Places to Visit during the Sri Lanka Trip
A Sri Lanka trip must include an exploration of its stunning beaches, diverse wildlife, and ancient temples. Most Sri Lanka travel packages involve these aspects to give you a rich, fulfilling experience. Here are the top places that must be on your Sri Lanka itinerary:
1. Colombo
This is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and also the largest city here. Colombo is best known for providing cultural experiences through its colonial architecture. Meanwhile, you also get to experience the modern development spread throughout the capital. It's the best of both worlds, really! Top attractions here include:
- Colombo National Museum: It's an absolute must for history buffs who would like to learn about the island's rich history and culture.
- Pettah Market: This market is perfect for collecting souvenirs and purchasing local goods.
- Galle Face Green: This urban park provides a gorgeous backdrop for your sunset strolls.
- Gangaramaya Temple: This is a Buddhist temple that houses a museum within itself. Tourists admire it for its remarkable architecture.
2. Kandy
This city is a serene hub, surrounded by lush green forests. Moreover, it's also a UNESCO World Heritage site and therefore must be included in your Sri Lanka Heritage Tour Package. The best tourist places here are:
- Temple of the Tooth: This temple holds a very sacred relic of the Buddha and is therefore considered the holiest Buddhist site in the entirety of Sri Lanka.
- Kandy Lake: This man-made lake is nestled in the heart of the city. Tourists often saunter around here during the early mornings.
- Cultural Show: Don't miss the traditional Kandyan dance here which is native to Sri Lanka. The dance is often accompanied by the drum performance and is a great evening show for the travellers. Many Sri Lanka tour packages include this show in the itinerary.
- Royal Botanical Gardens: This is one of the largest and oldest botanical gardens in Asia. Travellers love the orchid collection here.
3. Sigiriya
Sigiriya is an ancient fortress complex on the island. Tourists and even locals are so impressed with this monument that they often label it as the eighth wonder of the world! Top attractions here include:
- Sigiriya Rock: This rock formation is as high as 200 meters. On top of it lies the palace. Tourists often enjoy climbing the rock and soaking in the panoramic views of gardens and frescoes down below.
- Pidurangala Rock: This is another rock formation that provides scenic views. The sunset views from here are otherworldly.
4. Anuradhapura
This was once the capital of Sri Lanka in ancient times, and now is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site! Here, you get to experience the sacred sites and old ruins. It definitely should be included in your Sri Lanka holiday package if you are a history enthusiast. Top Attractions here include:
- Sri Maha Bodhi Tree: Meet the oldest historically documented tree in the world! This tree is believed to have grown from the original tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.
- Abhayagiri Monastery: This is a huge monastic complex that is as old as two millennia.
- Ruwanwelisaya Stupa: This site is especially important if you are a Buddhist pilgrim. This massive Stupa houses the largest collection of Buddhist relics in the whole world.
5. Ella
Located in the central highlands, Ella is a beautiful hill station that has picturesque views and majestic waterfalls. It's also great for tourists who love hiking, as it has long hiking trails. Notable attractions here are:
- Ella Rock: Get the bird's-eye view of the stunning valleys and tea plantation when you hike on Ella Rock. Many Sri Lanka tour packages include this site as the panoramic views here are to die for.
- Nine Arches Bridge: This scenic bridge has a lot to offer to your Sri Lanka trip. Built during the colonial era, it is surrounded by lush greenery and immerses you in a serene atmosphere.
- Ravana Falls: Get a rejuvenating dip in this beautiful waterfall. It's a hit with both tourists and locals alike!
6. Nuwara Eliya
Often called 'Little England,' Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 metres above sea level and is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. The cool, misty climate, colonial-era bungalows, and vast tea estates feel like a completely different world from the tropical coast. Whether you are doing a beach + hill country combination or simply want to experience Ceylon tea at its source, Nuwara Eliya is essential. Top attractions include:
- Pedro Tea Estate: One of Sri Lanka's finest tea estates, offering a guided factory tour from leaf to cup — with free tasting at the end. About 2 hours.
- Gregory Lake: A serene man-made lake at the heart of town, perfect for a morning walk or a short boating session.
- Horton Plains National Park: About 30 km away. Home to 'World's End' — a sheer 870-metre drop with sweeping views of the southern plains on clear mornings.
- Victoria Park: A beautifully maintained botanical garden home to many migratory bird species between March and August.
7. Galle
Galle is a coastal city on Sri Lanka's southwest tip, best known for its 17th-century Dutch colonial fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the ramparts at sunset and the Indian Ocean views are unforgettable. The fort's cobblestone lanes have boutique cafes, galleries, and excellent restaurants. Galle combines history and beaches in a way that no other Sri Lankan city does. Top attractions include:
- Galle Fort: Walk the full perimeter of the fort walls — the lighthouse and the Dutch Reformed Church are the most photographed spots.
- Unawatuna Beach: One of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches, just 6 km from Galle. Calm, curved bay perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
- Galle National Museum: Colonial-era artifacts and local heritage. About 1 hour.
8. Yala National Park
Yala holds the highest density of wild leopards of any protected area in the world. Jeep safaris operate twice daily — at dawn (5:30–6:00 AM) and afternoon (3:00 PM). Beyond leopards, Yala is home to elephants, sloth bears, saltwater crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. Best visited between February and July when wildlife activity peaks. Most of our Sri Lanka Heritage Tour and Group Tour packages include a Yala safari stop.

