|---|---|---|---|---|

| Deluxe Private Road | 3N/4D | ₹22,500 | Haridwar | Families, couples |

What most people don't realize: the price difference between a ₹18,500 group package and a ₹22,500 private package is roughly ₹800 per day. For a family with elderly parents or young children, that ₹1000/day gap buys you a private vehicle, flexible timing, and the ability to stop whenever needed. Worth it.
Group Tour vs Private Tour - Which Kedarnath Package Is Right for You?
| Factor | Group Package | Private Package |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From ₹18,500/person | From ₹22,500/person |
| Vehicle | Shared Tempo Traveller | Private Innova / Crysta |
| Schedule | Fixed — no changes mid-trip | Flexible halts, rest as needed |
| Senior Care | Standard group support | Dedicated attention throughout |
| Best For | Solo, budget, student pilgrims | Families, elderly, couples |
| Our Honest Pick | < ₹10,000 budget, flexible group | Senior citizens, family with kids |
From practical experience: solo pilgrims under 45 with flexible schedules do great on group packages. Families with anyone above 60 — always go private. The extra cost is minor. The difference in comfort and pace is significant.
Kedarnath Helicopter Package - Prices and How It Works
Helicopter Yatra is not a luxury — for senior citizens, it is often the safest option. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is completely bypassed. You land 500 metres from the temple.
| Helipad | Altitude | Flight | Round-Trip 2026 | Distance | Book Via |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sirsi / Sersi | 6,500 ft | 11 min | ₹6,390 + GST | 23 km | IRCTC only |
| Phata | 1,524 m | 9 min | ₹10,164 + GST | 31 km | IRCTC only |
| Guptkashi | 1,319 m | 15 min | ₹12,762 + GST | 45 km | IRCTC only |
| Dehradun (Charter) | 640 m | ~50 min | ₹85,000 all-incl. | 266 km | NIT direct |
IRCTC is the only authorised platform for shuttle tickets. No agent or portal can sell IRCTC shuttle tickets. Booking opens mid-April 2026 for pre-monsoon; mid-June for September–October dates. Slots for Phata and Guptkashi sell out within hours on opening day — have your URN ready before 6 PM.
Fraud warning: Agents on WhatsApp, Instagram, and travel apps 'sell' Kedarnath helicopter tickets every season. Many are fake. Report to cybercrime.gov.in. Only use heliyatra.irctc.co.in.
Kedarnath Yatra Registration - Mandatory QR Pass
Every single pilgrim must register before visiting Kedarnath. No registration = no entry at Sonprayag. Registration is free.
- Go to registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — or WhatsApp 'Yatra' to 8394833833
- Select dates and 'Kedarnath' as destination
- Enter pilgrim details + Aadhaar / Passport number
- Download QR-coded e-pass — carry digital + printed copy
One mistake many people make: they arrive at Sonprayag checkpoint without completing this registration, assuming it can be done on the spot. It cannot. The process takes 5 minutes online — do it 2–3 days before your departure. NIT assists all clients with this at no charge.
How to Book Your Kedarnath Tour Package - Step by Step
- Complete free Char Dham registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — get your individual Yatra Registration Number (URN).
- Contact NIT at +91-9711616316 or namasteindiatrip.com with your travel dates, group size, and city of departure.
- Choose your package type — road (group or private) or helicopter. NIT sends you a detailed itinerary and pricing within 24 hours.
- Pay 40% advance to confirm booking. Balance due 30 days before travel date.
- NIT shares your hotel vouchers, vehicle details, driver contact, and full day-by-day schedule 7 days before departure.
- For helicopter: NIT guides you through IRCTC booking on opening day — or books the Dehradun charter package directly with NIT.
- On travel day: NIT driver picks you up. From that point, everything — Sonprayag arrival timing, Gaurikund departure, trek pace, Darshan slot — is coordinated.
If you are planning this seriously: book at least 60 days in advance for May–June dates. September–October packages can be booked 30 days out. What happens if you delay? In peak 2025 season, Phata and Guptkashi IRCTC slots sold in 90 minutes. Hotels near the base helipads were fully booked by March. Starting late means paying more and getting less.
Best Time for Kedarnath Tour
| Factor | May–Jun 15 | Jun–Aug | Sep–Oct | Nov |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day Temp | 12-15°C | 10-14°C | 8-10°C | 0-5°C |
| Night Temp | 0-2°C | 5-8°C | -2 to -5°C | -10°C+ |
| Crowd Level | Very High | Low | Moderate | Very Low |
| Helicopter | Operating | Suspended | Operating | Reducing |
| NIT Verdict | Book 60 days early | Avoid | Best window | Confirm first |
May to June 15 — Peak Season
Perfect weather for trekking. Snow still visible on peaks. But Sonprayag sees 8,000–10,000 pilgrims daily in this window. Book 60–90 days ahead. Budget at least 90 minutes for Sonprayag queue. Arrive early.
