One of the four religious Char Dham sites in Uttarakhand is the Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the 108 Divyadesams (holy sites) of Vishnu followers. The snow and the cold winters of the region ensure that the temple is not available throughout the year. It remains open for six months and closes in winter. Nestled between Nar and Narayan ranges, the beauty of Badrinath Dham is a sight of pure bliss.

Why Opening and Closing Date of Badrinath Dham Matter?

It is essential to know the opening and closing dates of Badrinath Dham for safe pilgrimage experience in high-altitude Himalayan regions. Planning the pilgrimage without knowing about the appropriate weather, season and time challenges like extreme cold, road closures and lack of relevant services. Hence you need to know everything about opening and closing time of Badrinath Dham for safe and comfortable journey.

Closing Season- Badrinath Dham is located in the high-altitude Himalayan region between the scenic Nar and Narayan Mountain ranges at an elevation of 10,279 feet. So, in winters, (October to Early November) the sacred site is inaccessible to the devotees due to heavy snowfall.

Peak Pilgrimage Months It is typically open around the end of spring, in May. According to the Hindu Panchang, the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee determines the exact date of opening and closing of the temple, in consultation with the priests.

Winter Seat- The winter seat of Badrinath Temple is Narsimha Temple in Joshimath.

What to Pack- It is advisable to pack warm clothes with layers, woolens, jackets to endure the cold temperatures of the high- altitude region. Also wear comfortable shoes for trekking. Also, carry medications like Diamox if you have altitude sickness and pain relievers, and rehydration salts.

Note: Some local sources also suggest 24 April 2026 as a tentative opening date for Badrinath Temple. Additionally, 13th November is a predicted Badrinath closing date 2026.

Badrinath Temple Timings for 2026

Although the exact 2026 schedule has not been finalized, the timings might be similar to previous years and will be as follows:

Activity

Note: These are the indicative ones and therefore can vary. Badrinath, in earlier years, had a midday opening and closing time.

Badrinath Temple Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The opening and closing of the Badrinath Temple are performed by locals and priests with full enthusiasm and joy.

Opening (Kapat-Udghatan) of Badrinath Dham

A set of rituals is done before the temple is reopened. To begin with, there is the Tel Kalash Yatra, a journey parade with an oil container. After that, a ceremony of the Gadu Ghada is performed, followed by Vedic chanting.

The inner sanctum doors (Kapat) are opened at an auspicious time (Muhurat), and the idols are installed by the head priest of the shrine. Mostly, the final declarations are made on Basant Panchami after taking into consideration the astrological calculations.

Closing (Kapat‑band) Ceremony Badrinath Dham

Special rituals are done on the Badrinath temple closing day that typically falls on Vijayadashami or on the day near Bhai Dooj/Diwali. The doors to the temple are closed after the last aarti.

The idol (Vigraha) is then transferred to its winter station- Joshimath at the Narasimha Temple or Pandukeshwar, where it is worshiped during the winter. An eternal presence is maintained by having a divine lamp (Jyoti) burning in the closed temple.

Why is Badrinath Temple is Closed in Winter?

Badrinath Dham is located in high-altitude Himalayan ranges. The temperature in that region drops down to subzero levels making the climate extremely harsh for pilgrimage experience. Moreover, due to heavy snowfall, the road to Badrinath is inaccessible for the devotees. The entire path will be covered with thick sheet of snow, making it impossible for the pilgrims to start Badrinath Yatra. Hence, The Badrinath Temple is closed in winters.

There are different types of Puja performances that the temple offers that range from a couple of days to years, depending on the type of Puja you wish to do. There are online and offline puja options also available that don’t require the presence of the devotee. There are many Puja Paaths and Abhishek Puja rituals that the temple offers for the pilgrims.

Q-1: What are the Badrinath Temple darshan timings in 2026?
Ans: Badrinath Temple opens at 4:30 AM for the Mahabhishek puja. General darshan runs from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM (noon), resumes at 4:00 PM and continues until 9:00 PM. The temple remains closed between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM for the afternoon Rajbhog ritual. These timings are set by BKTC and may vary slightly during festivals.

Q-2: What time does Badrinath Temple open in the morning?
Ans: Badrinath Temple opens at 4:30 AM for the sacred Mahabhishek ceremony, conducted by the Rawal (head priest). General darshan for regular pilgrims begins at 6:00 AM. Arriving by 5:30 AM allows you to attend the morning Abhishek aarti — a rare and spiritually elevating experience that most day-trippers miss.

Q-3: What is the closing time of Badrinath Temple?
Ans: The temple closes for the night at 9:00 PM after the Shayan Aarti. There is a significant midday closure from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM for the Rajbhog and afternoon rituals. Pilgrims who arrive post-noon will have to wait until 4:00 PM for the evening session.

Q-4: What are the aarti and puja timings at Badrinath Temple?
Ans: 4:30 AM: Mahabhishek (ceremonial bathing of Lord Badrivishal). 5:00–6:00 AM: Abhishek and early morning rituals. 6:00 AM: General darshan opens. 12:00 PM: Rajbhog — temple closes. 4:00 PM: Evening darshan opens. 7:30–8:00 PM: Gita Paath and evening Aarti. 9:00 PM: Shayan Aarti, temple closes. The evening Aarti with the Alaknanda River flowing alongside is an experience of a lifetime.

