Established on the banks of River Sabarmati, Ahmedabad was the former capital city of Gujarat and has witnessed the rule of several kingdoms right from Sultanate to Mughal rule to Maratha and British rule. During the struggling phase of Indian independence, the city served as the home to several prominent leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel.

In the present day, Ahmedabad is crowned as the ‘Manchester of India’ because of its splendor in trade, especially in cotton. This industrial city has beheld some extreme and admiring environment in its early years. One can turn different chapters of its biography including dynamic cultures, rise in trade, economic balance, and war for the rule.

Let’s recall the incidents that occurred in the city and relive the eventful history of Ahmedabad by scrolling down the pages.

Ahmedabad History – Origin, Mighty Maratha & British

Origin of Ahmedabad

Gujarat happened to be an important territory of the Muslim Muzaffarid dynasty at the beginning of the 15th century. The legend says that once Sultan Ahmed Shah was walking around River Sabarmati and witnessed an improbable moment. He saw a little hare was chasing a vicious dog which is quite unreal as it’s the other way around. He was completely numb to see this incident and called upon his spiritual advisor to know a better understanding of it.

The advisor explained it as a miracle of this fascinated land that develops such uniqueness among humans as well as animals. His words stunned the Sultan and then he commanded his ministers to announce Ahmedabad as the capital of his kingdom.

The claim of Solankis

The archaeologists revealed some super magnificent and interesting facts about the history of Ahmedabad. The city was called Ashapalli ruled by the Bhil kings during the 10th century and in the next century, Bhil received a challenge to save their throne. An inevitable challenge occurred between Bhil Kings and Solanki ruler Karandev. Solanki’s were the vanquishers of this battle and their rule continued in the city till the 13th century. Vaghela rulers dethroned Solanki’s in the 13th century and established their kingdom.

Footprints of the Sultanate

Sultan Ahmed Shah, a great ruler of the Sultanate Empire of Gujarat contributed a lot towards the development of this city. Muhammad Begada, the grandson of Sultan Ahmed when took charge of the kingdom started the construction of a huge wall to secure the city from its enemies. The outer wall of this protection boundary was almost 6 kilometers long with 12 intricately designed gates installed in it.

Unfortunately, the Sultanate Empire of Gujarat couldn’t rule over the city for a long time and Muhammad Begada became the last ruler of this dynasty.

The Mughals invasion

In 1573, the Sultanate’s rule was crushed aside by Akbar, the great Mughal ruler. If Mughals would not have ruled over this beautiful city then Ahmedabad had never have been called as ‘Manchester of India’. It was the period of Mughal rule only when the textile industry was getting acknowledged and the trade was paramount. Under the rule of Jahangir, Akbar’s son, the city even exported overseas.

However, it was Jahangir only who mocked this place as garbage ground and titled this city as Gardabad- the city of dust. The idea of constructing Moti Shahi Mahal standing tall in the city was fabricated by this popular Mughal ruler only.

The Mighty Maratha

An archenemy to the Mughals and an essential part of the rich history of Ahmedabad, The Maratha was a huge empire that transformed the city drastically. Undoubtedly, Maratha kings were the only ones who stood as a stone in the way of Mughals to take complete control in India. Damaji Gaekwad and Raghunath Rao were the two great Maratha rulers who snatched the city from the Mughal chains and declared it as their terrain.

Unfortunately, the internal disputes among the Marathas reached south and resulted in an all-out battle that brought fire and brimstone to this city. In fact, the entire city was destroyed and devastated by this mutiny. One can witness the influence of Marathi culture in the city by exploring the historical lineage.

The British era of wine and roses

If you go through Indian history then you will get to know that the British took command of this city in the year 1818. It was the time when soldiers were appointed, the order was established, a government was built and in simple words, we can say that they were trying to reconstruct Ahmedabad. Railway lines were also established during British rule and the invention of the rail route opened up huge possibilities to endless opportunities. This is how the city started exporting textiles to other cities and overseas.

There is nothing to deny the fact that every empire that rises comes to fall gradually and the same happened with the British kingdom also. After ruling over the city for many years, their empire came to an end and a new government was formed.

