Rajasthan is the land of heritage, history, and culture represented through its impeccable palaces, magnificent forts, and delicious food. It is every traveler’s dream to go for a backpacking tour of Rajasthan across the desert land, riding a camel, staying in tents at moonlit deserts, and indulging in various cultural activities. However, all this majestic vibe will be not memorable if you don’t plan your holiday in a proper manner. Although a wonderful holiday destination of India one must follow some important travel tips in order to truly feel the vibe of this place and not make it an overwhelming experience rather a joyful one.

Here are some important travel tips for you to follow in order to make your trip a memorable one:

Choose The Right Time To Go – Rajasthan experiences extreme climatic conditions since it is the land of desert. Make sure not to make travel plans during the summer months of May to July. These are the months when sightseeing will be impossible due to the scorching heat as a result of which you will remain bound in your hotel room wasting your vacation days away. The best time to explore would be during the months of August to April i.e. autumn, winter, and spring season. It makes for an ideal winter vacation holiday destination.

Plan Out Itinerary Accordingly – The state of Rajasthan is the largest state of India and exploring every popular tourist destination here is not entirely possible and economical if you have a limited number of vacation days. Be really sure of what kind of sightseeing you wish to see and plan your itinerary out according to that. You can choose to check out a couple of places in one go and the remainder of the places for a visit later on in life. It is vital for you to plan your trip to Rajasthan keeping this factor in mind and avoid disappointment.

Wear Comfortable Clothing – Investing in comfortable clothing and footwear is one of the most important things to keep in mind and gets regularly overlooked by travelers. Make sure to wear cotton clothing attire and a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers since you will be walking a lot no matter where you go. Being a big state exploring it may take a lot of your time and energy so make sure to be at your comfortable best while doing so. This travel tip is not just limited to traveling in Rajasthan but is also recommended for traveling anywhere else.

Indulge In Cultural Experience – There is so much more to Rajasthan than just palaces, forts, and the royalty. For a wholesome and proper holiday experience, you should indulge in various cultural activities that are found in large numbers here. This will not only give you an insight into the deeply rooted culture of the city but will also make your holiday extremely memorable. Try out the local delicacies, visit Chokhi Dhani, explore Bagore Ki Haveli in Udaipur, and take village tours and more to truly grasp the gist of this wonderful place!

Frequently Asked Questions:

If you are planning a visit to Rajasthan or if you wish to experience the best of this incredibly promising state then here are some popular frequently asked questions that we have answered with the utmost care and knowledge:

Q1.What Is The Most Economical Way Of Travelling To Rajasthan?

Ans. If you have a private car or vehicle then you will be able to cover a number of places as compared to if you are relying on other modes of transportation. Mostly people from Delhi, Punjab, and Chandigarh, Haryana, or others make it a point to visit Rajasthan by car as a part of their extended holiday weekend. The car also enables you to go anywhere you like without any extra / hyped payment in case of cabs or taxis.

Q2. How Many Days Are Required To Explore Rajasthan?

Ans. Being a massive state with numerous activities and sightseeing options one will get very confused as to where to go or what to explore. However, if you wish to get the best and the most authentic Rajasthani experience then you can visit places like Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur. You can choose to spend 2 nights in each of these places making the whole itinerary for a minimum of 10 days.

Q3. How Can I Get From One Place To Another Within Rajasthan?

Ans. Being one of the most famous tourist destinations in India, tourists have a lot of convenient options to get from one place to another. Some options include Tuk-Tuk, Auto-rickshaws, local buses, Uber, etc. in case you are traveling via a tour package then you will be provided with a private vehicle to travel around. You may even rent a car from here which will be a little expensive but totally worth it and very convenient.

Q4. What Kind Of Accommodation Should I Expect In Rajasthan?

Ans. Being a famous tourist hotspot in India this place has numerous accommodation and stay options from which one can choose depending on your budget. You can choose from luxury resorts, stay in palace turned hotels, small Havelis or from cheap lodges, traditional homestays (which are increasingly becoming popular) and of course the hostels which are a relatively new but a thriving concept. Accommodation and lodging in Rajasthan will be least of your concerns.

Q5. What Are Some Shopping Options In Rajasthan?

Ans. This is one place in India where you will have all the options to shop till you drop? From handicrafts, shoes, chunky ethnic jewelry, Dupattas, Artefacts, and more. The best part is that you should not go looking around for shops as there are numerous colorful and vibrant market places everywhere. however, here are some shopping places that have set the bar really high in case of shopping – Johari / Bapu Bazaar in Jaipur, Clock Tower / Nayi Sarak Market Place in Jodhpur, Sadar Bazaar In Jaisalmer, Bada Bazaar in Udaipur and the list goes on and on. Remember to bargain and haggle to at least 40% of the said price as most of them are big-time rip-offs.