Q-5: When did Badrinath Temple open and when does it close in 2026?
Ans: Badrinath Temple kapat opened on 23 April 2026 at 6:15 AM — announced by the BKTC following astrological calculations on Basant Panchami. The tentative closing date for 2026 is 13 November 2026. The idol of Lord Badri Vishal is then shifted to Joshimath’s Narsingh Temple for winter worship.

Q-6: Is Badrinath Temple open on Sundays?
Ans: Yes, Badrinath Temple is open every day throughout the yatra season, including Sundays. Sunday tends to see higher footfall, especially from pilgrims arriving after weekend travel from Rishikesh and Haridwar. Weekday mornings (Tuesday–Friday before 8:00 AM) are the calmest for darshan.

Q-7: When is Badrinath Temple closed in 2026?
Ans: Badrinath Temple is tentatively scheduled to close on 13 November 2026. The closing date is officially declared on Vijayadashami (Dussehra). After closure, the divine idol travels to Narsingh Temple, Joshimath, where worship continues through winter. The temple reopens the following April/May.

Q-8: What is the Badrinath Temple darshan time table?
Ans: Morning session: 4:30 AM (Mahabhishek) to 12:00 PM (noon closure). Evening session: 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM (Shayan Aarti). Key aarti times: Morning Abhishek 4:30 AM, Bal Bhog 6:15 AM, evening Gita Paath 7:30 PM, Shayan Aarti 9:00 PM. The noon closure is strictly followed — no exceptions.

Q-9: Is there VIP darshan at Badrinath Temple and how do I book it?
Ans: Badrinath’s closest equivalent to VIP darshan is the Mahabhishek Puja, which costs ₹4,700 per person and takes place between 4:30 AM and 6:30 AM — before general darshan begins. This gives you direct, close access to the deity with a priest. For 2026, Badrinath VIP darshan basic priority entry is ₹300–₹500. Book only via badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in — do not pay agents or WhatsApp sellers.

Q-10: What is the puja cost and ticket price at Badrinath Temple?
Ans: General darshan is free. BKTC-fixed puja rates: Kapoor Aarti ₹151, Abhishek ₹350, Sahastra Archana ₹1,100, Vishesh Puja ₹2,100, Mahabhishek ₹4,700. All puja bookings should be made through badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in. Be aware: fraudulent agents near the temple often demand inflated rates — always insist on an official receipt.

Q-11: How much time does darshan take at Badrinath Temple?
Ans: On less crowded days, darshan takes 45–90 minutes. During peak May–June, queues can extend to 3–5 hours for general darshan. The best strategy: arrive before 6:30 AM for morning darshan, or come after 5:00 PM for the quieter evening session. Booking a puja (especially Mahabhishek) bypasses the general queue.

Q-12: What is the darshan process at Badrinath Temple?
Ans: After removing footwear at the entrance, pilgrims proceed through the Sabha Mandap to the inner sanctum for darshan of the black stone idol of Lord Badrivishal in a meditative posture. Prasad (tulsi leaves, misri, and charnamrit) is distributed at the exit. If you’ve booked an Abhishek, a priest guides you through the personal worship ritual.

Q-13: What is the best time to visit Badrinath Temple?
Ans: May–June and September–October. For a festive, high-energy pilgrimage experience: visit in May immediately after the kapat opening — the Himalayan landscape is stunning and the temple atmosphere is charged. For peace and clear skies: September is ideal — post-monsoon clarity means spectacular views of Neelkanth Peak and Nar-Narayan Hills from the temple courtyard.

Q-14: Which month is best for Badrinath darshan?
Ans: June tops the list for most pilgrims — roads are good, weather is stable, full temple services are available. For photographers and nature lovers, September offers the best conditions. Avoid the first two weeks of May if you cannot handle large crowds — the opening rush brings tens of thousands of pilgrims.

Q-15: What is the dress code for Badrinath Temple?
Ans: No strictly enforced code, but modest attire is expected. One unique rule at Badrinath: no leather items (shoes, bags, belts) inside the temple complex. Traditional Indian attire is most appropriate. Practically, given the 3,133-metre altitude, layered warm clothing, a rain jacket, and proper trekking shoes are essential even on summer days.

Q-16: Are mobile phones allowed inside Badrinath Temple?
Ans: Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum). Store your phone in your bag or at the designated counter before entering. Photography of the outer temple area, Tapt Kund, Brahma Kapal, and the Alaknanda riverfront is freely permitted and the views are extraordinary.

Q-17: How do I reach Badrinath from Delhi, Haridwar, and Rishikesh?
Ans: From Delhi (~540 km, 14–16 hrs): Via NH 7 through Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Joshimath. From Haridwar (~320 km, 10–12 hrs) and Rishikesh (~295 km, 9–11 hrs): same route. Helicopter from Sahastradhara, Dehradun reaches Badrinath in ~30–45 minutes. Nearest railway station: Rishikesh. Nearest airport: Jolly Grant, Dehradun.

Q-18: Is Char Dham Yatra registration mandatory for Badrinath?
Ans: Yes, biometric Char Dham registration is compulsory. Register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or at counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar (Garhwal), and Joshimath. The registration slip is checked at multiple points including Srinagar (Garhwal) and Joshimath. Your registration number is also required for puja booking.