There is a plethora of activities you can do in Sri Lanka. Whether you are an adventure seeker, a history buff, or a nature lover, you're in for a treat when in Sri Lanka. Here are a few things you must include in your Sri Lanka tour package:
1. Visit Historical Sites

- You can go see how Ceylon tea is made from scratch and sample the finest teas.
- You can visit the Dambatenne Tea Factory in Haputale or the Pedro Tea Estate in Nuwara Eliya for a top-notch experience.
3. Relax on Beautiful Beaches
The island is famous for its beaches. Some popular tourist beaches here are Unawatuna, Mirissa, Arugam Bay, Bentota, and Nilaveli.
4. Experience Wildlife and Nature
- Sri Lanka is home to various national parks and reserves where you can enjoy wildlife.
- Some popular parks are Yala National Park, Sinharaja Rainforest, Wilpattu National Park, Udawalawe National Park, and Minneriya National Park.
5. Adventure Activities
Sri Lanka is an adventure lover's paradise. You can enjoy plenty of adventure activities here, like hiking (at Horton Plains National Park and Baker's Falls), white-water rafting (at Kitulgala), and hot-air ballooning (at Galle).
6. Whale Watching at Mirissa
Between November and April, the waters off Mirissa are home to Blue Whales — the largest animals ever to have existed on Earth. Sperm Whales and pods of Spinner Dolphins are also regularly spotted. Morning boat departures operate at 6:30 AM from Mirissa harbour. Tours run for approximately 4–5 hours with licensed operators. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that many travellers rate as the highlight of their entire Sri Lanka trip.
7. Scenic Train Ride — Kandy to Ella
The 7-hour train journey from Kandy to Ella through Sri Lanka's central highlands is consistently rated one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Passing through misty mountains, tea estates, waterfalls, and jungle valleys, it is an experience worth planning your itinerary around. Reserve a seat in the observation car in advance — it fills up fast during peak season. Sit on the left side when travelling from Kandy for the best valley views.
8. Visit a Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya
The central highlands produce world-famous Ceylon tea. Both the Pedro Tea Estate in Nuwara Eliya and the Dambatenne Tea Factory in Haputale offer guided tours showing the full production process — from picking and withering to rolling, fermenting, and drying — ending with a free tasting. About 1.5 to 2 hours per visit. A fascinating experience even if you are not a tea drinker.
What to Eat during the Sri Lanka Trip
Sri Lankan cuisine is a delicious mix of flavors like spicy, tangy, and aromatic. The food is mainly centered on fresh vegetables, meat, seafood, and rice. Here are some of the dishes you must try on your Sri Lanka trip:
1. Rice and Curry
This is the staple diet of the island. The meal consists of a big serving of steam rice along with a number of small servings of curries (either vegetable, dhal, fish, or meat curry). Often these are supplemented with condiments like pickled vegetables and spicy sambals.
2. Hoppers (Appa)
Hoppers are rice flour pancakes that are soft in the center and crispy around the edges. They are eaten as a breakfast or dinner and often served with dhal or lamb curry. The hoppers come in three varieties — plain hopper, sweet hopper (sweetened with palm sugar), and egg hopper (cooked with egg at the center).
3. Kottu Roti
This is a common street food prepared by stir-frying Godamba roti with meat, eggs, and vegetables. It is cooked on a griddle and served with a dipping sauce to make a savory and spicy dish.
4. Sri Lankan Fish Curry
This traditional Sri Lankan dish is made with fresh local fish like mackerel or tuna. To give it a spicy and tangy flavor, it is cooked with tamarind and Sri Lankan spices.
5. Lamprais
This delicious meal is made of vegetables, curry (generally meat curry), and rice and is then wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed.
6. Watalappan
Sri Lanka's signature dessert — a steamed custard pudding made with coconut milk, eggs, and kithul palm jaggery. Silky in texture, subtly spiced, and mildly sweet. Found on the menu at almost every good Sri Lankan restaurant. Don't leave the country without trying it at least once.
7. String Hoppers (Idi Appa)
Delicate steamed noodle cakes made from rice flour, served with coconut sambol and dhal curry. A popular breakfast and dinner across Sri Lanka, especially in the central highlands and coastal towns. Lighter than regular hoppers and a favourite among first-time visitors to Sri Lankan food.
Shopping in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka produces some genuinely excellent things worth bringing home. Not just souvenirs — quality items you will actually use and enjoy.
What to Buy
- Ceylon Tea: Buy directly from estate shops or trusted brands like MLESNA and Dilmah. Available in loose leaf and gift-pack formats. Choose from single-estate teas or classic Ceylon blends.
- Ceylon Cinnamon: Real Ceylon cinnamon is softer, lighter, and sweeter than the cassia variety common in India. A meaningful and inexpensive gift. Best bought in Pettah Market or spice shops.
- Gemstones: Sri Lanka is one of the world's leading producers of blue sapphires, cat's eye, and moonstones. Purchase only from certified dealers — look for the Sri Lanka Gem & Jewellery Association certification. Avoid roadside shops.
- Batik & Handloom Fabrics: Beautiful hand-printed textiles. Fixed-price government stores (Laksala) are reliable for quality. Bargaining is possible in local markets.
- Wooden Masks & Crafts: Traditional Kolam masks from Ambalangoda are distinctive and make excellent wall decor. Look for handmade pieces over machine-pressed ones.
- Ayurvedic Products: Sri Lanka has a strong Ayurvedic tradition. Herbal oils, soaps, and creams made from local ingredients are widely available and affordable.
Best Shopping Spots
- Pettah Market, Colombo — for spices, fabrics, everyday goods
- Odel Shopping Mall, Colombo — for branded clothing and souvenirs
- Kandy City Centre — for gems and handcrafts

