Best Time to Visit Ayodhya

Peak Season: October to March

Typical temperature: about 10°C to 25°C

October to March are the best months to travel to Ayodhya. During this time you can explore Ayodhya's famous temples and sacred places comfortably. The weather stays pleasant for sightseeing and walking along the Ghats. Outdoor activities like boating on the Sarayu are also enjoyable.

Summer: April to June

Afternoons can cross 40°C

Summer is not a favourable season to explore Ayodhya. The day's heat can be exhausting, especially for senior citizens and children. If you do visit in April, keep temple visits to the early morning and the evening.

Monsoon: July to September

Warm, with high humidity

Heavy rains from July to September can disrupt sightseeing plans and boat rides on the Sarayu River. Ghat steps become slippery, so take care near the water. This is the least convenient season to travel unless you are visiting for Sawan (Shravan) religious observances.

Upcoming Festival Dates

Festival Date Advance Booking Required
Ayodhya Deepotsav 6 November 2026 2 to 3 months prior
Diwali 8 November 2026 2 to 3 months prior
Parikrama Mela / Kartik Purnima 24 November 2026 1 to 2 months prior
Ram Navami (Lord Rama's Birthday) 15 April 2027 2 to 3 months prior

Note: During Ram Navami and Deepotsav, Ayodhya attracts lakhs of additional visitors. Hotel prices rise and availability drops quickly. Book well in advance for festival travel. The Deepotsav date is as listed by Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism's portal. Festival dates follow the lunar calendar, so confirm them before booking.

Places to Visit in Ayodhya

Ayodhya is revered by Hindus as the birthplace of Lord Rama. These are the main places covered in an Ayodhya holiday package:

Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir (Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra)

  • This is the most important place in Ayodhya and the main reason millions visit every year. The temple was consecrated on 22 January 2024 after decades of anticipation, and the Ram Darbar on the first floor opened to devotees in June 2025.

  • As the name suggests, this is the place where Lord Rama was born as per Hindu scripture. The temple is built in the Nagara style using pink Rajasthani sandstone and houses the idol of Ram Lalla (infant Rama) in the main sanctum.

  • Weekday mornings are usually less crowded than weekends and festival days. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust states that it does not charge any fee for Darshan or Aarti passes.

Hanuman Garhi

  • Reached by a flight of 76 steps, Hanuman Garhi is a prominent Lord Hanuman temple about 1 km from Ayodhya railway station. It is customary in Ayodhya to seek Hanuman ji's blessings here before visiting Ram Janmabhoomi.

  • Devotees commonly offer Ladoo Prasad, easily available from vendors outside.

Kanak Bhawan

  • This temple, also known locally as 'Sone Ka Ghar' (House of Gold), is believed to have been gifted to Goddess Sita by Queen Kaikeyi as a wedding present.

  • Devotees love the golden-crowned idols of Lord Rama and Sita, and the carvings on the temple walls.

Dashrath Mahal

Believed to be the palace of King Dashrath, father of Lord Rama, Dashrath Mahal has a colourful entrance, idols of Ram, Sita, and Lakshmana, and daily Aarti and Bhajans. Located close to Ram Janmabhoomi, it fits into any Ayodhya Darshan plan.

Nageshwarnath Temple

One of Ayodhya's oldest temples, Nageshwarnath stands at Ram Ki Paidi. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been established by Kush, the son of Lord Rama. The Ayodhya district website records that the present temple was built in 1750 by Naval Rai, a minister of Safdar Jung. It draws large crowds on Shivratri.

Ram Ki Paidi (Sarayu Ghat)

Ram Ki Paidi is the main Ghat complex on the Sarayu riverfront and the centre of Ayodhya's evenings. The Sarayu Aarti here, with lamps, conch shells, and devotional chanting, takes place every evening. At Deepotsav on 19 October 2025, 26,17,215 oil lamps were lit in Ayodhya, a Guinness World Record.

Guptar Ghat

Guptar Ghat is where Lord Rama is believed to have taken Jal Samadhi, leaving his earthly form and ascending to Vaikuntha through the sacred Sarayu waters. Temples surround the Ghat, and the atmosphere is calm, especially at sunrise.

Bharat Kund

Located at Nandigram, outside the main city, Bharat Kund is where Bharat, Lord Rama's brother, is believed to have performed penance for the 14 years of Rama's exile. The Kund (sacred tank) here is considered holy.