Q-19: Are men and women both allowed at Badrinath Temple?
Ans: Yes, Badrinath Temple is open to all devotees — men, women, and people of all faiths and nationalities. There are no gender-based entry restrictions. The temple trust follows an inclusive approach consistent with Vaishnava traditions.

Q-20: What is Badrinath Temple famous for?
Ans: Badrinath is one of the four Char Dhams and one of the 108 Divya Desams — the holiest Vishnu temples recognised by the Vaishnava tradition. It is famous for the black stone idol of Lord Badrivishal in a meditative posture, the Tapt Kund (natural hot water spring for ritual bathing), Brahma Kapal (sacred ghat for ancestor rites), and the tradition of the Rawal — a Nambudiri Brahmin from Kerala who serves as head priest.

Q-21: What are the places to visit near Badrinath Temple?
Ans: Mana Village (3 km) — last Indian village before the Tibet border, with Vyas Gufa, Saraswati River, and Ganesh Gufa. Vasudhara Falls (9 km trek). Brahma Kapal (1 km) for ancestral rites. Tapt Kund (at temple) for ritual dip. Satopanth Lake (24 km trek, 4,402 m). Joshimath (45 km) — Narsingh Temple, Auli ski resort, and the base for Valley of Flowers trek.

Q-22: What is the history and significance of Badrinath Temple?
Ans: Badrinath is one of Hinduism’s most ancient pilgrimage sites, referenced in the Vishnu Purana and Skanda Purana as Badrikshetra — where Lord Vishnu performed penance under a badri (jujube) tree. The temple was revived by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE, who recovered the idol of Badrivishal from the Narad Kund and reinstalled it. The current temple structure was built by the Garhwal kings and later renovated multiple times.

Q-23: Is there accommodation near Badrinath Temple?
Ans: Options range from the GMVN Tourist Rest House and BKTC dharamshala in Badrinath town (basic, affordable, close to temple) to private hotels and guesthouses. Joshimath (45 km) has more comfortable accommodation options. Book well in advance for May–June — rooms sell out weeks ahead. Most pilgrim accommodation offers vegetarian food only, in line with the temple town’s traditions.

Q-24: Can I visit Badrinath during monsoon season (July–August)?
Ans: You can, but it involves risk. The approach road via NH 7 is prone to landslides during monsoon — road blockages can strand travellers for 1–3 days at a time. The temple remains open, but check BRTF (Border Roads Task Force) road condition updates before travelling. September is a much safer and more rewarding alternative to visiting during peak monsoon.

Q-25: Are tour packages available for Badrinath?
Ans: Yes — Char Dham packages (Yamunotri–Gangotri–Kedarnath–Badrinath, 10–14 days), Do Dham packages (Kedarnath–Badrinath, 6–7 days), and helicopter Char Dham packages (3–6 days) are all widely available from Delhi, Mumbai, Haridwar, and Rishikesh. Helicopter packages are especially popular with senior citizens, families with young children, and time-constrained pilgrims.

Q-26: How many days are needed to visit Badrinath?
Ans: Allow a minimum of 2 days: Day 1 for the journey from Joshimath/Rishikesh, Day 2 for darshan and Mana Village sightseeing. For a comfortable experience with time to explore Vasudhara Falls, Brahma Kapal, and Tapt Kund, 3 days is ideal. If combining with Kedarnath, most packages allocate 4–5 days for this section.

Q-27: What things should I do in Badrinath besides temple darshan?
Ans: Take a dip in Tapt Kund (the natural hot spring — this is tradition before darshan). Do Pind Daan at Brahma Kapal if you wish to perform ancestral rites. Visit Mana Village and photograph the Saraswati River before it disappears underground. Walk to Vasudhara Falls. Attend evening Aarti at the river bank. Explore the small local market for prasad, rudraksha, and woolens.

Q-28: Can pregnant women or senior citizens visit Badrinath?
Ans: There are no religious restrictions. Badrinath is accessible by road (no trek required) — making it manageable for pregnant women and senior citizens compared to Kedarnath. However, the high altitude (3,133 m), winding mountain roads, and limited medical facilities should be carefully considered. Consulting a doctor before travel and hiring a comfortable private vehicle are strongly recommended.

Q-29: What are the Badrinath Temple rules and regulations?
Ans: Key rules: No leather items inside the temple complex. No footwear beyond the entrance. No photography in the Garbhagriha. No eating inside the temple premises. Maintain queue discipline — do not push or bypass the line. Loud conversations and phone calls inside are considered disrespectful. The unique rule: no conch (shankh) is blown at Badrinath — rooted in the temple’s mythology about the demon Vatapi.

Q-30: What is the weather at Badrinath and what to carry?
Ans: Badrinath at 3,133 m has an alpine climate. May–June: 7°C–18°C days, 1°C–5°C nights. Monsoon: 10°C–15°C with rain and fog. October: 4°C–12°C. Must carry: warm jacket, thermal layers, rain poncho, trekking shoes, personal medication, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Altitude sickness can affect some pilgrims — acclimatise overnight at Joshimath before proceeding.

