The temple has four gates, Singhadwara, Ashwadwara, Vyaghradwara and Hastidwara, named after four animals: lion, horse, tiger and elephant. Things to Do in Puri & Around

Apart from temple darshan, here is what to do on this trip:

• Jagannath Temple darshan, early morning: Arrive at the Singhadwara early. The temple opens at 5:00 AM, and morning darshan keeps you out of the midday heat. Queue length changes with the day, the rituals and the festival calendar.
• Watch the sunrise from Puri Beach: Early morning is the quieter time for a beach walk. The fishermen bring their boats in at dawn.
• Eat Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazaar: Inside the Jagannath Temple complex, Ananda Bazaar is where the Lord's prasad, cooked in earthen pots over wood fire, is sold to devotees.
• Take a dolphin-spotting boat ride at Chilika: Boats leave from Satapada and go through the Irrawaddy dolphin habitat. Sightings are not guaranteed. The Chilika Development Authority describes the dolphin as a shy animal, and usually only the head or tail shows above water. Boat charges vary by route and boat type, so confirm the rate at Satapada before boarding.
• Shop for Odisha handicrafts: Puri's market near Swargadwara is good for Pattachitra paintings (traditional cloth paintings with mythological scenes), Chandua patchwork, stone carvings and conch-shell items. Prices are negotiable. Bhubaneswar's Utkalika showroom has a good fixed-price selection.
• Visit Raghurajpur Heritage Village (14 km from Puri): A traditional Odishan crafts village where families practise Pattachitra, Gotipua dance training and Tussar painting. It is not part of the standard itinerary, but it is worth a 2-hour visit if you have time on Day 2.
• Try Odishan cuisine: Dalma (lentils and vegetables cooked together), machha jhola (fish curry), pakhala bhata (fermented rice with accompaniments) and chhena poda (baked cottage cheese dessert from Odisha). Available at local restaurants near the beach.

Places to Visit in the Jagannath Puri Tour

Here are the key places on this route, organised by destination:

Puri

• Jagannath Temple: One of the four Char Dham pilgrimages and a major Vaishnava shrine. Open to Hindu devotees only. The 65-metre (214 ft) Deul (main tower) is visible from across the city.
• Puri Beach & Marine Drive: A long stretch of sandy beach on the Bay of Bengal, ideal at sunrise. The coastal road (Marine Drive) connects Puri to Konark and is a pleasant drive.

Also in Puri, if you have extra time (not in the standard itinerary):

• Gundicha Temple: About 3 km from the Jagannath Temple on Bada Danda (Grand Road). This is the 'Garden House' of Lord Jagannath and the destination of the Rath Yatra procession. Also called the 'Aunt's House'.
• Lokanatha Temple: An old Shiva temple in Puri. Less crowded than Jagannath Temple, and a peaceful visit.

Chilika Lake (about 50 km from Puri)

• Satapada: The Puri-side gateway to Chilika Lake. Boat rides for dolphin sightings and the sea mouth depart from here.
• Kalijai Temple and Nalabana Bird Sanctuary: Kalijai is an island shrine dedicated to Goddess Kalijai, and Nalabana is a protected island where migratory birds arrive in winter. According to Odisha Tourism, nearly one million migratory birds of over 200 species arrive at Chilika in winter. Kalijai is reached by boat from the Barkul and Balugaon side of the lake, and Nalabana is closed to general visitors for most of the year. Neither is covered in the day trip from Satapada.

Konark (35 km from Puri)

• Konark Sun Temple, the 'Black Pagoda': UNESCO World Heritage Site. A 13th-century temple designed as the chariot of the Sun God, with 24 carved stone wheels. Keep at least 90 minutes to walk around the full chariot base.
• Chandrabhaga Beach: A quiet beach 3 km from the Konark Sun Temple, considered sacred. Far less crowded than Puri Beach. A short stop if time allows.

Bhubaneswar (about 60 km from Puri)

• Lingaraj Temple: The largest temple in Bhubaneswar, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the 11th century, with a 55-metre (180 ft) shikhara. Open to Hindus only. Other visitors can see it from the viewing platform outside the wall.
• Mukteshwar Temple: 10th-century Shiva temple considered the gem of Odishan architecture. It is known for the carved arched torana (gateway) in front.
• Parasurameswara Temple: 7th-century temple, among the oldest surviving temples in Bhubaneswar. Famous for its lattice windows and detailed stone carvings.
• Khandagiri & Udayagiri Jain Caves: Rock-cut caves on twin hills, dating to the 2nd century BCE and the reign of King Kharavela. Open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Odisha Tourism). Good viewpoint from the Khandagiri summit.

How to Reach Puri

• By Air: Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar (BBI), about 60 km from Puri, approx. 1.5 hours by cab. Connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Airport pickup from Bhubaneswar is included in the package.
• By Train: Puri Railway Station (PURI) is the nearest station to the Jagannath Temple and the most convenient arrival point for pilgrims. Direct trains run from Delhi (Purushottam Express) and Kolkata (Howrah to Puri Shatabdi, Vande Bharat and Dhauli Express). Check current schedules on IRCTC.
• By Road: Puri is about 60 km from Bhubaneswar on NH-316, about 1.5 hours. Konark is 35 km from Puri on the Marine Drive coastal road. OSRTC state buses and private AC coaches operate regularly on the Bhubaneswar to Puri route.

Jagannath Temple Puri: Important Visitor Information

• Entry: Shree Jagannath Temple is open to Hindu devotees only. Non-Hindu visitors can see the temple from outside, from Bada Danda and the Heritage Corridor around the outer wall, which opened in January 2024.
• Darshan Timings: Odisha Tourism lists the temple timings as 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, varying with rituals. Timings change on festival days, so verify at shreejagannatha.in before visiting.
• Queue system: The temple administration (SJTA) has introduced queue darshan with barricades in the Natamandap. On crowded days, devotees enter through Singhadwara and exit by the other three gates.
• No phones or cameras: Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside. Leave them at the hotel or deposit them before joining the queue.
• Dress code: Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, as Odisha Tourism advises for temples. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not suitable.
• Mahaprasad: Available at Ananda Bazaar inside the temple complex.
• Senior citizens: Darshan involves standing in a queue and walking barefoot. Go early in the morning.
