What to Buy in Manali

Even before you enter Manali you will be treated to some small shops selling interesting handicrafts items made out of wood, brass or other materials that are commonly found in Manali. These items include small decorative pieces, jewellery boxes, and toys. You can even find local handmade jewellery that is extra special because they cannot be replicated.

These have to be one of the best gifts to give someone or to yourself. Kinnauri and Kullu shawls represent bright colors, beautiful patterns, and a fine blend that ensures that not only these look good on your but also keeps you warm during the biting winters. The texture of these shawls is very soft and warm, lightweight to carry and every tourist visiting Manali should definitely buy these works of art even if it is for the sake of memories. It won’t be difficult at all to find these shawls because there are many local shops and tourist marketplaces selling a variety of these.

Thangkas

Manali has a good number of Buddhist populations. Along with temples, there are many monasteries in Manali and other neighboring places that represent these small communities of people. Thangkas are Tibetan Buddhist paintings which are created on silk or cotton pieces of fabric representing a mandala, Buddhist deity or a regular scene. Mostly Thangkas are kept unframed and rolled up away from sight due to their extreme religious value. These are very delicate pieces of art history which are very well preserved since most of these Thangkas are intended for personal meditation or instructions for monastic regulations for the young lamas-to-be.

Woolen Apparels

Manali has a well-stocked collection of woolen apparels for tourists and the locals as well. Being a hill station, there is no dearth of woolen clothing in the markets of Manali like woolen mufflers, sweaters, jumpers, jackets, ear muffs, woolen socks, gloves, thermal layers, and warm inners. Even if you are unable to predict the intensity of cool temperature there then you won’t have to worry as there are plenty of woolen items on sale to keep you safe from the biting cold. Especially if you go shopping in Manali during the winter season, you will be able to shop for many different woolen winter wear products.

Prayer wheels are easily present in many marketplaces from where you can buy them at a reasonable rate. The metal prayer wheel has to be the most popular one while the rotating one is also sold in large numbers as it is said to invite good fortune in life.

Over time this ancient hill town has seen many ages. From the arrival of the early Sages and philosophers to the influence of the British and the commercialization of Manali, the Manali we see today is a culmination of everything that happened in the past that helped shape and create its present. A visit to Manali is a rite of passage to enter the beautiful and quirky hill town! But hold on! Before you go on to start planning your holiday be sure to check out these travel tips in order to ensure your holiday is memorable.

Best Time to Visit Manali

The Himalayan hill station of Manali is situated at a height of over 3,000 to 4,000 meters above sea level. This means that it goes without saying you should be very careful of the time you plan on exploring Manali. The best and the safest time to visit Manali are during the summer season of March to June. The temperature during this time swings between 10 to 25 degrees Celsius on average. The weather remains pleasant, calm with wide blue open skies and clean air. If you are up for it and if the biting cold is not a problem for you then the winter months of September to February should be the best for you and you could even make the most of the hotel prices and discounts as this is considered to be the offseason for tourism in Manali.

Packing for Manali

Packing for a vacation is a job in itself. But if you pack smartly and does your research right you will not only save space in your luggage but will also be able to travel with ease and comfort. For a fun-filled vacation in Manali be sure to pack for the season. If traveling in wintertime, then pack up things like thermal inners, comfortable Woollen Socks, gloves, beanies, and mufflers along with your jackets, hoodies, and pullovers. For summertime travels in Manali, you still should pack some warm clothing and jackets, especially for nighttime. This is because, in the summertime, the mornings are very warm and pleasant; however, by the sunset, it becomes much colder. No matter what the time of your travel is, you should always be armed with some good quality Woollens.

Save Money by Staying At HPTDC Hotels

This may prove to be one of the best money-saving tips for a vacation in Manali. HPTDC or Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Limited has opened up much heritage and iconic hotels to serve the tourists visiting Manali. The best advantage of staying at HPTDC hotels is that they are located at very good and accessible locations. They offer rooms at fair and affordable prices which also offer food services and even off-season discounts.

