Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameshwaram
Visit Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameshwaram, a revered spiritual site featured in the scheduled sightseeing programme.
The Madurai Rameshwaram tour is one of Tamil Nadu's most rewarding pilgrimage and sightseeing circuits. Four days. Two cities. And more sacred sites, living legends, and coastal beauty than most people expect. The journey starts in Madurai — home to the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India's grandest Dravidian temples with over 33,000 sculpted figures. From there you travel to Rameshwaram, the sacred island city where the Ramanathaswamy Temple — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas — stands at the edge of the sea. This is where Lord Rama himself is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva before crossing to Lanka.
Apart from temple Darshan, you'll explore the iconic Pamban Bridge with its spectacular sea views, the haunting ruins of Dhanushkodi, and the birthplace of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Thousands of pilgrims and families have trusted Namaste India Trip for a smooth, guided experience here — and we make sure you don't miss a single important stop.

Madurai is one of India's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with a history stretching back over 2,500 years. It is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and the second largest city in the state. The city revolves around the Meenakshi Amman Temple at its literal centre — the city's streets were laid out in concentric squares around the temple.
For pilgrims, Madurai offers the Meenakshi Amman Temple, the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple (one of Murugan's six sacred abodes), and the Koodal Azhagar Temple (one of the 108 Divya Desams). For those interested in history, the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace and the Gandhi Museum add depth. And Madurai's food — particularly the Jigarthanda cold drink and the famous mutton biryani — is a destination in itself.
Rameshwaram is situated on Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar, connected to mainland Tamil Nadu by the Pamban Bridge. It is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism — a place where Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva before crossing the sea to Lanka to rescue Goddess Sita.
The Ramanathaswamy Temple here is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and part of the all-India Char Dham pilgrimage (the four dhams being Badrinath in the north, Dwarka in the west, Puri in the east, and Rameshwaram in the south). The temple's corridor is 1,212 metres long — the longest temple corridor in the world. The Theertham Snanam ritual, involving 22 sacred wells inside the temple, is unique to Rameshwaram and forms the spiritual centrepiece of the visit.

We booked this for my parents anniversary and honestly it turned out better than expected. The drive from Madurai to Rameshwaram was smooth, the ride was clean and comfortable for the four of us. Ramanathaswamy temple left everyone speechless, the long corridors and the twenty two wells ritual was something my mother still talks about. Dhanushkodi in the evening with that stretch of sea on both sides was surreal, though the road there gets bumpy near the end. Food options near Dhanushkodi are limited so we carried snacks. Overall a peaceful, well organised trip.
Bahut hi accha experience raha overall. Madurai se Rameshwaram ka safar thoda lamba tha but comfortable rahaa, gaadi clean thi aur AC bhi thik se chal raha tha. Meenakshi temple ki architecture dekh kar hum log dang reh gaye, itni detailing kaise ki hogi itne saal pehle. Rameshwaram mein temple ka darshan bhi smooth raha, zyada bheed nahi thi jab hum gaye. Dhanushkodi jaake laga jaise duniya ke kinare pe khade hain. Bas ek din weather thoda humid tha varna sab kuch perfect tha.
My husband and I took this trip for our tenth anniversary and it exceeded expectations honestly. Four days felt complete, not too rushed, not too slow. Madurai's Meenakshi Amman temple in the evening with the lamps lit was magical, we spent almost two hours just walking around. The drive to Rameshwaram along the coast was scenic with the sea appearing every now and then. Dhanushkodi beach at sunset is now one of our favourite memories together.
Travelled with my daughter and her kids, three generations together, and this package made it easy for everyone. Kids loved the boat like feel of standing at Dhanushkodi with water on both sides while the temple visits gave us elders the spiritual peace we were looking for. Meenakshi temple's colourful gopuram is something photographs never do justice to. The stay in Rameshwaram was clean and close to the temple which helped with early morning darshan. A memorable family trip.