Badrinath is a holy Hindu town famous for being home to Badri Vishal. The ancient temple with a dynamic history sits majestically on the banks of the holy river Alaknanda and amidst the stunning natural beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas. The temple of Badrinath sits against the backdrop of the twin mountain peaks of Nar and Narayan and springs to life when the temple opens its gates for Darshan. Situated within the district of Chamoli which is also known as the jewel of Garhwal, the culture of Badrinath is extremely unique. Surrounded by numerous interesting sightseeing options and dotted with temples and holy sites, a holiday in Badrinath will definitely open your eyes to new avenues in life.

If you are looking to book a package to Badrinath, then here is something you need to know about its culture for a more immersive experience:

People of Badrinath

The people of Badrinath are highly religious and simple folks with most of their livelihood dependent on either agricultural activities or pilgrimage tourism related to the Dham Yatra in Badrinath. The locals have kept their age-old customs and traditions alive throughout the year which has made Badrinath not only a part of the Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand but also a part of the All India Char Dham Yatra along with Dwarkadhish Temple, Jagannath Temple, and Rameswaram. During the winter months, local Badrinath residents move to the lower reaches of the Himalayas in order to get away from the snowfall and extremely harsh cold weather season. They make their way back to Badrinath to continue on with their business and life there during the summer season.

Religion and Language of Badrinath

Badrinath without a doubt is a completely Hindu town. It is also a very important religious and spiritual Hindu center mainly due to the presence of the holy temple of Badri Narayan. Initially, before the arrival of Adi Shankaracharya in Badrinath, Buddhism was gaining a lot of momentum, and the region was inhabited by monks and Buddhists. Adi Shankara felt the need for the re-establishment of Hindu culture in the Garhwal region and inspired the king of Garhwal to get rid of the majority of Buddhists. This was best done by creating the temple of Badrinath and attracting Hindu pilgrims from far and wide in order to attain moksha. Other than the Hindu population, Jains also occupy a major part of the population with Hindu and Garhwali being the dominant language of the locals.

Fairs and Festivals of Badrinath

Fairs and festivals in Badrinath are the typical ones that are celebrated throughout India. Many colorful fairs and festivals take place with great zeal and enthusiasm. Other than the mainstream Hindu festivals of Diwali, Holi, Maha Shivratri, etc, the locals also celebrate their traditional festivals like Jauljibi, Thal, Basant Panchami, and Ganga Dussehra. The most famous and loudly celebrated festival in Badrinath is the opening and closing procession of the temple of Badrinath. During the opening of the temple, the idol of Lord Vishnu is transferred to the main temple of Badrinath from his winter home in Joshimath. This takes place amongst great local and traditional singing and dancing among loud music played by the locals. The same procession, with equal enthusiasm, takes place when the doors of Badrinath Dham are shut down for the season.

Badrinath Temple History and Legend

The Badrinath Dham temple is the main attraction of the town and according to legends and written text sources, Adi Shankara had discovered a stone image of Lord Badri which was made of Shaligram stone in the Alaknanda River bed. He had kept the image of the lord in a small cave near Tapt Kund initially but later on, during the 16th century, the king of Garhwal had shifted it to its current location in the temple of Badrinath. The temple in itself looks like a work of art and architectural brilliance at its prime. The facade is decorated with intricate designs, carvings, arched windows, and a gold gilt roof.

When it comes to legends related to Badrinath, mostly people rely on the ancient Hindu texts of the Bhagwat Puran. Badrinath was known as Badrika ashram in these scriptures and it is defined as the place where the Nar and Narayan incarnation of Lord Vishnu meditates in complete peace for the overall welfare and to guarantee the wellbeing of all the living entities.

Another interesting legend mentions Badrinath during the Mahabharat era. A cave near Mana village (the last village on the Indo-Tibetan border) known as Pandava Gufa is believed to be the place where the Pandava brothers accompanied by Draupadi had stayed for a while before heading on their way to look for Lord Shiva.

Cultural Activities in Badrinath

Badrinath has many options for a curious soul. Here are some cultural activities in Badrinath to indulge yourself in some great memorable times.

Hike up to the Charan Paduka location near Badrinath Temple. The footprint housed in a small temple there is believed to be that of Lord Vishnu himself and the simple 3 km hike is deeply rejuvenating. This is also believed to be the first footprint of Lord Vishnu when he had descended down to earth.

Take a dip and cleanse your soul and wash away your tiredness by taking a dip in the holy natural hot water pond of Tapt Kund which is located very close to the main temple of Badrinath. The Kund is said to hold water containing medicinal properties.

Walk on the path of the strongest Pandava, Bheem. The Bheem Pul is a natural bridge formation that is said to have been built by Bheem for Draupadi to cross the gushing river underneath easily. Other than the historical richness, the gushing Saraswati River under the bridge makes it’s a sight to behold.

Vyas Gufa is a must during your trip to Badrinath. This sacred site near Mana Village is said to be the place where Maharishi Ved Vyas had documented Mahabharata with the help of Lord Ganesh. Many other Puranas and sutras were also composed by Maharishi Ved Vyas in this very cave.

The culture of Badrinath is colorful, dynamic, well preserved, and deeply rooted in their rich ancient past. A visit there will be a soul-stirring experience and will open the door to a whole new world of culture in India.

There is one detail most Badrinath pilgrims notice before they do anything else: the Badrinath weather changes its mind on the highway. The Rishikesh–Haridwar–Devprayag–Joshimath corridor is where most yatras start, get delayed, or face weather-related disruptions.

