VIP Darshan at Kedarnath - What It Is and Why It Matters

A VIP Darshan coupon (also called priority Darshan slip) is what separates a helicopter pilgrim's experience from a general-queue pilgrim's. In peak season (May-June), the general queue at Kedarnath runs 3-6 hours. With the priority slip, helicopter passengers complete their Darshan in 45-90 minutes.

The priority Darshan slip is issued at the base helipad by Shri Kedarnathji Mandir Samiti staff. It costs ₹2,500 per pilgrim - this amount goes directly to the Mandir Samiti, not the helicopter operator. In Namaste India Trip packages, this is pre-arranged. If you are booking an IRCTC shuttle ticket independently, carry ₹2,500 cash per person for this at Sersi or Phata helipad. UPI may not work reliably at the helipad.

Inside the temple: the garbhagriha houses the naturally formed pyramidal Kedarnath Jyotirlinga - the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. The sanctum is small; priority Darshan allows a closer, unhurried view. Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside the temple. Leave them at the counter near the entrance.

Health Advisory - Kedarnath at 11,755 Feet

Kedarnath is located at a high altitude of 3,583 m (11,755 ft). Helicopter pilgrims ascend from Guptkashi (1,319 m) or Phata (~1,524 m) to this altitude in under 15 minutes - the body has no time to acclimatise. Do not exert yourself, go slow, and always catch your breath.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

The most common illness at high altitude - may occur above 2,500 m. Symptoms: headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty sleeping.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

A serious condition - fluid in the lungs causing breathing failure. Typically manifests at night, progresses rapidly, and can be fatal within hours. Symptoms: persistent dry cough, bright red sputum, chest tightness, shortness of breath even at rest. Younger pilgrims who overexert are particularly susceptible.

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

• Start walking from the helipad slowly. Take short breaks. Never rush at 11,755 ft.

• Pregnant women more than 6 weeks along are not permitted for the Yatra.
• Carry your personal prescription medicines - no pharmacies at Kedarnath, only basic emergency assistance.
• If you experience chest pain, persistent breathlessness, or confusion - do not wait. Inform helipad or Mandir Samiti staff immediately.
• Carry ORS sachets and cold cream/sunscreen for sun exposure at altitude. If prescribed, carry a portable oxygen cylinder.
• Suitable clothing: salwar kameez, track suit, or pant-shirt. Saree is not recommended for the helipad and temple area. Wear trekking shoes, not slippers.

Baggage Rules and Travel Tips

• Each helicopter carries 4-6 passengers. Passenger weight must be in proportion with total helicopter capacity. Total capacity is 420 kg for 6 passengers.
• Only one piece of baggage per passenger - a soft handbag or duffel. Maximum 5 kg. Hard suitcases and trolleys are NOT permitted in the helicopter. Leave extra baggage at your Dehradun hotel.
• Children above 2 years require a full-price ticket. No concession for children or senior citizens.
• Arrive at the helipad as early as instructed on your booking confirmation. Late arrivals may miss the flight with no refund.
• Carry your IRCTC e-ticket as a printout. Also carry the original government photo ID matching your booking. Screenshots are not accepted.