This was our honeymoon trip and we chose a spiritual destination on purpose. Rameshwaram gave us that quiet, reflective vibe we wanted away from typical honeymoon spots. Sitting by the shore at Dhanushkodi in the evening, watching the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean meet, was one of the calmest moments of our trip. Madurai's night market near the temple had great local snacks including some really good jigarthanda. Weather was warm but the sea breeze made evenings pleasant.
Ek dum yaadgar trip raha yeh humare liye. Meenakshi temple ki shaam ki aarti dekhna ek alag hi anubhav tha, itni bheed ke baad bhi sab kuch shanti se ho gaya. Rameshwaram jaate waqt raaste mein samundar dikhna shuru hota hai jo bahut hi sukoon deta hai. Dhanushkodi mein wo tuta hua railway station dekh kar 1964 wale toofan ki kahani yaad aa gayi jo humein wahan bataya gaya. Thoda humid tha lekin overall trip bahut hi peaceful aur well planned thi.
My mother has wanted to visit Rameshwaram for years and we finally managed it together. Watching her do the ritual bath at the various theerthams inside the temple was emotional for me, she has spoken about this pilgrimage since I was a child. Madurai's Meenakshi temple was equally overwhelming with its scale and history. Dhanushkodi's abandoned buildings still standing after all these decades tell their own quiet story. A trip that meant a lot to our family.
Traveled with my husband and in laws, four of us in total, and everything about this trip felt smooth. The car provided was spacious enough for all our luggage plus us. Ramanathaswamy temple corridors with those pillars stretching endlessly left my father in law amazed, he kept saying he had never seen anything like it. Dhanushkodi in the late afternoon light was beautiful, sea on either side as far as the eye could see. Only small issue was patchy mobile network near Dhanushkodi but that is expected given how remote it is.
Being from Tamil Nadu I have visited Rameshwaram before but this was my first time seeing Dhanushkodi properly and it changed how I think about the place. The mix of history, the 1964 cyclone story, and the natural beauty of two seas meeting made it unforgettable. Madurai's temple as always did not disappoint with its evening rituals. Food throughout the trip was authentic and reasonably priced. A trip I would happily repeat with out of town relatives visiting.
My father is eighty two and this was possibly his last big pilgrimage trip and I am so glad we chose this package. Everything was paced for someone his age, no long walks without breaks and the car came right up close to entry points wherever possible. Seeing him do his prayers at Ramanathaswamy temple was a moment I will remember forever. Dhanushkodi's flat open landscape was also easy for him to walk around despite his knees. A trip filled with gratitude.
Came down south for the first time with my sister and this trip made a wonderful first impression of Tamil Nadu. Madurai's Meenakshi temple with its thousand pillar hall left us in awe, we kept losing track of time just walking through it. Rameshwaram was calmer and more spiritual in feel, the sea right next to the temple town gives it a unique atmosphere. Dhanushkodi felt like the edge of the world in the best way possible. Would visit again in winter for cooler weather.
This trip gave us exactly the mix of pilgrimage and scenery we were hoping for. Madurai's temple in the early evening with its lit up gopurams was stunning, we spent a good hour just admiring the carvings. The road to Rameshwaram passing over the sea near Pamban was one of the most scenic stretches I have driven through in India. Dhanushkodi's quiet beaches and the story behind the abandoned town added real depth to the visit. Food throughout was fresh, mostly rice based meals with good regional flavour. A trip I would gladly do again.
Solo trip and I wanted something spiritual without too much running around. This package gave me exactly that pace. Two full days felt just right, Rameshwaram temple in the early morning had barely any crowd and the priest explained the significance of Agni Theertham before the temple visit which I appreciated. Dhanushkodi was the highlight, standing where two seas meet is hard to describe in words. Would recommend to anyone travelling alone.
Practical review here. Distances mentioned matched actual travel time, Madurai to Rameshwaram took a little over three and a half hours with one stop. Vehicle was a sedan, comfortable for two people. Ramanathaswamy temple has a strict dress code, mundu was mandatory for men which I did not know beforehand so make sure to check that. Dhanushkodi ghost town area has an eerie beauty to it, worth the extra drive. Only complaint is the last day felt a bit packed before departure.
