The Chardhams in Uttarakhand are the holiest pilgrimage Yatra for Hindu devotees. Devotees visit these holy Dhams for divine grace, spiritual purification and Moksha. If the journey to the sacred Chardhams in Uttarakhand has always been on your spiritual bucket list, you have come to the right place. To visit Chardhams, registration is the first step to officially confirm your journey. Through this blog, we will guide you in advance to prepare for the registration process of the Chardham pilgrimage journey so that you can plan your journey on time with all the relevant arrangements.

Why is Registration Important for Chardham Yatra?

The 2013 Kedarnath flood changed everything. Nearly 5,000 people lost their lives — and one of the biggest challenges the government faced was that no one knew exactly how many pilgrims were on the route. That tragedy led to the mandatory Chardham Yatra registration system we have today.

On the ground, the registration system works as a real-time headcount. Each Dham has a daily pilgrim limit — cross that number, and the area becomes unsafe, especially during sudden weather changes in high-altitude terrain. Registration ensures you're counted, tracked, and reachable if something goes wrong.

What most people don't realize is that without a valid registration slip, you can be turned back at checkpoints — even if you've already reached Sonprayag or Joshimath after a long journey. No slip, no entry. It's that simple.

Beyond safety, the system helps the government plan resources — SDRF teams, medical camps, helicopter rescue zones — based on the actual number of registered pilgrims on any given day.

You also have to carry valid ID proof, such as an Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport, PAN card, or driving license, with the Yatra registration letter.
Health Checks During Registration for Chardham

If you are over 50 years of age and suffering from diseases like heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, or diabetes, then you need a doctor's fitness certificate to show that you are physically fit to undertake Chardham Yatra.

At screening points also, an important health check will be conducted to check blood pressure, heart rate, diabetes, etc., to verify that you are fit for the journey. So, while registering for Chardham, ensure that you are healthy.

Start acclimatization practice, breathing exercises, having a nutritious diet, walking and running, etc. three months before the journey of Chardham to maintain your health.

What if you’re stopped at the health screening? If a pilgrim is declared unfit during a medical check, they cannot continue and are advised to return to the nearest safe spot. Getting prior doctor clearance—especially for those 50+—is essential.

Peak Pilgrimage Season for Yamunotri Darshan

The best time to plan Yamunotri pilgrimage tour is in the months of April, May, June, September, and October. These are the peak pilgrimage months for a hassle-free pilgrimage experience in the high-altitude mountain region.

Avoid monsoons (July to August) for the Yamunotri tour. You will experience heavy rainfall, landslides, and slippery roads, which will make your trek very challenging and dangerous.

Yamunotri Dham is closed for six months in winter (November to early April) due to heavy snowfall. The temperature goes down to sub-zero levels. During that time, a thick blanket of snow covers the entire landscape of Yamunotri Dham, rendering the path inaccessible for the devotees.

Kapat Opening Ceremony of Yamunotri Dham

The Kapat opening ceremony of Yamunotri Dham is the most awaited ritual for Hindu devotees. It is considered very lucky if any devotee gets a chance to witness the Kapat opening ceremony of Yamunotri Temple. The Kapat opens during Mangala Aarti for the devotees in the early hours. The priests chant mantras and install the Yamunotri Idol. The Aarti takes place with Vedic chants and rituals to honor the goddess, Yamuna. Devotees take a holy dip at Janki Kund, located near the temple, and receive Prasad (sacred offering); the event also marks the starting of the pilgrimage season.

Kapat Closing Ceremony of Yamunotri Dham

The Kapat closing ceremony of the sacred Yamunotri Temple is also known as the Kapat Band ceremony. It occurs on the festival of Bhai Dooj, which falls a day or two after Diwali, the festival of lights. This ritual also marks the end of the pilgrimage season. Priests chant Vedic mantras and do the final Aarti worship to honor Goddess Yamuna before closing the doors for the next six months in the winter due to heavy snowfall.