September 15 to October 31 — Best Window
This is where experienced Kedarnath yatris go. Post-monsoon skies are clear, queues are short, Darshan is peaceful. Nights drop to -5°C — carry serious woollens. Helicopter slots are easier to get. First-time visitors: choose this window.
July–August — Do Not Visit
Helicopter suspended. NH-58 landslides close the route regularly. The trek becomes dangerously slippery. No responsible operator recommends this window. Skip it.
Sonprayag to Kedarnath
Sonprayag is where every pilgrim's real journey begins — and where most itineraries fall apart if not planned correctly.
- Sonprayag is the last point for private vehicles. From here, a government-authorised shuttle (Mahindra Bolero, ₹50 fixed) covers 5 km to Gaurikund.
- In peak May–June, Sonprayag parking fills by 6:30–7 AM. NIT drivers know this — our standard departure from base hotels is 3:30–4 AM.
- At Gaurikund (1,981 m), take a dip in Gauri Kund hot spring before the trek. Customary, sacred, and practically useful — warm water eases the muscles before the 16 km climb.
- Trek milestones: Gaurikund → Jungle Chatti (4 km, toughest) → Bheembali (6 km, rest point) → Rambara (9 km) → Lincholi (13 km, altitude felt here) → Kedarnath (16 km).
- Average trek time: 6–8 hours upward. Return: 4–5 hours. Plan minimum 2 days — one to ascend, one for darshan and descent.
- Pony: ₹3,000–₹5,000 round trip. Palki: ₹8,000–₹12,000. Helicopter shuttle: IRCTC booking.
What a Real Kedarnath Package Day Looks Like
4:00 AM. Your NIT driver is outside the hotel, engine running. You leave Guptkashi while the rest of the town sleeps. The road to Sonprayag is clear at this hour — 35 minutes, no traffic.
5:15 AM. You are at Sonprayag. The parking lot has maybe 20 vehicles. You board the government shuttle to Gaurikund in 8 minutes. Others who arrive at 8 AM will wait 90 minutes for this same shuttle. That is the only difference — departure time.
6:00 AM. Trek begins at Gaurikund. The first 4 km to Jungle Chatti is steep. Your NIT guide sets a slow, deliberate pace. No rushing. At Bheembali (6 km), a tea stall. Sit for 10 minutes. Eat something.
By 11:30 AM, you reach Kedarnath. Your VIP Darshan coupon — arranged in advance — takes you to the priority entry. General queue at this time is 3 hours long. You complete Darshan in 40 minutes. The Jyotirlinga up close, the chanting, the high-altitude stillness. That moment is why this Yatra exists.
From practical experience, the single factor that separates a smooth Kedarnath Yatra from a chaotic one is not money — it is departure time from the base hotel. Leave by 4 AM. Everything else follows.
What Is Included and What Is Not — NIT Package Details
| Included in NIT Packages | Not Included (Extra Costs) |
|---|---|
| AC vehicle + trained hill driver | Air / train tickets to Haridwar or Dehradun |
| Driver allowance, tolls, parking, fuel | Pony / Palki / Pitthu charges at Gaurikund |
| Hotel accommodation (as per package) | IRCTC helicopter shuttle fare + GST |
| Meals as specified in itinerary | Priority Darshan slip ₹2,500 (Mandir Samiti fee) |
| VIP Darshan coordination | Personal expenses, tips, laundry |
| Char Dham registration assistance | Extra nights due to weather/landslide delay |
| 5% GST on services | Any puja / Abhishek ritual fees |
Hidden charges most pilgrims don't expect: the priority Darshan slip at the helipad (₹2,500, Mandir Samiti fee) — this is separate from everything. Pony and palki charges at Gaurikund are negotiated directly with the operators there. And if your vehicle is from outside Uttarakhand, a Green Card (₹400–₹600) is required at the border checkpoint. NIT vehicles already carry this.
Common Mistakes Pilgrims Make on Kedarnath Tour
- Skipping Char Dham registration until arrival. Entry denied at Sonprayag without QR e-pass. Takes 5 minutes online — do it 2–3 days before departure, not on the road.
- Leaving the base hotel after 7 AM. Sonprayag parking fills by 6:30–7 AM in May–June. Late arrival means 2+ hours wasted before the trek even begins.