An essence of independence

The art of Satyagraha was conceptualized and nurtured In Ahmedabad itself and later taught to the different parts of the country. The city is also home to some serious freedom fighters and leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi. The legendary Salt March was initiated from this place and there is a lot more to know about this palate.

In simple words, we can conclude that the city played its part flawlessly and ignited the fire of independence in every state. Post-Independence, the city was termed as a temporary part of Bombay. Later, on 1st May 1960, Ahmedabad was declared as part of Gujarat and entitled as the capital city. After a few years, Gandhinagar became the capital city of the state.

At present, this beautiful city in West India excels in many sectors and serves as a major holiday destination and it is home to several UNESCO Heritage Sites. There is no dearth of tourist attractions and we have presented articles associated with Ahmedabad tourism and if you are excited to read such travel-related articles then do follow us.

One of the largest cities in the country, Ahmedabad is believed to be the first UNESCO World Heritage city of the nation. This industrial city of Gujarat is reckoned for its warm hospitality and kind-hearted people and the locals here are very fond of eating. One can find a number of roadside food installments and world-class restaurants in the city.

The city is home to several parks, museums, educational institutions, temples, and happens to be a financial hub. This gastronomic paradise attracts thousands of travelers from all across the globe every year. Khakhra, Fafda, Thepla, Patra, Dalvada Undhiyo, Khaman- Dhokla, etc. are a few of the most popular heavy-sounding Gujju snacks and this list goes on. Gujarati people are ardent lovers of food and they never compromise with their taste buds.

We bring you a list of must-try delicacies when it comes to savor the most loved food items in Ahmedabad.

List of Most Delicious Food in Ahmedabad to Try

Indu Ben Ka Khakhra

Although you can find this mouth-watering snack at almost every roadside stall and restaurant the one that you find at Indu Ben Shop is incredible. Besides serving you this white crispy delicacy, the shop also offers you some other exciting snack options that are pretty hard to resist such as Fafdas, Namkeen, Papad, Khakhra, Chutney, and Mukhwas. The shop is famous among the locals and tourists for its spicy, delicious, and delicate preparations.

This is quite a simply prepared food item cooked with wheat flour, spices, salt, and edible oil. There are almost hundreds of varieties in Khakhra based on the spices you add to the wheat flour base, so select the variant of your choice and treat your taste bud with this relishing snack.

Asharfi Ni Kulfi

They claim themselves to be the ‘King of cool Kulfi’ and there is nothing to oppose their claim. This shop in Ahmedabad is quite famous for its mouth-watering and scrumptious Kulfis available in multiple flavors. Do binge on these delicious condensed milk frozen desserts to give a perfect finishing to your hearty meal. These delectable Kulfis are prepared with evaporated milk solids or Khoya and are then added with thickened milk. Flavors like nuts, cardamom, saffron, and sugar are used as toppings to add more flavor.

Samosa Pav

The list of Indian street food is always incomplete without Samosa, a deep-fried savory prepared with white flour, potato, onion, and other ingredients. This cone-shaped snack is usually served with two chutneys- sweet sauce and coriander chutney but I personally like to taste it with red chutney. Samosa Pav is a very quick and easily prepared snack by sandwiching scrumptious Samosa inside a Pav or bun and is served with tomato ketchup and spicy chutney.

The dash of cheese and spice-mix on both sides of the bun add more point to its flavor and makes it hard to resist even for a health-conscious individual.

Fafda Jalebi

A plate of the mouth-watering eatery was prepared using two different snack items- Fafda and Jalebi. This platter is generally enjoyed as a morning meal served with salad and green chilly. This famous breakfast item in Ahmedabad gives a perfect start to your day with a mix of sweet and spicy flavors to the taste buds. Fafda is cooked with gram flour and spice-mixed dough and then fried as chips like snacks.

Jalebi is prepared with all-purpose flour and gram flour batter which is then friend into rings and then dipped in tangy sugar syrup. Depending on your taste preference you can either one of them or club them together.