Winter Seat of Yamunotri Dham

The winter home of goddess Yamunotri is Kharsali, located in the Uttarkashi district at a small Shani Dev Temple. Due to heavy snowfall and harsh temperature, the idol of Yamuna is shifted to Kharsali to maintain the continuity of worship even in winters. Pilgrims visit Kharsali at the Shani Dev Temple to receive the divine blessings of Goddess Yamuna.

Yamunotri Temple is located near the foot of Kalind Parbat, perched atop a flank of Bandarpoonch Parbat in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand in the western Garhwal Himalayas. Being the commencing point for the holy Chota Char Dham Yatra, it is frequented by numerous devotees in the summertime, looking to offer prayers at the revered shrine dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna, the divine representation of the holy river. Here is a list of tourist attractions to visit around Yamunotri, apart from the actual temple itself.

Janki Chatti

Janki Chatti is the main town center near the Yamunotri temple, from where the 3-4 hour trek to the temple starts. It is the primary place for pilgrims to stay while visiting the temple since it is the last motorable place and therefore it is a hub for hotels and restaurants and other facilities that tourists and pilgrims need for the journey. Janki Chatti also has a number of hot springs where it is considered auspicious for pilgrims to take a dip

Hanuman Chatti

Hanuman Chatti was earlier the starting point of the trek to Yamunotri Dham since there was no road up to Janki Chatti. Some tourists and pilgrims still start their trek from Hanuman Chatti since it is a picturesque trek even though longer in terms of distance. The Hanuman Temple in Hanuman Chatti is also a major tourist attraction. It is also a popular spot for trekking to Darwa Top and Dodi Tal.

Surya Kund

Located near the Yamunotri temple itself, Surya Kund is named after the Sun God; father of Goddess Yamuna is a thermal hot water spring that is considered holy in Hindu mythology. The hot water of the spring is used to cook rice and potatoes which are served as Parsad to devotees visiting the Temple.

Divya Shila

The Divya Shilla or the Divine Stone near the Surya Kund also holds enormous importance as it is considered that a mere touch of the sacred rock can lead a soul to liberation and it is customary to worship the Divya Shila before offering prayers at the Yamunotri Dham.

Saptrishi Kund

Saptrishi Kund said to be the original source of the Yamuna River is a high-altitude lake located at a height of around 4400 meters. The Lake or Kund is fed by the Champasar glacier and is considered very holy due to the belief that the Saptarishis or the seven sages performed penance there. Owing to the adverse weather and steep elevation, the 16 km trek is not an easy one. Moreover, there are no paved paths or camping sites, thus it is only recommended for experienced and skilled mountaineers. However, despite the immense natural beauty of the surrounding mountainside and the religious significance attached to the Kund, a lot of people still make the journey to the real source of the Holy Yamuna River.

Kharsali

Kharsali or Khushimath, located near Janki Chatti is the winter home of the idol of Goddess Yamuna. The oldest Shani Dev Temple in India is located here, and the idol is kept in this very temple for six months in winter. Apart from the religious significance of the village, it is also relished for its quaint views of the snow-capped mountains surrounding the village. The adjoining landscape also provides for a host of camping opportunities, both for avid campers as well as those looking for luxury camping opportunities.

Barkot

Barkot is the last major town en route to Yamunotri Dham, well known for its numerous trekking trails amidst the serene mountain landscapes. Barkot is also a hotspot for white water rafting, as both Ganga and Yamuna rivers pass through the town.

Dayara Bugyal

Dayara Bugyal is a beautiful meadow perched at an elevation of 3048 meters offering unparalleled views of the snow-clad Himalayan mountain range. A one-of-a-kind spot for camping, the Bugyal is reached via Barsu Village which is considered a sort of a base camp for the trek. Barnala Tal a beautiful Himalayan lake around 4 km from Barsu village and Bakaria Top, the highest point in the nearby region are some of the most famous attractions of the trek. In winters the Bugyal is completely clad in snow and is also a major destination for avid skiers.

