The Gangotri Yatra from Delhi is a sacred pilgrimage to the holy Gangotri Temple, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand and dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is one of the most important shrines of the Chhota Char Dham Yatra, attracting devotees from across India.
According to Hindu belief, King Bhagirath performed deep penance here to bring the River Ganga down to Earth for the salvation of his ancestors. The sacred Bhagirathi River originates from the Gaumukh Glacier and flows through Gangotri before merging with other rivers to form the Ganga at Devprayag.
Open from April to November due to heavy snowfall in winter, Gangotri also offers stunning Himalayan views and nearby attractions like Gaumukh Glacier and Bhairon Ghati, making it a spiritually and naturally enriching journey.
A Gangotri tour package from Delhi ensures a smooth and comfortable pilgrimage experience amidst the divine beauty of the Himalayas.

Gangotri Yatra registration is mandatory for all pilgrims in 2026. Without a valid e-pass, entry to the temple can be denied at checkpoints.
The Gangotri temple was built in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gurkha military commander. The original temple structure was later developed by the Gorkha general Shivram Singh. The white granite temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
Gangotri is the second Dham in the traditional Chhota Chardham Yatra sequence (Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath). Pilgrims bring Gangajal from here to offer at Kedarnath, which is the next stop on the Chardham circuit.
The temple faces the Bhagirathi River. A few metres below the temple, the Bhagirath Shila - a sacred rock where King Bhagirath is believed to have performed penance - can be seen. The submerged Shivalinga (Gange Ki Dhar) in the river is visible and deeply venerated.
Note: There is no helicopter service to Gangotri. The temple is accessible only by road.

No, trekking is NOT required to visit Gangotri temple. The temple is accessible by motorable road - drive straight up to the temple area. However, the nearby Gaumukh Glacier (source of Bhagirathi River) is 18 km from Gangotri via a separate trek requiring Forest Department permits. Gaumukh trek is optional and not part of this standard 5-day package.
The best time to visit Gangotri is May-June and September-October. In May-June, the weather is pleasant (5-15°C daytime) with clear skies and good road conditions. September-October offers fewer crowds and stunning autumn views. Temperatures at Gangotri (3,415m) remain cold at night throughout the season - always carry warm layers. Avoid July-August due to monsoon landslides.
From Gangotri, you can see stunning peaks including Shivling (6,543m), Bhrigupanth (6,772m), and the Gangotri Group of peaks. The sacred Shivling peak - shaped like a Shiva lingam - is particularly visible from the temple area and is a sight that pilgrims cherish. Gaumukh glacier, source of the Bhagirathi River, is also visible on the Gaumukh trek (18 km from Gangotri).
The distance from Delhi to Gangotri is approximately 500 km by road. The journey takes 12-14 hours including rest stops: Delhi → Haridwar (210 km, 5-6 hrs) → Uttarkashi (170 km, 6-7 hrs) → Gangotri (100 km, 3-3.5 hrs). This is why the trip is planned across 3 days of driving.