- Booking helicopter tickets through WhatsApp agents. Every season, pilgrims pay ₹5,000–₹15,000 to agents for IRCTC tickets that either don't exist or are revoked. Use heliyatra.irctc.co.in only.
- Not carrying printed documents. Mobile network fails between Sonprayag and Kedarnath. If your phone dies at the checkpoint, a printed Char Dham e-pass and ID copy saves you.
- Wearing wrong footwear. Sandals and sneakers on the Kedarnath trek cause ankle injuries on the rocky path, especially on the descent. Trekking shoes or grip-soled boots only.
- Rushing at altitude. Pilgrims who push pace above Lincholi (13 km mark) are the ones who end up with AMS symptoms — headache, nausea — and can't complete darshan. Walk slower than you think you need to.
- Booking only for themselves, not accounting for delays. If your return train from Haridwar is on Day 4 and your trek Day is Day 3, a single weather delay or landslide destroys the plan. Always keep a buffer day.
Pro Tips for Kedarnath Tour Package
- Choose Guptkashi as your base for helicopter Yatra — lowest altitude (1,319 m) among all helipads, best hotels, medical facilities, and weather reliability. Worth the ₹6,000 fare difference over Sirsi.
- For road Yatra: reach Gaurikund by 6–6:30 AM. This gives you 5–6 hours of trek time before the afternoon cloud buildup and crowd peak at the temple.
- September 15 – October 10 is the sweet spot — post-monsoon clarity, 60–70% fewer pilgrims than May, and IRCTC helicopter slots that are actually bookable without a 6 PM alarm.
- Carry ₹3,000–₹5,000 in cash. UPI fails above Sonprayag. ATMs at Gaurikund run dry in peak season. Your entire on-ground spending — shuttle, tea stalls, emergency — depends on physical cash.
- Book the opening week package (22–30 April) for the Utsav Doli procession. Lord Shiva's palanquin arrives from Ukhimath — a once-a-year spiritual experience most pilgrims don't know about.
- Add Tungnath–Chopta to your Kedarnath package. Tungnath (3,680 m) is the world's highest Shiva temple, just 70 km from Kedarnath. The combined 5N/6D package at ₹16,500 gives you two extraordinary shrines in one trip.
- Senior citizens: get the medical fitness certificate before departure. Without it, Char Dham registration cannot be completed for 60+ pilgrims. Your doctor signs it — takes 10 minutes.
Health Advisory — Kedarnath at 3,583 Metres
Kedarnath is the highest Jyotirlinga in India. At 11,755 ft, the air is significantly thinner. Helicopter pilgrims ascend from 1,319 m to 3,583 m in under 15 minutes — zero acclimatisation time.
- AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness): Headache, nausea, dizziness within 2–4 hours of arrival. Rest and hydrate. Descend if it worsens.
- HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema): Fluid in lungs. Persistent cough, chest tightness, breathlessness at rest. Medical emergency — immediate descent needed.
- HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema): Brain swelling. Severe headache, disorientation, loss of balance. Requires immediate evacuation.
- Walk slowly. Take breaks every 30 minutes above 2,500 m. Never rush.
- Heart / BP / COPD conditions: medical fitness certificate mandatory. Declare at registration.
- Pregnant women (6+ weeks): not permitted on the high-altitude route.
- NIT vehicles carry portable oxygen and first aid on all mountain routes.
Kedarnath Yatra Rules 2026 — Know Before You Go
- QR e-pass mandatory: verified at Sonprayag and Gaurikund checkpoints. No pass = no entry, no exceptions.
- Medical certificate for 60+ pilgrims: upload during Char Dham registration. Must be signed by a registered doctor.
- Green Card + Trip Card: commercial vehicles entering the Yatra route must carry these from Uttarakhand Transport Dept. NIT vehicles carry them as standard.
- Helicopter only via IRCTC: heliyatra.irctc.co.in. No agent can legally sell shuttle tickets.
- Trek cutoff time: trekking from Gaurikund has a daily cutoff (varies by authorities). NIT recommends starting before 7 AM.
- No single-use plastic on the entire Yatra route. Carry a reusable bottle.
- Biometric registration: required at Phata, Sonprayag, or Gaurikund checkpoints — allow 10–15 minutes.

Legend of Kedarnath Temple
After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's forgiveness for the bloodshed. Shiva, unwilling to grant them absolution easily, took the form of a bull and fled to the Himalayas. At Kedarnath, Bhima recognized the bull and grabbed it — but the bull disappeared into the ground, leaving only his hump above the surface.
The hump became the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga. Other parts of the bull are said to have emerged at four other locations — together forming the Panch Kedar. The temple, originally built by the Pandavas and restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, has stood at 3,583 m for over 1,200 years.