Dodi Tal

Dodital Trek is one of the most stunning treks near the Yamunotri Dham. Dodital, the source of River ‘Asi Ganga’, is an emerald lake nuzzled amidst high mountains at an altitude of 3310 meters. With its tranquil setting and placid surroundings, Dodi Tal is perhaps one of the most gorgeous high-altitude lakes in North India. The lake is one of the few to contain Himalayan trout, known as Dodi in the local language and it derives its name from the same. According to legend, this is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, and a beautiful temple dedicated to him is located on one corner of the lake. Darwa Top or Darwa Pass, a one-day hike from Dodital is another well-known spot frequented by visitors to experience the breathtaking views of numerous Himalayan peaks.

Gidara Bugyal

Situated around 20 kms beyond the Dayara Bugyal at an altitude of around 300 meters, Gidara Bugyal is relatively unexplored. Slightly more complicated than the Dayara Bugyal trek, this trek is suitable for trekkers with some amount of experience and skill. The trek encompasses a vast expanse of lush green meadow blooming with mottled and extravagant wildflowers and offers magnificent views of the Bandarpoonch Peak and the Gangotri range.

The Yamunotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Yami; the divine representation of the sacred river Yamuna, can easily be placed among one of the most revered shrines in the Hindu system of belief. Counted as one of the pilgrimage sites in the holy Chota Char Dham Yatra, as well as the commencing point for the same, the temple is immersed in the spirit of divinity and spirituality. Owing to its immense religious significance as well as its abundant natural beauty, the Yamunotri temple is thronged by devotees looking to pray at the holy site during the summer, as the temple opens its gates on the day of Akshaya Tritiya in May and closes on Yama Dwitiya in October/November. During winters, the idol of the Goddess is carried to the nearby village of Kharsali for pilgrims to pay their homage.

Location

Situated in a narrow gorge on the banks of the river Yamuna very close to its source, amidst the breathtaking natural splendor of the western Garhwal Himalayas, the temple falls in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, some 130 kilometers from the main district headquarters at an altitude of around 3300 meters. The temple is perched atop a flank of Bandarpoonch Parbat, near the foot of Kalind Parvat where the actual source of the river, the Champasar Glacier is located at an altitude of 4421 meters. However, the glacier is largely inaccessible due to extreme weather and highly technical trekking route therefore no temple or shrine exists there, and devotees pay their respects at the Yamunotri temple itself.

Getting There

The nearest place to Yamunotri which is accessible by a vehicle is Janki Chatti, around 6-8 hours from the nearest Railway Station (Dehradun) as well as the Airport (Jolly Grant). In absence of any motorable roads, pilgrims have to trek uphill for about 6 kilometers from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri to reach the temple. The climb takes around 3-4 hours and is undertaken as a sign of devotion to the Goddess Yamuna; however, palanquin services as well as pony rides are also available for those unfit to undertake the strenuous climb but still looking to complete the pilgrimage. For those looking for something more challenging, there are also two breathtakingly beautiful trekking routes that commence from Hanuman Chatti, one along the right bank of the river via the Markandeya Tirth and the other through the village of Kharsali on the left bank of the river. These are longer and take around 6-7 hours each, but those who undertake them are rewarded by unrivaled views of the surrounding mountainside. Another unique and exciting way of experiencing Yamunotri, while indulging in luxury and adventure, is availing of Helicopter services. These services are available from Dehradun and take devotees directly to Kharsali, where connecting services like Palanquins or Ponies to reach Yamunotri are provided.

Religious Significance

The river Yamuna is one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism, and her confluence with Ganga and the mythical Saraswati at Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj is an extremely revered pilgrimage. It is considered that drinking the waters of Yamuna absolves one of their sins and bathing in its waters protects against untimely and unpleasant death. The Yamunotri Devi temple is surrounded by many hot water springs and the two most significant of these are the Surya Kund and Gauri Kund. While Gauri Kund has tepid water appropriate for bathing, Surya Kund has boiling hot water where Rice and potatoes are boiled to be served as Prasad for the pilgrimage. The Divya Shila or the Divine Stone near the Surya Kund also holds immense significance as it is considered that a mere touch of the sacred rock can lead a soul to liberation and it is customary to worship the Divya Shila before offering prayers to Goddess Yamuna.

