Aurangabad: The city of Aurangabad was founded in 1610, on the site of a village, Khirki by Malik Ambar - the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah II. When Fateh Khan, Malik Ambar's son turned successor in 1626, he gave the city the name 'Fatehpur'.
Aurangabad today is a bustling city of Maharashtra with diverse big and small industries, fine silken textiles, and exquisite hand woven brocades of silver and gold fabrics, Himroo of the world fame.
To scholars and lovers of art and culture the city is more familiar as the gateway to the ancient caves of Ajanta and Ellora, both famous as treasure houses of Indian Art and Sculpture.
Aurangabad Caves: The almost forgotten caves of Aurangabad lie just outside the city. Excavated between the 2nd and 6th century AD, they reflect TANTRIC influences in their iconography and architectural designs. In all there are nine caves which are mainly Viharas (monasteries).
Overnight stay at the hotel.
Ajanta caves: Nestling in an inner fold of the Sahyadri hills, 100 km from Aurangabad in the shape of a mammoth horse- shoe, are the 30 rock-hewn caves of Ajanta. The Caves date from the 2nd century BC. Discovered in 1819 by a group of British army officers, these startling achievements took around 600 years to create.
Carved with little more than a hammer and chisel, Ajanta, once the retreat of Buddhist monastic orders features several 'Chaityas' (chapels) and 'Viharas' (monasteries). Return to Aurangabad and overnight will be at Aurangabad.
Ellora Caves: Impressive in their own right are the rock-hewn temples and monasteries of Ellora that lie just 30 km away from Aurangabad city. In all, there are 34 cave temples, 12 Mahayana Buddhist caves (550-750 AD), 17 Hindu caves (600-875 AD), and 5 caves of the Jain faith (800-1000 AD). Kailas Temple (cave16), the central attraction at Ellora, is the most remarkable.
If time permits - then visit the Bhadra Maruti Temple (only temple where Lord Hanuman is seen in a sleeping posture).

This was my first visit to Aurangabad and I really enjoyed the entire journey. The Ellora Caves were the main attraction for me, especially the Kailasa Temple carved from a single rock. It is difficult to imagine how such a structure was created centuries ago. Ajanta Caves were equally beautiful with their paintings and calm atmosphere. I also liked visiting Bibi Ka Maqbara during the city tour. The itinerary was well balanced and did not feel rushed. A great choice for anyone who loves history, culture, and architecture.
A very enriching travel experience. I had always wanted to see Ajanta and Ellora, and this tour finally made it possible. The ancient Buddhist caves at Ajanta were peaceful and the artwork was impressive. Ellora’s Kailasa Temple was the most unforgettable part of the trip. The arrangements in Aurangabad were comfortable and sightseeing was properly planned. Winter season made the visit even better because the weather was cool. I would recommend this tour to travellers who want to experience India’s incredible heritage.
My family and I had an amazing time exploring Aurangabad, Ajanta, and Ellora. The children were curious about the stories of the caves, and even they enjoyed the visit. Ajanta Caves surrounded by hills looked beautiful, and Ellora Caves were simply magnificent. We also spent time at Bibi Ka Maqbara and tried some local dishes. The arrangements were convenient and the schedule allowed us to enjoy each place properly. Garmi thodi zyada thi during the afternoon, but the overall journey was fantastic and educational.

I travelled with my parents and this tour was a comfortable way to discover Maharashtra’s history. The Ajanta Caves were very peaceful, and my parents enjoyed listening to the stories behind the old paintings. Ellora Caves and Daulatabad Fort were also interesting stops. The hotel stay was decent and the arrangements were good. Thoda travel time zyada laga while going towards Ajanta, but the views on the way were nice. We enjoyed local Maharashtrian food in Aurangabad, especially the traditional thali. Overall, it was a satisfying family trip.
I visited Aurangabad with my friends and this short tour was a perfect introduction to Maharashtra’s heritage. The first impression of Ellora Caves was unforgettable, especially the Kailasa Temple. The amount of detailing in the carvings is unbelievable. Ajanta Caves were peaceful and the old paintings gave a glimpse into ancient times. Our family trip to Aurangabad was planned mainly to see Ajanta and Ellora, and both places exceeded expectations. My children enjoyed learning about the history behind the caves. Ellora Caves and Kailasa Temple were the biggest highlight for everyone. We also visited Bibi Ka Maqbara and spent some relaxed time in the city. The December weather was pleasant and made sightseeing comfortable. The only small issue was that walking around the caves can be tiring for elders, so comfortable footwear is important. Overall, a very enjoyable family holiday.
I travelled with my parents and the tour arrangements made our journey stress-free. The ancient caves at Ajanta and Ellora were the main attraction, and both places offered different experiences. My father especially liked the architecture of Kailasa Temple at Ellora. We enjoyed quiet evenings in Aurangabad and tasted some local dishes. February weather was comfortable for sightseeing. The only thing to remember is that Ajanta is a little away from the city, so keep enough time for travel. Overall, a satisfying heritage tour.
Ye family ke saath ek bahut hi lovely cultural trip tha. Ajanta aur Ellora Caves ki beauty honestly photos mein jitni achhi lagti hai, real mein usse bhi zyada impressive hai. Mere kids bhi kaafi excited the ye jaanne ke liye ki itne bade structures aur carvings itne saal pehle kaise banaye gaye honge. Aurangabad sightseeing bhi achhi rahi, especially Bibi Ka Maqbara humein bahut beautiful laga. Journey comfortable aur smooth thi. Bas Ajanta tak travel time thoda zyada laga, jiski wajah se bachche thode tired ho gaye, but wahan pahunchne ke baad laga ki journey worth it thi. Overall, family ke saath ek memorable holiday raha.