Went with three college friends for a quick getaway before joining our new jobs. The pace of four days three nights was perfect, not too tiring. Pamban bridge is a sight in itself. Dhanushkodi felt like something out of a movie, the vast stretch of sand and calm water. We stayed slightly out of town in Rameshwaram which meant a short drive each time but the room quality made up for it. Good trip for friends looking for something different from the usual beach holiday.
Detailed review since I like to plan ahead for future trips. Day one covered the drive and check in with some evening time free, day two was fully dedicated to Rameshwaram temple and Dhanushkodi, day three was the return drive to Madurai with Meenakshi temple visit, day four was departure. This structure worked well and left no day wasted. The vehicle used was well maintained throughout. Weather in March was warm during the day but manageable with an early start each morning.
We travelled during the hotter months so evenings were far more pleasant than afternoons for sightseeing. Dhanushkodi at dusk had a lovely golden light over the water which made for some of our best photographs. Rameshwaram temple's scale surprised me, I had not expected such long corridors. The return drive to Madurai on day three was long but broken up nicely with a stop for lunch. A well thought out itinerary for anyone wanting a proper pilgrimage experience without feeling rushed.
Long way to travel from the northeast but worth it for this trip. The four day structure gave enough time without feeling stretched. Rameshwaram temple visit early in the morning meant cooler weather and shorter queues. Dhanushkodi's shallow waters were fun to walk into a little, kids in our group enjoyed that part the most. One evening the hotel air conditioning was not working properly but it got fixed by the next morning. Overall a trip worth recommending to friends back home.
As a senior citizen travelling with my wife, comfort was our main concern and this package handled it well. The pace was not rushed, we had enough time to rest between sightseeing. Pamban bridge view on the way to Dhanushkodi was something we had only seen in photos before, seeing it in person was special. The hotel in Rameshwaram was decent though the room service was a bit slow one evening. Local seafood thali near the coast was fresh and tasty. Good trip for elderly travellers.
Trip was good overall, temple visits were the main draw for us. Rameshwaram temple corridor is genuinely impressive, longest I have seen in any temple across India. Dhanushkodi visit was arranged in a separate jeep since regular cars are not allowed on that stretch, which we were not told earlier so came as a bit of a surprise. Food was simple, mostly South Indian thalis which my family enjoyed. Weather was hot during the day so carrying water bottles helped a lot. Would go again in a cooler season.
Simple and honest trip, nothing overly fancy but did the job well. We are hill people so the coastal heat took some adjusting but by day two we were used to it. Dhanushkodi visit needed an early start to avoid the worst of the sun which our itinerary luckily allowed for. Meenakshi temple in Madurai is genuinely one of the most impressive structures I have seen anywhere in India. Hotel rooms were clean though slightly small for a family of four.
Fairly good trip overall though I felt day two could have had a bit more breathing room between the temple visit and Dhanushkodi excursion. That said, both places individually were worth the visit. The vehicle arrived on time every single day which I appreciated given some past experiences with other trips. Local food, particularly the fish curry near the coast, was a highlight for me personally. Weather was humid but bearable with regular water breaks.
Trip simple aayirunnu, athukondu reviewum short aayi parayam. Madurai-ilum Rameshwaram-ilum temple visits nalla coverage kitti, timings okke mostly follow cheythath kond long waiting undayilla. Dhanushkodi afternoon poyath kond choodu kurachu kooduthal aayirunnu, morning time aayirunnenkil better experience aayene. Hotel food average aayirunnu, valiya special onnum illa, but kazhikan pattatha reethiyilum alla. Overall package price nokkiyal okay aanu, but foodum sightseeing timingsum kurachu improve cheythirunnenkil trip kooduthal comfortable aayene.