Legends

Goddess Yamuna is the twin sister of Lord Yama, The God of Death, and the Daughter of Surya (Sun) and is considered as one of the eight consorts of Lord Krishna, or Astabharya. There are various legends associated with the Goddess Yamuna, also referred to sometimes as Yami or Kalindi (Daughter of Kalind, which is another name for Surya or Sun) in the Puranic literature. The Padma Purana mentions a story of two brothers who lead a sinful life but the younger brother is granted Swarga (Heaven) by virtue of bathing in the Yamuna for two months while the elder brother is sentenced to Narka (Hell), which highlights the importance attached to River Yamuna in ancient Indian texts. In a different legend, Yamunotri is described as the hermitage of Asit Muni, a venerated sage who was known to bath daily in both Ganga and Yamuna, but as old age approached could not continue his daily travels to reach Ganga. It is said that due to the piety of the great sage, Ganga herself started to flow in Yamunotri in the form of a stream so that the Muni could continue his practice without any difficulties. The significance of Yamuna is also emphasized in the Ramayana as it is said that after burning Lanka, Lord Hanuman doused his blazing tail in the cold water of Yamuna near its source, hence the name of the peak Bandarpoonch (Tail of the monkey).

Current Temple

The Yamunotri Temple, as it stands today made using granite stones on the left bank of the river, was constructed by Maharani Guleria Devi of Jaipur in the 19th century, but it is unanimously believed that The king of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah had created the temple in 1839 but it was largely destroyed due to an earthquake. Topped with a golden tower with red borders, the temple consists of a Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanatorium) and a Mandap (Gathering Hall), and a small patio that joins the main entrance. The Garbhagriha contains an idol of Goddess Yamuna made with black marble along with one of Goddess Ganga in white stone, as per the legend of Asit Muni.

List of Most Famous Tourist Places in Gangotri

1. Dharali Valley Viewpoint

Dharali is a quintessential traditional Himalayan village. Located just half an hour away from the main Gangotri Dham Temple, Dharali is the perfect place for nature lovers and peace seekers. The slate-roofed wooden homes, tall green trees, lush rolling hills, gushing Bhagirathi River, and a refreshingly serene environment. Unlike other popular tourist places in Uttarakhand, Dharali is known for its peaceful vibe and rejuvenating surroundings. This is the perfect place to sit back, relax, and perform yoga and meditation.

2. Harsil

Speaking of scenic traditional Uttarakhand villages, Harsil deserves a special mention. Located at a distance of just an hour from the Gangotri temple, Harsil serves as the helipad for the Gangotri Dham Yatra by Helicopter. However, it is more than that. Harsil is a breath of fresh air in the spiritually doused region of Uttarkashi. Just like Dharali, Harsil is also situated on the bank of the Bhagirathi River, and it remains unspoiled from the hands of commercialism. Recently, Harsil has gained a lot of popularity among avid trekkers and adventure enthusiasts for its numerous trekking trails close to the vicinity of this quaint village.

3. Mukhba Village

The small and quaint village of Mukhba is situated very close to the Gangotri Dham Temple. It is famous as the winter home of the goddess Gangotri. During the winter season, when the region remains completely covered in snow, making the pilgrimage impossible, the idol of the goddess is brought down to the village of Mukhba. This is also an incredibly pious village as it is also the place from where the priest of Gangotri Dham hails. From spirituality to natural beauty, Mukhba village is all about peaceful serenity and calming spirituality. During the Gangotri Dham Yatra, it is impossible not to spot the village route.

4. Gartang Gali

Gartang Gali is unlike any other adventure experience. Situated by the roaring river along the mountainside via a narrow wooden bridge is this iconic landmark. Situated about 90 to 100 km from the district of Uttarkashi, the Gali is an adrenaline-pumping experience. Tourists walk through this narrow, wooden pathway, which was built about 150 years ago and was once shut down for service during the 1960s. This wooden step bridge is now open for tourists to visit and have the same experience as the Pathan traders who used to take this route from Tibet to reach Devbhoomi.