Travelling from Assam to Aurangabad was a long journey, but visiting Ajanta and Ellora made it worthwhile. The caves represent India’s rich heritage in such a unique way. I especially liked Ellora’s Kailasa Temple because of its size and detailed carvings. Ajanta Caves had a different charm with its paintings and peaceful location. The city tour was also interesting and gave us a glimpse of Aurangabad’s culture. The itinerary was practical and easy to follow. A great experience for anyone who enjoys historical places.
I travelled solo on this Ajanta Ellora tour and found it a good way to explore the heritage sites without worrying about arrangements. The caves were the main reason for my visit and they did not disappoint. Ellora Caves especially impressed me with the scale of the carvings. Aurangabad sightseeing was also interesting, including Daulatabad Fort. The trip was comfortable overall. October weather was slightly warm during the day, but mornings were pleasant. A good short tour for history lovers.
I travelled with my wife for this Ajanta Ellora tour and we enjoyed the historical experience. The caves are much more impressive when seen in person compared to photos. Ajanta’s paintings and Ellora’s rock-cut temples were the best parts of the journey. We also visited Daulatabad Fort, which gave us some beautiful views. The hotel was comfortable, though the sightseeing schedule felt slightly packed on one day. Still, everything was arranged properly and we returned home with good memories.
This was my first visit to Maharashtra and I was impressed by the heritage of Aurangabad. The caves are truly unique. Ajanta had a peaceful feeling with its Buddhist history, while Ellora showed amazing engineering and creativity. The monsoon season made the surroundings greener, which added beauty to the journey. Some areas were slippery because of rain, so visitors should be careful. Apart from that, the trip was comfortable and enjoyable. A good option for people who love history and photography.
I booked this tour for a quick break and it was a good decision. The ancient caves were the biggest attraction and seeing them personally was an amazing feeling. Ellora Caves were huge and impressive, while Ajanta offered a more peaceful experience. Aurangabad city tour was also interesting. June was hot, especially during afternoon sightseeing, but the overall arrangements were comfortable. Thoda garmi ka issue tha, but the places were worth visiting. Good short trip for anyone interested in culture and history.
We planned this tour during the monsoon season and enjoyed the greenery around Aurangabad. The caves looked beautiful with the fresh surroundings. Ajanta Caves were calm and spiritual, while Ellora Caves showed incredible architectural skills. We also had a good time exploring local markets and trying Maharashtrian food. The only challenge was the weather, as rain made walking around some places slightly difficult. Apart from that, the experience was very good and we enjoyed every part of the journey.
I travelled solo for this Ajanta Ellora Caves Tour and had a peaceful experience. The historical importance of these places is truly fascinating. Ajanta Caves impressed me with its ancient paintings, and Ellora Caves surprised me with the massive rock-cut architecture. I also enjoyed visiting Bibi Ka Maqbara and exploring Aurangabad city. May was quite hot, especially while walking outdoors, so morning visits are better. A few more relaxed breaks would have helped, but overall it was a meaningful and enjoyable journey. I would definitely recommend this tour to heritage lovers.
We booked this tour for a weekend break, but honestly it was just an average experience for us. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves were impressive and much bigger than they look in pictures. Ajanta had a peaceful natural setting, while Ellora’s huge rock-cut structures were definitely worth seeing. Aurangabad sightseeing was also decent. However, the afternoon heat made walking around the open areas quite tiring, and by the end of the day we felt quite exhausted. The schedule also felt a little packed for a short weekend trip, so there wasn’t much time to relax. The trip was okay and we enjoyed the main attractions, but a more relaxed pace would have made the experience better.
Namma couple trip to Aurangabad overall decent experience aagittu. Journey mostly relaxed aagittu mattu together historical places explore maadodu chennagittu. Ajanta Caves tumba beautiful, especially cave olagina ancient paintings really impressive anistu. Ellora Caves alli huge sculptures mattu carvings nodoke interesting aagittu. I had been looking forward to exploring Aurangabad’s historical places, but the experience was quite disappointing for me. Ajanta Caves were interesting and the countryside drive was pleasant, but the long journey made the visit tiring. Ellora Caves had some impressive carvings and structures, although by that point I was already exhausted and couldn’t enjoy it properly. Bibi Ka Maqbara and the city sightseeing were okay, and trying the local food was probably the better part of the day. April was also quite hot, especially during the daytime, which made walking around uncomfortable. The itinerary felt too tiring for me, with a lot of time spent travelling and walking. I still managed to see some beautiful historical places, but overall the trip did not turn out as enjoyable as I had hoped.
To properly explore the Ajanta and Ellora caves, it usually takes around two whole days. It’s a common practice among travellers to dedicate one day to each of the caves. Normally, it takes a span of 5-6 hours to explore each cave.
The caves are located approximately 100 km from each other. You can cover this distance in about 2.5 hours by road. Travellers usually choose to stay at Aurangabad, which acts as a central point to both the caves and makes for a good staying option.
Yes, you can take your shoes inside the Ajanta caves. However, you are asked to remove your shoes before entering some sections of the cave. It’s done to preserve the paintings and other artifacts in that particular region. Otherwise, you can totally take your shoes inside the caves. You’re even advised to wear good, comfortable shoes, as traversing the cave requires climbing and long walks.
There is no dress code for visiting caves. However, you’re advised to wear modest clothes. In summer, light cotton clothes would be best, while in winter, wearing warm woollen clothes is advised.
Ajanta Caves stay closed on Mondays, while the Ellora Caves are closed on Tuesdays. Tourists, generally, visit on weekends and club their visit to the caves.
