The perfect religious symbiosis of Buddhism as well as Hinduism, Muktinath Temple is the highest elevated temple in the world (nestled at an altitude of 3710 meters above the sea level). Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Muktinath Temple is reckoned as one of the most popular Vaishnava sites and also among 51 sacred Shakti Peeths. However, the temple is not so big and is average in height and it is adorned with a golden statue of Lord Vishnu and the idol is tall like average human height.
Apart from Shri Mukti Narayan idol, there are several other idols installed in the shrine and some images are also there to increase the beauty of this sacred shrine.
The temple also boasts of a Buddhist monk and it is seen that the puja rituals or worship performed here is done by Buddhist nuns. If we talk about the architecture of this gorgeous shrine then there is a semi-circular wall standing behind the wall and is studded with 108 stone faucets embedded at a height of 7 feet. These faucets are constructed at a gap of one foot and all of them are in the same shape i.e. the shape of the bullhead. The key attraction of these faucets is the gorgeously flowing water from the mouth of these bulls.
It is believed that Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism meditated here on his way to Tibet and this is why there is a small monastery named Mebar Lha Gomba dedicated to Rinpoche. There is a continuously burning natural gas fire worshipped by Hindus as they believe it to be Jwala Mai, the Goddess of Fire. If you are also a Hindu or Buddhist or inspired by the teachings of Lord Buddha then you must visit Muktinath and our Muktinath Yatra from Chennai will surely make it a worth visit.
