Story of Kanyakumari
Once upon a time, there lived a demon called Banasura who got a boon from Lord Brahma that he cannot be killed by any god or demon but only a woman. When he got the boon Lord Shukra intervened and advised him to modify the boon to be more specific. So, Banasura modified the boon- only a virgin girl could kill him.
Taking the advantage of this boon, Banasura felt invincible so he started to destroy the peace of devas and the earth. Devi Kanyakumari was incarnated to kill demon Banasura. She meditated at this southernmost tip which later came to be known as Kanyakumari. Lord Shiva, when he saw Kanyakumari, intended to marry her.
On the day of the wedding Sage Narada intervened by making a rooster crow on the auspicious timing of the wedding to make the wedding auspicious. It was done for a bigger purpose- to make Kanyakumari realize that she has to kill Banasura. She is fulfilling the condition of the boon that only a virgin girl could kill him.
After the disrupted wedding, Kanyakumari felt sad. So, she started destroying everything around and scattered colorful sands which are believed to be the origin of Kanyakumari unique and colorful beach sands. She killed demon Banasura and restored the balance of the universe. Later she revealed herself as Parvati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva.