Avoid Buying Food at the Mall Road

Manali and Mall road remains synonymous with each other. People will have you believe that your Manali trip remains incomplete without visiting the mall road during your trip. The food available at the cafes and restaurants is highly overpriced and not worth the money at all. You will be wasting money if you happen to eat at any of the restaurants here. Instead, you can eat anywhere outside this part of Manali and get some great deals on delicious food. If you suffer from certain food allergies then you should make sure to avoid eating from cheap dhabas or street vendors. Avoid eating cut-up fruits and replace them with whole fruit since cut-up fruits are prone to accumulating more virus and bacteria.

Book Hotel Smartly

If you want to take the easier route without any hassle then you should book a package for a Kullu Manali trip from some reliable tour operator. Other than that you can book a government-operated accommodation option or some air bnb that may suit your travel needs more. It is best to book your hotel rooms ASAP, especially if you are planning to travel to Manali during the summer months since that is the peak tourism season in Manali and the rooms get booked very quickly. Make sure to call the hotel and ask if they have the amenities they promised like running a hot water facility, heater, and bedding facility, and if they have a restaurant facility for food or not.

Always Keep Emergency Contact with You

It never hurts to keep all your important travel contacts and the numbers of your family members written in a small note in your wallet. Share your hotel information and other important details like your itinerary draft and the name and address or some working number of the hotel with your family members in case they are worried about your whereabouts. For your reference here are some important numbers as a reference: Police: 100; Ambulance: 102

District Control Room: 1077; Emergency Contact Number [Integrated Police/ Fire Station/ Medical Services]: 108; Tourist Information Office (Shimla): 0177-2658302, 0177-2652561; Tourism Information Office (Manali): 01902-253531.

Health Safety Tips

If you think that you are sensitive to eating new food then avoid eating at roadside stalls and street vendors. Make sure that you carry your own water bottle or only buy properly sealed bottles from a good shop. There is a huge contaminated water problem in Manali and drinking it will cause stomach problems. For extra safety, you can even buy water purifying tablets. Carry a personal medication pouch with all the necessary medication you think that you will be needling like crocin, pain killers, band-aid, sanitizers, antiseptic creams, anti-motion sickness, and anti-diarrhea medicine. It would be wise to take advice from a healthcare professional for an extra and sure opinion.

These are some of the crucial travel tips for Manali that more often than not goes unnoticed. It is vital to keep these things in mind before heading out to the gorgeous hill station of Manali.

The ancient hill town of Manali is known for its panoramic vistas and lush greenery against a peaceful backdrop of imminent spirituality. People from all over the world have always been making their way to Manali as a way of seeking peace, exploring the Himalayan wilderness, and learning more about the interesting history this place has to offer. With a story and an adventure looming in almost every corner of this quaint hill station, it is needless to say that it is a magnet for travelers and tourists from all over the world.

However, your hill travel dreams can turn into an unexpected nightmare if you don’t know when is the best time to go to Manali. The reason being, it is a hill station in a very fragile and vulnerable part of the Himalayas. It is important to know when you can go safely and when to not venture out at all. People often miss out on this important detail and end up causing unprecedented issues in their travel experiences.

To make things easier, here is the best time to visit Manali:

Manali in Summer Season

The months of March to June mark the summer season in Manali. The snow melts away and the sky clears up, makes the whole valley bloom with wildflowers and the lush greenery is accentuated. This is also the time when schools are shut for vacation and families make their way up to enjoy the cool weather and beat the scorching heat of the plains. The temperature swings between 10 to 25 degrees Celsius and is considered to be the peak tourist month of Manali. You can enjoy many fun adventures in outdoor activities, go out sightseeing without any second thought and even check out some places around the vicinity of Manali. It’s definitely the safest and the most sought-after time to visit. If you want to add some more color then you can chalk out your travel plans around some festivals in Manali. Summertime in Manali is all about fun, good weather, and relaxation.