Drive into a clear sky at Rishikesh (290 m) at 6 am and you can encounter heavy rainfall or storm-like conditions at Karnaprayag (700 m) by 10 am. Reach Joshimath (1,890 m) by lunch under bright sun. Hit Badrinath (3,300 m) under a cold drizzle. That kind of swing is normal here.

The temple opened for pilgrims on 23 April 2026 on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. The shrine will close for winter on Bhai Dooj – expected around 13 November 2026. The final closing date is announced by the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee and published on the official portal.

This guide is based on historical weather data, district advisories, and observations gathered across multiple yatra seasons. It focuses on the route, the monsoon, and the small weather decisions that decide whether you get darshan or wait at a dhaba.

The best time for Badrinath Yatra is May to June and mid-September to October. Day temperature at the shrine stays between 12°C and 25°C. The monsoon window (July to mid-September) sees heavy rain and landslides on the Rishikesh highway – build buffer days into your itinerary.

Why Badrinath Weather Is a Highway Problem, Not a Temple Problem

Unlike most hill shrines, Badrinath Dham sits right on a national highway. You can reach it by car, bus, or shared taxi. The Alaknanda runs behind the temple, the Narayan Dhar peaks rise behind it, and the only way in and out is one corridor.

That corridor is where weather drama plays out. The 300-km drive from Rishikesh crosses five major confluences (Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Devprayag), four landslide-prone zones, and one of India’s most weather-sensitive mountain highways.

Three weather realities every pilgrim should know:

Monsoon landslides cluster between Lambagad and Vishnuprayag. This 40-km stretch sees the longest traffic halts every year, sometimes 12–36 hours during peak rain.

Joshimath has reported land subsidence since 2023. Heavy rain makes conditions worse. Stay only in approved and operational hotel zones recommended by local authorities.

The Alaknanda swells fast. Water levels in the river can rise rapidly during intense upstream rainfall events, even when the sky over the temple is clear.

Best Time to Visit Badrinath

Peak Chardham Season: May to June

The full Chardham circuit is alive. Yamunotri opens first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, then Badrinath. Badrinath temperature in this window is the year’s most stable:

Day at the shrine: 14°C to 22°C in May, climbing to 25°C by mid-June

Night at the shrine: 4°C to 13°C

Joshimath day: 18°C to 28°C – comfortable base camp weather

Rain: Mostly dry in May. Pre-monsoon showers start in the last week of June.

June 10–20 is the absolute peak. Crowd, traffic, and darshan queues all hit their highest. Plan either side of this window for a calmer experience.

Second Window: Mid-September to October

The monsoon withdraws by mid-September. The skies over the Garhwal range turn postcard-clear. This is the window experienced Chardham operators quietly recommend to families who want a quieter darshan.

Badrinath weather in September: Day 12°C to 20°C, night 5°C to 10°C. Monsoon gone. Rivers calm.

Badrinath weather in October: Day 10°C to 18°C, night 0°C to 6°C. Cold sets in fast after sunset. First high-altitude snow on Mana Pass.

Shoulder Months: April and Early November

April: Temple is just opening. The highway is being patched. Day 5°C to 14°C. Suitable for fit travellers who want the first darshan before the rush.

Early November: Closing window. Day 6°C to 14°C. Cold snaps can close the highway overnight. Plan return with at least one buffer day.

Monsoon Window: July to Mid-September

The temple stays open, but highway conditions are unpredictable. District administrations issue daily bulletins. If you must travel, expect:

One full day lost to road block, on average

2–3 night halts at Srinagar (UK), Rudraprayag, or Karnaprayag during peak rain spells

Helicopter services paused in thunderstorms

Off-Season: November to April

Temple closed. The idol is shifted to Pandukeshwar (about 25 km downhill). Badrinath town sees 8–15 feet of snow accumulation. Temperatures touch -15°C. Not accessible for regular pilgrims. Auli ski resort (16 km from Joshimath) is the alternative winter pick.

Badrinath Weather by Month – Temperature Table

The Monsoon Story: Why Badrinath Weather Gets Tricky in July–August

The Chardham region sits on the windward side of the Pir Panjal and Greater Himalayan ranges. When the southwest monsoon pushes moisture up the Alaknanda valley, four things happen in sequence:

Cloud build-up over the Rishikesh–Haridwar belt by mid-morning. Light showers first.

Heavy bursts at Karnaprayag and Rudraprayag by afternoon. The two river confluences act as natural rain concentrators.

Landslide activity at Lambagad, Vishnuprayag, and Chamoli by evening. Most highway halts happen here.

Flood risk at the Badrinath approach. The Alaknanda can rise sharply in an hour during intense upstream rainfall.

One mistake many pilgrims make: assuming a clear sky at Haridwar means a clear sky at Badrinath. They are 10–12 hours apart, with five different weather zones in between. Always check the Chamoli district weather forecast, not the Rishikesh one.

Tapt Kund: The Hot Spring Next to the Temple

Right behind the temple complex sits a natural sulfur hot spring – Tapt Kund. Its water temperature stays around 42°C to 48°C through the year, even when the air outside is at 4°C. Pilgrims take a holy dip here before darshan.

What the weather does to Tapt Kund:

Winter (closed): The kund still runs, but the path is snowed in and the area is closed.