Coming from Rajasthan, the humidity was difficult to adjust to, and overall the trip was more tiring than I expected. Temple visits were well timed and we did not have to rush, which was a good part. However, the Dhanushkodi visit needed a separate small vehicle for the last stretch, which added an unexpected extra cost for us. The food was quite different from what we are used to, especially the coconut-based curries, and although it was interesting to try, it was not really to our taste. We also felt the second day was packed and would have preferred some free time to rest at the hotel. Overall, the trip was manageable but not as comfortable or value-for-money as we expected.
Trip overall achha tha aur puri family ne enjoy kiya. Dhanushkodi jaake jab dono taraf paani dikhta hai, woh experience bachchon ko especially bahut pasand aaya. Rameshwaram temple mein early morning gaye the, isliye bheed kam thi aur darshan bhi aaram se ho gaya. Raaste mein fresh nariyal pani aur local seafood try kiya, dono tasty the. Bas dopahar mein weather kaafi garam tha aur Dhanushkodi mein thoda zyada time dhoop mein rehna pada, jiski wajah se thakan ho gayi. Overall trip achha raha, bas sightseeing ke beech thoda aur rest time hota to experience aur comfortable hota.
Four days are enough to visit all major temples, sightseeing spots, beaches, and nearby attractions in both Madurai and Rameshwaram while still having time to relax. If you plan to add Kanyakumari, allow 6 days total.
Yes. The itinerary, number of days, hotel category, and activities can all be customised. Common additions include Kanyakumari (2 extra days), Kodaikanal (1–2 extra days), or Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple (1 day). Contact us on WhatsApp to plan your specific tour.
October to March is the best time — weather is pleasant (22°C–32°C), ideal for sightseeing and temple visits. Summers (April–June) are hot but manageable if you plan early morning visits. Avoid the peak monsoon months for outdoor sightseeing.
Rameshwaram has a full range of options — budget guesthouses, mid-range hotels, beach resorts, and premium properties like the Daiwik Hotels and Hyatt Place. Our package covers standard, deluxe, and luxury categories, with 2 nights in Rameshwaram included.
The Rameswaram Express is one of the fastest train options and connects Chennai directly to Rameshwaram (approx. 10–12 hrs). From Madurai, it is 173 km by road (3–4 hrs). Our package includes all ground transport from Madurai Airport or Railway Station — no separate Rameshwaram travel booking needed.
Yes — Rameshwaram is one of the four Char Dhams of India: Badrinath (north), Dwarka (west), Puri (east), and Rameshwaram (south). This is distinct from the Chota Char Dham of Uttarakhand (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath). Rameshwaram is also one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of India.
Sphatik Linga (also called Mani Darshan) is a naturally formed crystal Shivlinga inside Ramanathaswamy Temple. It is believed to have been installed by Goddess Sita herself and is not man-made. The darshan is available only at 5:00 AM before general temple hours. Our 2-night Rameshwaram stay ensures you can attend this.
Theertham Snanam is the ritual of bathing in water drawn from all 22 sacred wells inside the temple corridors. Each well has a different name and is believed to have unique purifying properties. Temple priests pour water in sequence over pilgrims. The ritual takes about 1.5–2 hours. Carry a change of clothes — you will be fully drenched.
Photography is restricted inside both temples. Camera fees apply at permitted spots. Phones and cameras must be left at the token counter at Ramanathaswamy Temple. Check with the entrance staff on the day of visit for current rules — these are occasionally updated.
Madurai is famous for its Jigarthanda (a cold drink made with milk, almond gum, and ice cream — the original version is sold on West Masi Street near Meenakshi Temple), Madurai mutton biryani, and parotta-salna. Rameshwaram is predominantly vegetarian near the temple area — fresh seafood is available at local restaurants away from the temple zone. All hotels in our package serve South Indian breakfast.
No special permits are required for Madurai or Rameshwaram. Carry a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence) for hotel check-in. For senior citizens or anyone with health conditions, carry your prescription and a brief medical history card.
Free cancellations and amendments are available up to 7 days after booking confirmation. After that, a cancellation fee applies: 25–50% for cancellations 15–30 days before departure, no refund within 7 days of travel. No compensation for disruptions caused by weather, natural events, or temple closures. Full terms shared at booking.