Manali in Monsoon Season

July to September is the monsoon season in Manali and the rest of the subcontinent as well. This is not one of the most favored times to go to Manali, in fact, if possible, you should avoid planning a trip during this time altogether. Due to heavy and relentless rain, the river sometimes gets flooded, roads get blocked due to landslides, and sometimes it may make the roads too slippery to take a car which would cause unexpected damage. It is best to avoid going to any hill station during the monsoon months. This has to be the off-season for tourism in Manali and hills in general. It is not an enjoyable time even if the hotel prices drop, you won’t be able to go out or make the most of the hill station during this season.

Manali in Winter Season

October to February are the certified winter months in Manali marked with cold chilly weather conditions accompanied with some snowfall as well. As the monsoon season of September begins to fade away the temperature takes a tremendous dip from October and goes on to fall sometimes even below 0 during the peak winter season, around December or January. If you don’t have a problem with the winter chill of the Himalayas then Manali during winter is just the thing for you. The winter season in this quaint hill town shows its different and very unique side. Although the temperature turns chilly, people could still go to snow treks through the jungle, check out beautiful surrounding snow-covered places, and experience the least number of tourists. It is somewhat a tourist season but they are at a minimum level and you would be able to get the best views. Make sure to pack a lot of thermal layering and woolen clothing in order to keep yourself safe from the biting cold, especially during the night.

Best Time to Visit

It goes without saying that the best and safest time to visit Manali is during the summer months of March to early June. Other than that if the cold weather is not a problem for you, then just pack up your woolens and other winter wear, and the winter vacation of a lifetime is guaranteed. If you wish to explore the hills of Manali with your family, loved ones, and kids, then the summer months of March to June are most preferred. Always remember that the mountains have their own personality and charisma and it is always good to not underestimate the might of destruction that may be caused unexpectedly.

Safe Travel Tips for Manali

Before traveling to Manali you should keep these safety travel tips in mind:

Pack a raincoat and carry a small but useful umbrella in case there are sudden weather changes.

Make sure to carry a fully charged portable charger and an extra pair of batteries for the torch. There are cases when there are power outages for a long time then these essentials may come in handy.

Wear the right shoes. Manali is on the hills which means you would need a good pair of sturdy shoes that would help keep a sure footing while walking on the hills, even if it is a short distance.

Nestled away amidst the scenic and divine hills of the Himalayas, Manali is a beautiful, quaint hill town that is home to not just a variety of flora and fauna but also too many different ethnicities. It is a wonderful mosaic of vibrant tribes, communities, and groups following different traditions, customs, and beliefs. Being the center of attention since the ancient ages, Manali has attracted lots of attention throughout and has now quickly turned into one of the most beloved prides of the north.

The way the locals of Manali dress represents their way of life and what their beliefs stand for. That’s the thing about the traditional Pahari dresses of the locals in Manali. They are made by hand, locally, using the locally available resources and made in a way to beat the harsh weather conditions. You can very well spot the locals on the streets of Manali solely based on their clothing pieces.

Here is everything you need to learn about the traditional dress of Manali:

Traditional Costume of Manali – Pahari Traditional Dress

Traditional Dress of Manali Men

The way men in Himachal dress up depicts which caste they belong to, what their profession is, and sometimes even which tribe or village they are coming from. It is not just random pieces of clothing but they have a lot of meaning and value attached to them. Broadly the population of Himachal is broadly divided into 2 groups; Brahmins and Rajput’s. This means that you could easily identify a Rajput man from a Brahmin man in Manali.

Rajput men make it a point to wear a long Kurta on Churidar Pajamas that gathers tightly around the ankles. A silk overcoat is another piece of interesting traditional clothing among Rajput men which is worn as a part of the tradition as well as to keep them safe from the biting cold. They also use yak leather embroidered with gold threads to make these awesome overcoats. A cloth turban is another piece of headgear that Pahari Rajput men wear. As a sign of pride, these men also grow out their moustache which is the real thread that holds the whole look together.