Dhokla

Dhokla, a steamed fluffy chickpea cake is a dish that comes to everyone’s mind when speaking of Gujarati cuisine. This light dish is prepared with chickpea flour, salt, sugar, spice, and a dash of baking soda to provide a soft and rising texture to the cake. Dhokla is both sweet and salty in taste and is served with red chilly chutney and green coriander chutney.

It is something that you must try on your holiday in Ahmedabad as you can get in anytime and anywhere. The best thing is that it is very mild on the tummy hence, no need to worry about improper Digestion.

Pani Puri or Golgappa

None of the celebrations in our country goes without tasting these crunchy balls of irresistible flavor and joy. The Puri of this snack looks like a ping pong ball and Pani means water added with different ingredients. The crunchy balls are first stuffed with smashed potatoes and sprouts and then filled with tangy and flavored water.

The tangy water is prepared with coriander leaves, Red Chilli Powder, Salt, Green Chilli, and tamarind juice. Put that stuffed crunchy ball infused filled with water into your mouth and enjoy the infusion of spicy stuffing and flavored water and enjoy the heavenly feeling.

Bhuna Gosht

Gujaratis are known for serving vegetarian dishes on their platter but if you are a non-vegetarian person then also you don’t need to worry as non-vegetarian delights are equally popular. Bhuna Gosht is one of the most liked and savored delicacies that is cooked in spicy gravy made of onions and tomatoes. The preparation of this spicy dish consists of small pieces of mutton and the juices of tomatoes and onions are mixed well with that of the mutton.

The lamb meat gets prepared in this juice and turns into a velvety-soft semi-dry gravy that is usually served with Paranthas and with plain white rice or biryani. Ahmedabad Bhuna Gosht is a must-try delicacy for all non-vegetarian food lovers.

Mutton Chaap

Mutton Chaap is another must-try non-vegetarian eatery that can be prepared in two variants fried dry snack or a gravy-rich dish served with roti/Paratha/ rice. Refrigerated mutton ribs in a marinade made of mace powder, ginger garlic paste, curd, and salt are used to prepare this lip-smacking delicacy. The prepared marinade is first taken in the fridge for almost 2 or more hours before being taken out to prepare the dish.

To achieve proper consistency of gravy, the chef and the locals add onions, tomatoes, and a proper amount of every spice.

Bhel Puri

This puffed rice snack is a delectable snack that is sometimes enjoyed as a mild dinner by the Amdavadis. This delicious snack gives out a variety of flavors such as spicy, tangy, and sweet. It tastes best when you have it just after it is served to you and this is why the vendors prepare Bhelpuri only after your order for it. The best thing is that it takes only two minutes to prepare this crispy, yummy, and lip-smacking Eatery.

Batata Poha

Also called Potato Poha, this yummy street food is cooked with flattened rice, ginger, chilly, onion, potato, and seasoning. Roasted peanuts, curry leaves, cumin, mustard, coriander leaves, and asafetida are used as a seasoning to prepare this delicacy. This is a simple yet very fulfilling dish offered in Ahmedabad. All the green vegetables and seasoning are sauteed along in the oil and then the soaked flattened rice is added to the mixture. Poha when blended well with the vegetables, spices, salt, and other ingredients offer an irresistible taste. One can enjoy this snack either with green chilly or with plain curd.

Loaded with variant flavors, textures, and spices, Ahmedabad street food is something that one must not miss on their trip to Ahmedabad. The aroma of the eateries prepared in the city is so generous and tempting that it becomes hard to resist even if you are not hungry. The list of must-try food items in Ahmedabad doesn’t end here and we have compiled only a few of them.

If you are excited to know about more such snacks or dishes then do share and like this post and motivate us to bring more such articles for you. We would also appreciate it if you take out a few minutes to share your valuable feedback with us.

The commercial hub of Gujarat and the seventh-largest city in the country, Ahmedabad is a cultural melting point. This business city of West India has attracted several business tycoons and trendsetters from the highly competitive sector that makes the city immensely investing, innovative, and evolving. The city is bedecked with several alluring tourist destinations like Sabarmati Ashram, Kankaria Lake, Hathee Singh Temple, Sarkhej Roza, etc.