We all know Rajasthan for its unmatched opulence which is displayed through its marvelous palaces and forts. This place offers everything to make you feel like one of the royalties. Apart from the obvious display of rich heritage and well-preserved age-old culture the clothing style and attire of the Rajasthani folks are appreciated all over the world. Marked by bright bold colors and light fabric the men and women traditional clothing here is very quirky to look at while simultaneously being functional even during the harshest summer months.

Here are the traditional Rajasthani men and women clothing attire

Traditional Men Attire:

Angrakha – This is one of the most common pieces of traditional men clothing that in other words can also be called a kurta. The literal meaning of Angrakha is protecting the body which is an apt name for this upper body garment. This clothing is tied all around with the help of laces and not buttons. The fabric utilized for its production is cotton since it is the lightest and the most breathable piece of fabric which keeps the body safe and cool. An Angrakha can be seen designed in 2 ways; one of them being a frock-like design called Kamari Angrakha and the other one being the knee-length Angrakha that are more commonly worn by the locals here. During special occasions and festivals, men wear multicolored and designer Angrakhas as well.

Dhoti / Pyjama – Rajasthani men wear a dhoti or a Payjama which is like a track pant made out of cotton material. They wear it on a daily basis since it suits their living conditions. These pieces of lower clothing are often paired with a loose long shirt called mufti or a Kurta or the Angrakha mentioned above. Rajasthani men can also be seen wearing dhoti especially in the more remote villages and regions of this state. A Payjama is not necessarily long till the ankle, men take the liberty of altering its length according to their liking.

Pagri / Turban – A traditional folk attire of a Rajasthani man is incomplete without a turban or a Pagri and can be seen on men from the moment you enter this place. This piece of headgear accessory is made by wrapping a .2 meter long piece of cloth that is available in a variety of styles, designs, colors, and patterns. This is a sign of honor and a mark of being closely attached to their heritage. People belonging to different communities and tribes mark their ethnicity by wearing different colored or patterned Pagri. During some special occasion like weddings or festivals men wear safas instead of Pagris which are shorter yet a lot broader in size as compared to a regular Pagri.

Traditional Women Attire:

Ghagra – This is one of the most iconic and landmark pieces of traditional women clothing in Rajasthan which consists of a colorful long skirt with a narrow waistline and a broad base that pans out till the bottom. It does not touch the ankle but stops just above it in order to make the footwear and foot ornaments visible. There is no limit to the type, style, design, pattern, and range of colors one can find in Ghagras. The skirt is made out of several pleats along with being studded with a number of different types of ornaments to adorn the whole look. Just like the rest of Rajasthan the primary and the most economical material for its creation is the cotton fabric. Women pair it up with a short Kurta or a blouse called Cholis which are also mainly made out of cotton.

Choli – A traditional choli worn by a Rajasthani woman is mainly and majorly made out of cotton fabric and worn in their daily life. During special events and festivals, women can be seen wearing Cholis made out of silk material that adds on to the fashionable value. The reach of the length of the Choli depends on various factors of the woman wearing it like caste, religion and the age which makes it kind of like a representation of their personal life and beliefs.

Odhni – Just like a Pagri is to a man in Rajasthan the main accessory without which the attire is considered to be incomplete is an Odhni or a Dupatta in the rest of India. The style of wearing this Odhni involves tucking the one end of the dupatta inside the long skirt near the waist and draping the other end of the Odhni over your head or shoulders. This is a 2.5 – 3-metre long piece of printed cloth available in different designs and colors as per the liking of the women. The type of Odhni worn by each woman depends on her religion and caste so one can differentiate their religion from the other depending on the type of Odhni they are wearing. it is mandatory for women of Rajasthan to cover their faces with their Odhni in the form of a veil as a way of showing respect to the elders of the family.

Jewelry – The state of Rajasthan is extremely famous for the different types and styles of jewelry that is found and created here. The taste and style of traditional and ethnic Rajasthani jewelry is extremely specific and unique consisting of semi-precious and precious stone studded trinkets. In case of jewelry, men can also be seen wearing neckpieces or ear studs. A rich Rajasthani local can be seen wearing pearl or a gold chain while the common people generally wear silver Hansli or a big round bracelet and is worn around the neck. Women also wear big chunky Jhumkas, multicolored bangles, anklets, rings, nose rings, and much more. The design inspiration for this jewelry can be seen has been taken from the natural elements like sun, moon, flowers and leaves. it is said that every one of these designs hold some deep-rooted and spiritual meaning behind it.

The food prepared here shows heavy influences from its bygone past that has been kept alive through these delicacies. Primarily 70% of Rajasthan is vegetarian and uses locally grown vegetables and other things like beans, lentils, corn, barley, etc. however, non-vegetarian items and various meats are also present. Here are some of the most famous vegetarian and non-vegetarian traditional food of Rajasthan:

It tastes the best if dipped in pure Desi ghee.

