Gangotri Opening Dates

• Gangotri Temple Opening Date 2026: 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya)
• Gangotri Temple Closing Date 2026: 10 November 2026 (Tentative - announced closer to Diwali)
• Winter home: During winter, the deity of Goddess Ganga is moved to Mukhba village (near Harsil). Pilgrims can visit Mukhba for Darshan during the off-season.

Gangotri History

The Gangotri temple was built in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gurkha military commander. The original temple structure was later developed by the Gorkha general Shivram Singh. The white granite temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.

Gangotri is the second Dham in the traditional Chhota Chardham Yatra sequence (Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath). Pilgrims bring Gangajal from here to offer at Kedarnath, which is the next stop on the Chardham circuit.

The temple faces the Bhagirathi River. A few metres below the temple, the Bhagirath Shila - a sacred rock where King Bhagirath is believed to have performed penance - can be seen. The submerged Shivalinga (Gange Ki Dhar) in the river is visible and deeply venerated.

Best Time to Visit

• May-June (Peak Season): Pleasant weather, 5-15°C daytime. Roads are clear. Peak pilgrim rush - book accommodation in advance.
• July-August (Monsoon): Avoid if possible. Landslides, road blockages, and flood risk are common on the Uttarkashi-Gangotri road.
• September-October (Off-Peak): Fewer crowds, clear views of peaks. Temperature drops to 0-8°C. One of the best windows for Gangotri.
• Temperature at Gangotri: May 5-15°C | June 8-18°C | Sep 3-12°C | Oct -2-8°C. Nights are cold throughout the season. Carry thermals and jacket regardless of the month.

Places to Visit

• Harsil Valley: A scenic village 25 km before Gangotri, famous for apple orchards, deodar forests, and the Bhagirathi River. Many pilgrims base themselves here. Also home to Wilson's Bungalow, a heritage property.
• Bhairon Ghati: A deep gorge where the Jalandhari River meets the Bhagirathi. Located 10 km from Gangotri on the approach road.
• Pandava Cave: Near the Gangotri temple - believed to be the spot where the Pandavas stopped on their Swargarohini journey.
• Gaumukh Glacier (18 km trek): The source of the Bhagirathi River. Requires a Forest Department permit and 2 additional days. Recommended only for physically fit and experienced trekkers. Not part of the standard 5-day package.
• Submerged Shivalinga: Visible in the Bhagirathi River just below the Gangotri temple. In low water months (post-monsoon), it is clearly visible. A sacred sight for pilgrims.

How to Reach

• By Air: Fly from Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (~1 hr). From Dehradun, hire a taxi to Haridwar/Rishikesh (~1.5 hrs), then continue to Uttarkashi and Gangotri by road.
• By Train: Delhi to Haridwar by train (~5-6 hrs). Haridwar is the most convenient railhead for the Gangotri route. From Haridwar, hire a private cab or shared taxi to Uttarkashi (170 km, 6-7 hrs), then to Gangotri (100 km, 3 hrs).
• By Road: Delhi to Gangotri via NH-58/NH-7 is approximately 500 km - a 2-day drive. Day 1: Delhi to Haridwar (210 km). Day 2: Haridwar to Uttarkashi (170 km). Day 3: Uttarkashi to Gangotri (100 km).

Note: There is no helicopter service to Gangotri. The temple is accessible only by road.

• Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes with grip (no trekking required for Gangotri)

• Essentials: Power bank, torch, cash (few ATMs in Uttarkashi; none at Gangotri)