Location

This ancient city lies beautifully on the western side of River Sabarmati and is encircled by a 10 km long wall. The exquisitely carved temples, crowded market areas, gigantic monuments, huge gates, and sub-terrain stepwell are some of the super alluring things that take Ahmedabad tourism a notch higher.

History

The history of the state owes its foundation to Sultan Ahmed Shah. There is an interesting legend stating that once while hunting the ruler encountered a warren of rabbits on the bank of River Sabarmati. Surprisingly, the rabbits turned aggressively on his hounds and protected their territory. Sultan Ahmed Shah considered this as an auspicious sign, so he decided to build this area as his new capital and named it Ahmedabad in his honor.

Ahmedabad has witnessed the kingdom of several rulers, starting with the ruler of the Sultanate in 1487. Later on, a military cantonment was established in the city under British rule and at the same time, the infrastructure of the city was expanded and modernized. The city emerged itself as a home of the booming textile industry and later earned the title ‘Manchester of India’.

What makes this city more significant and popular?

Gujarat is quite popular among travelers as the land of legends and Ahmedabad is no exception to this. Sabarmati Ashram, a wonderful ground established on the western bank of River Sabarmati had served as the second home to Mahatma Gandhi, the legendary leader and the father of the nation. Many of his personal belongings like spinning wheel, spectacles, etc. are well preserved in this ashram.

Sabarmati Ashram was considered to be the nerve center of several freedom movements of India such as non-violence, Swadeshi, and civil disobedience that laid the foundation of British Swaraj. The city has a sheer wealth of treasures in terms of both medieval castles and art collections. Calico Museum of textiles, Kite Museum, Vechaar Utensils Museum, Auto World Vintage Car Museum, and Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum are the places that surprise anyone with their beauty and historical significance.

Travel Tips for Ahmedabad

For those who are planning to explore the city of wonderful museums, imperial temples, and gorgeous lakes, we have enlisted some relevant and necessary tips. We truly believe that traveling to a new place is always hectic and unsafe and one needs to be very attentive and vigilant throughout the journey. Check out the below enlisted that will help you to ensure your safety and security at this new place. The tips and tricks listed below don’t only take care of your belongings but also ensure that you enjoy a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Things to Keep In Mind

The very first thing that you need to take care of is your bookings because you might not get the booking after reaching the city. Therefore, be wise and complete your ticket as well as hotel booking in advance especially if you are traveling to the city during the peak season.

Ahmedabad is a cultural city hence, you are strictly advised to respect the traditions and customs of the city. People of this city are known for their humble and kind nature and they expect their guests to be the same. Try not to use any vulgar or abusive words as it doesn’t sound good and can even put you in some trouble. This is why we advise you to obey the code of conduct defined by the locals and don’t perform any bad deeds.

No matter which place you are going to, you are always going to face forgery and you need to beware of them and ensure your safety and security from the crooks. Additionally, everyone in the city right from the porters to the rickshaw-pullers tries befooling you by extracting extra money from your pocket. They sometimes even misguide you to earn extra commission.

Maintain the decorum and ethnicity of the city, so don’t indulge yourself in any sort of unethical actions like disturbing the heritage buildings or monuments. Also, if you dare to do such acts then be ready to face the consequences as it is a punishable offense.

Take proper care of your health and select a genuine place to treat your taste buds with delectable delicacies. Try avoiding unhygienic food and other stuff and also avoid eating raw, processed, and uncooked food as this might disturb your stomach and hamper your trip.

Although there is no restriction on dressing style in Ahmedabad we would recommend you not to put on revealing clothes.

You are also advised to walk with a group rather than preferring to walk isolated. This is a very important thing to keep in mind from the safety aspects.

No matter which city you are traveling to in the country you are always going to face the problem of pickpockets. Hence, it is very important for you to take care of your belongings and cash and we also advise you not to carry a large amount of cash with you while traveling on public transport.

The city is home to several historical monuments and tourist places and many of them ask for an entry ticket. Don’t forget to play with the authority and you must buy the ticket or else if you are found exploring the site without a ticket then you are surely going to get severely punished.