5. Gaumukh Glacier Trek

Starting from behind the temple of Gangotri, is the iconic trek to the starting point, the glacier source for the Ganga River, Gaumukh. The trek can be gruelling and kind of challenging. It is a 46 km long trek that goes on for 6 to 7 days, depending on your trekking speed. It takes the trekker on an experience of a lifetime that not many are fortunate enough to have. The glacier is a massive cow-snout-shaped formation from where the Ganga River gushes out and goes on to become the life-giving source on the mountains and the plains. The trail takes you through the confines of the Gangotri National Park and the other greater Himalayan regions.

6. Gangotri National Park

Gangotri National Park is a massive national park that spreads out to an area of about 2,400 sq. km it is home to lush alpine and conifer cover, glaciers, and peaceful meadows. It is also home to the iconic temple of Gangotri (hence the name) and the Gaumukh Glacier, or the origin of Ganga. Established in 1989, the national park is a very well-protected region that is home to a variety of trees, shrubs, and western Himalayan subalpine forests that coexist with a variety of other flora, fauna, birds, and insects.

7. Dodital Lake Trek

The sparkling emerald waters of the Dodital Lake, which are blessed with scenic vistas all around, are famous as one of the prettiest high-altitude lake treks in the world. Located at an elevation of over 3,000 metres above sea level, the lake has made its place amongst the towering Himalayas. The lake is named after the fresh Himalayan trout called Dodi that is found here. The trek up to the lake is a moderate one, but it takes 2 days and starts from Sangam Chatti. There is also a small Ganesh Temple located by the lake that is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesh.

8. Dayara Bugyal

Bugyal in the local Pahadi language means a grazing meadow. Dayara Bugyal is undoubtedly the most beautiful and perfectly scenic Bugyal trek in the country. The trek lasts for 6 days, and its difficulty level ranges from easy to moderate. For hundreds of years and even before that, shepherds have been taking their cattle to graze on the fields of the Bugyal, and even to this day, you can spot herds of sheep being grazed here, which just adds to the whole experience. The Bugyal also offers a clear and unrestricted view of the Himalayan range at eye level. A trek that everyone should at least go for once.

9. Nelong Valley

Reopened in 2015, Nelong Valley is a hub for adventure buffs who love to challenge their adventurous boundaries. The geographical features of the valley bear a striking resemblance to the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh, which has earned its name – the Ladakh of Uttarakhand. Walking by the super-narrow mountainside where the Tibetan traders used to bring hoards of stuff to Uttarakhand is an eye-opening experience. It was closed off during the China War, and it opened up recently after some maintenance work. The entire walk is pretty nerve-racking since it is just above the immediate drop by the gushing river and encapsulated within tight and very large mountain rocks on one side, and also from above.

10. Kalindi Khal Trek

Kalindi Khal Trek has got to be one of the most underrated yet very interesting treks in India. The trek starts off from Gangotri town and goes through a variety of naturally mesmerizing geographical features like natural lakes, snowfields, rocky terrains, and glittering glaciers. It is considered to be a difficult trek that requires trekking equipment to cover. The trip will have you cover the Gaumukh Glacier and an ascent to Tapovan and Nandanvan. This glacial paradise of a trek is recommended only for expert trekkers and mountaineers.

Gangotri is a scenic little town, settled on the hills of Garhwal in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. It boasts a lush green cover, the holy river of Bhagirathi, and the iconic Char Dham temple of Gangotri. Due to its religious and spiritual relevance, Gangotri has garnered a reputation for being one of the top destinations for goddess worship. Being a part of the Char Dham temples along with Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Yamunotri, Gangotri remains swarming with devotees each time the temple opens its doors for Darshan every 6 months.

The culture of Gangotri is very unique to its region. It draws its beliefs from the age-old, highly religious bygone era. Located in Uttarkashi, Gangotri offers relief for people looking to spend some time in nature with a hint of adventure.