May to June: Pleasant outdoor bath. Air 16°C to 22°C, water 42°C+. Comfortable.

July to August: The kund runs faster after heavy rain. Intense upstream rainfall can flood the bathing area. Sometimes the kund is temporarily closed by the temple committee.

October: Cold air + hot water = strong sulfur steam. Magical in the morning.

Joshimath vs Badrinath – The Altitude Jump Most Pilgrims Underestimate

Most pilgrims do not realise the climb they sign up for. From Rishikesh (290 m) to Badrinath (3,300 m), the gain is over 3,000 metres in one day. From Joshimath to Badrinath alone, it is 1,400 metres – a serious altitude profile.

Pro tip: Many pilgrims try to cover Rishikesh → Badrinath → Rishikesh in two days. The body almost never agrees. Add a Joshimath night on the way up.

Best Month to Visit Badrinath – By Traveller Type

Families with Kids

Best month: May or late September. Roads are open, weather is mild, and crowds are manageable. Avoid June peak rush and August monsoon. Carry child-specific medication and extra woollens. Joshimath has higher oxygen than the shrine – acclimatise there first.

Senior Citizens

Best month: May or September. Avoid the monsoon completely. Two-night Joshimath stay (one on the way up, one on the way down). Travel with an operator offering palki and pony at the shrine. Carry prescribed medication.

NRI Families on a Short Trip

Best month: Late May or first week of October. Coincides with summer holidays (May) and Diwali break (October). Helicopter darshan available. Plan 5 nights: Haridwar (1), Joshimath (2), Badrinath (1), Rishikesh (1).

Photography Lovers

Best month: October. Clear skies, golden light, snow on Nanda Devi peak, low dust. Sunrise at Badrinath around 5:15 am in October. Tapt Kund steam at dawn is a signature shot.

What to Pack for Badrinath Weather

Badrinath is a road-and-temple destination. You do not need trekking gear, but layering is essential because the shrine altitude is real.

Common Mistakes Pilgrims Make on the Badrinath Highway

Trying to cover Delhi → Badrinath → Delhi in three days. The body cannot acclimatise that fast. AMS cases spike when people rush the climb.

Checking only Rishikesh weather before leaving. The weather at Karnaprayag and Joshimath is what will decide your darshan. Always check the Chamoli district forecast.

Treating monsoon like a normal road trip. Landslides do not announce themselves. Build buffer days into your itinerary and stay flexible on return dates.

Booking hotels in old Joshimath without checking subsidence zones. Choose stays in the upper Auli road or Singhdhar area. Avoid zones with visible structural damage.

Skipping the Tapt Kund dip due to cold air. The water is 45°C year-round. The dip itself is bearable even in October.

Skipping meals on the highway. The long drive suppresses appetite. Eat at Srinagar (UK) or Karnaprayag.

Real Weather Decisions Pilgrims Ask About

What if the highway closes mid-yatra?

It happens. BRO and district PWD usually clear small disruptions within hours. Major landslides during peak monsoon can take longer, depending on the size and weather conditions. Keep 2 buffer days and stay close to your yatra coordinator for live updates.

What if my helicopter darshan gets cancelled?

Helicopter services pause in thunderstorms, fog, or wind above 35 km/h. The operator usually rebooks for the next available slot. If flying from Sahastradhara (Dehradun) or Agastyamuni (Rudraprayag), keep a backup day in Haridwar or Rishikesh.

What if my senior parents struggle at altitude?

Palki service is available at the shrine from the road head. Four bearers take about 20 minutes uphill. Pre-book through your yatra operator. Pony is the cheaper alternative.

FAQs

1. When did Badrinath Temple open in 2026?

The temple opened on 23 April 2026 on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. It will remain accessible to pilgrims until the Bhai Dooj closing ceremony, expected around 13 November 2026.

2. What is Badrinath temperature today?

For today’s Badrinath temperature, check the IMD Dehradun bulletin or the Chamoli district advisory. At peak season, day temperatures range 14°C to 25°C and nights drop to 4°C to 13°C.

3. What is Badrinath weather in May?

Day 14°C to 22°C at the shrine. Night 4°C to 10°C. Joshimath day 18°C to 28°C. Pleasant and dry – the start of the peak Chardham rush.

4. What is Badrinath weather in June?

Day 16°C to 25°C – the warmest month. Night 8°C to 13°C. Crowd peaks in the second week of June. Pre-monsoon showers begin in the last week.

5. What is Badrinath weather in September?

Monsoon withdraws by mid-September. Day 12°C to 20°C, night 5°C to 10°C. Clear skies, smaller crowd – often the most comfortable window.

6. What is Badrinath weather in October?

Day 10°C to 18°C, night 0°C to 6°C. Crisp autumn. First snow possible at higher altitudes by late October. Photography is at its best.

7. Is Badrinath cold in summer?

Summers at Badrinath are mild. Day temperatures reach 25°C in June, but nights always drop to single digits (8°C to 13°C). Woollens are essential after sunset, even in peak summer.

8. Does it snow in Badrinath?

Badrinath snowfall is heavy from December to March. During the yatra season, light snow at higher altitudes (Mana, Vasudhara) is possible in late October and April. The temple town itself rarely sees snow between May and October.