Don’t hesitate to pay extra bugs for the safety of your belongings when you are visiting any tourist site as it is not safe to keep your valuables with you because pickpockets will always be having an eye on them. Also, do not keep the cash amount unevenly rather than keeping it in one place.

Best Time to Visit Ahmedabad

The Winter season is the most ideal time to plan your holiday in Ahmedabad as the weather is pretty pleasing and favorable at this time. So, you can enjoy indulging in outdoor activities and have glimpses of the mesmerizing sights of the city. If possible, try not to plan your vacation in Ahmedabad in the summer months as the city witnesses unfavorable climatic conditions and the scorching heat won’t let you enjoy the outdoor activities.

Somnath is not only the holiest shiva temple in India but is an architectural marvel. Built using fine carvings, finely detailed engravings and beautiful designs complete with images, paintings and sculptures of various gods and goddesses, this temple is more than a spiritual place. It is a complete experience for the mind, body and soul. Located right next to the crashing waves of the Arabian Sea and just next to the Somnath beach, this temple is filled with awe-inspiring experiences that will rejuvenate you from within. The entire temple complex is dotted with various interesting sights and vistas. For example, the evening sound and light show depicting the entire story about Somnath Mahadev Mandir is excellently shown and a must-visit for people with kids!

No matter how fascinating this place may seem, there are several things about the temple that remain interesting even till this day. Here are some other interesting facts about Somnath that you may or may not have known:

The Legend Of Floating Shivling

The original Shivling is believed to have been floating above the current spot where it sits. According to legends the philosopher’s stone or Syamantak Manik which is closely associated with Lord Krishna and is said to be hiding within the hollowness of the shivling. This magical stone is believed to have powers like producing gold, alchemy and radioactive capacity that has the ability to create a magnetic field which enabled the Shivling to float above the ground. The temple is worth visiting especially because of this fact.

Mention In Ancient Texts

The temple is so grand and ancient that you can find its mention in various holy Hindu texts like Skand Puran, Rig Veda, Shreemad Bhagavad Gita and Shiv Puran. This goes on to show that this site of Lord shiva worship has always attracted pilgrims and devotees from all over the world. This also proves that the actual construction of the temple remains unknown.

Was Always An Ancient Pilgrimage Site

The temple site of Somnath has always been an important place of shiva worship not just because of the temple but also because it is placed on a very holy spot. The temple is constructed near the confluence point of 3 holy rivers of Kapila, Hiran and the mythical river of Saraswati. This confluence is named as the Triveni Sangam which should not be confused with the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad. This Sangam is also said to be the place where lord soma or the moon god is said to have taken a bath and regained his lost Lustre making it all the more auspicious and holy.

The First Temple Was Constructed By The Moon God

Legend has it that the very first temple structure of Somnath was constructed by the moon god or Lord Som himself. He is also said to have constructed the temple with gold, while the sun god had contributed silver and Lord Krishna had provided sandalwood for construction purposes. All these contributions together creates a wonderful rhythm of spirituality, oneness and piousness.

No Straight Line Between The Temple And Antarctica

This is probably one of the most baffling facts of Somnath that cannot be ignored and in fact deserves some much-needed attention. The Baan Stambh or the arrow pillar near the temple and on the Somnath seashore stands tall on the Indian landmass. This pillar is in complete straight line from here to the Antarctica continent. There is no other piece of land or even an island in between them. It is appalling to know that this proves about the level of science and research that was done by the scholars of that era.

Temple Name Changes Every Time With The World Reconstructs

According to our reliable ancient books and historical accounts recorded in the holy text of Skand Puran, the name of Somnath Temple will change every time the world is re constructed. It is said that when lord brahma reconstructs the world after the destruction of the world we are currently in, Somnath’s temple’s name will change to Pran Nath Temple.

The Temple Has Suffered Numerous Destructions

Situated in Prabhas Patan of the Saurashtra region in Gujarat, the current temple occupies a prime location that has attracted numerous traders and rulers from all over the world. Due to this, the temple was the first thing that they saw and destroyed it any time a new ruler would invade and loot. Somnath has suffered destruction over 15 times and each time by a different ruler including Mahmud of Ghazni, Muzaffar Shah, Khilji’s Army and Aurangzeb among a plethora of others. However, each time it was reconstructed keeping the spirit of religion and spirituality alive.