Brahmin men follow a simpler way of life which is depicted through their mostly white clothing. They wear long, mostly white, Kurta over a dhoti and a long overcoat topped with a similar turban to that of the Rajputs. What distinguishes the Brahmins is a soft towel-like cloth that these men carry on their shoulders. During special occasions, they swap the turban with a stiff cap, a woolen shawl, and Kurta pajama instead of the dhoti.

Traditional Dress of Manali Women

Himachali women are known for their interesting and unique styles that combine the ancient style of traditional designs, patterns, and bold colors. Jewellery is especially something that stands out. Except for a few variations it is very difficult to spot the difference between different tribes of Himachali women. Just like in the case of men, Rajput and Brahmin women are also divided broadly on the way they dress up.

Rajput women dress up in very long dresses covering their neck up to their feet. Traditionally they wear it over their long skirt or an oversized loose Salwar. This dress looks like a very long traditional Kurta. These are called Ghagras and Cholis worn under shirts or Kurtas. Largely these days, they also wear Salwar Kameez. With their clothing, they make sure to accessorize with a lot of bangles and traditional Jewelleries. The footwear they wear is made out of some locally sourced raw material like a yak skin or leather.

Somewhat similar to their traditional Rajput women counterparts, Brahmin women also wear a shirt or a blouse over salwar or a long skirt. Most of the women also tie up their Dupatta on their heads into a knot. During special occasions, they make sure to wear clothes made with good material and decorated with embellishments and fine embroidery.

Traditional Dress of Tribals in Manali

The Tribals constitute a majority of the inhabitants in the remote reaches of the hills of Manali. They coexist peacefully with nature and live humble lives dependent on natural resources. They live in forests and even reserves and national parks where civilians are not even allowed to venture. The Tribals of Manali, Spiti, and Kinnaur have a whole life of their own in the far-out parts of Himachali.

Tribal Women – The mark of any tribal women, be it in India or in foreign countries, is bulky and chunky silver Jewellery. For various special occasions, they wear vibrantly colored clothes and bulk Jewellery. They also cover their heads with a cloth which has its own name according to different tribes.

Tribal men mostly wear what people in the main city or villages of Manali wear more or less similar sort of clothing. To any layman or a tourist, they would fail to even recognize any difference. Tribal men wear Chola or a Kurta over something called a sultan or trousers. They adorn the lower with some kind of a belt called Dora that are specially hand woven and are available in various sizes.

The ethnic costumes of the Tribals of Manali are very similar to that of the Brahmins and Rajputs in Manali. Some of the most popular tribes of Himachal are Gaddis, Pangwalas, Kinnauris, and Gujjars.

Traditional Jewellery and Ornaments

Ornaments and Jewellery of men and women are considered to be very important parts of any traditional clothing among men as well as women. No matter which tribe or community you belong to, traditional Jewellery can be seen on every woman of Himachali. Some names of popular Jewellery here include – Chakk or a silver ornament that adorns the head, Chiiri or a Maang Tikka, Jhumka or dangling large earrings, Chandrahar which is an elaborate neckpiece with a pendant worn only on special occasions.

The traditional clothes of men and women of Manali and other parts of Himachal Pradesh are very distinct and can be spotted easily in a crowd. They are boldly colored and beautifully embroidered along with being very purposeful during the harsh cold winter season.

When it comes to the hill stations of India, Manali tops the list. Located in one of the most scenic parts of the Himalayas, Manali has always attracted explorers, sages, philosophers, travellers and the British! Manali has always been synonymous with a fun family getaway on the hills. Over time it has become one of the top choices for a holiday on the hills inviting people of all ages and all backgrounds from literally all over the world. With the river meandering through the valley supplying water to the lush forests and the people, once you have been to Romania you will understand the obsession people have with it. Reaching Manali is not difficult because the government has taken some much-needed steps in creating good quality roads, increased the number of flights and trains to its closest sources and offered cab, buses and taxi services as well.

If you are wondering how to get to Manali then here’s how:

By Road

Utilizing the roadway to reach Manali is one of the best ways of getting to Manali. This has to be a great way to save some money while travelling and take in some incredible views that will come on the way. If you are planning to travel by car or by bike, then the first thing you need to know is that the roads leading up to Manali are in good condition.