9. What is the best month to visit Badrinath Temple?

Best month to visit Badrinath Temple is either May (start of the season) or late September to early October (post-monsoon clarity). June is the peak but the most crowded.

10. Is Badrinath safe in monsoon?

The temple stays open, but the highway sees heavy rain and landslides. Late July to mid-August is the highest-risk window. Travel with an operator who monitors road status daily. Build buffer days into your itinerary.

11. What is the temperature of Tapt Kund?

Tapt Kund water stays around 42°C to 48°C year-round. The hot sulfur spring runs even in winter when the temple is closed.

12. How cold is Badrinath at night?

In peak season (May–June), nights drop to 4°C to 13°C. In September–October, nights fall to 0°C to 6°C. A down jacket is essential after 7 pm.

13. Can senior citizens do Badrinath Yatra?

Yes, with preparation. Stay two nights in Joshimath. Travel with an operator offering palki at the shrine. Avoid the monsoon. Carry prescribed medication and check with your doctor 30 days before.

14. Can children travel to Badrinath?

Children above 5–6 years usually manage the trip with proper layering and slow pacing. Below 5, altitude can be harsh. Avoid monsoon for kids. The Tapt Kund dip is too hot for very young children.

15. What is the altitude of Badrinath?

The shrine is at 3,300 m (10,827 ft). Joshimath is at 1,890 m. Most pilgrims add a Joshimath night for acclimatisation before the final climb.

16. Which month has the least crowd in Badrinath?

Late September to early October – clear weather, comfortable temperature, crowd is half of June. April (just after opening) is the second-quietest window.

17. What if the Rishikesh highway closes?

Small disruptions clear within hours. Major landslides during peak monsoon can take longer, depending on weather conditions. Most yatra operators reroute via Chamoli or hold pilgrims at safe halts.

18. How long is the drive from Rishikesh to Badrinath?

About 300 km. Normal drive time is 10–12 hours with one halt at Srinagar (UK) or Rudraprayag. In monsoon, the same drive can take 14–18 hours due to traffic halts.

Location and Accessibility

Badrinath is a Nagar Panchayat and holy Hindu town in Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, India. It is situated at an elevation of around 11,204 feet (3,415 metres), between Nar-Narayana Hills in the shadow of Neelkanth Peak. This sacred pilgrimage site sits on the banks of the Alaknanda River.

Badrinath is well connected to Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Joshimath, Kotdwar, and other hill towns of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. Due to its mountainous and remote setting, visiting Badrinath requires awareness of all available travel options and thoughtful advance planning.

How to Reach Badrinath

By Road

Road travel remains the most common and practical way to reach Badrinath. The route from Delhi/Rishikesh follows the highway through the Garhwal Himalayas, passing through some of the most scenic gorges and valleys in India.

Main road route:

Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar (Garhwal) → Rudraprayag → Gauchar → Nandprayag → Gopeshwar → Pipalkoti → Joshimath → Badrinath

Note on highway number: This route was historically called NH 58. It has since been redesignated as NH 7 under the new national highway numbering system, though locals and signboards in the region still commonly refer to it as NH 58.

Joshimath (45 km before Badrinath) is a key overnight stop for many pilgrims. It has better hotel options, ATMs, medical facilities, and connectivity compared to Badrinath town itself. Consider planning a night halt here.

Keep 1–2 buffer days in your schedule for possible weather delays or road blocks

Stay updated on government advisories regarding road conditions, daily vehicle limits, and weather forecasts before travelling

Badrinath Dham historical significance can be dated back to the 7th or 8th century during the time of Adi Shankaracharya who is said to be the creator and the person behind the establishment of Badrinath Dham. After re-establishing the temple shrine he also set up his own people there to make the temple in a working condition where the priests of the temple are Nambudiris. He did so in an attempt to revive the apparently dying Hindu beliefs and traditions.

During the 8th century Adi Shankara along with the help of the king of Garhwal got rid of all the Buddhist population here and re-established the monastery as temple shrine for pilgrimage purposes. By the 16th century the idol of Lord Badri was moved from its initial position near the Tapt Kund to the current temple by the king of Garhwal.

Related Legends

The legend of Badrinath goes back to the time when the gods used to walk the earth. Once due to some reasons Lord Badri was sitting in a peaceful meditation and was completely unaware of the surrounding harsh weather conditions. In order to save his beloved his consort goddess Lakshmi decided to turn herself into a jujube or Badri tree and provide protection from the worsening weather conditions. Pleased with his consort’s devotion Lord Vishnu named the entire region after her, and to mark this, the entire region was initially covered entirely in jujube or Badri trees. The statue of Lord Badri inside the temple shrine is in the form of a sitting position.

Another legend which is mentioned in the holy book of Vishnu Puran narrates about how Badrinath originated. As per the ancient accounts the two Lords Nar and Narayan, were looking for an ideal place to perform their penance and spread the word of religion. They finally came across the ideal destination of Badrinath and decided to set up their hermitage there after establishing the Panch Badri sites.

Literary Mentions

This holy pilgrimage temple’s mention can be found in various holy Hindu books of Bhagwat Puran, Skanda Purana and Mahabharata. As per the Bhagwat Puran – in Badrika Ashram, Lord Vishnu has been undergoing a great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all the living beings. According to Skanda Purana – there are several sacred shrines in heaven, earth and hell, but there is no shrine like Badrinath. The other areas surrounding Badrinath Dham has also found its mention in various ancient holy Hindu books like Padma Puran, where Badrinath is mentioned as the one of the spiritual treasures.