Unique Temple Structure

The temple is primarily made of a main building along with another precinct. This means that there are several other small temples within the large temple complex or under the dome structure, much like an igloo. There are several different regions and parts to the temple that are very unique in their own way and will make for a great day out with the family full of spirituality and fun.

It Had Million Dollar Worth Of Wealth

During the peak of Somnath mandir’s popularity, it had several million worth of gold, jewels and other precious treasure. Sadly, these were looted by the robbers and rulers who would rob the place and leave the temple with nothing.

Proclamation Of The Gates By The British

When the British troops were ordered to come back from Afghanistan, they were instructed to bring back the sandalwood Somnath gate that was taken away by Mahmud of Ghazni. On their way back, as a sign of triumph, they carried back the gates to Gujarat, however, this gate was a fake one and was in fact made out of deodar and not sandalwood. The fake gate is now stored in the basement storage of Agra fort where you can go and check it out.

These were the 10 popular and not so popular interesting facts about the holy Somnath Mahadev Mandir. There are several other things that continue to baffle historians, archeologists and devotees alike.

Eating and food is one thing you should not be worried about when in Somnath, Gujarat. There are several restaurants and dhabas available that make quality and fresh vegetarian food. You should definitely try out the local Gujarati delicacies and cuisines. Be sure not to sit back and relax at one of the many local tea stalls.

Safety Tips

Gujarat is one of the safest states in India to travel alone or with family and friends. The people are helpful and will provide help anytime you need it. Taxi-cab services like ola and uber are also available in almost any part of Gujarat. You can depend on google maps for directions and also remember that the crime rate in Ahmedabad or Gujarat as a whole is not high.

What To Wear

The time of the year is not important in deciding what to wear during your holiday in Gujarat. The weather remains pleasant and cool throughout the year. Remember to wear cotton clothes for extra breathability and always wear good quality sneakers for a more comfort filled travel. This is also important to keep in mind because you will mostly be walking around and you can cover more places this way.

Extra Travel Tips

While planning on hiring a guide for yourself then make sure to check out their government licensing. This is important to weed out the scam guides with the real one and checking their government licensing is the only way to do it. Also, remember to carry an extra phone with a SIM card that you can get there so that you are always connected and in touch with your family and loved ones.

Somnath Mahadev is a spiritual epicenter of religion and spirituality. It is a place where pilgrims and devotees have been making their way over the years as a part of their pilgrimage. The temple draws huge attention from devotees since it is dedicated to lord shiva and is built on the spot where the first jyotirlinga had appeared on its own. The temple is famous for a variety of reasons, one of them being that it is an architectural masterpiece.

Located on the banks of the crashing waves of the Grand Arabian sea, the temple is a fascinating holy shrine whose history dates back to ages ago. To get the best experience it is important to know the right time to go. Planning beforehand will allow you to have a holiday filled with memorable moments.

Here is the complete info on the weather conditions and the best time to visit Somnath:

Best Time to Visit

Somnath is situated in the westernmost part of India. The weather here remains predominantly warm and cool. It never gets freezing cold. It is best to avoid travel plans to Somnath during the scorching summer months of April to August. The best time to visit Somnath has to be during the autumn-winter months that last from September to march. The weather remains cool, not too hot in the afternoon that makes you travel to a number of different tourist sightseeing places. It Would be fun to travel with the family during this time of the year.

Prot Tip: Plan a trip to the Rann Utsav during the full moon time. You will see the white salt desert gimmer like diamonds in the moonlit night.

Now let’s take a look at the general weather conditions of Somnath to give more insight into the climate conditions:

Somnath In Summer

The months of April to June mark the months of summer in Somnath. This is also the time when a lot of people plan a summer vacation. Going to Somnath in summer will meet you with a huge throng of travelers, devotees, and pilgrims from all over the globe. It is not an ideal time to visit Somnath because the weather will seem like too much. However, if you still want to visit it then be well prepared beforehand and keep yourself hydrated throughout. If you wish to relax after a tiring day then this would also be the perfect time to spend a fun evening at Kankaria Lake. The temperature stays between 24 to 42-degree Celsius so be mentally prepared.

