Fascinating Kerala package, which adds Thekkady and Kumarakom, starts from ₹15,500. Add Kovalam (beach) for a longer trip.
How much does a Kerala trip cost from major Indian cities?
Ans: Our 7-day Kerala holiday package starts from ₹20,500 per person for the ground package (double sharing, standard hotels). Flights are not included. Airfare depends on your departure city, travel date, and how early you book, and it is usually lower from South Indian cities like Hyderabad or Chennai than from Delhi. Ask us for a quote with flights if you want a single price.
How many days are enough for Kerala?
Ans: 6 to 7 days is ideal to cover Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, and Alleppey with comfortable travel between destinations. A focused 4 to 5 day trip is enough for 2 to 3 destinations. If adding Kovalam, Kanyakumari, or Wayanad, plan for 8 to 10 days. Rushing Kerala in under 4 days is possible but leaves little time for the experiences that make the trip worth it, such as houseboat stays, spice plantation walks, or evening Kathakali shows.
Which month is best for Kerala?
Ans: November to February is the best time for most Kerala destinations. Beaches, backwaters, wildlife, and hill stations all offer good conditions. October is good for post-monsoon greenery and value pricing. August to September is ideal if your main goal is the Onam festival or Nehru Trophy boat race. June to August (monsoon) is good for Ayurveda treatment and waterfall visits but not for beach holidays. \
Which beaches are best in Kerala?
Ans: The most popular beaches in Kerala are Kovalam (well-developed beach resort), Cherai (near Kochi, famous for Chinese fishing nets nearby), Varkala (clifftop beach with a sacred bathing beach), and Bekal (near a 400-year-old fort in Kasaragod). Marari Beach (near Alleppey) is a quieter alternative popular with nature travellers.
What are the unexplored places in Kerala?
Ans: Some of Kerala's lesser-visited destinations include Munroe Island (backwaters and traditional fishing culture near Kollam), Nelliyampathy (tea plantations and scenic views in Palakkad district), Vagamon (meadows and pine forests between Thekkady and Alleppey), and Beypore (ancient dhow-building port near Kozhikode).
What are some of the most popular travel destinations in Kerala?
Ans: Alleppey, Kumarakom, Wayanad, Thekkady, and Munnar are the most visited destinations. Kochi (Cochin) is the most common starting point. Kovalam and Varkala are the top beach destinations. Guruvayur, Thrissur, and Trivandrum are important for temple visits.
Is Kerala hot or cold?
Ans: Kerala has a tropical climate, warm and humid throughout the year. Coastal areas like Kochi, Alleppey, and Trivandrum stay between 23 and 33°C depending on the season. The hill stations (Munnar, Wayanad) are significantly cooler, ranging from about 13 to 26°C, and winter nights in Munnar can drop below 10°C. The best overall weather is from November to February.
How can I plan a trip to Kerala?
Ans: The easiest way to plan a Kerala tour is to start with your budget, travel dates, and the type of experience you want: beach, backwater, hills, wildlife, or a mix. Choose a duration (4 days minimum for a short trip, 6 to 7 days for a comprehensive one). Book flights early (especially for December and January). Contact Namaste India Trip for a customised package based on your group size and preferences. We handle hotels, transport, houseboat bookings, and sightseeing.
Which is the best month to visit Munnar?
Ans: The best time to visit Munnar is from September to March. October and November are ideal to see waterfalls at full flow and the landscape at its greenest after the monsoon. December to February offers the coolest weather, and temperatures can drop below 10°C at night. Eravikulam National Park usually closes in February and March. The Neelakurinji flower (blooms once every 12 years) last bloomed in 2018, and the next bloom is expected around 2030.
Is a Kerala tour budget-friendly?
Ans: Kerala can be done on a budget (basic guesthouses, KSRTC buses, local eateries) or can be quite expensive (luxury houseboats, hill resorts, Ayurveda centres). Our packages start from ₹14,500 per person for 4 days. Compared to international holidays, Kerala offers excellent value, but it is not necessarily cheaper than North Indian hill stations. Shoulder season (March to May) offers better rates than peak season (November to February).
What are the must-see cultural experiences in Kerala?
Ans: The top cultural experiences on a Kerala holiday package are: Kathakali dance-drama (Fort Kochi, Thekkady), Kalaripayattu martial art performance (Thekkady, Trivandrum), the Thrissur Pooram festival (April or May), the Nehru Trophy Vallam Kali boat race (usually August, Alleppey), and a traditional Kerala Sadya meal on a banana leaf. A visit to a working tea factory in Munnar and a spice plantation tour in Thekkady are also worth adding.
What is included in a Kerala tour package?
Ans: Our Kerala tour packages include hotel stay, meals as per the plan, a private AC vehicle with driver, sightseeing, fuel, toll, and parking. Flights, entry tickets, show tickets, and personal expenses are not included.
Can I customise my Kerala tour package?
Ans: Yes. You can change the hotel category, add or drop a destination, add a houseboat night, or pick your own travel dates. Share your group size and budget, and we will send a revised itinerary with the price.
Are flights included in the Kerala package price?
Ans: No. The prices on this page are for the ground package. Flight tickets can be added to your quote or booked separately.
Which is better for a houseboat stay, Alleppey or Kumarakom?
Ans: Alleppey has more houseboats and more backwater routes, so it suits most first-time visitors. Kumarakom is quieter and is known for its lakeside resorts. Our 5-day Fascinating Kerala Tour Package covers both.
