Himachal Pradesh can be visited in every season. The right time depends on the activities you want to enjoy and the places you want to cover. For most travellers, March to June is the best time to travel to Himachal Pradesh. Here is a season-wise overview. The temperatures are typical for hill stations such as Shimla and Manali and change sharply with altitude.
Peak Tourism Season

During this time, you can also enjoy bonfires and village stays. Many homestays and resorts in Himachal offer bonfires, local food tasting, music nights and village walks.
Festivals: Halda Festival (Lahaul and Spiti), Losar Festival, Winter Carnival (Manali), Christmas, New Year.
Shoulder Season

Off Season

You can explore Jibhi, Tirthan Valley, McLeod Ganj and Chamba in the monsoon.

Manali (2,050 m) is best known for mountain adventure and its setting on the Beas River. You can try skiing, river rafting, paragliding and trekking.
Explore famous tourist spots in Manali like Hadimba Devi Temple, Old Manali village and the hot springs at Vashisht.
Solang Valley, 13 km from Manali, has a ropeway and snow activities in winter. The 9.02 km Atal Tunnel leads to Sissu in Lahaul and is the usual alternative when Rohtang Pass is closed.
Rohtang Pass
Located 51 km from Manali at 3,978 m, this high-altitude mountain pass is one of the best places to see and photograph snow-capped mountains and glaciers.
Commercial activities such as snow scooter and horse rides have been restricted here since a National Green Tribunal order in 2015. Rohtang Pass usually remains open from May to October or early November, depending on snow clearance and official orders. Tourist vehicles need a permit. Closure days change from season to season, so check the official Rohtang permit portal before you go.
Kangra
Kangra Valley brings together cultural heritage, natural beauty and spiritual sites, and deserves a place on your Himachal Pradesh itinerary.
It suits travellers with varied interests. You can enjoy paragliding in Bir Billing and see the Dhauladhar ranges.
Explore heritage places like Kangra Fort, Masroor Rock Cut Temples and Baijnath Temple. Kareri Lake is a trek for those with extra days.

Dharamshala, the winter capital of Himachal, is famous for its greenery, tea gardens and the HPCA stadium, which hosts IPL matches.
McLeod Ganj is also known as 'Little Lhasa'. It is the residence of the 14th Dalai Lama and a centre of Tibetan Buddhism.
Explore Kalachakra Temple, Bhagsunath Temple and Waterfall, Naddi View Point and Dal Lake. The Triund trek also starts from here.

Best Things To Do In Himachal On Your Trip
Here are some exciting activities you can add to your Himachal trip. Activity charges are usually paid on the spot:
Enjoy Paragliding in Bir Billing
Soar above the green valleys of Bir Billing on a paragliding flight. The take-off point at Billing is at 2,290 m and the landing site at Bir is at 1,400 m.
It gives you a chance to see the Himalayan landscape from above. Flying runs from March to June and from October to November, and stops during the monsoon.
Try River Rafting In Beas And Satluj Rivers
In Himachal, river rafting is one of the most popular adventure activities. The Beas near Kullu and the Satluj near Tattapani have white water stretches that run through mountain terrain.
April to June is the best time to enjoy white water rafting. Rafting starts again after the monsoon, from mid September to October.
Scenic Trekking Trails of Himachal Pradesh
If you are planning your vacation in Himachal Pradesh, add at least one trek. Himachal has trekking trails for beginners as well as seasoned trekkers.
Triund and Kheerganga suit first-time trekkers. Hampta Pass, Pin Parvati and the Great Himalayan National Park trails need more days and fitness.
Ice Skating in Shimla
Shimla has an open-air ice-skating rink near the Ridge that has been in use since the 1920s. The ice forms naturally in winter.
Skate rentals and coaching are available on site. December to February is the season, but the rink opens only when the nights are cold enough for ice to form.
Snow Adventure in Manali and Kufri
Manali and Kufri are the two best-known places for snow adventure in Himachal Pradesh.
Enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing during the winter months for a memorable winter vacation with family.

Keep Documents Safe: Carry a government photo ID for every traveller and keep documents and cash in an anti-theft bag. Wear comfortable footwear.
Licensed Operators: Hire only licensed guides and adventure operators for trekking, rafting and paragliding.
Enough Cash: ATMs and digital payments work in the main towns, but carry enough cash for remote areas where ATMs or mobile internet may not work.

Responsible Tourists: Avoid plastic items and do not litter anywhere. It is our responsibility to keep the beauty of Himachal Pradesh intact.
Altitude: Rohtang Pass is close to 4,000 m. Anyone with a heart or breathing problem should speak to a doctor first and avoid exertion at the pass.