Somnath In Winter

September to March marks the winter months in Somnath. This is also one of the best times of the year to go out exploring in places other than Somnath. With the temperature ranging between 10 to 24-degree Celsius these months are the best time to visit Somnath as well. Apart from the spiritual aspect, you can also get the right dose of adventure by going on nature hikes and treks to the nearby trails and mountain destinations. This is also one of the peak times for visitors to flock to Somnath. These are also the months when most festivals also take place. February is the time when Somnath Mahadev Mandir sparkles up to life during the Maha Shivratri celebrations which is also another one of the major attractions of this spiritual holiday to Somnath.

Somnath In Monsoon

July and August are the 2 monsoon months in Somnath. This region defines the monsoon season at its best because of the torrential heavy rains. Just like the extreme summer, monsoon is equally extreme. During these months Somnath receives heavy rainfall throughout making it extremely difficult to go out, explore and check out the beautiful Somnath Mandir. In Fact, the entire Indian landmass gets engulfed in monsoon rains but monsoon in Somnath is a whole different story in a matter of viciousness. The entire region also remains doused in lots of humidity making traveling extremely uncomfortable. On bad monsoon days, these vicious rainfall winds can even turn into destructive cyclones. This is not the right time to visit Somnath with your family and loved ones if you are looking for a tension-free memorable experience.

Travel Tips for Safe Travels in Somnath

If travelling during the summer months then make sure to wear comfortable clothing made preferably out of cotton material. Also, remember to wear good sneakers as you will be walking around a lot in Somnath. Also keep a bottle of water, sunscreen, and a cap for extra protection against the strong and blazing sun.

Make your booking beforehand in order to avoid any delay or inconvenience. Somnath is one of the most popular pilgrimages and spiritual holiday destinations. During the peak tourism months, the bookings are all sold out so you need to complete your bookings way beforehand if you want to have a hassle-free holiday.

Know the opening and closing time of Somnath Temple for a more enriching experience. The temple opens at 6 am and shuts down at 9:30 pm. The sound and light show is a must-have experience that takes place in the evening and it also tells you about the amazing and very enigmatic history of Somnath.

Do not miss out on visiting some nearby sightseeing tourist places like Triveni Sangam, Gita Mandir, Gir National Park, and Lakshmi Narayan Mandir. To relax you can head on to the nearby Somnath Beach to freshen up.

Somnath mandir is every devout Hindu’s dream destination. Gracing majestically the banks of Arabian Sea, Somnath Mahadev temple is an architectural marvel. People from all over the world make time to pay a visit to this temple that has been through a very rough and turbulent past. The temple is dedicated to lord shiva and was made by the moon god or Somnath, after whom the temple is named. It is believed that the temple is built on the very first of the 12 jyotirlingas found across India.

The temple is host to numerous festivals, fairs, gatherings and spiritual events throughout the year. If you are planning a visit to Gujarat or just looking for places to visit in Gujarat, then Somnath Mahadev should be on your travel list.

Wondering how to get to Somnath? Here is a complete guide from railway, roadway and flight.

Road trips are the best way to travel. If you have a private vehicle and wish to have a unique and memorable holiday? Then pack up and head on to Gujarat. The temple of Somnath is connected through a network of roadways. If road travel is your plan, then you can even choose to travel by buses or shared transportation that connect various big and small towns. If you are travelling from outside Gujarat, you will easily be able to reach Somnath Mahadev Temple just by following google maps.

If you are planning to travel by bus then that won’t be an issue either. In fact, it would prove to be more pocket friendly than renting a taxi minus the comfort. Somnath is connected to various bus services from all the nearby towns like Ahmedabad, Rajkot or Porbandar. There are Ac, non-AC and luxury buses available from anywhere in Gujarat and Diu to Somnath. The roads are all well-made and in good condition.

