Before there were Buddha statues, his followers worshipped his footprints. The humble feet symbolized the transcendents grounding and reminded people that the Buddha was not a god but a mortal, a real man in whose literal and metaphorical footsteps they could follow.
In the year 623 B.C., Buddha was born on a full moon (which is now celebrated as Vesak, the festival commemorating the triple event of Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death). According to the legends surrounding this birth, the baby began to walk seven steps forward, with a lotus flower appearing on the ground at each step.
He was looking for a deeper wisdom, a solution that went deep into the nature of human suffering and demonstrated how to end it once and for all.
According to legend, when the prince was 29 years old, he ventured outside the palace gates for the first time and was so affected by the poverty and suffering he encountered that he renounced his lavish way of life, left his family, and wandered through Nepal and into India for five years, where he eventually attained.
For several decades, he travelled throughout northeastern India, spreading his philosophy to anyone who was interested, regardless of gender or caste. Even Brahmins and nobility were persuaded to convert. After 45 years of travelling and teaching, the Buddha died in 483 B.C.E.