People from other parts of India make their way to Delhi and book a cab or a private or government-run bus to Manali. It is generally a 12 to 14-hour road journey covering over 500 kms in that time. The hill station is also very well connected through bus services to its nearby small towns as well like Shimla, Chandigarh, Ambala among others. You can also choose from AC Volvo services or non-AC services as well if travelling on a budget.

If you experience motion sickness then it would be wise for you to take an anti-motion sickness medicine. This is because the roads beyond Mandi, which is the final, leg of the trip, Zig Zag a little too much. There are many apps like redBus that will enable you to book your choice of a bus ticket from anywhere and anytime.

By Train

When it comes to train journeys, there is no direct train or railway station available in Manali which caters to trains coming in from different parts of the country. The nearest railway station is situated in Chandigarh from where Manali is just over 200 kms. People normally take a train from Delhi to Chandigarh and then book a cab service or rent a car. Another nearby railway station for Manali is located in Kalka which is close to 300 kms away and from Ambala Cantt which is a little over 300 kms away.

Some Popular train routes for Manali include Kolkata – Jammu Tawi Express, Howrah – Amritsar Express, New Delhi – Amritsar Shatabdi Express, Howrah – Kalka Mail, New Delhi Kalka Shatabdi Express etc. All these trains run at full capacity or maximum capacity almost every time of the year so it is important to book your train tickets to Manali as soon as possible!

By Flight

This has to be one of the least preferred ways of getting to Manali by air because of the high altitude, uncertain weather conditions and difficult terrain that does not allow a safe flight journey on many occasions leading to cancellations. However, if you wish to save on time then the nearest airport to Manali is in Bhuntar which is about 50 kms away from Manali and just 10 kms away from Kullu valley. It is a small airport that caters to small domestic flights from Delhi and Chandigarh which are also very expensive.

The only 2 flight carriers that function in Bhuntar are air India and Himalayan bulls. Sadly their services are irregular and the flight tickets cost an exorbitant amount. Once you reach Bhuntar airport you can book a pre-paid taxi service that will drop you off in Manali. However, this is not the best travel option if you are travelling on a budget and are looking for a dependable way to get around.

Reaching Manali is not very difficult especially if you live nearby and have your own mode of travelling. We would suggest that you stick to the road routes even while travelling in a bus because that is the surest and the most dependable way of getting there.

Nestled away in the Himalayan hills of Himachal Pradesh Manali has a culture that is rooted in its ancient past. People have been living in Manali much before the British decided to make it their summer capital. It remained cut off from civilization and commercialization for a really long time which helped shape the cultural and traditional foundation of the people’s beliefs.

If you have a keen eye while traveling you will notice that the local people of Manali dress up differently, celebrate festivals and fairs distinctive to that area and even speak in their own dialect. The culture of Manali can be defined as a combination of rural and traditional. The enchanting slopes and mystical forest of Manali are not only home to the local inhabitants here but it coexists peacefully with the surrounding nature which is also depicted through their culture.

So the next time you are in Manali learning about their culture would make your holiday experience even more wholesome. Here is everything you need to know about the culture of Manali:

Music

India is a colorful subcontinent with every state having its own musical culture which creates a beautiful combination of rhythms and harmony. In the same manner, Manali is also home to a unique culture of music and singing. They have specific songs for very specific occasions like marriage, festivals, fairs, devotional and party music! For example ‘Jhoori’ is a type of song that celebrates extramarital romance and as bizarre as it may sound to other people, for the hill people there is music for everything imaginable. Laman songs of Kullu Valley are also hugely popular with traditional Manali folks. During festivals, Samskara songs fill the air which is sung mainly by the local women. These types of songs are entirely based on ragas that are the compositions of Indian classical music.

The folk music of Manali also features some amazing musical instruments that include percussion, wind instruments, and strings. There are also many non-percussion instruments that add beauty to any song effortlessly like gongs, tongs, cymbals, and various bells. Shehnai, flute, twin flutes, and trumpets are also important in folk musical performances.