Treta Ke Thakur

This temple is believed to stand where Lord Rama performed the Ashwamedha Yagna. The idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman here are carved from black sandstone, a look not found in other Ayodhya temples.

Mani Parvat

Mani Parvat is a sacred hillock in Ayodhya. It is believed that as Lord Hanuman flew with the Sanjeevani hill from the Himalayas to revive Lakshmana, a part of it fell here. The top gives a good view of the city.

Sita Ki Rasoi

Sita Ki Rasoi, near Ram Janmabhoomi, is believed to be the kitchen where Goddess Sita cooked after her marriage with Lord Rama. The site houses idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Bharat, and Shatrughan.

Tulsi Smarak Bhawan and Ram Katha Museum

Tulsi Smarak Bhawan is a memorial to the poet-saint Tulsidas, the author of Ramcharitmanas, where recitals of the Ramayana and cultural events are held. The Ram Katha Museum houses manuscripts, artefacts, and paintings related to the Ramayana and takes about 1 to 2 hours to see.

Gulab Bari

Gulab Bari is an 18th-century mausoleum and garden complex of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, a piece of Nawabi-era history within a Hindu pilgrimage city. It is known for its rose gardens.

Things to Do in Ayodhya

Ayodhya is a sacred city centred on Lord Rama. While you are on your Ayodhya tour, make sure you do the following:

Attend Sarayu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi

Experience the evening Aarti on the banks of the Sarayu River, with recitation of hymns, lamps, and chanting. You can also attend the Mangala Aarti at Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir at 4:00 AM (free pass required, booked online on the Trust's website).

Take a Boat Ride on the Sarayu River

A boat ride on the Sarayu River is a relaxing way to see the ghats and temples from the water. The best time is early morning or evening.

Take a Holy Dip at the Sarayu River

A holy dip in the Sarayu River, particularly at Ram Ki Paidi or Guptar Ghat, is considered deeply auspicious. Pilgrims believe it cleanses sins and brings spiritual merit. The most sacred time is at sunrise.

Try Local Cuisine

Ayodhya, being a spiritual centre, offers a variety of vegetarian dishes you must try:

  • Kachori and Sabzi

  • Poori and Aloo Sabzi

  • Lassi and Thandai

  • Samosa and Chaat

  • Jalebi

  • Pedas and Besan Ladoo

Shop for Souvenirs

  • Local bazaars near the Ghats and temples have a wide variety of souvenirs and spiritual goods, including temple bells, brass items, Rudraksha beads, religious books, and Ramayana scriptures.

  • Best shopping areas: Ram Ki Paidi market, Chowk Bazaar, Kanak Bhawan Temple shops, Faizabad Main Market, and the Tulsi Smarak Bhawan market.

How to Reach Ayodhya

By Air

Ayodhya now has its own airport: Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ), about 8 km south of Ayodhya Dham Junction railway station, as per the Airports Authority of India. Direct flights connect Ayodhya to Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad, and Mumbai travellers currently fly from Navi Mumbai airport. Flight routes change often, so check with the airline. Lucknow Airport (LKO), about 130 km away, is an alternative with wider connectivity. Our packages include airport pickup.

By Train

Ayodhya Dham Junction is the main railway station, recently upgraded and about 1 km from Hanuman Garhi. Ayodhya Cantt is the second station. There are direct trains from Delhi (Vande Bharat, Ayodhya Express), Mumbai, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Prayagraj. Electric auto-rickshaws and e-cabs are available outside the station.

By Road

Ayodhya is connected via NH-27. Regular buses and cabs are available from Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Gorakhpur. Note: private vehicles are not permitted near the Ram Janmabhoomi complex. E-rickshaws and walking are the only options within the temple zone.

From Approx. road distance Approx. travel time
Lucknow 130 km 2.5 to 3 hrs
Gorakhpur 140 km About 3 hrs
Prayagraj 160 km About 4 hrs
Varanasi 200 km About 4.5 hrs
Delhi 636 km 10 to 11 hrs

Distances are approximate figures from the Ayodhya district administration, and the actual distance depends on your starting point and route. If you are booking an Ayodhya tour package from Delhi, the flight or train is more practical than the drive. From Lucknow and Varanasi, the road journey works well.
