About the Chardham Circuit

The Chardham Yatra is a route that encompasses four holy temples located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The shrines are of immense religious importance and linked to the gods and goddesses of the origin of rivers.

1. Yamunotri Temple (3,293 meters)

Yamunotri is a spiritually rejuvenating place encircled with snow-capped mountains and thermal springs, and is the traditional starting point of the Yatra. The temple is reached by a trek of about 6 km from Janki Chatti.

2. Gangotri Temple (3,100 meters)

Gangotri, unlike Yamunotri, can be reached by road, so there is no trek. The temple rituals and the peaceful banks of the river create a devotional atmosphere.

3. Kedarnath Temple (about 3,580 meters)

Kedarnath is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva . No road reaches the temple. You drive to Sonprayag, take a shared jeep to Gaurikund, and walk about 16 km uphill from there.

4. Badrinath Temple (3,133 meters)

Badrinath is a pilgrimage devoted to Lord Vishnu and is approachable by road and provides a relaxing and well-organized pilgrimage experience.

Best Time to Visit

April - June (Summer)

• April to June is the most popular time for the Char Dham Yatra due to the moderate weather. Late April and early May can still be cold, with snow near Kedarnath and Yamunotri.
• On the downside, you will have to deal with large crowds, and you will have to pay premium rates everywhere. For Darshan at the shrines, there will be long lines.

July-August and up to mid-September (Monsoon Season)

• You should avoid the Char Dham Yatra during the monsoon, when heavy rain is common.
• There are also chances of landslides during this time of the year, resulting in delays and road blockages. On red-alert days, the government stops the Yatra.

Mid-September to October (Post-Monsoon)

• Pick this window if you want smaller crowds. Roads are usually repaired after the rains.
• Nights are cold, and a red alert can still stop the Yatra for a day or two.

November (Winter Season)

• Winter is not a good time to visit the Chardham sites due to the harsh weather conditions.
• The initial rush of pilgrims may be less, but heavy snowfall may make it difficult to access the shrines.
• The Chardham shrines close on or just after Diwali. Badrinath closes a few days after the others.

How to Reach Char Dham from Mumbai

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the main airport for the Chardham region . Non-stop flights from Mumbai to Dehradun operate on some schedules, so check with the airlines. Once you have reached Dehradun, you can board a bus or hire a taxi to reach the Chardham site’s starting point. You can also fly from Mumbai to Delhi, where this package starts.

By Train

A direct train is not available to Chardham. Rishikesh and Haridwar are the nearest railway stations. From Mumbai, the 12171 LTT to Haridwar AC Superfast Express (Monday and Thursday, about 29 hours) and the 19019 Bandra Terminus to Haridwar Express (daily, about 32 hours) run directly to Haridwar. Once you reach any of these destinations, you can board a bus or taxi to reach the Chardham site’s starting point.

By Road

• By road, you will have to first drive from Mumbai to Haridwar, covering a distance of around 1,650 km.
• The drive takes around 28 to 30 hours, so plan for at least two days. It can be done by bus or private car.
• Commercial vehicles need an Uttarakhand Green Card (trip card). If you drive your own car, check the latest rules on greencard.uk.gov.in.
• From Dehradun or Haridwar, you can join a tour group or book a taxi to continue your Yatra to the Char Dham sites.

Char Dham Yatra Registration 2026

According to the official Uttarakhand registration portal , every pilgrim and every vehicle must be registered before the Yatra, and registration is free. The portal’s FAQ allows registration for pilgrims aged 10 to 65; for anyone outside that range, call the helpline on 0135-3520100. You can register on the website, on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app, or at offline counters during the season. Keep the registration letter or QR code with you, because it is checked at each Dham. Kedarnath

• At Kedarnath, you will find basic accommodation options , including GMVN guest houses, Dharamshalas, and ashrams.
• You can plan your stay in nearby towns like Sonprayag and Guptkashi for better amenities.

Badrinath

• Badrinath has basic accommodations , including GMVN rest houses, budget-friendly hotels, and Dharamshalas.
• Nearby towns like Joshimath and Govindghat also offer good accommodation options.

Gangotri

Travel Tips for Pilgrims

• Chardham Yatra requires the pilgrims to be in good physical condition, as it includes a trek of about 6 km at Yamunotri and about 16 km at Kedarnath. At least one to two months before the Chardha m tour from Mumbai , you should begin doing cardio workouts such as swimming, cycling, or running. You should aim for a cardio workout of at least 30 minutes five days a week.
• Carry with you all the important numbers, including your doctor’s and your tour operator’s, for any emergency. You should keep the addresses of the nearest clinics or hospitals handy, as this will be very helpful in case of an emergency.
• Show respect to the traditions and customs of the local people. Follow all the customs during the time of rituals and prayers.

• Since April 2026, the temple committee (BKTC) does not allow mobile phones inside the Kedarnath temple premises. Lockers are provided near the temple, and photos are allowed only at a marked spot about 80 metres away.
• Carry enough cash, as ATMs are limited in the hills.
• Keep yourself hydrated and avoid undertaking the unknown routes while trekking.