Where to Eat – Chokhi Dhaani, Thaali & more, Lakshmi Mishthaan Bhandar, Virasat Restaurant.

Gatte Ki Sabzi: This delicious gram flour or besan delicacy is the authentic Rajasthani cuisine which truly represents the rich culture and heritage of this wonderful land. The curry is prepared by combining various locally prepared spices and curd that provides it its typical sour and spicy taste. The small balls of gram flour are dropped into the curry which adds a lot of texture to the cuisines. This lip-smacking dish is mostly served hot along with Chapati or steamed rice.

Where to Eat – Krishna Dal Bati Restro, Natraj Dining Hall And Restaurant, and Traditional Khana.

Rajasthani Kadhi: We all know this humble Kadhi Dish is one of the top favourite dishes for the people of north India. It is especially a staple in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttarakhand of course Rajasthan. But everywhere the Kadhi is prepared differently keeping their real flavors of the place intact.
The rich past of this wondrous land is very well preserved and dotted with numerous elaborate and opulent forts and palaces which acts like a time machine and takes you back to the golden era. The diverse range of inhabitants here who continue to call this land their home have managed to paint a very colorful picture of the incredible collection of heritage and beliefs. Here is everything you need to know about the wonderful culture of Rajasthan:

Origin of Rajasthan

The history of Rajasthan can be traced back to as old as the origin of Indus valley and Harappan civilization which adds an immense amount of value to its current cultural relevance. The regions of Rewari, Brahmavatra, and Mehrangarh showcase the very first traces f human settlements in India and dates back to around 5,000 years ago. Several archaeological excavations and evidences make it further clearer that this wonderful state has always served as a home to several different types of tribes and sub-tribes ever since time immemorial. Every tribe has their own set of beliefs and traditions which thrive in harmony and some of these dominant tribes include the bhils, the minas, the lohars, and the Sahariyas among others. However, these regions were eventually and gradually conquered and ruled over by different clans like Arjunyas and Kushans among others with the Rajputana clan being the most powerful establishment in Rajasthan. On this day, Rajasthan displays a kaleidoscopic representation of various different types of these tribes and ethnicities making the whole experience totally worth it.

Culture of Rajasthan

Did you know that 70% of the population in Rajasthan is vegetarian making it one of the most largely vegetarian states in India? People from across the globe make their way to this incredible state to experience the real Indian culture which is truly one of a kind owing to its vast diversity of residents. Primarily the local people of Rajasthan live in a traditional manner and are very deeply connected to their roots. Staying in the desert is all about maintaining a traditional way of life. From food, cuisines, and arts to the costumes and even fairs and unique festivals every aspect of this desert state is well knitted in the deep cultural aspect.

However with time, Rajasthan has also developed into one of the most grand and modern states of India along with the rest of the world. But all this has happened keeping in touch with their age-old and well-preserved culture and heritage. Along with various modern developments which is necessary the tourism sector of Rajasthan has also substantially developed and grown over time keeping in mind the fact that people come here to mainly experience the real colors of the culture and traditions of India.

Traditional Clothing of Rajasthani Folks

The main style of clothing in Rajasthan involves colorful clothing with mirror works and patterns. The women mainly dawn odhni or a dupatta which can be found everywhere in India and is worn as a mark of respect. Be it men or women the Rajasthani folks make it a point to wear colorful clothing attire. Men can be generally seen wearing a Pagdi or a headgear which is made out of cloth and is not only a significant clothing accessory among men and looks like a turban that also works in keeping them safe from the scorching desert heat. Cotton dhotis with lightly colored kurtas are also worn by men who also sometimes wear a Pyjama with it. The traditional clothing for women includes saris, ghagras or Long skirts which are mainly decorated with block printing or hand-decorated. They pair it up with a colorful and matching Choli or a blouse and as an accessory, they wear anklets, chunky bangles, necklaces, and nose rings all made out of locally occurring metals especially silver.

Folk Dance and Music of Rajasthan

Keeping in mind the fact that this state has been ruled over by numerous different tribes and rulers it has managed to create some of the most unique dance, musical and art forms that can be observed even today. However, the tribes residing within the state boundary has created a wonderful amalgamation of a variety of art forms. The folk music of Rajasthan finds its roots in the manganiyars and langas especially in the sphere of Rajasthani folk music. They are credited with performing various songs and ragas which cater to different types of purposes and feelings. The traditional instruments involved in the creation of this traditional music include Sarangi, Kamayach, Dhols, Shehnai, been and more. Every one of these instruments is traditional Rajasthani folk instruments. Some of the famous dance forms include Ghoomer, Bhopa, Tejaji, Kathipudi, etc. out of all this Ghoomer dance which originated in Udaipur has gained international appreciation and recognition.

