Lord Narayana (or Vishnu) is a Hindu deity revered as the world's protector and preserver, as well as the restorer of all things (moral order). He is best known through his avatars (incarnations), especially Rama and Krishna.
This ornately decorated temple with wooden sculptures is said to grant wishes. The massive golden statue of Nandi, Shiva's bull, is one of the temple's most impressive decorations. Only Hindus are permitted to enter the main temple, but all other buildings are open to the public.
According to one legend, Shiva and Parvati once visited the Bagmati River. They were so taken with the place that they decided to make it their home. They took the form of two deer and settled here.
Lord Shiva is revered as the Lord of Wisdom - Jnanam Maheshwarat Icchet. Only through Lord Shiva's grace can the Jiva be freed from the pasha or maya's bondage. As a result, the name Pashupati refers to the Lord who can deliver the Pashu from the clutches of the pasha and grant liberation.
