What is Yamunotri Yatra?

Yamunotri Yatra is a holy trip that is highly revered in Hinduism. On this sacred pilgrimage, you visit the Yamunotri Temple, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna.

It is also one of the Dhams in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, and is visited first in the Yatra.

Why Yamunotri Is First Dham in Char Dham Circuit?

As per the Hindu customs, the Char Dham Yatra should be done in a clockwise direction, starting from the west. And Yamunotri falls on the westernmost side of the Char Dham circuit, and hence it's visited first.

Another reason is that Char Dham Yatra follows the origin of the sacred rivers: from west to east. And Yamuna (originating at Yamunotri) lies west of River Ganga (originating at Gangotri). Hence, the order:

Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath

Also, from the travel perspective, it is practical to start your Yatra from Yamunotri. This Dham is located at the lowest altitude among all the Dhams, and therefore helps the pilgrims acclimatise better and helps them only gradually move towards the other higher altitudes sites.

History of Yamunotri Temple

The history of Yamunotri goes back to the ancient ages. This is another reason the place where the temple is located is considered to be extremely pious in nature.

Yamunotri is also the place where the prominent Hindu Sage Asit Muni used to stay and take his bath in both the rivers of Ganga and Yamuna, which in those times used to flow next to each other. So the sage set up his hermitage here.

Later on Adi Shankaracharya, the propagator of Advaita Vedanta, re-established this temple as a part of the Char Dham Yatra circuit, which further increased its spiritual significance in Hinduism.

Significance of Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. It also honours the Yamuna River, as the river is considered to be the manifestation of the Goddess herself. This makes the Yamunotri temple a unique and one of the rarest temples in India.

The Goddess is also the sister of Yama, the God of death, in Hindu mythology. It's said that whoever visit the temple does not suffer from untimely or painful death.

People from all over the globe flock here to offer their prayer to the goddess at her place of birth. Devotees make their way to the shrine after covering a gruelling trek from Janki Chatti to worship the glistening black pyramidal stone. The stone is said to be the form of the goddess herself, making it her holy abode.
