Best Time for Do Dham Yatra

September to mid-October and May-June are considered to be the best times to visit Yamunotri and Gangotri, as the roads are easy to travel and the weather is pleasant. In the summer months, the average temperature ranges between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius, which is ideal for visiting the temples and sightseeing.

Monsoon (July-August) is not a good time to visit Do Dham due to the chances of heavy rainfalls that may result in slippery roads and landslides. This makes traveling a bit dangerous. The autumn season is a good time to visit Gangotri and Yamunotri due to clear, and a calm pilgrimage experience.

During winters (November to April), both the shrines are closed due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions.

The distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri is around 228 km. It includes a 6 km trek to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti. The distance from Gangotri to Janki Chatti by road is around 222 kilometers. It will take around 6-8 hours to complete this journey.

Trekking Guide

You do not need to trek to reach Gangotri as the temple is easily accessible by road. From Janki Chatti, you will have to undertake a 6 km trek to Yamunotri. The trek is of moderate difficulty and steep. If you do not want to trek, you can opt for Pitthu (human porter who carries you on a backpack chair), Palkis, and ponies.

You're advised to commence the trekking journey early in the morning so that you can return before dusk.

Both Yamunotri (3,293m) and Gangotri (3,100m) are at high altitude. Pilgrims coming from plains cities may experience altitude sickness - headache, nausea, dizziness, or breathlessness.

Prevent it: drink 3-4 litres of water daily, walk slowly, rest on your first day at each base town. If symptoms don't improve within 30 minutes of rest, descend immediately.

Medical aid posts are available at Janki Chatti, along the Yamunotri trek route, and at Gangotri. Senior pilgrims and those with heart/BP/diabetes must carry a doctor's fitness certificate.

Pilgrims traditionally cook rice and potatoes wrapped in cloth in this spring as prasad - DO NOT bathe in Surya Kund. For a holy dip, use the nearby Jamunabai Kund.

Kharsali

How to Reach

By Flight

Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) is the nearest airport to the Do Dham sites. It has good connectivity with major Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. From Jolly Grant Airport, take a taxi or bus to Haridwar or Rishikesh (about 1-1.5 hrs) and begin your Yatra from there.

By Train

Haridwar and Rishikesh are the nearest railway stations to Gangotri and Yamunotri. From Rishikesh or Haridwar, you can book a taxi or bus to Gangotri or Janki Chatti, from where the trek to Yamunotri starts.

By Bus

For Yamunotri: buses from Rishikesh/Haridwar go to Barkot. From Barkot, local shared taxis run to Janki Chatti (45 km), which is the trek base for Yamunotri.

By Helicopter

Helicopter service to Yamunotri and Gangotri starts from the Sahastradhara helipad at Dehradun.