Dance

From worshipping the lord to welcoming a different season or during some special occasion, Manali has specific dances set for almost every specific event. The folk dance in the Kullu district is called Naati which is very popular across the state as well. It is performed on almost any special occasion like marriages but also as a way of worshipping the Lord. The dance is done by both male and female performers where the music is carried on with instruments like Dhol, Magara, Shehnai, Karnal, and Ranasinghe, most of which are used in many other dance performances.

While performing dance women wear traditional Kulluvi Woollen clothes which are called Pattu. This Pattu is secured using pins and silver chains on top of their traditional wear. They wear headgear as well and complete the look by wearing handmade footwear as well. Male dancers make sure to wear long Woollen coats, which are secured with smaller pieces of clothes called Doris. A woolen cap and hanging garland made of colorful pieces of clothes complete the look.

In order to entertain the tourist, the government of Himachal Pradesh organizes Naati dance and other local folk dance performances on mall road to entertain and educate the tourists about the rich culture of Manali. Did you know that in 2019, over 8,000 female dancers of Kullu valley danced together to create the world record of most number of female dancers doing Naati in one go?

Arts and Crafts

Visiting Manali is not just about the beautiful scenic views that you get experienced everywhere, it is further enhanced when you get to learn all about the traditional heritage and culture of Manali. It is not just a source of livelihood for the locals to make arts and crafts but it captures the true essence of the bygone era that has shaped the culture of Manali. Most of the raw materials for the arts and crafts in Manali are sourced from naturally occurring products in the vicinity. In order for the tourists to truly feel the Manali vibe, you can buy traditional souvenirs like excellent Jewellery pieces, wooden sculptures, embroidered shawls, leather clothing items, and gemstones, cute little Jewellery boxes. They also display an incredible collection of carpets and rugs with unique patterns, floral designs, and interesting ethnic drawings on them.

Way of Life

The culture and customs followed by the locals of Manali and other parts of Himachal Pradesh are very important to them. They have been following the same customs and traditions for a very long time now and intend on doing so for a very long time. The regular way of life in Manali is heavily influenced by the tribal rules, local cultures, and traditions which are mostly centered around respecting and offering prayer to the lord, nature, and the coexisting creations that they are surrounded by. They believe that if they offer their prayers and respect to the creators and nature then they will invite good luck into their lives and nature will be good to them.

The locals are mainly dependent on artisanal activities and agriculture for their livelihood. Other than that over time, tourism has also become one of the most important sources of income for the locals in Manali. The rich, preserved, and traditional past of Manali is resonated perfectly through their works of art, dance forms, and language.

Language and religion

Time and again we have learned that Manali is home to many different tribes and communities. So it goes without saying that there are many different types of languages spoken in Manali who also follow different religious practices, many of which remain unheard of. Some of the most iconic festivals celebrated in Manali are Dussehra, Hadimba Devi Temple fair and Losar festival, Doongri festival, and even the Tibetan new year. These festivals show that Pahari festivals and fairs depict the age-old culture of Manali.

The culture of Manali is all about color, vibrancy, harmony, and love. Everything about the people of Manali represents what they believe and stand for.

Situated in the northern end of the Kullu Valley, Manali is a scenic hill station whose popularity goes back to the ancient ages. This iconic mythical Himalayan hill town marks the beginning point of the ancient trade route that goes through the current union territory of Ladakh, over the Karakoram pass and right into the Yarkand and Hotan in the Tarim basin of china. Currently, it is one of the most hugely popular hill stations of India which is dotted with many quirky cafes, ancient temples, and fascinating trekking trails.

Every step of the way in Manali will feel like walking into a fairytale land because the place is the speed in several historical and mythological folklores. Anywhere you look around; you will be presented with some incredible historical event or the other. Unfolding these hidden stories and putting together the pieces of the iconic history of Manali will only make you fall in love more with this place.

