The best beaches on Koh Phangan can be found on the island's north and north-eastern sides. The quiet, secluded bays to the north east are simply described as paradise, while the northern beaches are exposed to the Gulf of Thailand's seas.
The name Ko Pha-Ngan is derived from the word "ngan," which means "sand bar" in southern Thai, because there are numerous sand bars offshore. Ko Pha-Ngan has long been a favourite of Thailand's kings. During his reign, Rama V, or Chulalongkorn, visited Ko Pha-Ngan 14 times.
Plan your trip with many stops, there are so many interesting places to visit on Koh Phangan that the hardest part will be stopping yourself. It's very simple to walk one hour to a location, chill and relax for a while, then walk another hour or more to another location.
The best time to visit Koh Phangan is during the high season, which runs from early December to early March. The weather is cool and comfortable during this time of year, with lower daytime temperatures, humidity, and rainfall than the rest of the year.
A typical Thai meal consists of five flavours: salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy. Most Thai dishes are not considered satisfying unless they include all five. While the seasoning can be spicy for a foreign palate, Thai food ensures that all flavours are balanced.
