Both Manali and Shimla are extremely popular among tourists worldwide for their hilly geography influenced by the Himalayas. The ice-skating rink in Shimla happens to be the largest open-air arena that offers naturally frozen ice to skaters in this part of the globe. This ice-skating club has completed its Diamond Jubilee celebrations. You can enjoy skating from early December to February every year. The low temperatures and clear skies provide the ideal conditions for uninterrupted skating sessions.

Shimla Trekking Venture

One of the most sought-after adventure sports is trekking, and Shimla makes way for this activity with its geographically inclined mountain terrain. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) offers equipment, guidance, hospitality, and camping facilities to trekkers for a smooth and efficient experience.

A few of the popular places for trekking in Shimla include the following:

  • Naldehra, which is located at a height of 2,044 m above sea level and lies 23 km away from Shimla.
  • Narkanda, which is 2,700 m above sea level and lies 64 km from Shimla.
  • Chharabra, which is 2,953 m above sea level and stands 13 km from Shimla.

For trekking in the Himalayan region, you will always have to start with Manali. Be it a short day-trip or longer overnighters that include porters, cooks, guides, and mule trains, you will find everything that you need in Manali. Famous trekking options in this region include Pin Parvati, Hampta Pass, Chandrakhani Pass, Malana, and Friendship Peak, among others. Rappelling, zip-lining, and river crossing are also organized during the summer months in Manali for trekkers.

The Kufri ski resort is the most accessible one in the northern part of India. It is situated 10 km from the main town of Shimla and is popular for the snowfall and ideal conditions it offers for skiing during the winter season. Narkanda, another skiing spot, is located 64 km from Shimla and is one of the oldest ski resorts in India. Standing at 8,100 feet above sea level, Narkanda attracts ski lovers, from first-timers to advanced-level skiers.

Solang Valley in Manali for Paragliding and Skiing

Solang Valley is a perfect place for skiing in the Manali region. This place offers more than just skiing to adventure lovers, with options for horse riding, sleigh riding, rubber-tube rides, and snowball fights. The summer months in Solang Valley also offer zorbing and parasailing options, with the perfect climatic conditions for such adventure sports. While in Manali, do not forget to visit Solang Valley if you are in for adventure.

River Rafting Option

Both Shimla and Manali are hilly regions with mountainous rivers flowing through them. While the Sutlej flows by the town of Shimla, Manali is guided by the mighty Beas. The river rafting experience includes fighting the waves and current of these wild, torrent-like mountainous rivers on an inflatable rubber dinghy. Monsoon and winter are not ideal for this adventure sport. For white-water rafting in Shimla, you will start from Chabba and reach Tattapani (12 km distance) in about two hours, challenging the aggressive and risky waters of the Sutlej. The Beas River also offers similar rafting facilities in the Manali region.

With all these adventures for an adrenaline rush, you will have nothing to worry about while you are in Himachal Pradesh.
