Chardham Yatra Tour Itinerary from Dehradun

Day 1: Dehradun to Barkot (Yamunotri Base)

Your Chardham Yatra starts in Dehradun. After pickup, you drive to Barkot, the base town for Yamunotri temple.

  • Pickup from Dehradun railway station or Jolly Grant Airport
  • Drive in a private car to Barkot via Mussoorie
  • Scenic drive through the Himalayan foothills
  • Evening rest and preparation for the next day’s trek

Distance: ~130 km

Approx Time: 4-6 hrs, depending on traffic at Mussoorie

Barkot is a quiet town on the Yamuna, and a night here helps you adjust before the Yamunotri trek.

Day 2: Barkot to Yamunotri Darshan and back to Barkot

Today is Yamunotri Temple darshan, the first of the four dhams. Yamunotri (3,293 m) is near the source of the Yamuna river and is the seat of Goddess Yamuna.

  • Early breakfast and drive to Janki Chatti (about 45-50 km), the last motorable point
  • Trek 6 km to Yamunotri Temple, or hire a pony or palki
  • Worship at Divya Shila, take darshan, and take an optional holy dip in the hot water kund near the temple
  • Trek back to Janki Chatti and drive to Barkot by evening

Note: Carry warm clothes and wear comfortable shoes, as it is cold at the temple.

Pilgrim Tip: Devotees tie rice or potatoes in a cloth and cook them in Surya Kund, the hot spring beside the temple, then take it home as prasad. A step-by-step guide is in our Yamunotri trek guide.

Day 3: Barkot to Uttarkashi, Gangotri Darshan and back to Uttarkashi

Today’s focus is Gangotri (about 3,100 m), where the Ganga is worshipped close to its source at Gaumukh. According to legend, King Bhagirath’s penance brought the Ganga down to earth here.

  • Early start from Barkot and drive via Uttarkashi to Gangotri, through pine forests and river gorges
  • Darshan and worship at Gangotri Temple
  • Time on the banks of the Bhagirathi river
  • Drive back to Uttarkashi for the night

Accommodation: Hotel in Uttarkashi

Distance: ~280 km (Barkot to Gangotri ~180 km, then ~100 km back to Uttarkashi)

Approx Time: 10-12 hrs

Tip: This is the longest day of the yatra, so start by 5 am. if you offer the split version (Barkot to Uttarkashi, then Gangotri as an 11-day plan), mention it here.]

Day 4: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi / Sonprayag

After breakfast in Uttarkashi, you begin the long drive to Guptkashi or Sonprayag, the base for Kedarnath.

  • Depart from Uttarkashi after breakfast
  • Drive through river valleys and mountain roads via Tehri
  • Stops for meals and photos on the way
  • Reach Guptkashi / Sonprayag by evening

Accommodation: Hotel in Guptkashi / Sonprayag

Distance: ~200 km to Guptkashi (Sonprayag is ~30 km further)

Approx Time: 8-9 hrs

It is a long travel day on winding mountain roads, so carry water and snacks.

Day 5: Sonprayag to Kedarnath Darshan and back to Sonprayag

Today is Kedarnath darshan, the temple of Lord Shiva at about 3,580 m.

  • Early morning shuttle from Sonprayag to Gaurikund (~5 km). Private vehicles stop at Sonprayag
  • Trek, pony or doli from Gaurikund to Kedarnath (~16 km one way)
  • Darshan and pooja at Kedarnath Temple
  • Trek back to Gaurikund and return to Sonprayag / Guptkashi

Accommodation: Hotel in Sonprayag / Guptkashi

Important: The trek is 16 km each way. Uttarakhand Tourism puts the climb at 6-8 hours on foot, and then you walk back down the same day. That is a lot for most people, so decide before the trip:

  • Book a Kedarnath helicopter from Guptkashi, Phata or Sersi (see the helicopter section below), or
  • Hire a pony, palki or doli for one or both ways

Day 6: Sonprayag to Rudraprayag to Joshimath

After Kedarnath darshan, you head to Joshimath (officially renamed Jyotirmath), the gateway to Badrinath.

  • Depart after breakfast for Joshimath
  • Drive through Rudraprayag, where the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers meet
  • Stops at scenic points and a riverside lunch on the way
  • Reach Joshimath by evening

Distance: ~185 km

Travel Time: 6-8 hrs

This comes right after the Kedarnath day, so treat it as a rest-in-the-car day. Keep the evening free.

Joshimath is a holy town and home to Jyotirmath, one of the four maths founded by Adi Shankaracharya, which gives the town its new official name.

Day 7: Joshimath to Badrinath Darshan and back to Joshimath

Today you visit Badrinath Temple (about 3,133 m), dedicated to Lord Vishnu, on the banks of the Alaknanda river.

  • Early morning drive to Badrinath (about 45 km, around 2 hours)
  • Holy dip in Tapt Kund, the hot spring below the temple
  • Darshan and pooja at Badrinath Temple
  • Views of Neelkanth peak and an optional visit to Mana village, about 3 km from Badrinath
  • Return to Joshimath for the night

Accommodation: Hotel in Joshimath

Pilgrim Tip: The evening aarti at Badrinath is only possible if you stay the night there. If you can switch this night to a Badrinath hotel on request, say so here.]

Day 8: Joshimath to Auli Sightseeing and back to Joshimath

A day off from temple travel. Auli is about 14-16 km from Joshimath by road, a ski slope in winter and open meadows in summer, with views of the Garhwal peaks.

  • After breakfast, drive to Auli by road. The Joshimath-Auli ropeway shut in January 2023 after the Joshimath land subsidence and was still closed in June 2026
  • Walk to Gorson Bugyal (also spelt Gurso or Gurson Bugyal), a high meadow above Auli
  • Enjoy views of the snow peaks, including Nanda Devi on a clear day
  • Return to Joshimath in the evening

Accommodation: Hotel in Joshimath

Keep this day flexible. If a landslide costs you time earlier in the trip, this is the day that absorbs it.

Day 9: Joshimath to Haridwar

Today you head back down to the plains, to Haridwar on the banks of the Ganga.

  • Leave Joshimath after breakfast
  • Drive down along the river via Rudraprayag, Devprayag and Rishikesh
  • Reach Haridwar by evening
  • Attend the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri if you arrive in time

Accommodation: Hotel in Haridwar

Distance: ~275 km

Approx Time: 9-10 hrs

If you have time, you can walk through the markets near Har Ki Pauri.

Day 10: Haridwar to Dehradun Drop & Departure

Your Chardham Yatra ends with a short drive back to Dehradun, where you are dropped at the railway station or the airport.

  • Breakfast at the hotel in Haridwar
  • Private transfer to Dehradun
  • Assistance for your onward journey

Distance: ~55 km to Dehradun city; the airport drop is usually shorter

Time: 1-2 hrs