Sri Lanka Travel Tips for a Memorable Vacation
Here are some practical as well as destination-specific travel tips to make your Lanka trip fun-filled with your family and friends-
- Try Unique Places: Explore all the unique places and try different activities to enjoy the best of Sri Lanka Tourism. Your itinerary should have a blend of history, culture, adventure, nature, and spiritual trips.
- Don't miss the Fun: Don't miss the Mirissa adventure tour if you are in Sri Lanka. You will learn very unique and interesting insights into Marine biology.
- Village tours for authentic experiences: You can also explore Sri Lankan villages and experience their lifestyle and culture for an enriching Sri Lanka trip.
- Pack Wisely: Sri Lanka enjoys tropical weather, so pack your clothes accordingly. For temple hopping, you must cover your shoulders and knees. Modesty is the best policy when you are on a spiritual tour. If there is any sacred offering, receive it with both hands to show respect.
- Hotels near main destination: For nature and wildlife enthusiasts, book hotels, lodges, or guesthouses near the main destination.
- Sample Cuisine Wisely: Not everything will suit your taste buds in Sri Lanka. So, sample the cuisines wisely. Avoid too many spicy foods.
- When to visit: You can avoid the monsoon if your priority is not a specific trip. Consider December - March the best time to go west, south, and hill country in Sri Lanka. For east tours, consider April to September.
- Affordable Calls: In Sri Lanka, the major local SIM card providers are Dialog and Mobitel. So, buy a local SIM from city outlets or airports to make your calls and text messages affordable.
- Currency & ATMs: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency. ATMs are widely available in Colombo and major tourist towns. Carry some cash for national park entry fees, smaller towns, and temple donations. Most hotels and larger restaurants accept credit cards.
- Dress Code at Temples: Carrying a light scarf or shawl is more reliable than relying on temple-provided sarongs. Remove footwear before entering any temple premises. Never turn your back to a Buddha statue for a photo.
- Book Yala Safari in Advance: During peak season (December–April), Yala National Park jeeps fill up days in advance. Do not assume you can book on arrival. Our packages include pre-booked safari slots to avoid disappointment. Note: Yala briefly closes in September each year — check dates when planning.

Both include guided support, private transport, and comfortable accommodation throughout. You can also customise either package to suit your schedule.

Ans. Yes. All travel within our packages is done in private AC vehicles at a comfortable, flexible pace. We select hotels based on accessibility and comfort. Please mention any specific health or mobility requirements at the time of booking and we will customise accordingly.

Ans. The Kandy to Ella scenic train ride can be included in packages that cover the hill country route — especially the Sri Lanka Group Tour and Sri Lanka Heritage Tour. If your chosen package uses a private vehicle on this leg, you can request a train upgrade for this specific stretch. Our team will arrange reserved seats or observation car tickets in advance.
Q25: What is the best way to get around Sri Lanka?
Ans. All our packages include a private AC vehicle with an experienced driver for all inter-city transfers — the most comfortable and time-efficient option. Within cities and towns, tuk-tuks are great for short distances; always agree on the fare before boarding. The PickMe app works like Ola/Uber for metered rides in Colombo. The Kandy–Ella train is highly recommended as a standalone experience for its extraordinary scenery.