Here is an interesting and encapsulating history of Manali that you not have already known:

Manali and the Story of Manu

Manali is believed to be the hometown of the Brahmin law enforcer Manu. That’s why the name of this hill station may also seem like it has been drawn from Manu’s name. Apparently, he was so struck by the raw natural untouched beauty of Manali while wandering the Himalayas on foot that he chose to stay here. Initially, it was named Manu-Alaya which meant the house of Manu. But how is Manu any more related to Manali? The story will take you back to the 7th incarnation of Manu.

Manu had come across a tiny fish that asked him to take care of it. Manu took good care of the fish till it grew and grew into a massive fish that needed to be left in water, in its natural habitat. Before going into the sea the fish warned Manu of the impending doom and deluge that the world was about to experience. The fish suggested Manu build a boat to survive the remainder of the world when it gets submerged in water. Manu then built a boat that housed many sages, philosophers, animals, flowers, and insects. He managed to save everything and everyone that was on his boat. Once the water dried up slowly, Manu decided to tie up his boat on a shore in Manali.

Manali during Ramayan and Mahabharat

The city has been repeatedly termed as the valley of gods due to its religious and spiritual significance. The iconic Hidimba Devi Temple has been associated with the Pandavas of the legendary Hindu epic Mahabharat. According to the sagas, Bhimsen killed a strong and cruel demon Hadimb and married his sister Hadimba who was a sturdy deity whereas another legend says Arjuna practiced self-discipline in a cave called ‘Arjun Gupha’ to get the powerful Pashupatastra from Indra. During the Mahabharata period, the great sage Vyas performed his tapa at a place called ‘Vyas Kund’ on Rohtang Pass. Manali and its surrounding areas are dotted with ancient holy and legendary temples and places of worship of religious importance. Not only is it the home of a variety of different gods and goddesses but it is also home to the Sapt Rishi or the most important seven sages that are one of the most important pillars of Hindu culture.

Manali during British Raj

The British territories on the hills came under the British crown after Queen Victoria’s proclamation in 1858. States like Mandi, Siba, Kangra, and others were very loyal to the British folks in the beginning and even supplied them with the necessary men and raw materials as required by them. During the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Manali had brought an idol of Lord Raghunath Ji to Manali who continues to be the presiding deity of the entire region. However, all this was altered on some level due to the continuous visit and settlement by the British folks. They frequented Manali for its pleasant weather and accessibility which came with an assurance of a feeling of deep rejuvenation. Impressed by the natural beauty the Britishers started spending a lot of time there and started developing the place by building new roads, churches, houses, and more facilities that benefited not just the Britishers but also the local people of Manali. It was the British that had introduced apple farming through setting up orchards here. Some people owe it to the British for setting up this orchard which went on to attract a plethora of tourists from all over the world.

Fun facts you didn’t know about Manali

Did you know that Manali is not just one small village hamlet? It is actually a combination of 3 different hills that are adjacent to each other which are called Old Manali (Manu Temple); Vashishth (Vashisht Temple) and Dhungri (Hidimba Temple).

The months of May to October are the best months for a visit to Manali that entails adventure as well as peaceful activities ranging from trekking and hiking to paragliding and even rafting.

The iconic Hidimba Devi Temple which is worshipped by everyone is actually a demon. Hidimba was Bhima’s wife when he was exiled in the forest and then goes on to bear a demon son for him whose name was Ghatotkach. Did you know this wooden temple is over 400 years old?

It is no surprise that Manali is home to one of the most pristine qualities of apples owing to the perfect natural conditions which are created by the river Beas as well. Almost every house in Manali owns one apple tree or an orchard that defines their culture, heritage, and tradition of coexisting with nature.

Do you love Rohtang Pass or are curious to explore it in any way? Literally speaking, Rohtang translates into a heap of dead bodies. It is said that groups of people who were unable to cross over the pass and passed away here, the name pass is dedicated to their condition. The reason being, Rohtang is susceptible to unexpected flurries of snow storms that’s why the government of Manali regularly issues travel advisories as well.