Source of River Alaknanda

Lining the holy temple of Badrinath is the river of Alaknanda whose origin point can be traced back Satopanth Glacier and the Bhagirathi Kharak Glacier. The holy river of Alaknanda is 1 out of the 2 head streams of the holy river of Ganga with an overall length of Alaknanda being 190 kms where it is said to cover a basin area of whopping 10,882 sq. km. Alaknanda river goes on to merge with Mandakini river to form the holy river of Ganga. As per mythology goddess Ganga had descended from the heaven to earth at The Dham of Gangotri. While descending from heaven the river of Alaknanda had split from the celestial Ganga. The river gushes down in full force and marks the region surrounding it to be extremely sacred and pious.

The Significance of Badrinath Dham in Hinduism

Due to its ancient relevance and having found its mention in various holy Hindu scriptures, Badrinath Dham is considered to be extremely important and one of the most significant pilgrimage destination for every avid Vaishnavite. It is believed that ever since the conception of humans and from even before that Lord Vishnu is said to have been living inside the shrine of Badrinath and performing deep penance and will also continue to do so till time immemorium. This Char Dham site is incredibly important for every devout Hindu and should definitely be visited at least once in lifetime to experience its unparalleled and deep spirituality.

Referred to as Lord Vishnu’s abode on Earth, Badrinath Dham is a crucial part of not only the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand but also that of the all-India Chardham Yatra. Along with this, Badrinath or Badri Vishal is also one of the most significant Divya Desams out of the other 108 that are located all over India. The temple is incredibly vibrant looking and attracts the largest number of devotees from all over the world. Surrounded by stunning sites of the snow-clad Himalayan mountain peaks and the lush green rolling hills of the Garhwal Mountains, you will be drenched in deep devotion for Lord Vishnu.

Location

Perched on an elevation of 3,133 meters above sea level, the temple is situated in the Garhwal Himalayan region in the Chamoli district right against the beautiful backdrop of the overlooking Nand Narayan Parvat. People will also be able to experience the Himalayan beauty of the Neelkanth peak, which spreads across the whole region and radiates its peaceful aura. This has to be one of the most easily reachable temples in the Char Dham Yatra circuit, where the pilgrims are required to walk only a few meters to reach the main temple entrance. Located right next to the holy river of Mandakini, Badri Vishal used to be covered in thick forests of Jujube trees (hence the name), which have now become obsolete.

What to Expect

The temple of Badrinath is extremely vibrant looking and decorated with fine and colourful details all over. There are stone facades and arched windows that add to the beauty of the temple, complete with a conical-shaped roof, which is made out of gold gilt. A broad stairway leads the pilgrims up to the main entrance of the temple through the tall and extremely charming-looking arched gateway. Present inside the temple is a Mandap along with a large pillared hall which leads to the inner sanctum where a 1 metre tall statue of Lord Vishnu stands, which is believed to have manifested itself on its own over there.

Best Time to Visit

Just like all the other Char Dham sites of Uttarakhand, Badrinath Dham should also be visited during the summer months of April to June, when the weather is pleasant and the climate is comfortably warm during the daytime. The temperature during this time stays between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. By night, no matter what time you choose to make the journey, it will be extremely cold, so be prepared for that. Avoid traveling on the hills during the monsoon season when the whole place is prone to unexpected landslides.

Opening and Closing Dates

Opening Dates: The doors for Badrinath Dham are scheduled to open during the holy eve of Akshay Tritiya, which will take place on 4 May 2025. The idol of the presiding deity of Lord Vishnu will be brought in from his winter home in Joshimath after a grand procession.

Closing Dates: The gates of Badrinath Dham shut down every year for the harsh winter months on the holy occasion of Vijayadashami on 23 October 2025. After the closing of the temple and after the idol of Lord Vishnu is taken away to his winter home in Joshimath, the temple remains closed for the pilgrims for 6 months.

Temple Timings

The main Kapat of Badrinath Dham temple opens up as early as 4:30 am and closes at 1:00 pm for lunch and other maintenance services. It opens up once again at 4:00 pm and finally closes down for the night at 9:00 pm after the conclusion of the song Geet Govind.

Puja Rituals and Sevas

Several Aarti and puja services take place in Badrinath Dham, and some of them are – Maha Abhishek, Abhishek, Gita Path, Bhagwat Path and the evening puja rituals include Geet Govind and Aarti. All the daily puja rituals and Aarti are said to have been prescribed by Adi Shankaracharya himself. Unlike most of the Hindu temples in India, all the puja rituals and procedures, even the decoration of the idols, are done in the presence of all the devotees.

Festivals Celebrated

Janmashtami – Generally taking place between August to September, this festival is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Since this festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna (the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu), the procession here is done in a grand manner, which is attended by a huge throng of pilgrims from across India.

Mata Murti Ka Mela – celebrated during September, this festival is celebrated to pay honour and reverence to the holy mother of Lord Badrinath, and it also marks the descent of the holy river of Ganga from its heavenly abode to the earthly realm. Among various holy rituals and activities here during the Mela, Vedic scripture renditions of Ashtotram and Sahasranama are done.
