The Chardham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India. It takes you to four Himalayan temples: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Our Chardham Yatra package from Dehradun runs 10 days and 9 nights, with hotel stays, a private vehicle, daily breakfast and dinner, and ground support from the first pickup to the final drop in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Quick answer: The Chardham Yatra from Dehradun takes 10 days by road and covers about 1,375 km of driving. The route goes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, then Badrinath. Registration with Uttarakhand Tourism is compulsory. Kedarnath helicopter tickets can be added separately.
Before you book: two days in this plan are demanding. Day 3 (Gangotri) is a 10-12 hour road day, and Day 5 (Kedarnath) means about 32 km of walking up and back if you trek. Seniors should plan a pony, palki or helicopter for Kedarnath.
Go in May, early June, or from mid-September to October. Skip July and August. Monsoon rain brings landslides and road closures on all four routes, and a single blocked stretch can cost you a day. Late June is often wet too.
Even in September the weather can stop the yatra. On 26-27 September 2026 the Garhwal Commissioner suspended it for two days after red and orange rain alerts. Check the official portal a day before you set out.
| Dham | Opened | Expected closing (tentative, as of 29 Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 19 April 2026 | 11 November 2026 (Bhai Dooj) |
| Gangotri | 19 April 2026 | 10 November 2026 (Annakut) |
| Kedarnath | 22 April 2026 | 11 November 2026 (Bhai Dooj) |
| Badrinath | 23 April 2026 | 13 November 2026 |
Opening dates are from the Uttarakhand Tourism registration portal. The closing dates are not final until the temple committees announce them. See our Chardham opening and closing dates page for updates.
Registration is mandatory and free. Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (Uttarakhand Tourism) with an ID such as Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence or passport, plus a mobile number. You get a registration letter with a QR code, which is checked on the route. The portal’s FAQ lists 10-65 years as the age range for registration, so if anyone in your group is younger or older, check the current rule on the portal before you travel. IRCTC HeliYatra also requires this registration before you can book a Kedarnath helicopter. Step-by-step help is in our Chardham Yatra registration guide.
The Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks are the physically demanding parts. Book a pony, palki or doli in advance, or take the helicopter for Kedarnath. Carry your regular medicines for the full trip and a few extra days.
At Kedarnath (about 3,580 m), a severe headache, breathlessness, vomiting or confusion needs attention at once. Go to the nearest medical post and come down to a lower altitude. Don’t wait for it to pass.

Your Chardham Yatra starts in Dehradun. After pickup, you drive to Barkot, the base town for Yamunotri temple.
Distance: ~130 km
Approx Time: 4-6 hrs, depending on traffic at Mussoorie
Barkot is a quiet town on the Yamuna, and a night here helps you adjust before the Yamunotri trek.
Today is Yamunotri Temple darshan, the first of the four dhams. Yamunotri (3,293 m) is near the source of the Yamuna river and is the seat of Goddess Yamuna.
Note: Carry warm clothes and wear comfortable shoes, as it is cold at the temple.
Pilgrim Tip: Devotees tie rice or potatoes in a cloth and cook them in Surya Kund, the hot spring beside the temple, then take it home as prasad. A step-by-step guide is in our Yamunotri trek guide.
Today’s focus is Gangotri (about 3,100 m), where the Ganga is worshipped close to its source at Gaumukh. According to legend, King Bhagirath’s penance brought the Ganga down to earth here.
Accommodation: Hotel in Uttarkashi
Distance: ~280 km (Barkot to Gangotri ~180 km, then ~100 km back to Uttarkashi)
Approx Time: 10-12 hrs
Tip: This is the longest day of the yatra, so start by 5 am. if you offer the split version (Barkot to Uttarkashi, then Gangotri as an 11-day plan), mention it here.]
After breakfast in Uttarkashi, you begin the long drive to Guptkashi or Sonprayag, the base for Kedarnath.
Accommodation: Hotel in Guptkashi / Sonprayag
Distance: ~200 km to Guptkashi (Sonprayag is ~30 km further)
Approx Time: 8-9 hrs
It is a long travel day on winding mountain roads, so carry water and snacks.
Today is Kedarnath darshan, the temple of Lord Shiva at about 3,580 m.
Accommodation: Hotel in Sonprayag / Guptkashi
Important: The trek is 16 km each way. Uttarakhand Tourism puts the climb at 6-8 hours on foot, and then you walk back down the same day. That is a lot for most people, so decide before the trip:
After Kedarnath darshan, you head to Joshimath (officially renamed Jyotirmath), the gateway to Badrinath.
Distance: ~185 km
Travel Time: 6-8 hrs
This comes right after the Kedarnath day, so treat it as a rest-in-the-car day. Keep the evening free.
Joshimath is a holy town and home to Jyotirmath, one of the four maths founded by Adi Shankaracharya, which gives the town its new official name.
Today you visit Badrinath Temple (about 3,133 m), dedicated to Lord Vishnu, on the banks of the Alaknanda river.
Accommodation: Hotel in Joshimath
Pilgrim Tip: The evening aarti at Badrinath is only possible if you stay the night there. If you can switch this night to a Badrinath hotel on request, say so here.]
A day off from temple travel. Auli is about 14-16 km from Joshimath by road, a ski slope in winter and open meadows in summer, with views of the Garhwal peaks.
Accommodation: Hotel in Joshimath
Keep this day flexible. If a landslide costs you time earlier in the trip, this is the day that absorbs it.
Today you head back down to the plains, to Haridwar on the banks of the Ganga.
Accommodation: Hotel in Haridwar
Distance: ~275 km
Approx Time: 9-10 hrs
If you have time, you can walk through the markets near Har Ki Pauri.
Your Chardham Yatra ends with a short drive back to Dehradun, where you are dropped at the railway station or the airport.
Distance: ~55 km to Dehradun city; the airport drop is usually shorter
Time: 1-2 hrs

Dehradun, Barkot, Yamunotri, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, Guptkashi/Sonprayag, Kedarnath, Rudraprayag, Joshimath, Badrinath, Haridwar and back to Dehradun. This follows the traditional order (Yamunotri first, Badrinath last) and avoids driving back over the same roads.
Ten days by road. That covers all four dhams plus one day at Auli, which doubles as a buffer. Full helicopter tours from Dehradun take 2 days.
It can be, with a doctor’s clearance and the right support on the trek days. Use a pony, palki or helicopter for Kedarnath, which sits at about 3,580 m. Check the registration age rule on the official portal before booking.
Yes, on IRCTC HeliYatra, once your Chardham registration is done. It replaces the 32 km round-trip trek.

About 1,375 km by road for this 10-day circuit. If you walk both treks, add 12 km at Yamunotri and 32 km at Kedarnath (round trips).
It depends on group size, hotel category, vehicle and travel month. Call us with your dates for an exact quote. Helicopter tickets, ponies and lunch are extra.
Yes. Register on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. It is free, the QR code is checked on the route, and the portal’s FAQ lists 10-65 years as the eligible age.
Yamunotri is 6 km one way and steep in parts. Kedarnath is 16 km one way with a steady climb. Both are built trekking paths, but expect uneven stretches, steps and mud after rain. Ponies, palkis and dolis are available on both.
Hotels in Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi/Sonprayag, Joshimath and Haridwar, in the category you choose. Rooms in the hill towns are simpler than city hotels.
Paved, but narrow in places, with sharp bends and landslide-prone stretches on the Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath roads. Plan every day to reach the hotel before dark.
Coverage depends on your network. It is usually fine in the towns and weak or missing on parts of the treks, so tell your family your plan for trek days.