By Train

Travelling anywhere in India by train is a very cheap bargain. India has one of the longest and complicated train networks in the world. The tickets are cheap although it does take time but if you are travelling on a budget and time is not a constraint then train journeys is a great mode to opt for. Gujarat, being one of the most developed states in India, is connected to almost all the major and minor cities, towns and states all around. You can easily find trains to Gujarat from Delhi, Punjab or Uttar Pradesh. The railway stations of Surat, Vadodara, Veraval, Porbandar and Vadodara are some of the busiest railway stations of Gujarat.

Veraval Railway station is the nearest station to Somnath. This station is also very well connected to places like Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Loathed at a distance of just 5 kms from Somnath this station also caters to daily trains going to and fro various major and minor cities of India.

By Flight

If budget is not a problem for you, air travel can be your best friend. If you have limited time for holiday in Gujarat and if you are travelling with family, then going there by flight is the most convenient way of getting there. Being a huge state with top-notch facilities, Gujarat has a number of flights connecting various parts of India and some parts of the world as well. Somnath doesn’t have an airport itself. But is well connected to multiple big and small cities with the help of aerodromes at Diu, the union territory of Daman and Diu. however, there is just 1 flight operated by Air India Regional. As mentioned earlier Somnath is connected via multiple big and small airports. Porbandar airport is 120 kms away while the Rajkot civil airport is 160 kms away. You can get a cab or a taxi service from any of these airports leading up to Somnath.

Somnath is the 1st shiva jyotirlinga out of 12 that is spread all across the Indian subcontinent. Located in Gujarat this temple is a true testament to the sheer hard work and persistent ambition to honor Indian culture. Having been through an extremely tumultuous past with several loots and plunders, today Somnath stands tall by the crashing waves of the Arabian Sea, as one of the most exquisite and pious places of Shiva worship.

The Mythology of Somnath Temple

The light and sound show that is featured during the nighttime tells the spiritual and mythological background of this majestic pilgrimage place. The term som translates into the moon, meaning the temple is dedicated to the moon lord. The moon lord himself had prayed to lord shiva at the very place where the temple stands now. The story starts off with the moon being married to 27 of Raja Daksha’s daughters. Instead of giving his time equally to all his wives, he devoted most of his time to just one wife – Rohini. This made the father, Daksh, very angry. He cursed the moon that it would lose all its glowing lustre and would fade away. Sadly, the moon started fading away.

A worried moon made its way to this spot in Somnath along with Rohini and started praying to lord shiva. Happy with his dedication and devotion the Lord freed him from the curse. The moon then took a dip in the holy Saraswati River which revived his faded glow and lustre. The first temple structure was built by the moon god himself who had dedicated it to lord shiva.

History of Somnath Temple

There is no exact date for the construction of the very first structure of Somnath temple. The earliest history of this 1st Shiva Jyotirlinga dates back to 649 CE during the reign of the Yadava kings i.e. the Vallabh is. This was destroyed by the Arab governor of Sindh during his invasions in Rajasthan and Gujarat. He broke the jyotirlinga and took away 20 million dinars. Another plundering took place in 1299 by Alauddin Khilji’s army led by Ulugh Khan. The temple was again built in 1308 before getting destroyed once again during the late 14th century. In 1665 Mughal emperor Aurangzeb demolished the temple and passed the law that if Hindus tried to erect it again, it should be demolished completely. During 1950-51 the temple was rebuilt (current structure) due to the efforts made by Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi.

What to Expect?

The temple is covered all over with fresh, bright flowers among other gold and silver ornaments. This gives a very traditional, spiritual, and holy vibe to the whole complex. This is also done keeping in mind the legend related to the temple. Som or the moon god built the temple using gold, later on, Ravan built it by silver and Lord Krishna built the temple by wood. Every feature symbolizes some aspect of our rich cultural heritage. Going there in the evening time will make you see one of the most pretty and positivity evoking evening aarti. Also, deeply peaceful prayers keep on happening throughout the day. You can see some pictures of lord Somnath inside the temple adorning the walls.

The Current Somnath temple was built over a duration of 5 years from 1947 to 1951. After its completion, it was inaugurated by the then president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

A famous special stone that is associated with Lord Krishna, called Syamantaka Mani, or the philosopher’s stone has been kept in the hollowness of the Shivling.