Rajasthan is one of the most colorful, vibrant and a state which is deeply rooted in its dynamic past. This northern state of India has served as home to a number of different princely states and rulers which can clearly be experienced through its architectural style design and well-preserved culture and traditions. Currently, Rajasthan is home to a number of groups, tribes, and sub-tribes along with being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. But what was Rajasthan before it became what it is today? Read on to find out more about this massively endearing state that will leave you awestruck.

A brief history of Rajasthan tells us that its timeline can be traced successfully back to thousands of years ago when it served as the destination for the development of the Indus valley civilization. By the early medieval era, the region saw a rise of the Mughal Empire which was done successfully by establishing alliances with the Rajput rulers who were already here. The Mughal Rule was ended during the 18th century with the establishment of the rule by the British Empire. This was also done by creating alliances with the princely states here which was later on integrated with the rest of India by independence.

Ancient History

According to various sources and archaeological findings in Bundi and Bhilwara the original history of Rajasthan can be dated back to 5,000 to 2,00,000 years ago. The ancient civilized history can also be traced back to the regions of Sikar and Jhunjhunu along with a couple of regions that falls under the district of Jaipur and the state of Haryana. Different parts of Rajasthan has been recognized as the location for where Indus valley civilization is said to have developed along with the excavations found in Kalibanga in the northern Rajasthan region.

Medieval History

Later on with the development of societies the Gurjar and Pratihara Empire ruled Rajasthan and kept it safe from the Arab invaders during the 8th and 11th century. This was one of the most successful accomplishments achieved by this empire. It was this empire’s army that is credited with barring the intrusion of the Arabs beyond the regions of Sindh. The first battle of tarain fought in 1191 was won by Prithviraj Chauhan against the forces of Muhammad Ghori. However, Chauhan was then defeated in the 2nd battle of tarain a year later in 1192. With this defeat, a chunk of Rajasthan came under the Muslim rule. By the 13th century, Mewar was the most powerful and prominent state of Rajasthan. Although the Rajputs worked hard in keeping the Muslim invaders away from Rajasthan but later on they became subservient to the Delhi sultanate rule. The Ranas of Mewar led successful resistances against the tughlaq dynasty rule and recovered a massive part of Rajasthan. Rana Sanga a powerful Rajasthani ruler is continued with continually defeating the invaders during the time of the expansion of the Lodi Empire. After his death, nobody was powerful or capable enough to defend the expansionist attitude of the Mughal Empire.

Early Modern History

The early modern history of Rajasthan is traced back to the time of the Mughal conquests in Rajasthan. Mughal emperor Akbar during the 16th century expanded his empire into Rajputana by laying siege into the region of Chittor and defeating the king of Mewar in 1568. During this time a siege of Ranthambore also took place which was initially in security. Akbar further expanded his empire by creating marriage alliances with the Rajut rulers and gaining their trust. Akbar himself married the daughter of the Rajasthani ruler i.e. Jodha Bai and maintained good relations with them by offering high positions in his office. However several rulers of Rajasthan like Mewar and Marwar did not accept this supremacy and were at constant conflict with him. During the battle of Haldighati, his army was met with Akbar’s forces where he was badly injured and finally defeated. Mughal influence can be observed in Rajasthan through their paintings and architecture.

British Colonial Period in Rajasthan

With the arrival of the British rule in Rajasthan, it eventually led to the administrative designation of cultural, geographical and economically diverse regions that at one time had never shared a common identity politically. This diversification fell under the name of the Rajputana agency. This agency lasted till 1949 and worked as an identifier till it was renamed as Rajasthan.

As the British rule in Rajasthan established stronger control alliances were formed y their end with the already existing princely states a chiefly entities which were during the 19th century. The local rulers accepted British sovereignty in exchange for local autonomy and Maratha protection. This was done keeping in mind the age-old Mughal traditions that has been followed over the years and also due to its strategic positioning of the region of Ajmer. In the year 1817-1818, the British government concluded all the treaties regarding the alliances with almost all the states of Rajasthan which marked the commencement of British rule in Rajasthan.

Post Independence History

The current state of Rajasthan took shape in 7 different stages. It was in 1948 that different parts of Rajasthan came together as one which were Kota, Pratapgarh, Dungarpur, Kishangarh, Banswara, etc. by 1949 the remainder of the states of Rajasthan agreed together to sign the instrument of accession. The princes of the former royalty were granted a good amount of remuneration constitutionally and various privileges as privy purses which helped them in discharging them from their duty and obligations. In 1970 when Indira Gandhi was serving as the prime minister of India she abolished the privy purses by abolishing them by 1971. The bygone princes used the word Maharaj which had no value and was only seen as a status symbol. Finally, a democratically elected government runs the state with 33 districts, 222 towns, 105 subdivisions, around 38,000 different villages and 241 tehsils.