History of Gangotri

Gangotri is located within the district of Uttarkashi. It translates into the Kashi of the north due to its highly revered and sacred temple site. The history of Gangotri can be traced back to the early Satyug. The story involves King Bhagirath. After King Sagar’s 60,000 sons were massacred for interrupting the meditating sage Kapila, his kingdom went on a spiralling downfall. At the advice of his priest, King Bhagirath decided to perform intense meditation on the goddess Ganga and requested her to make her way to the earthly realm from the heavenly realm. This was the only way that the sins of his ancestors could have been absolved, and his kingdom would have been re-established. After meditating hard near the temple of Gangotri, goddess Ganga agreed to make her way to the earthly realm. She stepped on earth and washed away the sins and ashes of the bygone ancestors. Ever since then, the river has come to be known as Bhagirathi Nadi, and the temple marks the original starting point of the Ganga River. People from all over India reach the temple to perform Pind Puja rituals to please their ancestors or pour the ashes and mortal remains of someone who is no longer alive. This legendary fact goes on to show the importance of Gangotri and the Bhagirathi River.

People of Gangotri

The locals of Gangotri reside in the nearby regions of the temple. During the peak Char Dham season, the entire village area of Gangotri springs to life with devotees and tourists. The locals rely on Char Dham Tourism for their livelihood. When the temple shuts down for function during the heavy snow and winter season, the locals have nothing to do and they also head downwards towards the lower reaches of the Himalayas, where the temperature is bearable and there are services available as well. Other than tourism and agriculture, the people of Gangotri are involved in several different forms of art and craft. They adhere to their old age rituals and traditions while being humble and respectful as well.

Fairs and Festivals of Gangotri

Being a holy Hindu religious spot, all the Hindu fairs and festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal. The majority of people here are Hindus and speak their local languages, with Hindi and Garhwali being the main spoken tongues. The temple celebrates the closing of the temple during Diwali. The idol of the goddess is transferred to her winter home in Mukhba village, which is very close to the main temple. The idol is taken back to the main temple on Akshaya Tritiya amidst the same enthusiasm and celebration. The entire Gangotri valley keenly celebrates Hindu festivals. This includes Holi, Diwali, and Dussehra. There are many festivals and fairs that the people of Gangotri celebrate on a local level, dedicated to their local gods and goddesses. These religious practices are locally elaborated to suit and match their faith.

Food of Gangotri

Being a highly religious Hindu town, Gangotri offers only pure vegetarian cuisine. They utilize the locally available produce. One can expect vegetarian dishes like lentils, Dals, Rice, Roti, seasonal veggies, and fresh fruits to eat. Non-vegetarian cuisines and the consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited. The food is organic in every way, as the people here grow their food without the use of any pesticides or insecticides. Some Indo-Chinese food can also be found here, like Momos, Maggi, Chowmein, soups, etc.

Activities in Gangotri

Gangotri has caught the attention of not just spiritually inclined people but also adventure lovers. It has rightly been called ‘the doorway to popular treks’. Uttarkashi is the last village that falls on the way to some of the most popular trekking trails in Uttarakhand. Furthering its intention of being the top adventure sports hub is the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, which is also located in Uttarkashi. Here are some interesting adventure activities to do in Gangotri:

Trekking – This is one of the most popular activities people do in Gangotri. Trekking up to the Gaumukh Glacier, trekking and camping up to Dodital, treks to Dayara Bugyal, Kedartal, etc.

Mountaineering – The interesting geography of Gangotri consists of jagged terrain, deep valleys, gushing rivers, and ancient mountain rocks. This makes Gangotri the perfect place for challenging your mountaineering and other such outdoor skills.

Meditation And Yoga – Ever since the ancient ages, sages, philosophers, and priests would make their way up to the many different forests of Gangotri for yoga and meditation. The backdrop of lush surroundings and quietness makes it a wonderful place for people to feel closer to themselves and nature.

Puja Performance:

The special puja and rituals take place in the inner sanctum of the temple around the triangular granite lingam of lord Kedar. All the rituals are done as per the instructions of the head priest. The head priest has learned these rituals and various puja steps through the great sage and seer Adi Shankaracharya, who had laid down the rules way back. The committee of Kedarnath is responsible for organizing, booking, and performing these special pujas and rituals. These rituals are performed before the start of the general puja Darshan in the morning.

It is a great idea to get the general puja quoting and plan your trip budget accordingly.
